Coach Salata on realignment

I couldn't agree with him more about them not asking coaches for input regarding the selection process. Coaches need to continue to speak out about the change from 16 to 12 teams. Here is what was said by him in the RR Observer:

Three of the city’s basketball coaches were ambivalent, although RRHS boys coach Wally Salata had some ideas.

"For basketball, losing Piedra Vista and gaining Atrisco Heritage will make our district the toughest in the state. Every team in our district can beat one another on any given night; there are no cupcake games. The positive with this move means we don’t have to travel out of town," he said. "There are now 27 teams in 5A and only 12 make the state tournament — this rule needs to be changed back to 16 teams. This means 15 teams don’t make the state tournament. A district champion might only play one game in a three-week span. I don’t think any coach will like this scenario.

"Why doesn’t the NMAA ask coaches for input in re-alignment?" Salata wondered "They ask coaches for our input when selecting teams for the state tournament. If I was asked how to re-align 5A, this would be my plan: I would make two divisions, North and South, and split both divisions into two conferences. Here is what the divisions and conferences would look like."

In the North, Salata built Conference A with Atrisco Heritage, Rio Grande, West Mesa, Albuquerque High, Volcano Vista, Cibola, Rio Rancho and Cleveland. Conference B would be made up of Farmington, Piedra Vista, Santa Fe, Capital, La Cueva, Eldorado, Sandia and Manzano.

The South’s Conference A would have Hobbs, Clovis, Carlsbad, Roswell and Alamogordo. Conference B would have Las Cruces, Oñate, Centennial, Mayfield, Gadsden and Deming.

According to Salata, North Conference A would play each team twice (14 games) and play North Conference B once (8 games); that’s 22 games. Then allow each North Conference A team to play in one holiday tournament (three games) for a total of 25 games.

"I would eliminate the APS Tournament so teams can play someone from the South," he noted.

North Conference B would play each team twice (14 games) and play North Conference A once (eight games); that’s 22 games. Then allow each North Conference B team to play in one holiday tournament (three games) for a total of 25 games.

South Conference A would play each team twice (eight games) and play South Conference B once (six games); that’s 14 games.

South Conference B would play each team twice (10 games) and play South Conference B once (5 games). That’s 15 games.

The South Conferences "would schedule the remaining games out of conference and play in one or two tournaments."

Salata, who’s been a varsity coach for more than 20 years, thinks his idea is a practical one that should be considered by the NMAA.

"It took me 15 minutes to put together 5A basketball," he said. "These are called power conferences; these would be very competitive conferences. This is the type of re-alignment we should be looking at. How fun would this be?"

NMAA Compete With Class

BLOOMFIELD, FARMINGTON, PIEDRA VISTA, NAVAJO PREP, SHIPROCK, KIRTLAND, & NORTHWEST SELECTED AS COMPETE WITH CLASS HONOREES

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – The New Mexico Activities Association is proud to announce that seven schools from the Northwest corner of the state have been recognized as the Compete with Class award recipients for the month of December 2017.

In an email to the NMAA from Aztec Athletic Director Bryan Sanders following the tragic events that occurred on the Aztec High School campus in early December, he explained how these seven rival high schools rallied in support of a community in need.

Sanders commented by saying, “On December 7, 2017, Aztec High School experienced an unthinkable tragedy. The outpouring of love and support that our school and community have received has been tremendous! We have received messages of support from schools across the state and the encouragement has been very heartwarming and uplifting. The number of schools and teams that have offered support are too numerous to name and I know that I would miss some if I tried. I would, however, like to specifically recognize the students, coaches, and communities in San Juan County. Never in a million years did I think that I would see the Bloomfield ‘B’, the Farmington ‘F’ and Piedra Vista’s ‘PV’ painted orange. We have had many of the teams in the area wearing orange socks, orange stripes on their uniforms, black and orange headbands - and the list goes on-and-on. Student sections decked out in Tiger colors and holding signs of support. We at Aztec High School appreciate the overwhelming support we have received from Bloomfield, Farmington, Piedra Vista, Kirtland Central, Navajo Prep, Northwest, and Shiprock. These are teams that we have had heated rivalries with but all that was put aside as our kids and community were hurting and they have stepped up and supported us in an extremely classy way. From the bottom of my heart, I want to express the gratitude of myself, Aztec High School and the community of Aztec! #aztecstrong”

Sportsmanship is defined by the NMAA as the act of treating others in a respectful manner, taking personal accountability for one's actions, and responding with integrity while engaged in competition.

The NMAA would like to thank and recognize these seven schools from the Northwest Area of New Mexico for setting a great example for the state of New Mexico.

Their act of sportsmanship exemplifies the true ideals of the Compete with Class Sportsmanship Initiative - respect, integrity, and responsibility. More information regarding the “Compete with Class” sportsmanship initiative can be found on the NMAA website at www.nmact.org.

Note that the NMAA will announce a monthly honoree throughout the remainder of the 2017-2018 school year. Questions regarding this announcement can be directed to Dusty Young, NMAA Associate Director, at (505) 977-5385.
