District 5-5A Preseason Rankings

Predicted Order of Finish
1. Sandia
2. Manzano
3. Santa Fe
4. Albuquerque
5. Capital
6. Rio Grande

Scoop: Sandia is the early front runner in the new 5-5A district this season led by the return of Sapirah Broussard. Broussard one of the top players in the district was out last season with an injury. Also, look for Marisa Garcia to build off a great freshman season.

Mya Williams (2020) returns for the Monarchs this season in what could shape up to be a very exciting season for Manzano. The Monarchs return depth and a majority of the experience from a season back. Right behind Manzano will be Taylor Salazar and the Santa Fe Demons. Look for Santa Fe to challenge for the top slot in the district this season.

Albuquerque and Capital will battle this season as both return a core of their roster from last season. Still young and maybe a season away but this could be a team to keep an eye on for the future. Rio Grande will sit in the cellar this season and after a 0-25 season things are not looking bright this season in jam packed 5A class.

Playoff Bids: 3.

Predicted Order of Finish
1. Silver
2. Santa Teresa
3. Chaparral
4. Ruidoso

Scoop: The Silver Colts are the early frontrunner and like in 1-4A and 2-4A the narrative stays the same for the opening line - the top team and then the rest. The Colts bring back one of the top players in the classification in Triston Moore along with Jonathan Harris to create a serious duo. This could be a Final Four type of team if the chips fall into place.

Santa Teresa and Chaparral fall in like next. Santa Teresa brings back Nathan Castorena (2020) and Joshua Melendez (2019) that could battle for the DC or an at-large bid. Nathan Ochoa returns for the Lobos after starting last season but after a 4-win season this could be a team fighting to get to 10-wins for a best case scenario.

The Warriors will feel the affects of moving up in classification but will ride the fact that they return Josh Romero. Maybe, a battle for third place between them and Chaparral is the storyline for the Warriors going into the season.

Possible Playoff Bids: 1 with the possibility of 2 max

Opinion: Private Schools in NM

Is it fair to use regular enrollment rules for Private schools?

In my opinion private schools carry a significant edge. Maybe not as big as in other states due to NM’s open enrollment- but nonetheless...
Private schools in NM are in the largest cities (Abq, SF), and usually have a better learning environment (less kids, more teachers, etc)- and obviously don’t have the discipline problems of public schools. With scholarships and a little recruiting- These advantages could easily lure the top athletes from these larger cities into a 3A or 4A sports environment. Often pitting these schools against rural NM towns that only use kids within their small communities to fill their athletic teams!

Just some examples so far since the 2018 school year started...

Girls soccer:
4A- Academy beat Hope in the finals. Pius lost in the semifinals. Los Alamos was the other semi finalist. City population 12,000.
3A- Sandia prep beat St. Mikes for the title.
Boys soccer:
4A- Academy wins the title, but St. Pius was the #1 seed entering.
3A- Sandia Prep state champs.
Girls Volleyball:
4A- no private school champ here, but Hope, Pius and Academy all made it to at least the quarterfinals.
3A- St. Mike beat Sandia Prep
Football:
4A- Pius #1 seed
3A- Hope #1 seed
