Week 6: Quick Reactions from Tuesday

This feature will recap the games from the previous night in New Mexico High School basketball.

Week 6: New Mexico High School basketball scores

Best Win
Bernalillo 62, Grants 60: Bernalillo is ranked high in just about every poll in 4A basketball. They had a test on Tuesday night against rival Grants at home. The win helps the resume and likely the best win for a team that still needed to make believers.

Best Resume Win
St. Pius X 77, Gallup 55: The Sartans hosted Gallup on Tuesday night and improve to (6-1) after a convincing 22-point win. Gallup should be in play for the DC in 1-5A and St. Pius X will have to battle in a DC where they could finish (1-3). This resume helps them and the District.

Upset of the Night
Portales 76, Goddard 72 (OT): The Portales Rams extend their win streak to 3 games after a 0-2 start to the season. This win is a signature win and helps their resume. Goddard drops to 4-5 on the season but doesn't have a bad loss on the resume and if Portales runs the table (like they could) this still won't hurt.

Quality Control
Silver 56, Alamogordo 39; Espanola Valley 64, Santa Fe 55; Hobbs 81, Lovington 70: The favorites won in each contest. Silver could be looking more and more like a favorite in 4A. Also, for the first time 4A could be intriguing in the playoffs.

Best Small School Win (3A-1A)
Tatum 53, Eunice 49: Solid win for the Coyotes over the Cardinals as they move to 4-2 on the season and earn a quality win for the 2A program that will have its hands full with the likes of Jal, Hagerman and Gateway Christian.

District Power
3-4A: Silver rolled, Socorro (over LA) won and Hot Springs (over Santa Teresa) notched a solid win. Hatch Valley lost big but overall not a bad night for the District. Could become an interesting race down the end for second/third with the Colts (Silver) leading the way.

What to Watch on Thursday

Aztec vs Shiprock: A game in Northwest New Mexico worth the watch. Aztec at (3-2) is a team that we are still wondering if they are 5A top ten worthy. Shiprock, is Shiprock.

Socorro at Magdalena: Close rivals both have 1-loss on the season MHS (6-1) and Socorro (9-1). Neither should be hurt with a loss but could gain from a win.

Santa Fe (3-6) at Espanola Valley (4-4): We all know the reason this will be one to watch.

St. Pius X (5-2) at Los Alamos (4-7): Is Los Alamos a top ten team? St. Pius X a favorite for the 5A title or close to it?

Bloomfield (6-1) at Piedra Vista (5-1): Is Bloomfield the real deal? We have them ranked 2 in 5A and this win is one that they can have bragging rights in NWNM. Is PV a top ten team in 6A? They should be but this win could help power ranking and resume.
