Alamogordo Tigers raise money for cancer research

The Alamogordo Tigers are teaming up with Kick-it.org to cure childhood cancer one point at a time.

The Alamogordo High School Varsity Football Team dedicated their football season to Alamogordo's own Kylie Beach and Jarod Johnson, and other children with cancer. Through the Kick-it For Cancer program, they are committed to raising awareness and funds for children's cancer research.

They teamed up with supporters on every touchdown, field goal, extra point, and safety they made this season. People pledged per point and lump sum donations to help raise money and awareness for children's cancer research.

So far this season, they have scored 403 points and have raised $954! Hopefully, Friday's playoff game vs Del Norte will put them over the $1,000 mark!

They presented certificates this morning to Kylie Beach and Jarod Johnson as a way of saying thank you for inspiring the team this season. The team is very proud of these two courageous young people and wanted them to know the Tigers are fighting with them.

The ceremony was held at Kylie's elementary school during breakfast this morning.

5A State Playoff Preview

The New Mexico Athletic Association met and released the bracket for the 2016 state playoffs in New Mexico. 12-teams in each classification from 6A (largest enrollment) to 3A (enrollment) found their fate on Saturday night at 10:30 p.m.

Today, we take a look at each bracket, the match-ups and the must see prospects in each classification.

First Round Schedule

5. Los Lunas vs 12. Kirtland Central, Friday, 7pm
6. Goddard vs 11. Miyamura, Friday, 7pm
7. Aztec vs 10. Farmington, Friday, 7pm
8. Alamogordo vs 9. Del Norte, Friday, 7pm

5A Overview

The bracket with all the uncertainty, mystery, anger and questions came from the final two weeks of the season. Who would be 1? How do the other jenga pieces fit the building of the 5A bracket? Well, District 4-5A sorted it self out and the rest of the pieces fell in order right were they should.

The top seed in the tournament is the Artesia Bulldogs with an (8-2) record and one of the toughest roads to the state tournament. They have a stud quarterback in junior Taylor Null leading the charge. Next, we have the 2-seed St. Pius X Sartans who was a near 1-seed that enters with a 9-1 record and a quarterback of their own looking to prove naysayers wrong.

The mix bag of quality teams, with the chance to take home the blue trophy has the 3-seed Roswell Coyotes (8-2), the team that has everyone talking coach of the year. 4-seed is another team not picked but earned respect in the Belen Eagles (8-2).

Rounding out true contenders are the 5-seed Los Lunas Tigers (7-3), who seem to have weathered any sign of a storm along with the 6-seed Goddard Rockets (6-4) who had the win of the season to this point when they upset Artesia.

Five Players to Watch

Drew Ortiz (St. Pius X): Unfortunately, the Sartans don't release stats. However, we have seen the young man have multiple games with 5-touchdowns. He can beat you in the air or making impressive moves with his feet on the ground. Ortiz, is a must see prospect and could have the Sartans looking to shake any doubts on this program.

Taylor Null (Artesia): A few weeks before the season ended in October, Null had 22-touchdowns and 678-passing yards.Null, without question is 2 or 1B behind Ortiz this season in 5A Quarterback rankings and number 30 (state titles) could very much be on its way to Bulldog City.

Kyle Hooper (Alamogordo): Yes, I know I try to make sure to list different positions in our Five to Watch but you can't ignore the classification has three outstanding quarterbacks. Hooper, being courted by next level programs, has 2125 passing yards with 24-touchdowns. He might have the best distance on his ball of the top three and could have a second round showdown with Taylor Null that will surely be on the radar for anyone around the SE region.

Gabriel Najar (Roswell): The name that is in our untitled newcomer of the group is Najar who has flown up the running back charts. The Coyotes are ranked third in the bracket and with his 777-yards, 9-touchdowns he is playing a big part of the season that they are having this season.

Trevor Brohard (Los Lunas): The prospect we have heard about who has a D-1 offer is Trevor Brohard. The LB/TE leads the classification in tackles at 116, 88 solo and 1 sack on the season. The classification will have plenty on our list of 100-players to watch in the post season and Brohard could be the top defensive player.

Dark Horse

Aztec
: The Tigers might have a tough time overcoming the high powered offense in the quarterfinals with a potential match up with St. Pius X. However, the Tigers offense wouldn't surprise me if they made it a close 60-59 battle to the end. Defense will be the question in that game but we will wait to break it down. Right now we could still bet on the Tigers for being a dark horse. The other team I like, nearly went with, was the Del Norte Knights who like the Tigers have played well to end the regular season.

Upset Alert

Miyamura:
Okay, before you call me everything in the book let me say my reason. Yes, I am also aware that District 1-5A does not play well against SE NM district. The Patriots holding teams to 22.3 points per game is not terrible. They have a quarterback in Matt Chavez who has played well in big games with a 243-passing yard night against 2-seed St. Pius X in late September. Lastly, for fun sake Goddard is 0-1 against the northwest area this season.

5-12 Seed That Could Make Semi-Finals

Los Lunas: Disclaimer again before you hit reply, I'll give my feature some justice and give my unbiased, don't have a favorite and not from Los Lunas (but feel home at Valencia *insert wink face emoji) opinion. Los Lunas didn't have studs, was not healthy in the first meeting with Belen. The game will be a classic in the second round but I could see the Los Lunas Tigers reaching the semi-finals.

First Round Predictions

Alamogordo over Del Norte
Los Lunas over Kirtland Central
Goddard over Miyamura
Aztec over Farmington

In This Thread: We Honor Veterans

In my opinion, there is no bigger day than Veterans Day (after Memorial Day). A time to honor those that have served in the United States Armed Forces, what I feel is the biggest honor one can do for this country. To all the men and women that are currently serving, have served, or paid the ultimate price, we Salute You. Not only on Veterans and Memorial Day but every day. It's because of your selfless devotion to this country that we remain free. Free to voice our opinion regarding the president, free to travel this great world, free to have a religion or not, free to enjoy the country whenever we choose. I wish I could articulate more deserving words.

With the utmost respect,

-Kyle Henderson

Today, we take a look at each bracket, the match-ups and the must see prospects in each classification.

First Round Schedule/Times

La Cueva v. Onate, 1pm, 11/12, Field of Dreams
Atrisco v. Manzano, 7pm 11/11, Wilson
Eldorado v. Clovis, 7pm, 11/11, Clovis
Mayfield v. Volcano Vista, 7pm, 11/11, Community

6A Overview

When the selection committee sat down on Saturday there was not much argument between the top-3 spots in the state tournament. The three have sat atop the NMPreps Fab 50 Rankings for weeks now and were the easy teams to place. For the most part we all knew the 12 but where to place 4-12 came next.

Rio Rancho (1), Cleveland (2) and Las Cruces (3) took home the top slots. District 3-6A also got the runner up in the district with a bye in the state tournament with the Centennial Hawks earning the 4-seed.

Manzano, the district 2-6A champion, received the 5-seed and will host the district 4-6A champion Atrisco Heritage Academy Jaguars. They had some argument to take the last bye as the 4-seed but a loss to Centennial early in the season placed them at 5. Clovis at 6, Volcano Vista for the second season at 7 and Onate at 8 are the other teams earning a home game in the state playoffs.

Five Players to Watch

Josh Foley (Rio Rancho): Without a doubt the top player in the state of New Mexico this season. Foley, leads 6A in rushing yards with 1,549-yards and 25-touchdowns (1 shy of the lead in 6A). Rio Rancho is 10-0 and the 1-seed in the state playoffs.

Payton Ball (Las Cruces): We have him on our Top 20 Quarterbacks to watch in the playoffs. Ball, has been phenomal this season both on the ground, make the read or hitting multiple receivers for big yards. He has 2,047-passing yards with 21 passing touchdowns this season.

Micah Gray (Clovis): The Wildcats lost a little steam as District Runner Ups in 2-6A but are the team to keep a close eye on, especially with a talent like Gray on the roster. He is second in 6A rushing with 1,404-yards and a leading 26-touchdowns.

David Cormier (Volcano Vista):
Cormier, is a special player who has recently received interest from UNLV of the Mountain West. He has 777-yards receiving and 11-touchdowns on the year. The Hawks are the 7-seed and having a great season.

Forest Mckee (Onate):
Mckee is the top ranked defensive player in New Mexico. We seen that at the combine, and he has proven it all season. Mckee, leads the state in total tackles with 136 and 3 sacks. The Knights are the 8-seed in the state tournament.

Upset Alert

Mayfield:
The Trojans are the favorite in this section as they have the most talent we've seen in awhile for a 10-seed. Volcano Vista took the first meeting between the two programs on September 16th, a 35-21 win. Looking at the match ups in the opening round this one has the best radar for a possible upset - even though Volcano Vista has answered all calls this season - it's just hard to disregard the history Mayfield has on it's end.

Dark Horse

Clovis: The 6-seed in the state tournament was nearly on our upset alert section with visiting Eldorado heading to town. However, we opted for betting on the Wildcats. They have a chance to do big things against the Bulldawgs in the quarterfinals if they get passed Eldorado. I like the defense and running back options.

5-12 Seed That Could Reach the Semi-Finals

Manzano:
Apparently we have two teams that could go in this section (read above). The Monarchs held an early lead in the first meeting with 4-seed Centennial early in the season. Bth teams are playing well right now and this could be the must see game in the quarterfinals.

First Round Predictions

Manzano over Atrisco
Onate over La Cueva
Volcano Vista over Mayfield
Clovis over Eldorado
