Lobos-Aggies

Lobos 50, Aggies 40.

Neither one of these teams is a good team. UNM has its best QB in years and a good receiver set but the defense is very shaky, especially the secondary. Penalties are a problem. They will win a few more games and they got a lucky break in the conference schedule - no UNLV or Boise St.

Who knows what will happen with the Aggies. With Kill gone, they look like the Aggies of old. They certainly don’t look like the bowl teams of the last few years. More like a 3 or 4 win team.

Feature Grine's Playoff Picture in 5A Volleyball

Grine's Playoff Picture in 5A Volleyball

As we look ahead to the 2024 State Tournament in Rio Rancho, it’s time to start categorizing teams and assessing what to watch as November approaches. Here’s how the playoff picture is shaping up in 5A volleyball.

The Favorite: Las Cruces Bulldawgs (11-0)

It's impossible to dispute the Bulldawgs as the heavy favorites to claim another state title in 2024. They remain undefeated after a month and a half of play, dropping only three sets out of 32. With a dominant track record, Las Cruces enters October as the clear team to beat.

The Contenders: Cleveland Storm (10-2), La Cueva Bears (6-2)

Cleveland and La Cueva are both legitimate threats to challenge Las Cruces in the championship match at the Rio Rancho Events Center. La Cueva’s only losses are to Las Cruces and Cleveland, though they also earned a win over Cleveland earlier in the season. Meanwhile, Cleveland is riding an impressive eight-game win streak, with their only losses coming to Las Cruces and La Cueva, which is a similar resume to La Cueva.

Dark Horse Teams: Santa Fe Demons (9-1), Los Lunas Tigers (6-4), Roswell Coyotes (12-1), Centennial Hawks (6-4)

These teams rank in the 4-7 range and could be poised to make a playoff run. Santa Fe has been particularly impressive with a 9-1 record, while Los Lunas has played strong throughout the season. Roswell is riding a 12-game win streak, and Centennial is quietly climbing the ranks, with standout players Anniston Lustig and Maddison Bekken leading the charge as district play begins.

Sleeper Teams: Rio Rancho Rams (7-4), Volcano Vista Hawks (7-4), Albuquerque Bulldogs (7-5)

These teams, currently ranked 8-10, are all sitting with seven wins apiece. Their playoff fates hinge on how they perform in district play, which could significantly impact their rankings and playoff seedings. Rio Rancho and Volcano Vista, in particular, are aiming to make it three teams from District 1 in the tournament.

Final Two: Hobbs Eagles (5-7), Eldorado Eagles (8-4)

District 4’s second playoff spot is still in question. Hobbs could secure a berth but must convincingly outperform Carlsbad and Clovis. Eldorado, meanwhile, needs to hold its position above Sandia to become the potential third team representing District 2 in the bracket.

Feature Week 6 Friday Night Preview & Predictions

Week 6 Friday Night Preview & Predictions

WHAT TO WATCH

The 5A 1-Seed on the Line: No. 10 Artesia (3-2) at No. 7 Lovington (5-0), 7pm
Line:
Lovington, -1.5.
Prediction: Lovington 43, Artesia 42.

This is the game of the night, featuring two of the state's top offenses squaring off for what could be a decisive showdown in the race for the 1-seed in 5A football. Lovington, currently ranked No. 1, and Artesia, sitting at No. 3, are both prime contenders for the state title. Both teams have high-octane offenses, with Lovington averaging 37.8 ppg and Artesia 48.8 ppg. Quarterbacks Izac Cazares (Artesia) and Matthew Prudencio (Lovington) will be key in this shootout, and the winner could avoid facing fellow powerhouse Roswell until the state championship.

Ready to Challenge: No. 22 Organ Mountain (2-3) vs No. 5 Las Cruces (3-2), 7pm
Line:
Las Cruces, -16.5.
Prediction: Las Cruces 36, Organ Mountain 21.

The Organ Mountain Knights are one of this season's feel-good stories, turning around from a winless 2023 campaign to a two-game win streak. However, they face their toughest challenge yet against Las Cruces, a top-5 team coming off a 44-14 district-opening win over Hobbs. Las Cruces RB Daniel Amaro is the main threat, but Knights' freshman sensation Romeo Jones, with 450 rushing yards and 6 touchdowns, could make this a game. The Bulldogs remain favorites, but Organ Mountain has a chance to prove they're no longer a pushover.

OTHER GAMES TO WATCH

Belen (2-2) at Miyamura (2-3), 7pm
Line:
Belen, -18.
Prediction: Belen 28, Miyamura 12.

Belen is the favorite to win District 1-5A, and a win here would extend their streak to three games. While the Eagles should handle Miyamura comfortably, the Patriots will put up a fight in Gallup.

Goddard (2-3) at Gadsden (4-1), 7pm
Line:
Gadsden, -3.5.
Prediction: Gadsden 23, Goddard 20.

Gadsden has emerged as a pleasant surprise this season, and a win over Goddard would be a signature victory for the program, keeping them in contention for a top seed in 5A. Goddard will push, but Gadsden has the edge.

Texico (4-0) at West Las Vegas (3-2), 7pm
Line:
Texico, -10.5.
Prediction: Texico 26, West Las Vegas 18.

This 2A vs. 3A matchup offers a quality test for Texico, the No. 1 ranked team in 2A football. West Las Vegas presents a challenge, and the Dons will want to prove they can compete with one of the best in the state, regardless of classification.

Valencia (4-1) at Portales (2-3), 7pm
Line:
Valencia, -6.5.
Prediction: Valencia 23, Portales 15.

Portales, once a state favorite, has been hampered by injuries, while Valencia has steadily improved. This game could solidify Valencia as a playoff contender capable of winning in the postseason, while Portales seeks to bounce back.

New Mexico High School Football Week 6 Preview: 8-Man and 6-Man

As Week 6 of the New Mexico high school football season kicks off, excitement builds for the unique 6-Man and 8-Man football games. In this feature, we will break down the upcoming matchups, highlighting key players, team stats, and predictions for what could be pivotal games this weekend. Expect a mix of high-scoring affairs and defensive battles as teams jockey for playoff positioning and continue to shape their seasons.

6-MAN FOOTBALL

Carrizozo Grizzlies (0-4) at Mountainair Mustangs (1-2)

Friday, 7 p.m.

The Carrizozo Grizzlies are still in search of their first win this season after a rough start. Through four games, they’ve only managed to score 32 points while conceding a staggering 204. Mountainair, on the other hand, is coming off a morale-boosting 52-12 victory over Da Vinci, Texas. Despite having allowed 138 points over three games, the Mustangs are averaging a respectable 32.3 points per game and will look to ride the momentum from last week. Carrizozo will need a breakthrough on both sides of the ball to pull off a win, but Mountainair appears to have the upper hand.

Prediction: Mountainair 46, Carrizozo 12.

Elida Tigers (4-1) at Whiteface TX Antelopes (4-0)

Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Elida has been impressive so far, averaging 49.2 points per game. However, they’ll face their toughest challenge yet against an undefeated Whiteface team. The Antelopes have been on fire, putting up a staggering 61.5 points per game and winning convincingly at home (2-0). With Elida being 1-1 on the road, this game could be a defining moment for the Tigers. Expect a competitive shootout between these offensive powerhouses, but Whiteface’s home dominance might prove too much for Elida to overcome.

Prediction: Whiteface TX 43, Elida 33.

Grady Bronchos (4-1) at New Mexico School for the Deaf Roadrunners (2-2)

Tuesday, 3 p.m.

The Grady Bronchos, sitting at 4-1, enter this matchup as a 20-point favorite, but they can’t afford to underestimate NMSD. Both teasm have similar offensive outputs, averaging around 43 points per game. NMSD’s standout athlete, Alex Gonzalez-Lopez, will look to give the Roadrunners a chance to upset the visiting Bronchos. Grady's balanced attack, however, should carry them through in the end.

Prediction: Grady 34, NMSD 16.

Logan Longhorns (5-0) at Floyd Broncos (1-3)

Friday, 6 p.m.

Logan has been dominant, remaining undefeated while averaging an explosive 49.8 points per game. Floyd has struggled offensively, managing just 13.3 points per game. Logan’s trio of stars—Haden Judd (over 100 rushing yards per game), Aydin Kotara (150 yards passing per game), and Payson Nials (16.5 tackles per game)—will likely prove too much for Floyd to handle. This could be a lopsided affair.

Prediction: Logan 54, Floyd 6.

Magdalena Steers (1-2) at Animas Panthers (1-3)

Friday, 6 p.m.

Neither team has been prolific on offense, with Magdalena averaging 21 points per game and Animas slightly behind at 13.8. Magdalena’s Joseph Zamora, a dual-threat quarterback, will need to lead a balanced attack, while Matthew Lopez (14 tackles per game) anchors their defense. Animas will be eager to protect their home turf, but this game could come down to which defense can hold out longer.

Prediction: Magdalena 20, Animas 18.

Roy/Mosquero Blue (3-1) at Dora Coyotes (2-1)

Friday, 7 p.m.

This game features two solid squads. Roy/Mosquero is undefeated on the road and is averaging 5222 points per game, thanks to their high-octane offense. Dora, strong at home, will look to control the pace behind their standout running back Aaron Combs and quarterback Carson Kircher. Defensively, the COyotes are anchored by Gunnar Tipton and Ashton Davis, who will be tasked with slowing down the Blue’s prolific attack. This could be one of the tightest and most exciting games of the week.

Prediction: Roy/Mosquero 38, Dora 28.

8-MAN FOOTBALL

Alamo Navajo Cougars (0-5) at Dulce Hawks (0-4)

Friday, 7 p.m.

Both teams enter this matchup still in search of their first win. Alamo Navajo has struggled mightily on both sides of the ball, scoring just 28 points all season while giving up a whopping 250. Dulce hasn’t fared much better, scoring 32 points while conceding 145. The bright spot for the Hawks came last week when they managed to score 20 points in a loss, their highest output of the season. Alamo Navajo, meanwhile, has been shut out in its last three games, losing each by mercy rule. Junior Scotty Guerro will be pivotal for Alamo Navajo as they try to secure their first victory.

Prediction: Alamo Navajo 22, Dulce 20.

Melrose Buffaloes (5-0) at Mesilla Valley Christian SonBlazers (5-0)

Friday, 7 p.m.

This is the game of the week and possibly the entire season for 8-Man football. Both teams come into this showdown undefeated and averaging over 50 points per game, promising a high-octane offensive shootout in Las Cruces. Melrose, led by standout Josiah Roybal, has been unstoppable. Roybal is averaging over 230 total yards per game (177 passing), and his supporting cast—Brayden Eldridge and Jaxon Odom—has helped make Melrose a juggernaut.

For Mesilla Valley Christian, Davis Coyle leads the charge as a formidable pocket passer. His primary targets, Mark Dwyer, Jeremiah Sullivan, and Payton Tharp, will look to match Melrose blow for blow. Both teams are explosive, but Melrose’s experience and depth might give them the edge in this monumental clash.

Prediction: Melrose 62, Mesilla Valley 54.

Menaul Panthers (3-1) at Fort Sumner Foxes (3-0)

Friday, 6 p.m.

Menaul travels from Albuquerque to take on a powerhouse in Fort Sumner. The Panthers will rely on key players like Carlos Cummins and Diego Carrillo on offense, with Nick Brock standing out on defense. Fort Sumner, however, has been nothing short of dominant this season. They are averaging an astonishing 56 points per game while allowing just 12 points in total over three games.

Fort Sumner’s rising star, sophomore quarterback Jordan Holland, has emerged as a game-changer and will look to continue his stellar play. Given Fort Sumner’s strong defense and dynamic offense, this could be a tough outing for Menaul.

Prediction: Fort Sumner 49, Menaul 8.

Mescalero Apache Chiefs (2-2) at Gateway Christian Warriors (3-1)

Friday, 7 p.m.

Mescalero Apache will face a formidable foe in Gateway Christian, one of the most consistent programs in 8-Man football. The Chiefs, led by Landyn Hiles, have been competitive but will need a near-perfect performance to keep pace with the Warriors. Gateway Christian has been an offensive powerhouse, scoring 217 points and allowing just 70 through four games. Senior leader Ethaniel Wigley has been a force for Gateway Christian, and his play will again be crucial as they aim to notch another win at home.

Prediction: Gateway Christian 50, Mescalero Apache 16.

Week 5 of New Mexico high school football showcased impressive performances from players across the state, with standout efforts on both sides of the ball. From quarterbacks airing it out to defensive players shutting down offenses, here are the top performers of the week, broken down by position.

Top Offensive Performers

Quarterbacks:
  1. Blake Spencer (Senior, Bloomfield)
Spencer was a dominant force in Bloomfield’s 53-0 victory over Aztec, needing just 7 completions to rack up 200 passing yards and 5 touchdowns. He also added 28 rushing yards and another touchdown, making him a standout on both the ground and through the air.
  2. Jordan Hatch (Junior, Cleveland)
Hatch put on a show in Cleveland’s 49-27 win over Pebble Hills, Texas. He threw for 276 passing yards and 3 touchdowns, guiding his team to a decisive victory. Hatch’s poise and accuracy helped the Storm keep rolling.
  3. Matthew Prudencio (Senior, Lovington)
Prudencio passed for 235 yards and 4 touchdowns in a commanding 46-6 win over Goddard. His efficiency and leadership were key in securing the victory.
  4. Ilijah Hansen (Senior, Volcano Vista)
Hansen led the Volcano Vista offense to a 28-8 win over Eldorado, passing for 156 yards and 2 touchdowns. His ability to make plays through the air continues to be a strong asset for his team.
  5. Jose Jaramillo (Junior, Valley)
Jaramillo helped Valley to a gritty 13-6 win over Miyamura, throwing for 179 yards and 1 touchdown while also rushing for 25 yards and another score. His dual-threat ability was crucial in the victory.
  6. James Vautier (Senior, Manzano)
Vautier was electric in Manzano’s 40-20 win over Portales, passing for 144 yards and 3 touchdowns while adding 61 rushing yards and 2 more touchdowns. His ability to move the ball both on the ground and through the air kept the Portales defense guessing all night.
  7. Isaiah Ocampo (Senior, Socorro)
Ocampo's all-around performance in Socorro’s win over Hot Springs was one for the books. He threw for 270 yards and 3 touchdowns, while also rushing for 124 yards and adding another score, leading Socorro's offense with confidence.

Running Backs:
  1. Isaiah Yannis (Senior, Cleveland)
Yannis was a force in Cleveland’s victory, rushing for 149 yards and 2 touchdowns. His ability to break tackles and dominate the line of scrimmage was crucial in helping the Storm overpower Pebble Hills.
  2. Juan Munoz (Senior, Cleveland)
Munoz added to Cleveland’s ground dominance with 126 rushing yards and a touchdown. The combination of Yannis and Munoz proved too much for Pebble Hills to handle.
  3. Aiden Erickson (Junior, Manzano)
Erickson contributed 59 rushing yards and a touchdown in Manzano’s win over Portales, adding a reliable ground game to complement Vautier’s passing.
  4. Zachary Perez (Sophomore, Valley)
Perez rushed for 55 yards in Valley’s tight win over Miyamura, providing key carries to control the game’s tempo.
  5. Zach Toledo (Senior, Valley)

Week 6 New Mexico High School Football Rankings: Movers and Shakers

The Week 6 rankings bring significant movement, with teams rising and falling after pivotal matchups. Let’s dive into the movers and shakers of the week.

Dropping Out of the Top-10:

West Mesa Mustangs (2-2), after starting the season strong, suffered a significant slide from No. 9 to No. 13. Their 54-21 loss to Los Lunas (3-1) dropped the Mustangs in the polls this week. The Tigers, however, made the most of their opportunity, jumping from No. 13 to No. 12 with the statement win.

Albuquerque High Bulldogs (4-1) traded spots with Atrisco Heritage Jaguars (1-3) after a tight 14-12 victory. This win elevates the Bulldogs to No. 18, while the Jaguars slide to No. 19. Meanwhile, Organ Mountain (2-3) notched an 18-12 win over Alamogordo (1-4), pushing the Knights from No. 31 to No. 22, earning their first top-25 ranking this season. Gadsden (No. 20), Mayfield (No. 21), and Alamogordo (No. 23) saw shuffling in the 20s, with Piedra Vista slipping to No. 24 after being idle. Sandia Matadors fell to No. 25 with the shake up and Cibola Cougars dropped out of the top-25, landing at No. 26 despite a narrow win over Clovis.

Big Winners:

Manzano Monarchs and Chaparral Lobos had standout performances this week. Manzano scored a major win over Portales, 40-20, marking their biggest victory in five years and making a strong case for a district title. Chaparral, a team that began the season on a 32-game losing streak, earned their second win of the season with a 44-20 triumph over Albuquerque Academy. The win was historic, placing the Lobos at 2-3 overall and 1-0 in district play. Conversely, Albuquerque Academy experienced the biggest fall of the season, dropping from No. 49 to No. 62.

Rise & Grine: Publisher’s Week Six Questions

Well, the headline is new. I almost went with Grinding Grine, but that just didn’t do it for me. Today, we dive into our Week Six questions surrounding New Mexico high school football. Which teams are playoff-bound? Who is the real deal, and who’s already looking ahead to next season?

Has the Bubble Popped?

Thursday night at Wilson Stadium, the 19th-ranked Atrisco Heritage Jaguars face off against the 25th-ranked Sandia Matadors. The spotlight, however, is on Sandia. Once a preseason top-10 team, the Matadors have struggled to live up to expectations. Their season-opening loss to Piedra Vista set the tone, and while they’ve taken care of some other bubble teams, their playoff hopes remain on shaky ground.

Both teams find themselves in a must-win situation, especially with Atrisco Heritage also teetering on the edge after a devastating 14-12 loss to Albuquerque last week. A win tonight could breathe life back into their playoff hopes, but a loss would likely spell the end for one—or both—teams. The question is, has the bubble already popped, or is there still time for a turnaround?

Who is the Real Contender in District 2-4A?

What we thought we knew in the preseason has completely shifted by Week 6. No one, not a single soul in this great state, would have predicted that Chaparral and Manzano would be 1-0 after the first week of district play. Chaparral upset Albuquerque Academy, and Manzano stunned Portales. Now, we head into another intriguing matchup on Thursday.

St. Pius X, a preseason favorite to contend for the district championship, faces off against Silver, a team sitting at 2-3 overall and 0-1 in district. The question is: will the Sartans fall victim to the upset trend that has already hit other top teams, or can they establish themselves as the real deal? Injuries have slowed St. Pius X, but a well-timed bye week may have given them the recovery they needed to refocus on the season ahead.

Valencia, meanwhile, lurks as another contender, boasting a 4-1 record overall and 1-0 in district play. With so many surprises so far, will the real favorite in District 2-4A please stand up?

Who Will Reign in Southeastern New Mexico: Cats or Dogs?

Oh boy, we’ve got a good one brewing in southeastern New Mexico! It’s going to be raining cats and dogs. It’s blue vs. orange. The scoreboard operator better be ready for a long night, and the stat guy better have his pencil sharpened. This is perhaps the game of the week—maybe even the game of the season.

The 10th-ranked Artesia Bulldogs (3-2 overall) are making the trip to Lovington to take on the undefeated 7th-ranked Wildcats (5-0 overall). Lovington has been doubted before, picked against more than once this season—but is this the final regular-season question they have to answer? Both teams boast high-powered offenses, and we’re in for an offensive showdown.

Lovington is averaging over 370 total yards per game—259 passing and 113 rushing. Artesia, much like Lovington, is known for their aerial assault, racking up 435 total yards per game, with 314 of those through the air. With both teams firing on all cylinders offensively, this could turn into the longest game of the season, with the clock stopping on nearly every play.

The quarterback battle is one to watch, with Izac Cazares leading the way for Artesia and Matthew Prudencio for Lovington. Both are first-year starters for their storied programs, and both are thriving. Could this game be a preview of the QB of the Year conversation in 5A football?

One thing’s for sure—southeastern New Mexico is in for a treat.

Grine's Trio of Must-Watch Matchups Tonight

No. 13 Rio Grande (5-6) vs. No. 14 Volcano Vista (5-4), 6pm
:
This rematch between Rio Grande and Volcano Vista is shaping up to be a fierce battle. The Ravens upset the Hawks just over a week ago in the APS Metro Championship, taking a nail-biting 5th set 16-14 to advance to the final. Playing on their home court this time, Rio Grande will look to replicate that magic. Bella Shae, Sophia Lopez, and Crystal Gutierrez will lead the charge for the Ravens. Meanwhile, the Hawks, driven by Skylar Schwartz's impressive 110 kills this season, will be seeking redemption. Ava Wrolstad, Breanna Maestas, and Adriana Zavala will need to step up if Volcano Vista hopes to flip the script.

No. 9 St. Michael's (7-3) at No. 7 Santa Fe (8-1), 6:30pm:
The longstanding rivalry between St. Michael’s and Santa Fe has been one-sided since 2019, with the Horsemen dominating the Demons. But this year could finally be Santa Fe’s time. Off to a blistering 8-1 start, the Demons are looking like legitimate contenders. Aleena Hubbard, Makayla Gonzales, Nicole Sallee, and Lillianna Ocampo have been outstanding, and they'll be hungry to break their losing streak against St. Michael’s. However, the Horsemen, despite a tough loss to 4th ranked St. Pius X last night, remain a powerhouse in 3A volleyball. Marissa Sandoval-Moya, one of the state’s top players, alongside Maya Pino and Victoria Victorino, will be formidable opponents as they aim for a three-peat.

No. 12 Albuquerque Academy (7-2) at No. 10 Rio Rancho (6-2), 6:30pm:
This first meeting between Albuquerque Academy and Rio Rancho promises to be a high-caliber matchup. The Rams, led by Jacey Mader, Sanieda Trejo, Alyssa Dominiguez, and defensive anchor Reece Cave, who boasts 126 digs and 137 receptions this season, are looking to solidify their top-10 status. Albuquerque Academy’s rising stars, freshman Kiara Brown and sophomore Sadie Jorgensen, will be pivotal in countering Rio Rancho's firepower. This match has all the ingredients for a back-and-forth thriller.

Note: NMPreps rankings are from Sept 19 and subject to change before this evenings games.
