What Did We Learn During Week Three?

3A - Week Three Review

Still plenty of Top-10 teams not in action and we covered some of 3A in our feature, Is Something Getting Interesting in 3A. The team catching catching plenty of favorite votes is the Lordsburg Mavericks after going to Cliff and beating the Cowboys on their home court. Texico had a solid week winning all three of their games for the week. Pecos took the runner-up trophy at the Santa Fe Indian Tournament this weekend. Dexter is back on the scene after going 3-1 over the week.

Players Who Stood Out

Greg Gabaldon, Dexter High School: Mentioned that he went for over 40 points in a contest last week. The Demons are back on the scene and Gabaldon is a name to know moving forward.

Arturo Archuleta, Pecos High School: The Pecos Panthers are another program that returns to the Top-10 and Archuleta is the athlete that we turn to for the Panthers.

Ray Saucedeo, Lordsburg High School: Took home an all-tournament award after the Mavericks won the Cliff Tournament over the weekend.

For the few of you who keep up with Texas Football, Mansfield High beat Denton Guyer yesterday 44-7 winning the Regional Championship for 6A Division II. We are about to start our 5th week of post-season. Mansfield Lake Ridge also won beating Longview 56-53. This is Lake Ridge's 4th year in existence. We play Lake Travis next Saturday. Allen won their 58th straight game to go into the Semis in Large School Division I 6A. NMOC's brother who coaches at Albany also gets into semis after losing 6 starters to season ending injuries this year. They are 2A and at a small school to loose that many and remain dominate shows great Coaching talent.

Is it to early to make judgement but the loss to West Mesa was a bit shocker to me. Is La Cueva the front runner now? What about Eldorado hanging close with Rio Grande last night? Manzano is (2-0). Who is the favorite?Does Highland come through in March? They had some hype this summer.

2015 Cleveland went 13-0, scored 645 (new big school record) had a point differential of 50-16 with 3 shutouts. The 2011 Cleveland team went 13-0, scored 641, allowed 2018 and had a point differential of 49-16 with 3 shutouts. 2014 Rio Rancho checks in at No. 31 overall scoring 589 points and allowing 230 which was a point differential of 45-18 with 2 shutouts.

How does Centennial rank above Artesia? Across the board season wise, Centennial scored 611 points, allowed 205 and had a point differential of 47-16. Artesia scored 507 and allowed 277 which is a point differential of 39-21. On paper, Centennial should of won this game, but as you know coaching, tradition, experience, missing a 2pt conversion is something the computer cannot account for. 2014 Artesia checks in at No. 71 scoring 564 and allowing 299 on the season.

The All-Time greatest Artesia Team according to our numbers was the 2006 Bulldogs who went 13-0 and outscored the comp 57-6-185 with 4 shutouts.

Week Three: Weekend Recap

There were several tournaments this weekend that saw great basketball action. Many teams walked out of the weekend with a perfect record, while others found out exactly what they need to work on to improve.

Teams

The Logan Longhorns (3-0) won a tournament by defeating Bosque, NACA and Coronado (TX). They didn’t allow an opponent to get over 25 points this weekend and scored a total of 143 points throughout the tournament.

Shiprock hosted the Jerry Richardson Memorial tournament and came away with the blue trophy. They defeated Navajo Pine by 65 points, San Juan by 49 and Farmington by 24. It’s safe to say Shiprock will ve another 4A powerhouse this season.

Tularosa headed to Santa Rosa this weekend where they dominated to take the first place trophy. They started off by taking down Rehoboth 74-34, then knocked out Fort Sumner with a 27 point victory, then handed a defeat to Tucumcari with a score of 80 to 34. Cassie Vickery, a Junior and Senior Shania Gilliland led the pack for the Wildcats. Vickery scored a total of 78 points this weekend, while Gilliland had a 53 point tournament.

The Gallup Bengals (5-0) were another team to win their home tournament this weekend. They dominated Tohatchi by a score of 101-66 in the first round. Then knocked out Miyamura and Cleveland for the trophy. The Bengals did not score less than 75 points all weekend.

Piedra Vista was crowned champions as well this weekend. They took down Taos, Navajo Prep and Jemez Valley. Nikki Benally, a senior, paved the way for the Panthers by scoring more than 20 points in every game. Her best game came in the championship where she knocked down 28.

In non-tournament games, several metro teams dominated the court, while some southern teams remain undefeated.

Cibola tacked onto their 3-0 start this season with a 69-18 victory over Rio Grande.
Eldorado took a 4 point victory over Mayfield.
La Cueva split the weekend with two former state champions, with a 4 point loss to Hope Christian and a 10 point victory over Los Lunas.
Valley took down Rio Rancho with a score of 55-45 and Volcano remains perfect at 3-0 with a 61-43 win over Los Alamos.
Cuba is now 5-0 after a nice victory over Penasco.
Lovington opened their season with an easy victory over Ruidoso, while Roswell (3-0) took down 6A powerhouse, Mayfield by 4 points.

Top Players from Week Three

Several players throughout the state had some big games this weekend to help their team on the tournament road. Jade Hill of Cleveland knocked in 27 points and brought down 15 rebounds against Winslow (AZ). Capital played Chaparral and Gabriella Ortiz dropped 17, while teammate Rachel Friend had 12 points and 10 rebounds. Sophie Long has continued to lead the way for the Academy Chargers, as she had a double- double, with 18 points and 10 rebounds against Del Norte. Goddard Senior Jenna Hernandez had an important 19 point game against Santa Fe. Kara Burton, a senior at Springer had to 20 plus point games this weekend at the Trinidad State Junior College Invite.

2015-16 Preview

The Mesilla Valley Christian SonBlazers have been one of the top programs in small school division hoops the last five years. A pair of titles, one coming last season under third year head coach Jeremy Roman and the SonBlazers are the program you think of when you look at 3A basketball.

The SonBlazers ran to a title last season led by a few talented, departed, seniors but will again be the team to consider as the favorites in the division. Dalton Rice (2016/Forward) and Josh Estrada (2017/Guard-Wing) are the two that will look to continue the winning tradition alive for the SonBlazers.

Also, from class 3A is the Lordsburg Mavericks who check in at No. 2 on our NMPreps.com Top-20 rankings. The Mavericks return their entire roster off a 15-14, 4-3 state tournament team. This could be the most experienced team in the classification this season. Look for Jacob Esquivel and Raymond Saucedo to lead the stampede for the Mavericks this season.

The third ranked Tucumcari Rattlers have one of the top overall prospects in Small School Division basketball in John Paul Garcia. Garcia, is one of the most feared shooters and basketball minded payers in the state. Look for him to take the Rattlers back to the WisePies Arena aka The PIT in March. If you like stories and players that will be talked about in Tucumcari for years to come, John Paul Garcia is the one to go watch.

Rounding out the top-5 is the Cliff Cowboys (4) and the Texico Wolverines (5). The Cliff Cowboys are coached by one of the top head coaches in the state of New Mexico and return a stud player of their own in Holt Shelly. The Wolverines return Brannan Karger to the team as they look to finally reach the promise land after two close encounters.

John Paul Garcia, Tucumcari HS/2016: The senior shooting guard is quick, has a good basketball IQ and by far one of the most clutch 3-point shooters in the state.

Francis Castillo Y Mulert, Santa Fe Prep/2016: Another guard that you already know about but you need to go watch this kid. A 6'1 shooting/point guard who can truly hoop.

Jorrell Mirabal, Magdalena HS/2016: Another small town basketball junkie that understands the game and can shoot with the best of them.

Cade Barnard, Melrose HS/2016: When you think of athletes that are all-around athletes in small school hoops Bernard is likely atop that list.

Nathan Bates, Evangel Christian/2016: Smart guard with great size for 1A basketball. Bates, plays year-round basketball and can beat you with a confident shooting touch or off the dribble.

Rick Horner longtime head coach at Piedra Vista takes over at Navajo Prep. This could be an intriguing team this season.

Hagerman is not in the Top-20 but don't be surprised if you see this team late in March.

Pecos is led by a sophomore and this will be their best team since they had the big run a few years back. Archuleta is one to keep an eye on.

Clyde Sanchez takes over at Santa Fe Prep.

Santa Rosa has been floating around the last couple years, their point guard is one to watch. His name is the same as their head coach, reason why he is a smart hoops player?

Eunice could be this intriguing team this season, their head coach is solid and have heard nothing but great things on her. Met her once and can tell she is ready to take them into March.

Did you know that Omar N'Diaye (Monte Del Sol) is playing college basketball at division one Northern Arizona? I didn't.

No. 3 Onate Knights (2-1) shined their light on the No. 10 Volcano Vista (1-1) Hawks in a 19-point win (58-39). The No. 4 Hope Christian Huskies (1-0) sled their way past the Atrisco Jaguars (0-3) to the first win of the season, 66-59. No. 6 Hobbs Eagles (2-2) fall to 3-2 with a one point loss to Odessa, Texas, 74-73. No. 1 Carlsbad 64, No. 25 Goddard 53: The Carlsbad Cavemen (1-0) opened the season with a close call against 5A Goddard (1-1) on Tuesday night. Brenden Boatwright led the way for the Cavemen with 21-points on the night. LeAnthony Harrison paced the way for Goddard with 23-points.

No. 7 Rio Rancho 67, No. 20 Espanola Valley 56: The Rams move to (2-0) on the season with a Top-25 win over Espanola Valley (2-1) at home on Tuesday. The Rams were led by junior guard Clay Patterson who finished the night with 24 points. Juan Hurt also poured in 19 points in the win for the Rams. Uriah Arrellano led the way for the Sundevils with 24 points.

No. 9 Grants 64, Piedra Vista 55: The Grants Pirates improved to (2-0) on the season with a 9-point win over Piedra Vista Tuesday night. Junior shooting guard Matt Vail led the way for the Pirates with 17 points. Three other Pirates finished the evening with 14 points in the win.

No. 17 Rio Grande 61, No. 18 Capital 56: The Ravens of Rio Grande moved to (2-0) on the season with a Top-25 win over Capital (1-1). The Ravens were led by Marshall Moore who had 22 points on the evening. Jeremy Anaya (14 points) and Eric Coca (12 points) led the way for Capital.

No. 23 Los Lunas 40, Kirtland Central 27: Kayden Walker and Martin Trujillo led the way for the Tigers (1-1) on the road with 13 points each. The Tigers evened their record to (1-1) while the Broncos open their season (0-1).

Clay Patterson, G/Jr, Rio Rancho HS: The junior guard has opened the season with back-to-back 20-point games, this one finishing with 24.

Marshall Moore, G/Sr, Rio Grande HS: In the South Valley Marshall Moore helped the Ravens move to 2-0 with a 22-point performance.

Brenden Boatwright, F/Jr., Carlsbad HS: Boatwright led the way for the Cavemen with 21-points, helping the number one team in New Mexico start (1-0).

TRENDING: THE BIG FIVE FOR WEEK 3

The Big Five each week we take a look at the headlines that stick out to us and the one every person that loves hoops should know about.

1. The 64 Point Night: We have to start on the ladies side with Ramah High School guard Jordan Lewis going off for 64-points! Lewis hit thirteen 3-pointers on the night in a 19-point win for Ramah. Likely a record breaking night for Lewis.

2. Capital Protecting New Mexico: On a week that New Mexico teams struggled against our visitors the Jaguars led by this nice little duo held their own. The Jaguars beat Pueblo West (Colorado), 52-45 in the title game of the Al Armendariz Tournament (Santa Fe, New Mexico). The Jaguars went (3-0) during the tournament.

3. Another 5A Power, Still A Power: The St. Pius X Sartans are off to a (3-0) start with two wins over Top-10 5A ranked teams in Gallup and Bernalillo. This week the Sartans completely trashed Los Alamos (75-49) and Bernalillo (75-43).

4. The Pride of the Valley....Might be For Real: The Rio Grande Ravens moved to (4-0) on the season with a three wins this week over Capital, Eldorado and La Cueva. Not to sure if the Ravens under head coach Sean Jimenez have ever beat Eldorado and La Cueva in the same season.

5. Add These Two Teams To The 4A Convo?: Still to early to tell but the Pojoaque Valley Elks moved to (3-0) beating Kirtland Central (67-45) this week in an outcome that we didn't see happening by that amount. Also, the Bloomfield Bobcats we see you! A (4-0) start with a win over Shiprock (43-41) in the Shiprock Tournament.

1. Highland (0-3): The Hornets have played a brutal schedule and still the best winless team. Losses to Cleveland, Hope and Rio Rancho.
2. Atrisco Heritage (0-3): Not a bad schedule with losses to Sandia, Gallup and Hope. However, this trend my go into January. They have La Cueva, Eldorado and Cibola up next.

1. Johnny McCants, Sr/F, Onate HS: Yes, we all are well aware of McCants but each night he is putting up double-doubles are close to it. This week again he led his team to wins, one over top-10 ranked Valley in a game he put 20-points down. He also had 18 in a win over Volcano Vista. Last Week No. 1

2. Clay Patterson, Jr/G, Rio Rancho HS: Patterson, the junior for the Rams, has been on a hot streak since the start of the season. This week he again put in two big games, he put 24 points on Espanola Valley and a 25 point, 6 assist night against Highland.

3. Eric Coca, Sr/G, Capital HS: Coca is certainly the name to know in 5A basketball this season. Averaged roughly 15 points per game this week, leading his team to the championship of the Al Armendariz Tournament.

4. Marshall Moore, G/Sr, Rio Grande HS: Averaged 20 points a game (22 vs. Capital/18 vs La Cueva) this week. Moore, might have been off the radar this season in regards to the top award but you can see he tops the list now. The Ravens are (4-0) and he is playing well.

5. Uriah Arellano, Sr/G, Espanola Valley HS: Another guard that has been mentioned, so why not place him on the radar. Arellano, averaged 16 points a game this week along with around 5 assists per game. The one that sticks out is a 24-point performance against Rio Rancho.

Just Missed the List: Juan Hurt (Rio Rancho), Matt Vail (Grants), Jeremy Anaya (Capital), Emillo Arellano (St. Pius X), Anthony Chavez (Valley), Brendan Boatwright (Carlsbad).

Feature: Is Something Getting Interesting in 3A?

Normally, when you think of the small school divisions you can pick one or two teams in each classification (3A - 1A) that is almost a sure thing to win it all. Well, this season in 3A we might find a crowded bunch that could take it all in March.

We are only three weeks in though?

Yes, I know that but right now teams are playing well and for sake of conversation let;s take a stab at what I am thinking with my morning coffee.

RED OR GREEN (MILD OR HOT)

Red Hot - Our Contenders
Tucumcari High School (1-0): The Rattlers have only one game in the books but a 95-41 thrashing, they are a favorite. Plus having one of the best players in small school division basketball places them among the top. This preseason they were ranked 3rd in our Top-20 rankings of small school division teams.

Green Mild - Taste Nice in December but what about March?
Pecos Panthers (3-0): It's been a few seasons since the Panthers were the ranked the top team in the classification but a (3-0) start has us looking differently at the Panthers. Maybe a reach in the contenders section but something about the Panthers has us intrigued. They stomped Wingate a 4A team and have another thrashing of Hot Springs another 4A team on their early resume.

Red Hot - A chile we all know but do we take the known restaurant choice?
Texico Wolverines (2-0): The Wolverines, well they are the Wolverines. The program that is close each season and has played for a title game. Is this the season that they make the run and finish the job? They won last night 54-45 over NMMI a 4A team to boost their resume. The game to circle is a date with Tucumcari on December 8th.

Red Hot - The Chile of the Year Last Year, Do you go with it again or try something new?
Mesilla Valley Christian Son Blazers (0-0): The defending champs are still practicing but the champs are the favorites this preseason and likely a team that plays in the Final Four at the very least. More judgment coming soon as they start playing.

Christmas Red/Green Mix - Can't Go Wrong With taking both. Does this program finally get over the hump? I took them two years ago but that didn't work out.
Lordsburg Mavericks (0-0): Still a prediction at this point in the season but they have Raymond Saucedo and Jacob Esquivel, need we say more?

Laguna-Acoma (0-0): Played a couple titles recently.
Santa Rosa (0-0): They have PG I like.
Clayton (0-0): Have been close but did they lose to much flavor?
Eunice (0-0): The Cardinals could be the unknown new item.

MIGHT BE LEAVING THE MENU FOR LACK OF FLAVOR

Santa Fe Prep (1-4): The Blue Griffins fell to (1-4) on the season with a loss to Questa last night. They have been a favorite last three years but might be time to avoid this item or move it to the value menu.

BRINGING BACK A FAVORITE

Dexter (1-0): The Demons had a magical season two years ago. Well, after a big upset win over Ruidoso to start the season the Demons come back to the menu with some spice.

COULD BE A NEW TASTE WITH A VETERAN COOK

Navajo Prep (3-2): Maybe, too early to tell right now on the Eagles but they hired a veteran head coach in Rick Hoerner (former Piedra Vista head coach). They have an impressive win over 4A Bosque that will only boost this team.
