New Guidelines and Toolkit Aug 24

Every single sport indoor and outdoor, vaccinated or not will be mask wearing.

Back to the red, orange, yellow and green map.

Right now all in red outside of four counties

If move to orange or better vaccinated will not have to wear mask in low risk sports only. High risked (football, volleyball) are still mask wearing.

Shema97 masks are not allowed.
Thanks

Band - is high risk. Have to use the covers etc from last year.

Red/Orange - all students/staff/spectators must all wear a mask for indoor & outdoor sports.

No capacity limits for spectators.

Coach Griego

Great, great man. I will miss him and he is definitely on my mind today.

As an opposing coach for one year I was surprised that even right before we played each other he talked strategy with me and helped me grow as a coach. I have a lot of respect for him. The words his daughter mentioned in the AJ today. "He was a perfect dad." hit hard.

RIP Coach Griego

NO. 29 AZTEC TIGERS
2021 Record: 0-8 overall, 0-6 in district
Returning Players: Lane Morgan (2022), Isaiah Parra (2022), Aiden Lee (2022), and Skyler Bouren (2022)
Notes: The Tigers struggled during head coach Ryan Dee's first season at the helm. The former middle school coach was left with a bare cupboard and could be a while until they crawl out of the cellar. They were outscored 526 to 365 during the winless season. Also, the Tigers only return four players off the 12-man roster from last season.

Coach David Reyes

Congratulation to Coach David Reyes on your retirement.

Grew up watching David (one my idols) when he was playing for the Deming Wildcats. Thank you for all your years of service to your community, school and players. Best of luck coach!

Week One Most Likely to Upset

Top 5 Most Likely to Upset Games for Week One
Las Cruces (No. 8) over Volcano Vista (No. 4)
Hobbs (No. 11) over Clovis (No. 5)
La Cueva (No. 6) over Cibola (No. 3)
Roswell (No. 16) over Farmington (No. 12)
Artesia (No. 15) over Carlsbad (No. 9)

Scoop: When we say most likely to upset we are thinking of some close contests between teams. We haven't put our predictions or game lines out yet but these are five games to watch on the upset radar.

Rivals: Artesia and Carlsbad will likely always be on the list as the two battle it out each season for the Eddy County Rivalry. Hobbs came close last season at Clovis and will look to upset the Wildcats on Friday night. We could see another low-scoring battle in this one.

First Timer: Cibola is sitting at number three to enter the season, their highest ranking in the top-25. La Cueva went 0-3 in the Spring but return a talented and somewhat underrated roster. Cibola has their studs. This is the game to see this week.

Just Don't Know: Las Cruces and Roswell are a pair of question marks teams heading into the season. Both are powers in their classification but lost some key pieces the last three years and could be in a development year. Cruces will host fourth-ranked Volcano Vista while Roswell hosts the top team in 5A - Farmington. It is a long trip for the number one team and Roswell, well Roswell in Roswell and under Lynn have become the team to beat in 5A.

If I Had to Pick (and I do): The odds are not in the favor as Clovis has owned this game, winning like 20 of 21 games (I didn't fact check) however, I think I am going with the Eagles.

What favorite will fall in week one?

Rankings

Ranking the Top 14 Games in Week 1

  1. La Cueva (0-0) vs Cibola (0-0)
  2. Volcano Vista (0-0) at Las Cruces (0-0)
  3. Farmington (0-0) at Roswell (0-0)
  4. Artesia (0-0) at Carlsbad (0-0)
  5. Hobbs (0-0) at Clovis (0-0)
  6. Raton (0-0) at Eunice (0-0)
  7. Cleveland (0-0) vs (Centennial (0-0)
  8. Los Lunas (0-0) at Piedra Vista (0-0)
  9. St. Pius X (0-0) at Bloomfield (0-0)
  10. St. Michael's (0-0) at Taos (0-0)
  11. Estancia (0-0) at Hatch Valley (0-0)
  12. Santa Rosa (0-0) at Dexter (0-0)
  13. Robertson (0-0) at Santa Fe (0-0)
  14. Texico (0-0) at Jal (0-0)
Deal/No Deal: We can get an early shift in the NMPreps 6A Team Rankings with three top-ten matchups. Las Cruces (No. 8) and Volcano Vista (No. 4) gives a battle of two teams that have a shot at a semifinal spot, Volcano
brings a senior loaded team while the Bulldawgs have a revamped roster after suffering losses to graduation.

Top Game: The La Cueva Bears (No. 6) feature a very underrated roster of next-level talent and the Cibola Cougars (No. 3) enter with their highest rank ever. The Cougars also feature the top-ranked quarterback in Aden Chavez and you can turn up Tupac's "All Eyes on Me" because we are all waiting to see this game.

Power Shift: The Roswell Coyotes (No. 5) are technically still the defending champ but the Farmington Scorpions (No. 1) could also claim that title. Roswell winner of the 2018 and 2019 state championships while Farmington went 5-0 and winner of the 5A Elite Bowl during the Spring. Roswell will feature a handful of new prospects on the board while Farmington brings a high-powered offense - could become a shootout.

Love Thy Neighbor: Carlsbad (No. 9) and Artesia (No. 4) square off in the Eddy County Rivalry. The Cavemen have plenty of excitement returning this season and could be a dark horse in 6A football. Artesia enters the Jeremy Maupin era and we wait to see how the Dogs rebound after two under .500 seasons. Staying on the eastern side of the state Hobbs (No. 11) travels to Clovis (No. 5) with hopes of getting upset this season after a close call during the Spring.

Most Intriguing Game: Raton and Eunice will square off in small-school football, creating a matchup of two very talented squads. Eunice has been key lately while the Raton Tigers bring a very talented roster. This one has piqued our interest the most and could end up the game of the week. Eunice will be going through a reload but years of winning should spill over into the year.
