Arizona recruits . . . a familiar tale?

This article from the Arizona Republic focuses on the top 25 senior football players in Arizona, and the status of their recruiting: http://www.azcentral.com/story/spor...-high-school-football-seniors-stand/79303816/

As you scroll through them, you will see a few common threads that may sound familiar, such as 1) very few will play for one of the two Division I programs in their state; 2) many have no DI offers at all; and 3) some will have to go to junior colleges with the hope of attracting attention after a year or two.

Belen wins Kirby Tournament

Belen won their own tournament this past Saturday by beating a combined J.V. and Varsity Cleveland team. It was disappointing that Cleveland did not wrestle their entire Varsity team. Cleveland had beaten Belen on Friday night varsity to varsity 31 to 30. I guess the Cleveland coach did not want to risk having any of his 6A kids taking a loss to 5A kids because of how it would affect seeding's at state. Both teams are very good and are definitely contenders for state titles. Silver and Saint Mikes also looked very good and both will be a force in 4A.

Week 10: The Week That Was

Week 10: The Week That Was
Joshua J Grine

The excitement of the 2015-2016 season continues as we had a buzzer beater, a major upset and a 47-point performance.

The Big Five For Week 10

Top Performance by a NMPreps.com Mr. Basketball Candidate: Pierre Swain may have been a name flying under the finalist radar but a 47-point performance could have the young fella on the radar.

Hmm, Houston We Have A Problem: The Volcano Vista Hawks might be struggling to take flight as a playoff team. Currently they are (7-10, 0-2) on the season and riding a three game losing streak. Could this team with some favorable wins on their resume miss out? They have a 'play-in' game with Santa Fe coming up. The answer soon to be revealed.

Carlsbad starting to take form: If you have watched a Caveman team play, they never seem rattled. Yes, they took a minor dip mid-season but they seem to be building for the right time in the season. Coincidence? I think not, just like watching a Coach Brown team they are just following progress in a season peaking at the right time. Hope you haven't sold stock yet.

Hey, hello there: The Pirates of Grants could be back on top of the race for the 1-seed in 5A. The smashing win over West Las Vegas looked convincing and if the Dons go for the DC it could only help in the criteria. At (15-3, 0-0) don't forget about the Pirates just yet (Yes, last week I had Roswell here saying they were the runaway favorite....maybe the runaway bride now.)

So 3A is kind of crowded. Make room for some late season crashers: Santa Rosa over Laguna-Acoma on the road. Desert Academy upsets Dulce. Lordsburg drops its first game (really doesn't hurt as it was to Cliff). Estancia at 12-3. Navajo Prep at 14-5 might not lose from here on out. Seeds? Well, lets save that for another day.

NMPreps.com Week 10 Awards

Player of the Week: Martin Trujillo, Los Lunas High School

Trujillo is the type of player any coach would love to have. Can do work in the paint, can hit from the outside and just an even kill young man. He went for 18 points in a HUGE win over Centennial and then back it up with 17 against Santa Teresa. Trujillo, might be one of the most consistent players in 5A and rising as a favorite for Player of the Year. Oh, and did we mention he is only a junior.

Coach of the Week: Travis Julian, Los Lunas High School

The Tigers are another team like Carlsbad where they continue to get better as the season progresses. Not to high, never too low. The fiery coach has the Tigers in position to make some noise in March. They went 2-0 this week with wins over Centennial and Santa Teresa.

Team of the Week: Bernalillo Spartans

The Spartans looked to be a good team searching for a way into the State Tournament. Well, a signature win like the one over Capital was the game that they needed.

Timeout: Questions after Week 9

Tournament Worthy?: Kirtland Central (6-12, 2-0). The Broncos are 2-0 in District play, winning the District would automatically get them in. However, what happens if they finish second? Well, one thing helps over other Bubble Teams in 4A is the fact they have a W over a DC in Laguna-Acoma.

4 Bid District?: District 3-6A. Onate, Gadsden, Las Cruces and potentially Mayfield. I couldn't see why not. That means 1-6A sends 4, 3-6A sends 4, that leaves 8-spots for 2, 4 and 5-6A. 2-6A might be back to a one bid league.

Bubble OUT?: 6A - Clovis, West Mesa, Highland, Alamogordo, Deming. Right now of the 24 teams, 8 stay at home and I'm comfortable saying OUT. The only way is winning the DC tournament as I just can't see them winning the regular season DC.

Leftovers: Unofficial Awards

Hall Pass: Bryce Rewalt, Centennial. 6 3-pointers and 28 points later, please take note of this young man. That's a huge night for any player and one playing a team a classification above, on the road, is impressive.

Free Lunch Ticket: Holt Shelley, Cliff. The young man pulled down 16 rebounds on Tuesday night (double-double with 14 points). Then he followed that up with a 16 points and 20 rebound night!

Student of the Week: Ty Darnell, Bernalillo. The 36-point night that caught the attention of everyone in the state. Hit 8-three's in an upset win over a then Top-10 team in the state of New Mexico.

Homework Pass: Ralph Cueto, Carlsbad. Well, nice to meet you Ralph Cueto. The young man has led the Cavemen in scoring a few games the last two weeks and catching the attention under the radar. Has 15 in an upset win over Roswell.
