Preseason Rankings: No. 33 Belen Eagles

The 2015-2016 season has officially started and today we start our countdown of the top 50 programs in New Mexico Big School Division (6A-4A).

More: Preseason Rankings Home | Rankings 72-51 | Preseason Preview Page

The Belen Eagles return in 2015-2016 after going 14-13, 7-5 last season. The Eagles reached the state tournament falling in the first round to Gallup, 72-69 in a close game.

Overview: When the Belen Eagles made this hire for the 2012-2013 season, I claimed it was the best thing the program could have done. Well, I live by that statement and could see this being one of the best teams under head coach Patrick Mondragon. The Eagles graduate six players from last season but return some talent that they are excited about in Belen. This could be the year that they have been waiting for and this county will be a sweet spot for basketball this year. It will be tough replacing two posts like Chavez and Ulibarri but two players who could pick up that slack are Ryan Padilla (F/6'0/2016) and Bryan Valdez (G/6'2/2016).

Last Season
Record: 14-13, 7-5
Home Record: 6-6
Away Record: 6-4
Post Season: First Round, lost to Gallup (72-69)
Points per game: 51.5 (1393)
Points against: 46.8 (1264)

Realistic Prediction: The one number that sticks out is holding teams under 47 points per game. This has to be considered one of the better defensive programs (and what's the old saying, "defensive wins championships"). Many have the Eagles lower (1-5 area) but right now we are going to use the phrase we won't reward you until you earn it. They very well could be ranked that low but for now we but them just outside of the Top-25. I will put them in the 15-19 win range, a playoff team but winning a game will be just as hard as last season.

District Champ: 61%: Centennial and Los Lunas are the favorites.
Playoff Team: 99%
Elite Eight: 32.9%
Final Four: 4%
Title Game: 1%

Returning Players: The Eagles are getting better and developing this program the right way. As mentioned they have voids to fill but have some solid prospects who contributed big already last season. They will have depth in both the backcourt and front court, something teams lack moving forward each season. They will have strengths at both in terms of bodies.

Preseason Rankings: No. 29 Atrisco Heritage Academy Jaguars

The 2015-2016 season has officially started and today we start our countdown of the top 50 programs in New Mexico Big School Division (6A-4A).

More: Preseason Rankings Home | Rankings 72-51 | Preseason Preview Page

Atrisco Heritage Academy is coming off a 13-13 season that resulted in a state tournament appearance.

Overview: Just two years removed from the state championship game and the Jaguars will replace more key players from that roster. The three leading scorers from last season have graduated, Leading rebounder is gone as well. Estevan Martinez (2016) will look to improve on his numbers from last season at 4.8 points per game and 5 rebounds a contest. Head coach Adrian Ortega is one of the best at getting his team to understand the game and game situations, the program is going through a transition but could be on the upset alert any night and part of the next five in of the Top-25.

Last Season
Record: 13-13, 2-6
Home Record: 7-2
Away Record: 4-7
Post Season: First Round; Lost to Cleveland (60-45)
Points per game: 59.1 (1538)
Points against: 57.6 (1500)

Realistic Prediction: I really like the way Ortega's teams play and have always praised their basketball IQ during situations. The issue is the talent is nowhere near that of the state championship runner-up team. It's going to take another year or so. We could see them flirting around the 10-14 win mark and fighting on the bubble for a playoff spot, much like last season. The bench lacked depth, more because of experience and they hand one of the younger benches in 6A.

District Champ: 70%
Playoff Team: 62%
Elite Eight: 15%
Final Four: 5%
Title Game: 1%

Returning Players: Above we mentioned the loss of some key players from last season, also that the scoring reigns handed to wing Estevan Martinez. Another prospect mentioned is guard Andres Gurule (2016) who led the team in assists.

Preseason Rankings: No. 37 Piedra Vista Panthers

The 2015-2016 season has officially started and today we start our countdown of the top 50 programs in New Mexico Big School Division (6A-4A).

More: Preseason Rankings Home | Rankings 72-51 | Preseason Preview Page

Piedra Vista comes into the season ranked 37th in the state after a (13-16, 4-4) season that seen them reach the state tournament.

Overview: Head coach Adam Huff has put is staple on the Panthers program and they will be looking to build off a successful campaign in 2014-2015. The Panthers graduate five players including their leading scorer and rebounder leaving voids to fill. The Panthers averaged 55 points per game last season and hope to continue as an uptempo team for the most part. Many of the games that they won early in the season they were putting in 60 points or high 50's. Keegan Acosta (6'2"/2016) returns as one of the players to watch this season. Acosta had 8 points per game along with 3.6 rebounds, both numbers that will rise this season.

Last Season
Record: 13-16, 4-4
Home Record: 4-6
Away Record: 4-6
Post Season: First Round, lost to Grants (55-53)
Points per game: 54.9 (1593)
Points against: 54 (1566)

Realistic Prediction: Replacing your top scorer is always a difficult thing to do but the underclassmen for the Panthers could be players that make an immediate impact. They return five seniors and three sophomores to create a well balanced team to be above the mid-line in 5A basketball. We could see around 15-win season and battling for the District (we think it's wide open this season with Gallup replacing it's head coach).

District Champ: 90%
Playoff Team: 90%
Elite Eight: 60%
Final Four: 20%
Title Game: 1%

Returning Players: The Panthers graduated 5-players but have enough young depth to replace those holes with. Along with Acosta, Jimmy Wood (2016) will be another senior to help the Panthers each the Elite Eight in 2016. Wood averaged 5.3 points, 3.5 rebounds per contest.

Paraskividedatriphobia Today?

Paraskevidekatriphobia is the word for fear of Friday the 13th also known as Black Friday. Good "luck" to all of the teams out there competing today in whatever sport. If you lose, the good news is that you can blame it on Friday the 13th. LOL As for me, it is the number that almost everything about me is based on; right down to my 13th birthday was Friday the 13th. My Mom bought me a horseshoe shaped gold ring with 13 diamonds in it. Which I promptly lost being that young. My first and last names have 13 letters as do my Mom's, Dad's, and Grandparents' names. My birthplace has 13 letters. The first letter of my last name is the 13th letter of the alphabet. I could go on for hours with stats about this. But, I have always felt blessed and lucky. Such as, my 13th birthday was the very last number drawn for my draft year which kept me out of Vietnam.

For some fun reading...The Great Seal of the United States has 13 stars, 13 stripes, 13 feathers in the Eagle's left wing, 13 feathers in the Eagle's right wing, 13 feathers in the tail, 13 arrows in the Eagles left talon, 13 leaves on the olive branch, 13 olives on that branch, 13 clouds in the sky above the Eagle and 13 letters in the motto e-pluribus-unum. On the back side there are 13 steps or layers on the pyramid base, 13 plants in front of the pyramid and finally 13 letters on the motto Annuit Coeptis. That count is 13 13's. Good luck today especially if you read this and have Paraskevidekatriphobia.

Week 12 Questions To Answer

1. Is there anything at all you would recommend changing to the playoff selection criteria?
2. What are your thoughts on Alamogordo? Were they good this year or just play a soft up-front schedule?
3. Is the top side or bottom side of the bracket stronger in the class which you follow?
4. Is Cleveland the most dominate team we've had in the last 10-years?
5. You can give out One D-1 Offer to a player that does not yet have one, who are you giving it to and why?

Preseason Rankings: No. 30 West Las Vegas Dons

The 2015-2016 season has officially started and today we start our countdown of the top 50 programs in New Mexico Big School Division (6A-4A).

More: Preseason Rankings Home | Rankings 72-51 | Preseason Preview Page

The West Las Vegas Dons are coming off a state runner-up finish at (24-6, 5-1) and one of their better seasons in recent history.

Overview: We all are aware that the West Las Vegas Dons have arguably one of the best players in the state (Top-10 this summer). DJ Bustos returns for his junior season and the 6-foot-3 spot up shooting guard hopes to build off last season. However, head coach David Bustos' will have to replace six seniors and big contributors during their state tournament run.

Last Season
Record: 24-6, 5-1
Home Record: 8-1
Away Record: 6-2
Post Season: State Championship; lost to Hope Christian (69-57)
Points per game: 70.6 (2118)
Points against: 54.23 (1627)

Realistic Prediction: The Dons have some impressive stats and most people would, and do, have them ranked in the Top-25. Yes, they scored about 71 points per game holding their opponents to 54 a game but this team did graduate some key players that we saw in both the Final Four and State Title game. They played an interesting schedule from Wagon Mound in 1A to Santa Fe in 6A and likely you will see those teams again. They will win around 20 and a Final Four favorite as our prediction.

District Champ: 90%
Playoff Team: 100%
Elite Eight: 95%
Final Four: 80%
Title Game: 75%

Returning Players: DJ Bustos is without question among the better players in the state. We also liked Miguel Sena who played well, maybe should have played more during his hot streak making big shots down the stretch in the title game and will be a viable second option.

Preseason Rankings: No. 34 Bernalillo Spartans

The 2015-2016 season has officially started and today we start our countdown of the top 50 programs in New Mexico Big School Division (6A-4A).

More: Preseason Rankings Home | Rankings 72-51 | Preseason Preview Page

The Bernalillo Spartans return this season after a (19-12, 5-3) season and Elite Eight appearance beating district rival Del Norte in the first round.

Overview: The Spartans had success last season, graduated four players and looking to be a favorite in 5A basketball going into 2015-2016. The Spartans return shooting guard Ty Darnell (6'1/2016) along with eight seniors who were all on varsity as juniors last season. The experience, the depth and the coaching is definitely there and this could be a Final Four season. Right now we have them floating around tenth in 5A but don't be shocked to see this team rise. The thing with Bernalilllo and having a solid shooting guard is the fear that he goes off for 30 on any given night. Anytime that they have had good shooting guards they either win the title (2004 & 2005) or make the Final Four.

Last Season
Record: 19-12, 5-3
Home Record: 8-4
Away Record: 6-5
Post Season: Elite Eight, lost to Centennial (64-46)
Points per game: 57.5 (1784)
Points against: 53.9 (1672)

Realistic Prediction: Sometimes with Bernalillo we are either spot on or they are the team that surprises us. 19 wins last season was impressive and this team could be better? Well, that is the reason that we are putting them a bit higher than most on the list. Dare we predict 20 wins? Well, going to play it safe and say the 15-19 range, because their district is tough and will wait to see the rest of their pre-district schedule. I would be shocked if they make the Elite Eight but won't go as far as say Final Four because there is tons of parity in 5A.

District Champ: 80%
Playoff Team: 99%
Elite Eight: 52.3%
Final Four: 26%
Title Game: 1%

Returning Players: We mentioned that they return eight seniors(!). Most of them are guards, and that's okay for the style of play Bernalillo runs, and this team has some things to keep you entertained this season. A pair of Darnell's on the roster are intriguing, if they shoot anything like Head Coach Terry Darnell then they are set.
