Boys 6A State Champions: Albuquerque Bulldogs

The 2015 Bulldog soccer team has officially made history, as they take home the first ever state title to Albuquerque High. Last year they came one goal short in the state final and the team knew they didn't want to experience that feeling again. The number 3 seed had an interesting road to the crown, which was made easier by the upset of the number 1 seed on the other side of the bracket. Three goals was all it took for the Bulldogs to walk away with the 6A trophy, as they beat Sandia, Rio Rancho and Atrisco 1-0 each. The Bulldogs finished with a record of 16-4-1.

Girls 6A State Champions: Cibola Cougars
The real Cinderella story of the year is the number 5 seeded Cibola Cougars. The Cougars fell one spot short of a first round bye, however, they made the most of their first game, beating Carlsbad 4-0. Next, the Cougars met up with district opponent, Rio Rancho, where they upset the Rams 1-0. Their upset streak continued as they defeated the clear favorite, La Cueva Bears, 2-1. Finally, the Cougars took hold of their last upset as they beat number 2 ranked Eldorado 2-1 to be crowned 6A champions. This is the Cibola Girls Soccer Program's first ever state title.

Boys 5A State Champions: Academy Chargers
It has been 14 years since the Academy Chargers won their last state championship in 2001, however, the Chargers are no stranger to the state title match. There have been 6 instances in the last 14 years that Academy made it to the final and fell short of a crown. This year's squad was determined to hold the trophy by the end of the final whistle, no matter what it took. The number 1 seed passed through the first two games fairly easily, topping Chaparral 6-1 and Farmington 3-0. All that was left between the Chargers and the blue trophy was a very hungry Los Alamos crew. The Chargers battled it out and defeated the Hilltoppers 2-0 to finish the season as champions of 5A.

Girls 5A State Champions: St. Pius Sartans
Eight. That's the number of state trophy's the St. Pius girls soccer program now has in their possession. The Sartans, who were expected to be the number 1 seed all season, dropped their final district match to rival Albuquerque Academy, putting their state soccer fate in the hands of a coin flip. They lost, and Academy was crowned district champs, earning the higher seed, however, Pius won when it mattered. They won 5-0 over Goddard in the quarterfinal and met up with Academy in the semis. The game was forced into penalty kicks, where keeper Tatiana Sarracino saved 3 pks to help her team move on. The final saw a Sartan squad earn a 1-0 victory over Los Alamos to claim the beloved 3-Peat.

Boys 4A State Champions: Bosque Bobcats
The Bosque Bobcats were on an 11 game win streak entering the state weekend, getting their last of only three losses on the season on September 10 to Los Lunas. The team received the well-deserved 1 seed and earned a first round bye in the state tournament. Their first two matchups were against district foes Rehoboth and Sandia Prep, which they squeezed by with 2-0 and 1-0 wins. Their final and easiest game was against the number 2 seed, Taos Tigers. The Bobcats handed the Tigers a 0-3 loss to earn the title of 4A State Champions. This would be the Bobcats third state title, their first since 2009.

Girls 4A State Champions: Hope Christian Huskies
Hope girls soccer has been a power house for the past few years, earning their third straight state title this weekend. The number 1 seed had an easy match in the first round as they topped Monte Del Sol 6-1. Their second two games were a bit trickier. They faced a young Sandia Prep squad in the semifinals, where it took an injured Sundevil goalkeeper and overtime for the Huskies to put the game in the bag. In the final, St. Mikes scored an own goal to hand the trophy to the Huskies. This marks the programs fifth state title.

NM HS Sports Story Cleveland Needs To Know

The Rio Rancho Ram cross country team was on their way to three consecutive state titles and had almost every conceivable advantage to do so. It was done deal. The two time defenders had a cozy home course arrangement from the NMAA. Home course is a monster deal in cross country. They had all the advantages of being at home where many of the schools had to travel great distances. The coronation was set. It was a done deal. A coach by the name of Bob Jackson made some amazing decisions in an effort to uncrown the Rams. The powers that be supported his plan despite some very difficult situations. Hobbs gave up it's one home meet of the year to travel instead to the Rio Rancho Jamboree meet at the same time. Hobbs needed more experience at altitude and hills since Hobbs has neither as the ABQ Journal pointed out. The Eagles needed to run that course to learn how to conquer it and set aside some of the ton of the advantages that Rio Rancho had. Hobbs did not win that meet and their superstar junior Andrew Bosquez did not win the individual title. What they did win at the Jamboree was a great deal of know how and therefore a great deal of fortitude and inspiration followed.

Hobbs was a very young team where six of the seven runners were freshmen, sophomores or juniors. Hobbs won the NM State Championship despite all of the odds and all of obstacles before them. Hobbs' Andrew Bosquez won the individual state championship also and it was not even close this time. Coach Jackson plan was expensive, time consuming, over 330 miles away and left Hobbs High defenseless in it's own meet the same day. Bosquez said in the News-Sun about that decision and plan... "It helped me learn the turns and learn when to push off, when to stay with the group and when to make a move. It helped a lot. I thank my coach for that." So, It all turned out that the Rams crowning was not a done deal. As for Rio Rancho's Cleveland high school in football...almost everybody truly believes that your coronation is also a done deal. My advice is to the Storm is be prepared for an unpredicted storm out of nowhere. Maybe internal, maybe external, maybe both. It is not a done deal.

First district title in school history was earned last night. I think the district gets in 2 with Capital but is anyone else thinking that Del Norte might get in as well? DN has a head to head win over Aztec and I think they were ranked higher on maxpreps going into last night...

Thoughts on the tournament . . .

The quarterfinals went mostly according to seed, but the semis provided some surprises. Only three No. 1 seeds, and two No. 2s, advanced to the finals. It was a great day for the Los Alamos teams; a terrible day for La Cueva.

No. 1 and No. 2 both go down in 6A boys. Albuquerque High over Rio Rancho is not a big surprise, but I did not think Atrisco Heritage could get by La Cueva, considering the Bears had beaten AHA 4-0 earlier in the year. Congrats to the Jags. Albuquerque High gets another shot at the title after its loss in the final last year.

An even bigger surprise was Cibola over La Cueva in 6A girls. The Bears weren't at their best in the quarters against Las Cruces and perhaps were looking ahead to a rematch with Eldorado.

Five years ago, the Los Alamos boys made a surprise run to the title, and this year they have yet to give up a goal in two tournament games. What do they have left in the tank after a 0-0 match with Roswell that was decided by shootout?

Same question for the St. Pius girls, who survived a shootout with rival Academy. But the Sartans should have too much firepower for Los Alamos.

The 2015-2016 season has officially started and today we start our countdown of the top 50 programs in New Mexico Big School Division (6A-4A).

More: Preseason Rankings Home | Rankings 72-51 | Preseason Preview Page

The Del Norte Knights are coming off one of it's most successful seasons under head coach Ryan Noce's tenure. The Knights went 17-9, 6-2 and made the State Tournament for the first time under Noce.

Overview: The Knights return nine players off the 2015 state tournament team and looking to continue the upward trend after several down years. Gone is top talent Daniel Delgado a 6-6 forward who battled injuries during his career. Returning is a trio of junior guards in Paul Perez (7.8), Dane Mora (9.4) and Alonso Caro (7.2) that were behind Delgado as scoring leaders. The Knights had one of their most successful runs but this could be one of their best teams in recent history with the talent returning. The question that most teams have is replacing that floor general and the Knights will have to do that.

Last Season
Record: 17-9, 6-2
Home Record: 8-4
Away Record: 5-1
Post Season: First Round, lost to Bernalillo (43-38)
Points per game: 56.4 (1468)
Points against: 54.4 (1416)

Realistic Prediction: It's hard to judge the teams who finally reached a destination like the state tournament and how those younger players will react the following season. Some programs find success but struggle to replace go-to players. Head coach Ryan Noce has done an outstanding job but the most we could see is a playoff birth for the Knights. They will battle for third with Bernalillo but the district only gets stronger with Capital and Espanola Valley. The Knights played well on the road last season which will be huge as this District has some tough places to win at and will only be tougher in 2016.

District Champ: 48.7%
Playoff Team: 80%: They can't fall to fourth this year, it might not be enough.
Elite Eight: 10%
Final Four: 5%
Title Game: 1%

Returning Players: The Knights return three out of four of their leading scorers as mention. Daniel Flores who contributed minutes as a freshman last season will be another player who will see his minutes improve. Flores had 3.9 ppg last season in 11 contests. The player that we have our eye on right now is Paul Perez who was mentioned above for his scoring (7.8 ppg) but he also contributed to 5.1 rebounds and 1.8 steals per contest.
