Week 9 - 6A Bracket Watch

WEEK 9 BRACKET WATCH - CLASS 6A

Very early for some bracket watch, but bear with me on this bracket look at 6A girls hoops. District play has started for only one district so much of what you see below can and will likely change.

1. Carlsbad/Hobbs (DC)
2. West Mesa (DC)
3. Carlsbad/Hobbs (DRU)
4. Mayfield (D-3RD)

I'm going to be perfectly honest and say West Mesa holding on to that 2-seed is slim. It's possible, but it'll take some help from the Maxpreps rankings and coaches' input to give them that final push past a Hobbs or Carlsbad for that #2 spot.

#5 Las Cruces (D-4TH)
#6 La Cueva (DC)
#7 Eldorado (DRU)
#8 Cibola (DC)

Believe me, I don't like the bunching up of district teams either. For now, with the non-district matchup playing in favor of La Cueva, the Lady Bears get the benefit of the district champion matchup. Cibola doesn't quite have that title contender aura yet but after defeating Volcano Vista in the metro tourney, I'll give them the DC benefit for now.

#9 Sandia (D-3RD)
#10 Volcano Vista (DRU)
#11 Centennial (D-5TH)
#12 Rio Rancho (D-3RD)

Rio Rancho losing to Centennial in the Mel Otero tournament comes back to haunt them as the Lady Hawks jump ahead of them for that 11th spot. Volcano Vista keeps that win against Bloomfield (DC) in their pocket.

#13 Piedra Vista (D-4TH)
#14 Highland (DRU)
#15 Clovis (D-4TH)
#16 Onate (D-6TH)

Plenty of movement possible here at the bubble zone. Piedra Vista might prove themselves ready for 6A and move up to 3rd in district play. Highland's win against Onate and district runner-up keeps them ahead of the Lady Knights. Clovis has had good and bad games and needs to at least stay ahead of Santa Fe to keep their tournament bid alive.

Outside-Looking-In

17. Cleveland (D-5TH) - That 8-game losing skid didn't do them any favors in the overall record criteria. The win against Academy may come in handy if they can finish 4th or better in district play.

18. Santa Fe (D-5TH) - They've lost 4 of their last 6 but a win against St. Pius X may be helpful if the Sartans can win their district. To date though, they have no wins against 6A competition. They'll need to finish better than Clovis to sneak in.

It's early, but what does your bracket look like? Post and comment below.

National Rankings

During football season, someone posted that Rio Rancho was ranked in the top 100 nationally according to MaxPreps, so I thought I'd post this.

The Carlsbad girls (54th) and Hobbs girls (70th) are both in the MaxPreps top 100.

I would have posted this on the girls board, but I know not as many people look at that board and these girls deserve the recognition.

Week 9 Daily Dimes: Tuesday Night Hoops

Week 9 Daily Dimes: Tuesday Night Hoops

We take a look at the games for Tuesday night in New Mexico High School basketball. What are the must-see games around the state?

Best Game: No 3 Las Cruces (13-1) vs No. 13 Hobbs (9-4). The Bulldawgs are one of the hottest teams in the state, Hobbs the so-called dark horse. I like RJ Brown (LC) vs Clay Strasner (Hobbs).

Under-the-Radar Game: No. 1 Onate (13-2, 2-0) vs Carlsbad (9-6). Onate is the talk right now and they have back it up. Can you ever count a Carlsbad team out with a product like Brenden Boatwright?

Seed Position: No. 16 Cleveland (11-5) at No. 7 Eldorado (7-4). Eldorado is projected to win their District (2-6A) so this win could help the Storm with their criteria.

This One Look Interesting: No. 2 Los Lunas (12-1) vs Alamogordo (8-7). On paper, not so much but Alamogordo is one of the best teams not ranked in the Top-25.

Keep an Eye: Top-25 Schedule

New study out on Degenerative Brain Diseases

" Mayo Clinic Proceedings found that varsity football players from 1956 to 1970 did not have an increased risk of degenerative brain diseases, compared with athletes in other varsity sports" - "This study mirrors a previous Mayo Clinic study of high school athletes who played between 1946 and 1956. That study also found no increased risk of degenerative brain diseases."
