Wrestling Officials

There is a severe shortage of wrestling officials. If you know people who

  • Have a great attitude
  • Love wrestling know wrestling-
  • Have been involved, wrestler, coach, team
  • Are rules minded
  • Fit
  • Like to work, and have lots of confidence in themselves, we could use them. They are our future...
Please call NMAA and ask to get registered with the Greater Albuquerque Wrestling Officials Association and help build the group of officials, so that the future of wrestling is secured. We really want 18-35 year olds who can work all weekend, most week nights, the pay is decent.

The income is report-able as earned income, however the law changed a few years back to exclude the income from GROSS RECEIPTS if it is from NMAA Sanctioned events ONLY. Which is nice.

I try to visit here once a week, so if no response, please give me some time.

Wildest HS game I have ever watched

Last night 6-2 Mansfield High played 8-0 Cedar Hill. Cedar Hill is rated #12 in Nation and #3 in Texas in 6A. They have beaten 3 ranked teams already this year and are only giving up 11 pts per game. We beat them 46-43. In the game the following things happened.
First play from scrimmage Kennedy Brooks of Mansfield goes for TD
CH blocked 3 extra pts and returned on back for 2 pts
CH QB threw for 498 yards and 6 TDS
Kennedy Brooks ran for 208 yards and 4 TDS
CH had a 98 yd Pass TD called back for a pick
CH was on Mansfield 29 on last play of game and CH QB thew a pick six that was penalized for celebration and they marked the penalty at the spot of the foul and no pick six but Mansfield had the ball
Mansfield won its 1st District Title in 45 years
CH has 3 Senior Defensive players that have committed to D-1 Schools
Ch has the very best receiving corp I have ever watched and several are young and on watch lists
CH QB is being highly recruited and is only a JR
Mansfield's 2 highly rated JRS made the difference in the game

First Round Matchup Preview: 6A Boys

Each Day this week we will discuss a new classification and the matchups being played in the first round.

Boys 6A

8. Cibola hosts 9. Eldorado
In the beginning of the season, Eldorado defeated Cibola by 1 goal. However, the Cougars had more shots on goal, with 7, while the Eagles only had 1. When it comes to mutual opponents, Cibola defeated the La Cueva Bears, while Eldorado lost to them three times. Cibola defeated Albuquerque high, while Eldorado lost. Senior Tanner Hendrix leads the Eagles with 6 goals and 7 assists, while Gavin Sleeter has recorded 4 goals and 5 assists. Joshua Garcia has 7 goals and 7 assists for the Cougars and Isahia Juarez has 6 Goals and 4 assists. Cougar goalkeeper Enrico Sanchez only has 11 goals against him on his record and has 39 saves. This will be a very physical, emotional match, that can go either way.

5. Las Cruces hosts 12. Gadsden
District Foes, the Las Cruces Bulldawgs and the Gadsden Panthers will battle it out for the third time this evening. The Bulldawgs came up on top both times with a score of 2-1. Junior Luis Rivas has been leading the Panthers with 16 goals. Junior Sergio Olvera has assisted a goal 12 times so far this season, including once against Las Cruces. Senior Kiki Najera put himself on the radar early on in his career and he still continues to dominate. He has 20 goals and 7 assists, with 2 goals scored on the Panthers. Fellow senior Alexis Ruiz is the next highest scorer for the Bulldawgs with 7 goals and 10 assists. Junior Izak Cortez has 13 big assists, including once against Gadsden. The Bulldawgs look to have this game in the bag.

6. Sandia hosts 11. Clovis
232 miles is what separates the Sandia Matadors and the Clovis Wildcats. These two teams have yet to meet and only have seen 3 of the same opponents. Both hold a loss to Cibola, a win to Highland and Clovis beat Sandia Prep, while Sandia tied the Sundevils. Freshman Elias Ortega has started his high school career in Clovis off right. He’s recorded 15 goals and 7 assists, while the next highest scorer on the Wildcats has 6. Marco Fernandez leads the Matadors in scoring with 7 goals and 4 assists. The Matadors appear to have the upper hand on this matchup.

7. Cleveland hosts 10. Hobbs
The Hobbs Eagles will travel the most out of any team in the first round of the state tournament, as they treck 339 miles to Rio Rancho to take on the Cleveland Storm. The pair have not seen each other this year and both hold wins over Centennial and Onate. Cleveland is coming off 3 ties against 3 big teams, while the Eagles are on a 5 game winning streak, and have won 7 of their last 8. Senior D’Andre Finney has 16 goals on the season for the Eagles. Junior James Ulrich has knocked in 7 for the Storm with 6 assists. Senior Kyle Case adds 4 goals and 7 assists. The Storm have a tough visitor on their hand, as Hobbs isn’t afraid to fight.

UNM Tailgate Shmacked

I'm sure some of you have seen this video. It was posted and shared on social media from one of my former athletes who attends UNM. It is surly not affiliated with the university, but nonetheless some strong marketing for the university (good for future students and bad for parents). I bet enrollment will be up and retention down. Media like this makes it difficult for us as teachers and especially coaches to positively influence our kids to stay away from alcohol. But hey, I went to NMSU and tailgating was all that we were good at... and B-Ball. What do you think? Is this good or bad for UNM?

Josh Foley out of Surgery

Josh just got out of surgery. First let me say thank you to Dr. Treme from UNM Sports Medicine he did the surgery himself and what a remarkable and caring person, thank you Doc and the rest of the folks here at UNM Sports Medicine.

Josh has a plate with a bunch of screws in it. Dr. Treme said everything went better then expected and the healing process was looking really good for such a short amount of time. He said off the foot for 2 weeks then a boot. Will start working mobility then and rehab as soon as possible. He thinks he will be ready for Track, maybe not the beginning but should be able to run a significant amount this year. Thanks again for all the kind words, texts, emails and notes we have received from all over NM and Coaches. Thanks to Coach Howes and the rest of Ram Nation for all their support and prayers.
