Leadership

NMPreps community,

If this is something that can't be done I will revise this post with just my email so that I can directly email those who want to join. I would like to open the discussions on here if possible.

The Lovington Baseball Program is doing a leadership book study again this year. We are reading the Mentor Leader by Tony Dungy. We would like to continue to grow our impact this year and ask you all to participate in the study with us. Below is our review for Chapter 1 the boys read the book and we share our thoughts and try to see what we can add to our program. Our first discussion is tomorrow and I would like to share your responses with our players. Thank you.

The Mentor Leader Book Review

Chapter 1: The Mandate of a Mentor Leader- Focus on Significance

1. Are your actions consistent with your words?

-INTEGRITY at all costs.

My first year here we were playing Valencia High School with 2 runners on base and losing by 1 run. Michael Alexander hit a line drive off the left field fence to tie the game. However, the ball was clearly a foot foul. I had inadvertently blocked the home plate umpire’s view of the ball while coaching 3rd base and he had ruled it a fair ball because he couldn’t see it. Valencia’s coach was furious! After all the commotion I went to the umpire and told him the ball was actually foul and we agreed to correct the play. We ended up losing the game, but I still stuck to my mantra Integrity At All Costs.

2. How are you helping to train a leader to take your place when you leave?

-I hope that we would continue to grow our district/ community. I feel that my strength is leadership and understanding how to help grow others in this area.

3. Are people central to our mission or just a way to accomplish our goals?

-This one stood out to me the most. People have to be central to your mission and the focus of what drives you as a leader. If you believe people are replaceable then you will spend a lot of time doing just that, replacing people.

4. What legacy are you leaving behind?

-That what we taught was later taught to our students’ & players’ children/grandchildren etc. That the waves of influence would always continue to grow and create future leaders. BETTER PEOPLE MAKE BETTER WILDCATS

Important Takeaways

-Mentor Leaders Put People First

-Relationships with others are ultimately what will last. Your impact on others will last longer than your accomplishments

-Just because you’re in charge, doesn’t make you a leader

-Boys & girls in a fatherless home are 5 times more likely to end up in poverty, engage in criminal behavior, drug use, and teen pregnancy.

Quotes

“Unity of purpose and a desire to make other people better must start at the top if these goals are going to ripple through an entire organization.”

“If we lose sight of people, we lose sight of the very purpose of leadership.”

“Mentor Leadership focuses on building people up, building significance into their lives, and building leaders for the next generation.”

Immediate eligibility for transfers?

The NCAA is thinking about changing the rules governing transfers after a student athlete signs a national letter of intent. Currently if an athlete wants to transfer from one NCAA D1 or D2 school to another they must sit out a year or obtain a release from their current school.

On the NCAA released a statement on their website: “An academic transfer standard for all students that would tie one-time immediate eligibility for competition after transfer to a set of academic benchmarks instead of to in what sport the student-athlete competes."

So do you think a transfer should have to sit out a year or not??

Most Likely to Upset in Week 3

Where's the defense?

Just going to throw this out there. We have a serious lack of defense in this state right now. La Cueva and Rio Rancho are the only two defenses out there right now that can dominate a game. Most other teams win with offense. Even Las Cruces, a bona fide title contender, has had trouble stopping people and mark my words it will catch up to them eventually. What is the problem? Admittedly we do have some pretty good offenses in the state, but to me a team's whole identity, including it's toughness and attitude, comes from a tough, aggressive, shut down defense. Defense gives you swagger. Defense allows the offense to play smart and under control. Defense wins championships. If I am building a team it all starts with defense.... That's my rant for the day.
