Preseason Rankings: No. 32 Mayfield Trojans

The 2015-2016 season has officially started and today we start our countdown of the top 50 programs in New Mexico Big School Division (6A-4A).

More: Preseason Rankings Home | Rankings 72-51 | Preseason Preview Page

The final season for longtime head coach Tommy Morrow has come and gone, the Trojans finished the 2014-2015 season 9-18, 3-5 missing the 2015 post season.

Overview: The Mayfield Trojans for the first time in sixteen seasons the Trojans will have a new head coach roaming the sidelines. Billy Keys comes over from 5A Centennial in Las Cruces where he served as lead assistant to the 2015 state champions. The Trojans will be in the beginning stages of a change in style of play but will have eight varsity players returning from last season and likely gone are the 40-point win games. Returning as a varsity player since his freshman season is Ismael Holguin (2017/PG) who will give the Trojans immediate help bring an uptempo style.

Last Season
Record: 9-18, 3-5
Home Record: 4-7
Away Record: 2-7
Post Season: Missed the playoffs
Points per game: 51 (1403)
Points against: 54 (1469)

Realistic Prediction: The Trojans administration made a huge hire bringing in a fresh, top assistant from the off-season. Billy Keys will surely bring a new energy to a program that has taken a step back in recent history. However, that may take time to get the program above .500 or as an Elite Eight threat in year one but if any year this might be the year to be the team that improves the most from one year to the next. I will say 10-14 wins, maybe a playoff spot at the back end (15-16 seed).

District Champ: 33%
Playoff Team: 52%
Elite Eight: 17%
Final Four: 3%
Title Game: 1%

Returning Players: The Trojans graduate five players from last season but the hype is there with some of the returning lettermen that the Trojans have. As mentioned we are intrigued by a three year letterman in Ismael Holguin.

Preseason Rankings: No. 27 Artesia Bulldogs

The 2015-2016 season has officially started and today we start our countdown of the top 50 programs in New Mexico Big School Division (6A-4A).

More: Preseason Rankings Home | Rankings 72-51 | Preseason Preview Page

Head coach Mike Mondragon has put his stamp on the program and year two could be promising after a 14-17 season along with an Elite Eight on is resume.

Overview: The Bulldogs almost played for the Final Four last season losing by a single point to the Espanola Valley Sundevils in the Elite Eight. Head coach Mike Mondragon has been regarded as one of the top up and coming head coaches and this could be a year that he puts himself on the top of that list. The Bulldogs do graduate some key prospects from that team and will have to fill those voids. Justin Houghtaling returns for his senior season after scoring 7 points per game along with 7 rebounds per contest last season.

Last Season
Record: 14-17, 3-6
Home Record: 5-7
Away Record: 5-5
Post Season: Elite Eight; Lost to Espanola Valley (52-51)
Points per game: 53.5 (1661)
Points against: 55 (1708)

Realistic Prediction: No other team peaked at the right time like the Bulldogs and much of that carry over led to the low ranking of 28 on the preseason list. The Bulldogs are typically a preseason team that you would find higher around the 40's. This might be a season they jump into the Top-25 early or be a middle of the pack 5A team. If you can't tell, I like Mondragon's teams (Moriarty and Artesia), they play hard, they know his system and they give everything. This team has athletes and could see them more in the 15-19 win mark, even with a strong schedule that they typically play. Elite Eight for now again but I wouldn't be surprised to see them in the Final Four.

District Champ: 71%
Playoff Team: 97%
Elite Eight: 79%
Final Four: 49.49%
Title Game: 19%

Returning Players: The star quarterback for the Artesia football program, Houghtaling was mentioned above but this team also has point guard Ethan Duff returning creating a 1-2 punch that could have this team playing a day longer in March.

Preseason Rankings: No. 39 Santa Fe Demons

The 2015-2016 season has officially started and today we start our countdown of the top 50 programs in New Mexico Big School Division (6A-4A).

More: Preseason Rankings Home | Rankings 72-51 | Preseason Preview Page

The Santa Fe Demons are coming off a (11-16, 0-8) season, failing to reach the state tournament last season.

Overview: The Demons graduate a majority of their scoring, rebounding and playmaking from last season and will be looking to replace plenty of what they did last season. The Demons which play in a tough district will again be a team hoping to garner enough wins during the pre-district schedule. David Marquez (Junior) returns from last season, averaging 2.4 points per game and 1.2 rebounds per contest. The Demons on paper do not look the part that some of the teams they are above, also they graduate 6-players and will have an entire new starting line-up.

Last Season
Record: 11-16, 0-8
Home Record: 5-6
Away Record: 3-7
Post Season: Missed the post season.
Points per game: 52.25 (1411)
Points against: 57.74 (1559)

Realistic Prediction: Each season the Demons are talked about being a team that is ready to get over the hump and back into the playoffs. Well, at the end of each season it is the same story for this program as they are playing against some of the top teams in 6A basketball within their own district. This will likely be a season that they win less than 10-games with the amount of players that they have to replace. Likely another post season without the Demons.

District Champ: 5% (this high because they could play upset to the favorite.)
Playoff Team: 2%
Elite Eight: 1%
Final Four: 1%
Title Game: .01%

Returning Players: As mentioned above the Demons do not return any starters from last season and will be replacing a majority of what they did in 2014-2015. Along with Marquez the Demons return Larry Garcia who played in 23-games last season for the Demons.

Feature: NMPreps.com 25 Guards in New Mexico for 2015-2016

25 Guards in New Mexico for the 2015-2016 Season
By: Joshua J. Grine

This season could be one of the small school division guards. There will be several on our list, more than usual, from division (3A-1A) and we feel maybe that some of the best shooters and guards hail from the small towns across New Mexico.

Each season we at NMPreps.com we look to promote and highlight the top players in our state. We take a stab before the season to predict the top 25 guards in the state of New Mexico.

NATHAN BATES
Evangel Christian (Abq, NM) | Junior | 6'3"

It's not often that we get to talk about small school division players in our player rankings. We found it hard to not include Nathan Bates in our prediction of top guards leading into next season. Not to compare but the last big guard from 1A basketball turned into a division one player (Tyler Baker Temple Baptist; though he lacks the size of 6'6). Bates, a 6-foot, shooting guard/wing has the numbers that could only improve next season, averaged 21.4 points per game and 13.3 rebounds. When we saw him in the summer before his sophomore season he was knocking it down beyond the arch and had huge confidence in his game. Could improve on quickness to the basket but has some basketball knowledge. When given the opportunity we will display any top player regardless of class.

JACOB McNEELY
Volcano Vista (Abq, NM) | Senior | 6'1

Maybe a bit underrated at the moment but remember we are just listing the top 25 guards for the 2015-2016 season. Now to Jacob McNeely a wing player that likes to get to the basket. He penetrates well, uses he body against contact and scores at the basket. Has a decent and consistent 15-footer (a shot that lacks in high school) and will knock it down if left alone. McNeely, is athletic and reads the ball well on defense, a major type of player that only helps you on the court. He finds solid separation from the defender on offense either leading with a floater or nice pull up when needed. Overall a smart player that should only see his stock rise the more we see him. He has a long body and wing span that only helps when going against smaller wings/guards in New Mexico.

FRANCIS CASTILLO Y MULERT
Santa Fe Prep (Santa Fe, NM) | Senior | 6'1

When looking at guards you have to like what Castillo y Mulert brings to the table. He enters his fourth season on the varsity team as a three year starter a talented prospect from small school division basketball (3A-1A). Francis has put up solid numbers with 17.3 points per game, 3 assists and 3 rebounds a game as a junior. The thing we like about Castillo y Mulert is his ability to knock down the three point shot, penetrate to the basket with a nice 15 foot jumper and also his smarts with the ball. He also has proven to be able to run the point and as a 6-foot point guard with basketball smarts it only benefits him in small school division basketball. We expect huge things from him this coming season in a transition under a new head coach in Clyde Sanchez.

JUAN HURT
Rio Rancho HS (Rio Rancho, NM) | Junior | 5'10"

A trio of guards that will be mentioned on the list of top guards returning next season. Juan Hurt was playing solid this summer for the Rio Rancho Rams. When we saw him play he was running point and make top plays helping the team stay grounded. When he had to make a play to the basket he would penetrate and make smart decisions in the paint. He can knock down from behind the arch but not one of his strengths, even though he will knock it down when left alone. He averaged 10 points, 2 assists per game last season but those numbers should jump with more minutes and vital part of the mix.

CLAY PATTERSON
Rio Rancho HS (Rio Rancho, NM) | Junior | 5'10"

We mentioned that you would see three guards from the Rams 2015-2015 mentioned today, proving how dominate this team could be for the next two seasons'. Patterson was phenomenal this summer and didn't play like a player just off his sophomore campaign. He played behind his brother last season but this Patterson has the ability to duplicate the scoring and playmaking of his older brother who is now at Easter New Mexico University. Patterson is a slashing guard with the athleticism to stop and pop or finish at the basket. He has a quick first step off the dribble that got him into the paint automatically. Excited to see him grow this season and plays for a great offensive mind in Wally Salata who has been underrated as a coach to develop scoring guards.

JEREMY SNIDER
Rio Rancho HS (Rio Rancho, NM) | Junior | 6'2"

Snider was by far one of our favorite players last post season in a great Final Four showing against the eventual state champ Hobbs Eagles along with the summer. Snider is a wing that has a long wing span and is one of those players that knows how to use his body. By using his body we mean a long wing that penetrates well, can penetrate but makes decisions to play off the wing or hit the high post when needed. He sort of plays like a Dirk-type of player, tall wing that just does a lot of the little things well. I really like Snider and could be high on the NMPreps.com 2015-2016 Player Rankings. This Rio Rancho Rams team will be one of the most talented teams since their 2007 title team. The bright side is all three love to play defense as well in this uptempo philosophy.

DJ BUSTOS
West Las Vegas HS (Las Vegas, NM) | Junior | 6'3"

There is not much we can write that you haven't heard about yet on DJ Bustos. The 4A guard is a solid spot up shooter for the Dons. We would love to see him take over games more and penetrate but he has the size, body and basketball IQ that makes him successful. Yes, he is a great player and one to keep an eye on this season, we along with plenty of people like his game. Not often you come across players like Bustos. He averaged 20 points per game, 2 assists, and 2 rebounds last season.

MICHAEL CHAMBERS
Grants HS (Grants, NM) | Senior | 6'1"

Chambers helped lead the Magdalena program to it's first state championship and 31-0 season last season. Chambers has since transferred to Grants and will play for a talented Pirates team in 2015-2016. Chambers was great in the post season in 2015 and understands how to play the game. He averaged 15.4 points, 3.3 assists and 7 rebounds per contest last season.

JOE SATERFIELD
Onate HS (Las Cruces, NM) | Junior | 6'3"

It's said that Saterfield will suit up for the Onate Knights this season, transferring from 5A state champion Centennial High School. This will be the third school for the who played his freshman season at Tularosa High School. Saterfield, does not have stats submitted but a player with the athleticism to go for 20 (ppg) and 10 (rbpg). It's without question that he is talented and will play for a talented roster at Onate.

CESAR MOLINA
Centennial HS (Las Cruces, NM) | Senior | 5'11"

Molina without question is one of the best point guards in the state. Molina a top notch defender but super quick on offense. Molina, lead the Centennial Hawks to the 2015 State Championship and again will have them as favorites in the coming season. Molina, will have to pick up more responsibility this season with the departure of other players but he is the player with the ability to do so. Molina, has a nice jumper and can beat you off the dribble, his passing ability or hitting from outside.

15 OTHER GUARDS WE HAVE AN EYE ON

  • Matt Vail, Grants High School/2017: Talented junior that will play for one of the best teams in 5A basketball this season.
  • Gabe Bump, Albuquerque High School/2016: One of the better guards in the state the 6-foot-1 guard will look to leave his mark on the historic Bulldog history. Bump, has the task of improving not he successful junior campaign and shake off more defensives designed to limit his production.
  • Eric Coca, Capital High School/2016: You've heard the name, the senior guard averaged 14 points per game and will have the Jaguars in conversation of Final Four contenders. Coca will need to be consistent every night and live up to the preseason hype.
  • Marshall Moore, Rio Grande High School/2016: Another talented senior guard that should be among the best in the valley. Moore has talent and will need to become more of an on-the-court leader and have the killer instinct mentality limiting mistakes.
  • Bobby Tapia, Sandia High School/2017: No other guard truly boosted their stocked like Tapia did during the 2015 post season. Only a sophomore the guard hit big time shots and controlled the offense for a team that nearly upset the number 2 seed Cleveland in the Elite Eight.
  • Anthony Chavez, Valley High School/2018: Chavez is one of our favorite point guards in New Mexico, only a freshman last season, he was by far our top point guard listed going into the 2015-2016 season. For a young fella to have poise and ability to make big plays was huge. Valley continues as Guard High School, developing some of the metro areas top guards consistently. They play with some of most confidence out of some guards and make big time decisions with the ball.
  • Jordan Gonzales, Hobbs High School/2016: Another point guard on the list, a speedy guard that will be the main focus running the offense with the graduation of NMHU commit Trey Nelson gone. He averaged 7.3 points, 2.4 assists and 1.7 steals per contest.
  • John Paul Garcia, Tucumcari High School/2016: One of the best shooters in New Mexico this season comes from Small School Division basketball in 3A Tucumcari. Around 16 points per game, Garcia is automatic from the outside and a viable candidate (maybe the first) to be a finalist for the NMPreps.com Mr. Basketball award.
  • Jordan Leake, Hope Christian School/2016: One of the most athletic players in 4A along with the state of New Mexico. Leake was all over the court for the Huskies from boarding, to defense and making plays in the paint. More of a slasher and playmaker from the wing. Will be one of the top players regardless of classification.
  • Noah Waide, Goddard High School/2016: No other guard truly boosted their stock this summer like when we saw Waide. A spot up shooter for the Rockets who will be a surprise team in 2015-2016.
  • Hunter Wisneski, Los Lunas High School/2016: A 5-10 guard for the Tigers, Wisneski was the leading scorer' for a young Tigers squad last season at 9.3 points per game.
Four Others Worth The Mention

The Rise and Shine players who could be in store for break out years. We will evaluate this season but new names on the scene in 2015-2016.

Tucker Dobbs, Clovis High School/2016. A 6'2 Guard who averaged around 11 points per contest.

Bryce McAlister, Carlsbad High School/2017. A 6'6" Guard who we cant wait see develop into the player he could be.

Fabian Roybal, Highland High Schoo/2017. Last I seen Roybal was the summer before his freshman year of High School. Roybal, was our favorite then and will need to live up to the hype this season.

James Garcia, Pojoaque Valley/2017. From class 4A the 6'4 wing could be in store for a break out season as the go-to player for the Elks.

Preseason Rankings: No. 36 Gallup Bengals

The 2015-2016 season has officially started and today we start our countdown of the top 50 programs in New Mexico Big School Division (6A-4A).

More: Preseason Rankings Home | Rankings 72-51 | Preseason Preview Page

The Gallup Bengals have been one of the top programs in the state of New Mexico and finished 29-2, 8-0 last season falling in the state championship game.

Overview: A new era is here for the Gallup Bengals and a team that you might argue is a Top-25 team might take a small step back after replacing one of the most successful head coaches in program history. The Bengals return 8-players and top player Colton Lowley a 6-foot-2 guard who had one of the best state tournament showings. The Bengals will have players to replace, a head coach and could be a year that they have to take a back seat to a rising district.

Last Season
Record: 29-2, 8-0
Home Record: 11-0
Away Record: 12-1
Post Season: State Championship game, lost to Centennial (52-38)
Points per game: 67.9 (2107)
Points against: 54.2 (1682)

Realistic Prediction: I know several outlets have the Bengals as a top-5 team in their classification but replacing the coach who built the program is always a difficult task. The Bengals will likely rise into the Top-25 early but could run into trouble with Farmington improving and Piedra Vista also becoming one of the better 5A teams this season. Our prediction is a 15-19 win season, playoff birth but a first round exit might seem realistic this season.

District Champ: 80%
Playoff Team: 90%
Elite Eight: 70%
Final Four: 22%
Title Game: 5%

Returning Players: The Bengals graduate six players from their state runner up team and like the last time around it took a couple years before they return what those graduates had. Lowley has great size and will be a Top 100 player again and is the best part to start this season. They certainly return a lot from last season in eight players. The Bengals have some solid size in two 6'3 players in Joe Yazzie and Troy Etsitty.

Roster
Shawn Eskeets (2016)
Colton Lowley (2016)
Mathew Begay (2016)
Ronald Lee (2016)

Do any Schools charge for parking during playoffs?

I am going to Lake Ridge game tonight and the Mansfield High game tomorrow night and We will pay $5 for parking each night. I was talking to the Assistant AD today when I was buying tickets and he said with both nights they will have around 2500 cars come into parking area and maybe more. We will host several neutral site games during the playoff season and always charge $5. Some schools in DFW charge $10 during playoffs. All $$$ go to the ISD. Do any NM schools charge for parking during playoffs?

What Do You Want Covered In Week 12?

Calling for story ideas for week 12

My Sunday Recap
I started early at 4am getting the site organized, had breakfast with my father, brother, sister, wife, and our two kids, then went to Hoots indoor kids playroom aka thunderdome for a kids party, watched the 49ers beat Atlanta, and spent the evening thanking God for another day.

Have a great evening!!!

The St. Pius Sartans are coming off a (22-4, 6-0) season and a state tournament appearance as a 4-seed in the 2015 state tournament.

Overview: Head coach Damian Segura has been regarded as one of the best head coaches in 4A and for good reason. Each season, just when you think they will take a step back (as we are doing right now) they turn around and make it to an Elite Eight or Final Four. The Sartans graduate 8-players, returning 4 from last years team and could be a minor step back this season as they look for their next stud. Two players on our list are senior Emilio Arellano and junior Brennan Myers who will look to upset teams in 2015-2016.

Last Season
Record: 22-4, 6-0
Home Record: 10-1
Away Record: 7-1
Post Season: First Round, lost Artesia (42-40)
Points per game: 52.57 (1367)
Points against: 43.61 (1134)

Realistic Prediction: The Sartans truly never counted out but this team may take a step back especially as District favorites. The Sartans have won several district titles the last ten or so years and this could be one of those years it doesn't take home the blue. They play one of the tougher non-district schedule each year with 6A team, top 5A teams and the best 4A teams. They could flirt around 15 wins, still a playoff team and a district runner-up for our prediction. This might be a surprise at 41 to most (if not all) of our readers as they are a top-25 regular but we just don't know if they respond as well graduating that many. Emilio Arellano does shed light for this team but one player might not be enough. The Sartans are one of the most disciplined teams in running their system, don't allow points an impressive 43 a game and those are always good odds.

District Champ: 81% (this high because they could play upset to the favorite.)
Playoff Team: 97%
Elite Eight: 52%
Final Four: 12%
Title Game: 1%

Returning Players: The Sartans only return five players, as mentioned, the top player returning and Top-100 candidate in Emilio Arellano is the go-to player. Junior Brennan Myers will see his minutes drastically improve and will also see his responsibilities to becoming a regular number called on has to play to that standard. The depth or bench will be new with junior varsity players from 2014-2015 and could be an unknown thing for right now.

Preseason Rankings: No. 38 Alamogordo Tigers

The 2015-2016 season has officially started and today we start our countdown of the top 50 programs in New Mexico Big School Division (6A-4A).

Alamogordo went (10-18, 1-5) in 2014-2015 and enter the season with a new head coach in Tom Shields.

Overview: Over the summer the thread on the new head boys basketball coach was one of the most talked about threads this off-season. The Tigers enter the season graduating six players from the 2014-2015 team. The Tigers will have some talent returning in DK Garrett a junior that contributed last season and was a third option for the team. Another prospect to keep an eye on is Willie McClinton who as a sophomore last season also played big minutes as part of what the Tigers did. The Tigers struggled on the road and defensively last season, two areas that are tough playing in the southeastern district/region.

Last Season
Record: 10-18, 1-5
Home Record: 7-7
Away Record: 3-10
Post Season: Missed the Playoffs
Points per game: 50.35 (1410)
Points against: 61.28 (1716)

Realistic Prediction: The Tigers made their hire last season and you could look at it either way. Right now we could see the Tigers struggling to maintain in a tough 6A district and playing for a new head coach. Our prediction is 5-9 wins and missing the playoffs for a second season. The talent will be there but the question will be the direction this team heads under Tom Shields.

District Champ: 10%
Playoff Team: 15%
Elite Eight: 1.2%
Final Four: 1.1%
Title Game: 1%

Returning Players: The Tigers do have some young rising talent in the program and this could be the factor in the season for the Tigers. They welcome back two players who played huge roles for the Tigers last season in Garrett and McClinton. They have a roster filled with young talent and replacing 6-seniors shouldn't be too difficult even though Josey Mills will be a difficult body to replace.
