Notable Non-Tournament Matchups
(5A) #8 Rio Rancho at (5A) #10 Piedra Vista
Rio Rancho (8-3) makes another trip to the northwest corner to place the other Farmington team at Piedra Vista (11-2). Piedra Vista has a great opportunity not only to get to play the game at home but to grab a win against a team that they missed a date with back in Rio Rancho's own tournament. Piedra Vista touts an aggressive defense, so it may be up to Kelsie Hawkins, Julia Chavez, and Hannah Dietz to pick up where Laura Guiterrez may not be able to dominant from on the floor. Elaina Watson and Lanae Billy will help lead the PV offense while Reagan Schmidt and Tiontai Woods add additional options for Piedra Vista.
(5A) #9 Centennial at (5A) #4 Carlsbad
Carlsbad (9-2) dispatched a fairly solid Mayfield (9-5) team that struggled on the road. Now they'll host another Las Cruces team in Centennial (7-6). The up and down Lady Hawks couldn't hold off top ranked Hobbs, but might fair better on the road at Carlsbad. It'll be up to Dianne Hefner and Jessica Rios to try to slow down Carsyn Boswell and Kaliyah Montoya.
(4A) #9 Espanola Valley at (4A) #2 Los Lunas
Espanola Valley (6-5) makes their way south to face the number two team in 4A, Los Lunas (8-3). Espanola Valley seems to have got it together although they did miss out on some games that were cancelled at St. Michael's tournament. Los Lunas is fresh off winning their own tournament after defeating Gallup in the title game. Now, they'll have to conted with a wildcard Espanola team that could be trouble from beyond the arc. If there's a chance for EV to steal a win due to a winter break slump on Los Lunas, this might be the game to do it.
(4A) #10 Goddard at Clovis
This is a very winnable game for Goddard (8-4) as they'll make their way to Clovis (4-9) for an early evening battle. Goddard has won 6 of their last 7 games and a win here at Clovis would help solidify them as clear favorites in this district. Clovis on the other hand has lost 4 of their last 5 and a win here against a good Goddard team would put them back on track.
(3A) #8 West Las Vegas at (3A) #6 Tularosa
A nice top ten showdown as West Las Vegas (6-3) makes their way to Tularosa (6-4) to stir up the race for a top five spot in 3A. West Las Vegas, with only eight players listed on their Maxpreps varsity roster will look to contend with an experienced Tularosa team led by Ember Cervantes and Shacie Marr. West will look to Skylin Morgan and Briana Marquez to lead the way.
(3A) #4 Tucumcari at (1A) #1 Logan
Tucumcari (7-3) and Logan (10-1) are fresh off routs of opponents by near 50-point margins. This should prove to be a quality inter-class showdown as both teams boasts some top talent like Tucumcari's Ashley Shipley and Kalani French and Logan's Karlie Webb, Jordan Hines, and Harlie Roach. This one should be one to see.
