New Mexico High School Football Preseason Team Rankings for 2022

NMPreps will take a look at each team in New Mexico high school football leading up to the 2022 season. #nmpreps

(20) Capital Jaguars

Town: Santa Fe, NM
2021 Record: 4-6 overall, 1-3 district
2021 Playoffs: Missed
Head Coach: Joaquin Garcia
NMPreps 6A Preseason Rank: #20 (of 21)
NMPreps Top-40 Preseason Rank: Unranked (of 121)

Scoop: It's the Capital Jaguars, so you know the uphill battle that they will face this coming season. The school known more for basketball has experienced some success in football but still battled to get in the top-8 of 5A football. Now, the school must play in the same classification with powers like Cleveland, Rio Rancho, and Las Cruces which sit at the top of the football world in New Mexico high school football. Second-year head coach Joaquin 'Wax' Garcia will have one of the toughest challenges as he looks to rebuild, yes a school like Capital is essentially rebuilding it's just how they operate.

Players: Julian Munoz (2023) returns under center for the Jaguars after passing for 908-yards and 15-touchdowns in seven games for the Jaguars. The quarterback also led the team in rushing yards with 573-yards and 8-touchdowns. Avelino Trujillo (2023) and Javier Martinez (2023) both led the receiving core, Martinez with 463-yards and 5-touchdowns was the go-to target for Munoz.

Early Prediction: 2-8 overall, 0-4 district. Pending the non-district slate of games the Jaguars could be fighting for one to three wins this season.

Double Dribble: Review the Week

Double Dribble: Review the Week

NMPreps takes a second look at what happened this week in New Mexico high school basketball for the week of December 27th - 30th.

Team of the Week: Hobbs
. The Eagles went 3-0 to win the Hobbs Holiday Tournament. The wins include Piedra Vista (89-34), Montwood, TX (75-45), and Cleveland (77-53). The Cleveland win is perhaps the big one as the Storm are the defending state champs and currently ranked No. 2 in New Mexico.

Stock Riser: Belen. The Eagles have currently won four in a row including three this week as the took home the Stu Clark Championship in Las Vegas, New Mexico. The games took place at New Mexico Highlands University. The wins over Bernalillo (48-45 OT), West Las Vegas (79-61), and Taos (57-51).

Ramping Up: Rio Rancho. The Rams went 3-0 this week taking home their tournament with wins over Santa Fe (48-42), Espanola Valley (62-57), and St. Pius X (49-36). Those three wins are impressive to end 2021 as they are all three playoff projected teams. Keep an eye on Keagan Caton (2022) - length, nice 15-footer, and makes the Rams go.
