The following is the NMPreps.com 2023 Preseason New Mexico High School football rankings. All 92-teams that play 11-man football are ranked before the 2023 season. #nmpreps
1. Cleveland Storm
(6A Football) The reigning 6A state champions look to continue their dominance as they return a core of their prospects. That list includes the number one ranked player in New Mexico high school football in
Stratton Shufelt the 2024 LB has racked up a 11 offers. Chuka Tutman (2024) and Isaac Medrano (2024) will play alongside Shufelt creating perhaps one of the best defensive trios in the state. Now to the offense, the Storm have some questions surrounding the loss of one of the best offense of the '22 season. They will have a new quarterback, RB, and receiver this fall. Karter Weddle (2024/WR) and Harris Mbueha (2024/RB) will move up the depth chart and look to carry the Storm offense forward.
The Storm have big holes to fill this season and it could create some offensive growing pains. The defense is top level and it'll need to anchor the team this season. The program has developed into a power and they'll be at the top to start the 2023 season.
2. La Cueva Bears
(6A Football) Momentum is high at La Cueva after winning 11-games and playing in the state championship in '22. The Bears have their eyes set on a return to the final game but this time finishing it off. Before they do, they will need to make several replacements for All-New Mexico level players. They key to this engine is in the form of 2025 ATH Cameron Dyer. The athletic prospect did a little of everything last season for the Bears from passing, rushing, and receiving. He went for over 300 yards in each category and finished with 13 total touchdowns (4 passing, 4 rushing, and 5 receiving). Two receivers to know this season - Jackson Hix (2024) and Cruz Markham (2024). Hix a next level talent finished with 1,054 yards and 14 touchdowns last season.
The real story for the Bears will be with a loaded defense. Mason Posa (2025), Nick Mertz (2025), and Shawn Barela (2024). Posa is a highly recruited prospect that finished with 77 total tackles and a team high 9 sacks last season.
We like the Bears a lot heading into the 2023 season especially with the stout defense that they return. Dyer is a special player and will shine this season and Hix returning after the season he had should bring plenty of excitement. Right now, the Bears are in position to get to Thanksgiving week.
3. Centennial Hawks
(6A Football): The Centennial Hawks finished 9-2 overall (5-0 district) last season, falling in the 6A state semifinals. The Hawks offense averaged 39 points per game (430 total) last season. To start the Hawks have big shoes to fill with the graduation of Mikah Gutierrez who had 190 carries for 1,733 rushing yards. That focus turns to Daniel Hernandez (2024/QB) who passed for 1,577 yards and 23 touchdowns. Hernandez, a mobile QB, also rushed for another 808 yards and 13 rushing touchdowns. Top target and rising junior Jordan Lucas returns at receiver, he finished with 402 yards and 7 touchdowns in '22.
The Hawks defense allowed 20 points per game last season (224 total points). Despite graduating a solid core of players the Hawks welcome back key players this season. John Sierra (LB/2024), David Beasley (2024/CB), and Zaiden Davis (2025) each contributed to the success last season.
The Hawks have a quality group returning this season to keep them in the top four conversation. Head coach Aaron Ocampo wins and despite needing to fill some holes the Hawks reload.
4. Rio Rancho Rams
(6A Football): The pieces are in place for the Rams to challenge the top five teams again this season. After finishing 7-5 overall (2-2 district) and a playoff win the Rams are looking to make a leap forward. Returning star quarterback JJ Arellano (2025) is going to be key to the Rams success. As a sophomore the top-10 ranked QB passed for 1,096 yards and 15 touchdowns; he rushed for another 610 yards and 10 touchdowns. The senior trio of Elijah Garabedian, Ryan Brown, and Andrew Gustafson on defense creates a solid defense that looks to improve from last season.
The Rams have some dudes returning and they are a solid pick to reach the semifinals this fall. Finding a top target at receiver along with protecting the QB will be the key to the Rams success this fall.
5. Volcano Vista Hawks
(6A Football): The Volcano Vista Hawks return after winning 10-games and reaching the 6A semifinals in 2022. The Hawks finished 10-3 overall and 3-1 in district play. Again, the Hawks are tasked with finding a new quarterback with the loss of Paskett-Bell from last season. One thing that has stayed consistent with the Hawks is they tend to reload the position. A huge part of the offense could run through 2024 running back Alijah Gonzales who returns after rushing for nearly 700 yards and 12 touchdowns last season. Seniors Hunter Martinez and Kian Vander Wilt will anchor the defense for the Hawks this season, the pair and 183 combined total tackles last season.
Volcano Vista has voids to fill but they have continued to be a top-5 football program and the same should be for this season. The opener vs Las Cruces will share more on what to expect this season from the Hawks.
6. Artesia Bulldogs
(5A Football): The state championship returned to Artesia in 2022 and the Bulldogs are looking to make it two in a row. The Bulldogs posted a 11-2 record and went 3-0 on their way to a state championship win over Piedra Vista in Farmington. New Mexico Mr. Football candidate Nye Estrada (2024) is a big reason why the Bulldogs are favored to make another run at the title game. Estrada passed for 3,425 yards and 42 touchdowns as a junior. Peyton Greathouse (2024/WR) and Jesse Leroch (2024/RB) on offense create a next level trio on offense with Estrada. Leroch rushed for 629 yards and 10 touchdowns last season while Greathouse hauled in over 1300 yards receiving and 12 touchdowns. Jesse Armendariz (2024), Josiah Rodriguez (2024), and Diego Wesson (2024) return on defense.
The Bulldogs have a core of quality players returning and with Jeremy Maupin at the helm the Bulldogs are in a good hands for years to come.
7. Roswell Coyotes
(5A Football): The Coyotes took a step forward last fall, upping their win total from five in '21 to nine in '22. The Coyotes finished 9-3 overall and reached the 5A semifinals, falling to Piedra Vista. With a healthy amount of key returners the Coyotes are looking at making a run as a 5A title contender. On offense Bryce Sanchez (2024/RB) and Malchi Mitchell (2024/TE) provide the squad with preseason All-New Mexico candidates. Another player that could shine more in his senior season is 2024 quarterback Manny Fuentes. The defense features several starters including on of the top CB in 5A football in 2024 Wesley Gallegos.
They have a solid core returning and a potential showdown with Artesia in the final game is sure to bring out the best of the SE corner.
8. Hobbs Eagles
(6A Football) Repeating last year's 9-2 record and being runner-up in district will be a challenge, but with Head Coach Ken Stevens leading the way, the Eagles have a good shot at being in the thick of things again. The high powered offense (44.1 points per game) will return without the likes of 2023 graduates Omar Argott (QB), Diego Baeza (RB), and Kevin Trevino (WR) a very under appreciated offensive trio from last season.
Key returners looking to fill the void will be 2024 RB Saul Armendariz who rushed 255 yards and 4 touchdowns on limited action. The key player returning that ranks in our must-see players is Jeremiah Jaquez who had 672 receiving yards and 9 touchdowns last season, he now moves into the top receiver spot.
On the defensive side, Zaeden McPherson (113 total tackles) and Cameron Hernandez (78 total tackles) form a strong duo, but the Eagles will miss the presence of Kenyon Singleton, the total tackles leader (137) last season. Hernandez brings stability after leading the team in sacks last season (5).
Despite losing some key players, the Eagles have a positive outlook under coach Stevens and should have a solid season with their established program. The Eagles will have a handful of new faces but a 7+ win total is likely as they are now an established program.
9. West Mesa Mustangs
(6A Football) Landrick Brody's program exceeded preseason expectations in 2022 finishing 5-5 overall (2-2 district) and narrowly missing the state playoffs. With top-ranked quarterback Elijah Brody (2024) returning this season, scoring points won't be a problem for West Mesa.
The offense averaged 40 points per game and Brody accounted for 44 total touchdowns (29 passing/15 rushing). The stat line was impressive for Brody with over 3,000 yards on offense, 2,454 of those throwing the ball and another 765 rushing yards. The bad news? The Mustangs will need to fill the void left by receiving targets, but players Marcus Sharp (2024) and Richard Martinez (2024) are ready to step up.
The defense will need to improvements to reach the state playoffs, but with players Vences Caraveo (2024), Fabian Sandoval (2024), and Marcus Sharp (2024) leading the way, they have a shot. Sharp, a two-way player, could be on the shortlist of top newcomers to watch.
In conclusion, the Mustangs have only been preseason ranked inside the top-10 once and that was also the last time they reached state (2017). As mentioned they will need to improve on defense but Brody's skills on offense make him a difference maker.
10. Atrisco Heritage Jaguars
(6A Football): For the first time in NMPreps history the Jaguars will start the season ranked in the top-10 (all classifications). Atrisco Heritage returns after a 5-6 season, reaching the state playoffs.
Head coach Howard Knezevich's Jaguars roster will feature one of the most talented groups. Running back Marquise Renfro (2024), quarterback Dean Marquez (2024), and receiver Latavious Morris (2025) provide the Jaguars offense with next level talent. Renfro finished the season with over 400 yards rushing along with over 500 yards receiving and a total of 15 touchdowns for the Jaguars.
The improvements will need to be on the defensive side of the ball and with a defense that graduated most of their starters it could be the difference maker. The Jaguars dropped the final 5-games of the season after a 5-1 start. They were outscored 253 to 61 in those final five games.
The hill this fall is district play and the Jaguars have an opportunity to break a 9-game district losing streak (0-9 over 2022 and 2021). The Jaguars have some hype and the Jaguars will have all eyes on them this fall. The opener with Sandia will be a strong indication of what is to be expected from the roster this season.
11. Los Lunas Tigers
(6A Football): Last season, the Tigers had a pretty good run, finishing 7-5 overall and winning a playoff game. That was their first season in 6A, so it was a great achievement. However, Greg Henington's team will begin in some unfamiliar territory this season. They will be facing some challenges, with quarterback Paul Cieremans and top rushers from last season gone. As a result, the offense might struggle early on.
ATH's Fabian Trujillo (2024), and Ethan Baca (2024) will be the preseason names to become familiar with to guide the offense. Trujillo led the team in receiving yards with 749-yards but also played QB and RB in limited reps. We will be curious to who gets the call at quarterback this fall.
On the other hand, the Tigers defense has been blessed with talent over the last five-six years, with D-1 talent. Although they graduated plenty of starters from last season, they have some experience returning in Jason Ussery and Gage Marquez. Marquez was second on the team in total tackles with 76 and led the team in sacks with 4.
Overall, it's going to be an interesting season for the Tigers. We won't get a great feel for how they will do until week two against Alamogordo and week three against Farmington. The district is favorable for the Tigers despite going through a transition of talent.
12. Farmington Scorpions
(6A Football) The first year back in the largest enrollment classification (6A) the Scorpions exceeded early expectations finishing 6-6 overall and winning a state playoff game. Despite being slow out the gate, 1-3 record, they would rebound winning four of the final six games.
Plenty to love about the Scorpions this fall as they return quarterback Trel Griego (2024). Griego finished with 2887 passing yards and 31 passing touchdowns. He also rushed for another 526 yards and 10 touchdowns. At receiver Michael Beck (2025) returns after bringing in 1,005 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns as a sophomore. Cayden Haliburton (2025) and Ethan Tsosie (2024) will take on bigger roles this season and could have a promising year.
On defense the Scorpions return stud senior Ian Fishburn who finished the 2022 season with 103 total tackles and 4 sacks. Isaac Foutz (2024) led the team in total tackles and will anchor the defense with Fishburn. Several starters returning to the defense this season that includes Taushaun King (2025) and Santiago Gonzales (2026).
The Scorpions have key players returning and much to like heading into the season and could be underrated at No. 12. A strong start could guide them into a solid playoff spot. The opener vs Piedra Vista could be a quick introduction to just how good the Scorpions could be this season.
13. Las Cruces Bulldawgs
(6A Football) The Bulldawgs struggled their way to a 2-7 overall season and missing the state playoffs. The schedule remains in tact this season with the addition of El Paso-Americas (Texas) to fill out a full 10-games this fall. The youthful Bulldawgs will still feature several underclassmen but many of them have earned experience last season.
On offense sophomore RB Daniel Amaro will look to build off a successful freshman season. Gunnar Guardiola gained key experience as a freshman starting quarterback last fall. On defense the Bulldawgs and head coach Mark Lopez will lean on Coen Morales, DB, this Fall. The senior leads an experience group along with defenders Matt Lashley and Julian Lopez.
The Bulldawgs could still be a year away from making a deep playoff run but they are making positive strides forward. They are on the radar to get back into the playoff picture.
14.Alamogordo Tigers
(6A Football) Alamogordo is coming off one of their best seasons' since the 2016 season when they finished 7-5. The Tigers finished the regular season 5-5 and reached the state playoffs falling in the first round, 21-7, to Rio Rancho.
Looking ahead the Tigers have a task at replacing the RB duo from last season in Damon Mayberry and Ryan Stovall, the pair rushed for 12 TDs and over 1,100 yards combined. 2024 RB Anthony Audette has experience and returns along with promising junior Dylan Hergenreder. At quarterback junior Elijah Montoya returns after starting as a junior totaling 868 passing yards and 6 passing TDs.
The defense takes a hit, the graduated a large class and will have a handful of first time starters. Mason Pittman and D'Andre Martin are key returning players on the defense for the Tigers and will have to guide a rather inexperienced unit.
In conclusion the Tigers and head coach AJ Cisco continue to build a solid program. Their non-district schedule plays a pivotal role again this season, they went 3-2 last season, matching that or better will be the difference in a playoff bid.
15. Sandia Matadors
(6A Football) The Matadors had a promising start to the 2022 season but fell short of the playoffs. After a 3-2 start to the season the Matadors dropped four straight before beating Cibola on the final night to end 4-6 overall.
With star running back Malachi Thymes gone, a Matadors team that's in rebuild mode could be a sleeper to make the playoffs. On offense it will be new names but some returning starters to provide immediate help is Rafael Molina (2024/OL), Grayson Frederich (2024/WR), and Jacob Adcox (2024/WR).
On defense, Thomas Adams (2025/LB), Hunter Maldonado (2024/CB), and Juanito Cruz (2024/CB) will guide the defense. All three are expected to play a bigger role this off-season.
The Matadors played well and narrowly missed the playoffs last season, you look back to a 14-12 loss to Piedra Vista and 42-39 (OT) loss to Eldorado being the difference from playing in November and having a .500 win season. They are considered in a rebuild but the head coach Chad Adcox is sure to have them ready to upset teams.
16. Carlsbad Cavemen
(6A Football) The Cavemen are considered one of the fringe programs. On the fringe of winning some big games and on the fringe of a true breakout. The Cavemen are on the verge of a rebuild as they hired their third head coach in as many years. Cale Sanders takes over the program and will look to guide a team that finished 5-6 last season and played in the first round (Lost 34-33 to Farmington).
The bad news for the offense will be the need to replace star running back Eli Asay who rushed for 1,548 yards and 16 touchdowns for the Cavemen last season. Dual-threat QB Dane Naylor has also graduated leaving a void under center. Ulysses Mendoza, 2024 RB, will move into the starting role, the senior rushed for 684 yards and 9 TDs as a junior behind Asay. Juniors Brock Beaty and Kason Perez are a pair of ATH that should shine as they move into bigger roles this season.
A major concern for the Cavemen this fall will be on defense, with many of the starters from the 2023 team graduating in May the Cavemen will look to fill those holes. Diego Ramirez, 2025, returns will the most experience but will be surrounded by inexperience on the varsity level.
The Cavemen have question marks entering the season and expectations are low, we should know more by the opening night with the Eddy County rivalry against Artesia.
17. Eldorado Eagles
(6A Football) The Eagles were under construction last fall finishing with 2-wins (2-8 overall, 0-3 district) and missing the state playoffs. Experience on offense provides some excitement for head coach Charlie Dotson.
Senior quarterback Brandon Olivas passed for 1,647 yards and 20 touchdowns and provides stability under center entering the season. His top target Josiah Mitchell, a senior receiver, returns after posting 624 receiving yards and 7 touchdowns last season. Other key receiving contributors Jesse Wells and Joshua Jackson will also be names to reckon with this fall for the Eagles offense. When looking back at successful Eagles seasons a well-rounded back was a feature and junior RB JohnPaul Ludi provides the experience leading in rushing yards last season with 424 and 2 rushing touchdowns.
The defense will need to fill several holes entering this season. Quinn Teupell (2024) and Kevin Cumo (2025) give the Eagles some experience on what was a senior loaded roster in 2022.
The Eagles will be improved this fall. The offense played well, even against top teams, but it will be the defense that will need to improve if they have hopes of returning to the playoffs.
18. Clovis Wildcats
(6A Football): The 'Cats are looking to improve this season under the guidance of coach Andrew McCraw. Last year was a bit of a rough start for the team, with a 0-6 record before they eventually pulled together and won three games in a row. They would end the season 3-7 overall.
If the 'Cats are going to improve their record this season, their defense will need to be on point. In the first six games of last year, they suffered two shutouts and allowed 255 points, which is an average of 42.5 points per game. Although the defense graduated many players, they are looking to Josh Mondragon (2024) to lead the way. As a junior, he led the team in tackles with 61 and also had three sacks, which ranked first on the team.
On the offensive side of the ball, the 'Cats are looking to running back Kash Roberts to continue his development. Last season, the junior rushed for 735 yards and six touchdowns.
Despite a tough schedule, which includes games against Hobbs, Canyon TX, and Randall TX, the 'Cats are hoping to battle for a playoff spot in the 12-10 range.
19 Valley Vikings
(5A Football): Valley Head Coach Billy Cobos' program has gained momentum after finishing the 2022 season with an 8-4 record, a state playoff win over Miyamura (30-6), and a 2-1 district finish. Although they lost top-rated running back Chris Jojola from the 2023 class, the Vikings have a lot of excitement surrounding junior quarterback Julian Butkivich, who passed for 1,330 yards and 7 touchdowns as a sophomore last fall. The Vikings scored an average of 30 points per game last season, including five of their final wins going for over 40 points, to end the season 5-2. Tazhe Wilson (2024) will return this fall after serving as the backup to Jojola in 2022. Class of 2024 receivers Chris Lopez-Burton, Ezekiel Ramos, and Natvaious Stallworth provide many targets for Butkivich. The trio totaled 750 yards and 6 touchdowns last fall. Julian Vigil (2024), Juan Vigil (2025), and Christian Powell (2025), along with Lopez-Burton, provide plenty of experience on defense for the Vikings. Alec Giron (2024) is another DL to watch this fall.
Despite being outscored 166 to 14 in three games (Artesia, Piedra Vista, and Cibola), the Vikings have a lot to look forward to this season. The team has a wealth of experience, and the culture is in place for another successful season. They are likely to enter the season as the district champs and could be poised for a deeper playoff run.
20. Piedra Vista Panthers
(5A Football): Jared Howell's squad is facing a big challenge this fall as they must replace key players from the talented Class of 2023, who led them to an impressive 11-win season and a 5A state championship appearance last year. The Panthers will need to find new starters to fill the shoes of quarterback Logan Howell and running backs Jacob Ramsted and Zach Mora-Dotson, who played crucial roles for the team over three years. The defense also lost important players, including Dax Vigil and Jacob Schrueder from the secondary, along with LB Xavier Lefebre. The Panthers' offense was highly successful last season, scoring 443 points (34 ppg) and winning by an average of 21.6 points. The defense had three shutout wins last season, only allowing 186 points on the season (14.3 per game).
There is some good news for the Panthers, as Dylan McCoy (2024) returns at running back this season after getting some touches behind the loaded 2023 class. Hunter Schwartz (2024) will be another senior to watch for the Panthers this season. He is expected to be a top-rated WR in the 5A class this season. Diego Hernandez (2024) also returns to the OL, which will need to replace four of its five starters this fall.
Despite the loss of key players, the Panthers are well-coached and have the potential to remain a top team in their district. While this could be a major rebuild, the team has likely done enough to develop new players to fill the vacancies. The district still runs through the Panthers, so they could enter the post-season on a high note.
21. Cibola Cougars
(6A Football): After a promising 6-0 start to the 2023 season the Cougars dropped five straight to end 6-5 (0-4 in district). Second year head coach Chris Howe starts the rebuilding process after mass exit from the 2023 class. The Cougars offense produced big numbers early on averaging over 35-points per game but when October hit that number dropped to 12.4 points per game. A major reason for that drop was the loss of star quarterback Aden Chavez who went out with an injury missing the final six games of the season. With Chavez now gone, they will need to find replacements for him with limited experience returning. The same replacements are needed for the top three rushers, and the top three leading receivers including Braden Castillo who has over 1,000 yards receiving and 8 TDs. If 2024 WR Marcus Wilson returns to the Cougars, he provides next level talent and possibly the best option to compete this season. The 6-foot-4 WR finished with 356 yards and 8 TDs in 2022 for the Cougars. The Cougars have promising playings on defense, Marcos Morales (2024) and Nicolas Ramirez (2024) two of the leaders in total tackles for the Cougars in 2022. Morales a top defensive talent also finished the season with 5 sacks on the season, including his 69 (TT). The final note is that Cibola is a difficult job, much of the talent either attends neighboring school school/districts Volcano Vista or Rio Rancho, the district is difficult with reigning state champion Cleveland, and now a massive rebuild. The schedule doesn't do them any favors this season and it could be a long season but Chris Howe will get them to battle.
22. Organ Mountain Knights
(6A Football): Organ Mountain football program has a new head coach in Kenny Sanchez, and the excitement is palpable. Sanchez won the National Coach of the Year award during his 11-year stint at Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nevada). Now, he takes over a Knights program that finished last season with a 3-7 overall record (0-5 district) and is currently on a five-game losing streak. Quarterback Logan Tarango returns to lead the offense, but he'll have a new supporting cast as his receiving core graduated. Tarango likes to go with the deep ball but with new targets could struggle early. There's some experience on the offensive line, with Vincent Ruiz returning, but a new line could provide issues early on this season. The defense will undergo a major overhaul. The Knights lost top talent Fabian Lozoya and have a lot of holes to fill. Overall, the Knights could struggle this season. With a new head coach and the loss of many starters from 2022, there's not much experience on the second unit. It could be a short stay in the top-25 this season as the cabinet was left empty.
23. Albuquerque Bulldogs
(6A Football): Its a new era in Bulldog City after Desmond Anaya was promoted to head coach replacing long-time leader Tim Johnson. Anaya takes over the program that won 3-games last season including the final two games of the season. The Bulldogs offense averaged 22.1 points per game last season and showed positive signs. They could have easily been 6-4 or 5-5 despite two close losses to West Mesa (27-21 OT) and a last second field goal to Clovis (31-28). The offense returns quarterback Frank Hren (2024) a senior-to-be that threw for nearly 812-yards and 7-touchdowns. Alberto Landeros (2026), Jonathan Chavez (2025), and Abran Vigil (2025) provide experience in the backfield after getting a bulk of the carries last season. Chavez a threat to break off a long run on any carry and doesn't shy away from contact. On 41 carries Chavez rushed for 330 yards for the Bulldogs last season and will only see his production improve last season. Diego Viscarra (2024) and Abran Vigil (2025) guide a defense that will be in search of some new starters. Viscarra led the way in total tackles for the Bulldogs finishing the season with 76. Much like the offense, despite only 3-wins, the defense held its own against some some playoff teams and only had one shutout loss (Los Lunas, 27-0). The final thoughts on the Bulldogs is that they will be going through a transition this year, with a first-time head coach, and an inexperienced defense, but the hire was a slam-dunk, and the prospects on offense are looking good.
24. Goddard Rockets
(5A Football): The Goddard Rockets had high hopes for their 2022 season after going 5-2 in pre-district play and winning their first district game against Mayfield. However, things took a turn for the worse when they lost their final three games of the season, including a quarterfinals upset loss to Deming. Despite the disappointing end to the season, the Rockets are eager to bounce back in 2023. As they look ahead to the new season, the Rockets understand that they would have to replace many of their top players from the 2022 season. But they also had some returning talent, including RB Jonathan Silva (2024), who rushed for nearly 300 yards against Mayfield and was now on the shortlist of top 5A running backs to watch this season. The senior-to-be is expected to be a bright spot for the Rockets' offense, which also returns QB Dominic Ramirez and OL Aidan Martin returning. Martin was the lone piece from a stout offensive line in 2022, and the Rockets know that their defense would need some work as well. They lost nearly all of their starters, but they have some upcoming players who could provide immediate help, including Ernesto Garcia (2025), Josiah Castillo (2026), and Beau Roach (2025). Despite the question marks on both sides of the ball, the Rockets were confident that their history and tradition could keep them in the top six of the class. With RB Silva leading the way on offense, they are ready to take on whatever challenges came their way in the upcoming season.
25. Mayfield Trojans
(5A Football) Gary Bradley, a seasoned coach with successful stints at Farmington High School and Carlsbad High School, is taking over as head coach of the Trojans football program, succeeding his brother Michael Bradley who retired at the end of the 2022 season. Although the Trojans finished last season with a 5-7 overall record (0-3 in district), they have all-state linebacker Bobby Herrera returning to guide the defense. Herrera is considered one of the top linebackers in 5A football. On offense, the Trojans will have several new players in new roles, including junior TE Brian Coyle who will lead the spark under the new head coach. Justin Madrid (2025/Running Back) and Luke Linnan (2025/Running Back) provide some experience in the backfield for what could be a run-heavy offense this coming season. The offensive line could be a strong unit with Xander Castillo (2024), Gary Madrid (2024), and Frank Sanchez (2024) guiding the way. The Trojans have a difficult task playing in arguably the toughest district in the state, regardless of classification. However, they made a solid hire, have nice pieces returning, and could be a dark horse to reach the semifinals this season.
