By Kyle Henderson of NMPreps.com

Rankings are based off our preseason top 100 rankings

48. Lordsburg
1692533.jpg

Pictured is Lordsburg QB Johnny Plowman who threw for 2,204-yards and 33 touchdowns in 2014
This year's Lordsburg team is going to be one of the better team's they've had in the last 10-15 years, yes they are going to be that good and could be even better in 2016. Last year with a handful of talented sophomores Lordsburg went 10-2 before losing to Estancia 53-14 in the playoffs. They return Junior Quarterback Johnny Plowman who threw for 2,204-yards and 33 touchdowns, return Raymond Saucedo who ran for 959-yards as a sophomore, return Jacob Esquivel who caught for 895-yards and 17 touchdowns as a sophomore.

65. Tularosa
The Wildcats won 6 games during the 2014 season under Bryan Jones. Their season ended in the quarterfinals losing to rival Lordsburg 35-18. The Wildcats return quarterback Dakota Varbel and junior to be Cameron Sheppard. Tularosa just might surprise you this year.

85. Capitan
The Tigers had another down season in 2014 winning just 3 games. Not sure what the reason is, but the Tigers have been rotating coaches almost at will year after year. James Weems is the Head Coach in 2015, watch for Luke Walker who will likely start at quarterback.

87. Mesilla Valley
The Son Blazers missed the 2014 playoffs going 2-8 on the season and losing their last 8 game of the season.

Pictured is 226 pound FB/LB/DE Caleb Ortiz who ran for over 770-yards as a junior
Is it possible for Estancia to be even better entering the 2015 season? Last year the Bears finished out the season 11-3 beating Clayton 14-6 to win the Class 3A State Title. Their offense racked up 517 points and allowed just 148. Returning is FB/DE/LB Caleb Ortiz at 6-foot-3, 226 pounds, 253 pound linemen Gabe Garcia, 268 pound linemen Michael Garcia, and Adam Lujan who ran for over 500-yards as a junior.

66. Laguna Acoma
Over the last two years under Head Coach Roger Cordova, the Hawks have won 17 games. A big part of their success over the years has come from having Running David McGee leading the way, he finally graduated, so did play maker Ryan Arkie. Who will step up in Laguna in 2015?

Albuquerque Bulldog Overview
The Albuquerque Bulldogs ended a 43-game losing streak during the 2014 season under then first year Head Coach Curtis Flakes. The Bulldogs went on to win 4 games in 2014 and finished district with a record of 3-2, really the Bulldogs were one game away being playoff eligible. That fact in itself is pretty much unbelievable considering Albuquerque had not won since August 28th of 2010. Under Flakes a former Defensive Back at the University of New Mexico and former assistant at Manzano, the practice was crisp, disciplined, and organized. “The first thing we did during the semester after the football season was hit the books. We didn’t lift weights, run plays during our football period, we (the coaches) sat with the kids and used football period as study hour to bring up G.P.A’s. We wanted to make sure their grades were in line before we took the next step in our program,” Said Flakes on Tuesday Morning. The Bulldogs return 18 starters from last season, a lot of these current varsity players have seen time since their sophomore season being pulled up do to lack of numbers. Fast forward to July of 2015, the Bulldogs had well over 60 players out at summer work outs. “There has been a significant amount of change in these young men, now they are very much accountable and up for the challenge to take care of their responsibilities. We are still building a foundation, it’s an every day commitment, it’s a process, it’s going to take some time, but as from a coaching perspective and from the players we are all excited about it,” Commented Flakes.

Offensive Returning Starters
1701698.jpg

Pictured is Bulldog Quarterback Riley Padilla who threw for 1,438-yards as a junior
The Bulldogs currently have a quarterback battle taking place between seniors Riley Padilla and Narke Vatoseow. Padilla had a monster year for the Bulldogs as a junior throwing for 1,438-yards and 12 touchdowns and also rushing for 536-yards. Coach Flakes tells us that both Padilla and Vatoseow bring different abilities to the table and each have looked very good this summer. Padilla is listed at 5-foot-10 and 135 pounds, Vatoseow is 6-foot-2 and 190 pounds. At running back the Bulldogs return Deyvn Lopez and Victor Hernandez who rushed for just under 300-yards as a junior. At receiver Jonathan Martinez is their go-to-guy hauling in 388-yards and 5 touchdowns in 2014. Up front, Albuquerque returns everyone, their big three include: Kyle Ruth at 250 pounds, Sam Lechuga at 230 pounds, and Eric Gonzales at 240 pounds.

Defensive Returning Starters
1701699.jpg

Pictured is 6-foot-4, 290 pound Raymond Cole who recorded 35 tackles in 2014
As mentioned the Bulldogs return 18 total starters and the defense starts with 6-foot-4, 290 pound Raymond Cole who is getting interest from New Mexico and New Mexico State. Cole had 35 tackles last year and two sacks and according to the Albuquerque Coaching Staff, Cole has looked the D-1 part over the summer time. Also up front is David Marquez-Hernandez who had 37 tackles last year and while he’s a junior, he’s already been a three year starter for the Bulldogs. Linebackers include Brandon Lara, Alex Coronado, and Adrian Lovato, all who started in 2014. In the secondary watch for senior standout Jonathan Martinez who recorded two interceptions and according to Flakes is one of the best defensive backs in the Metro Area, also watch for Narke Vatoseow to get reps both ways.

Henderson's Take On The Bulldogs
1701700.jpg

Pictured is Jonathan Martinez who is the team's top defensive back
Albuquerque is in good hands with Coach Curtis Flakes. Being around the Bulldogs this morning was refreshing honestly. They are on the come up and while they still have a ways to go, they are headed the right direction, it nice to see a coach take over, stick it out, and build on what he has. Looking at their 2015 schedule they have a shot to win 4-5 games once again. Last year they went 3-2 in district play, so let's say they are able to edge out teams like Rio Grande and Highland again, I could see them taking Del Norte down to the wire, playing Valencia close or even winning that game, and who knows with Miyamura, remember Miyamura won 10 games during the 2014 season. In all I don't know if they are going to make the playoffs or not, but they are going to improve and build on what happen in 2014. Snapping that 43 game losing streak is something I'll never forget.

Valley Viking Overview

Entering his 4th year as Valley Head Football Coach Enrico Marcelli has a win/loss record of 23-10. After a slow start in 2014 going 0-4, the Vikings won 4 out of their last 5-games on the season and were one-game away from reaching the playoffs. For a school that has just over 1,100 students, the participation numbers for football are extremely high, in-fact Coach Marcelli told us that Valley has over 130 kids out in the entire program in grades 9-12. This season Valley returns 14 starters into the 2015 season, the headline in the spring/early summer has been the recruiting coverage regarding 6-foot-6, 250 pound returning defensive linemen Teton Saltes who has offers from CAL, Iowa State, New Mexico , Oregon, San Diego State, Texas Tech, Washington, and Washington State. While Saltes is a Blue Chip Senior, Valley only has a total of 12 seniors on the roster, one of their smallest groups in years. “Our senior class this year is really small this year, luckily they are all pretty good. We got guys like Teton Saltes, Noah Santistevan, Michael Barboa, and Elijah Naranjo who are all going to make plays. Last year was up and down a little bit, but I think we’ve learned from that, we lacked a little bit of senior leadership, over the summer we have worked on that,” Said Enrico Marcelli.

6-foot-6, 250 Pound Teton Saltes Holds 8 Offers
Login to view embedded media Last year as a junior Saltes played just 7-games, but his highlight film caught fire in the recruiting world during the spring and big time schools like Oregon, Washington, and CAL all offered, as mentioned all together he holds 8-offers and plans to watch Utah vs. Oregon this fall. “He is 6-foot-6, 250 and he is fast, he runs a 4.8 40-time. He is very explosive and has some things you just can’t teach. The colleges love him, we are looking forward to getting our hands on him, he has just played 7-games of high school football, we are looking for him to anchor one side completely for us this year,” said Marcelli on his prized defensive linemen.

Offensive Returners
1701898.jpg

Pictured is Valley 6-foot-2, 205 pound Tight End Noah Santistevan who will be a three year starter, also a standout basketball player
Isaiah Chavez threw for over 1,000-yards last year as just a sophomore starting more than 5-games. Speaking with Marcelli Chavez is one of the better passes he has had since taking over Valley and it helps that Chavez can move around the pocket as well when needed. At running back you have 5-foot-11, 195 pound Michael Barboa (270 power clean) who is due for a monster year. He’s the type of back that wants contact and once he gets going he’s going to cause some major collisions. Barboa is also their starting inside backer on defense. Elijah Naranjo returns at receiver and had a big junior year in 2014 hauling in over 800-yards and watch for Leroy Howard who has looked solid as a sophomore this summer. Valley also has a very good tight end in 6-foot-2, 205 pound Noah Santistevan who will be a three year starter and has excellent hands. Up front Valley is led by Darek Jenkins at 6-foot-4, 265 pounds and 6-foot-2, 295 pound David Montano who won the top linemen award at the UNM Camp.

Defensive Returners
1701899.jpg

Pictured is 5-foot-10, 195 pound RB/LB Michael Barboa, also a standout baseball player
As mentioned Valley is anchored by 6-foot-6, 250 pound Teton Saltes who all eyes will be on this year now that he is a top prospect in the West. Also up front is Roy Claudio at defensive end who will be a junior and Brandon Atencio at 220 pounds who will play some nose. All four linebackers return for Valley, including their leading tackler last year as just a sophomore in Keno Garcia. As mentioned Michael Barboa also returns at backer and should be their big hitter and watch for Nick Herrera who is a transfer from Sandia. In the secondary Daryl Aims and Tyson Mosqueda will lead the unit, an area Marcelli told us has to get better entering the season.

Henderson’s Take On The 2015 Valley Vikings
1701900.jpg

Pictured is Junior Quarterback Isaiah Chavez who threw for 1,000-yards in 6 games last year
It was odd watching Valley start off the 2014 season 0-4. Since the take over of Enrico Marcelli as Head Coach Valley has been a week in and week out tough opponent capable of playing with just about anyone. We saw that Valley we’re used to late in the season with wins against Aztec, West Mesa, Albuquerque, and Rio Grande winning by large margins. Marcelli hit the nail on the head: they don’t have a lot of seniors, but the seniors they have are very good. I personally want to see Teton play myself and the though of him going up against Grant Hermanns out of Rio Rancho in week 1 is going to be like watching college football. I don’t think a lot of people know about Noah Sanstistevan or Michael Barboa, those two could be on my preseason all-state teams, they are that good. Throw in linemen David Manto and Derek Jenkins, Valley’s top level guys are as good as anyone else’s. They got a tough front end schedule starting with Rio Rancho, Eldorado, Cibola, Sandia, and La Cueva. Two out of those four games could go either way, so they could again be 0-4 or be 202 entering the midseason point. I like being at Valley’s practice because Marcelli would be a fun coach to play for, he’s young, energetic, and the kids like to work on the North Valley. Circle that game against Cibola and their district rivalry games against West Mesa and Atrisco Heritage that will determine their playoff fate.

Cup Finals Weekend + USMNT Friendly

This weekend is set up to have three good games to watch.

FRIDAY - USMNT v Guatemala
A friendly tune up before the Gold Cup starts. The US has a heavy MLS roster for the tournament, a big change from their rosters vs Holland and Germany. Guatemala isnt a push over and will be a good test tonight.

SATURDAY: Copa America Final - Chile v Argentina
Chile has had an amazing run through the tournament. They have also been gifted some very generous calls all tournament. They did have to go through some tough teams, Brazil and Colombia for example. Argentina started out slow but then had a 6 goal romp in the semi-final. Messi destroyed Paraguay and didnt even have to score. Chile has the home field advantage but will they be able to capitalize?

SUNDAY: WWC Final - Japan v USA
This game is gonna just shatter TV ratings records for FOX. A great story in the rematch. The US looking to cap off a great tournament, with the best defensive performance in years. Julie Johnston has got to be the new star of the team. She came on and has had a huge impact on every game. But Japan isnt to be overlooked, they are the defending champs and know what it takes to beat the US.

I think I have enough beverages in the fridge to last all three games!
