Best & Worst Case Scenario: Eldorado Eagles

NMPreps schedule review feature for the 2021 New Mexico high school football season. How many wins, losses, and possible outcomes for each team. #nmpreps

Best Case Scenario: 8-2 overall, 6-0 district
Worst Case Scenario: 4-6 overall, 3-3 district
NMPreps Prediction: 5-5 overall, 4-2 district

Overview: The Eldorado Eagles enter the season favored in four games (Highland, Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Manzano), they have four games in which we have a coin flip (Clovis, Mayfield, Sandia, & La Cueva), and underdogs in two (Rio Rancho & Cibola). Overall, that makes for a quality schedule, giving this one an A for quality, and a B- for strength. Eldorado has some position holes they need to fill but some newcomers could make them a surprise squad in 2021. I like any place between our projected 5-wins to 7-wins this season. Also, I have them at an 80% making the playoffs - right now that could be a 12-seed.

Contenders & Pretenders: Most Likely to Dethrone Cleveland

NMPreps takes a look at some of the top teams in each classification with the likelihood of upsetting the previous champs. Yes, we are using the "Elite" Bowl games played at UNM as our defending champs.

TOP CONTENDERS

Rio Rancho Rams
(3-1 record): The Rams and new head coach Gerry Pannoni didn't fare well last season against the Cleveland Storm falling 42-0 at Lighting Bolt Stadium. Well, this year the Rams have some experience returning and games under their belt with their new head coach. Also, they feature the top-ranked running back in the state in Zach Vigil (2022). The needs are at quarterback this season; they have strengths on defense and return several skill-positioned players.

Cibola Cougars (2-0 record): Yes, the Cibola Cougars have made our 'Top Contenders' list of teams to dethrone the Cleveland Storm. The reason is clear - they return the top-ranked quarterback in the state in Aden Chavez (2023), along with wide receiver Nathan Lopez (2022) and Brayden Mummert (2023) an under the radar TE. They will need to replace Slayd Campos at running back and Steven Barela (WR/SS/QB). Two must-know names on defense are Maverick Gracio (2022), a 6-foot-4 powerful defensive end along with Middle Linebacker Peyton Harrison (2023).

Volcano Vista Hawks (2-1 record): Before the calls for my head happen. Yes, I get it the top three contenders all hail from District 1-6A. That's just to show how strong this district will be in 2021. Where to start? The Hawks looked solid in the spring and have been known to pull a perfect regular season out. Yes, Josh Gerardo (2022) is a new QB under the center but the senior to be is one of the better newcomers out this coming fall. Kieran Cordova (2022) returns at running back after rushing for 206 yards on 7 carries this spring! He'll share the backfield with Acen Aguilar (2022) who rushed for 179-yards during the spring. We then add in likely the most athletic player on the Hawks, a top-ranked basketball player as well in Kaden Valdez (2022). The senior to be is a flat-out stud on the field and went for 422-yards receiving during the spring.

La Cueva Bears (0-3 record): Head scratch? Well, for the Bears I wouldn't read too much into the 0-3 Spring season. They lost to three very quality teams in Los Lunas, Volcano Vista, and Eldorado. Also, it was projected to be a year that they would have been searching for several replacements. This leads us to this season with the Bears featuring some talent and athletes. Some names to know as we head into the 2021 season. Collis Bousliman (2022/CB), Myuh Robertson (2022/WR), and on defense we know the University of New Mexico recruits Hunter Haemker (2022), the MLB who is going to captain this defense.

THE REST

  • Clovis Wildcats: They graduated plenty. Can they replace to challenge for the state championship?
  • Eldorado Eagles: Losing several players but have a young core coming up. Maybe a year or so back?
  • Las Cruces Bulldawgs: Lost Lopez at QB and that is a big blow. Back-to-back years of losing studs might send them in a rebuild. Great coach though so could be a dark horse.

Player Rankings Class of 2023

Top Players Returning from the Class of 2023

SHANE DOUMA-SANCHEZ
Del Norte High School (Albuquerque, NM)
5-Foot-11 - Guard
Player Ranking - Overall #2 | Class: #1
Stat Line: 25.6 ppg, 4.9 apg, 5.1 rpg, 2.2 steals per
Skinny: Douma-Sanchez led the Knights to their first state championship in program history. He followed that up with winning the New Mexico Mr. Basketball, the first sophomore to do so. He has two more years left and the accolades and status will only continue to grow. He holds an offer from New Mexico Highlands University.

EXODUS AYERS
La Cueva High School (Albuquerque, NM)
6-Foot-1 - Guard
Player Ranking - Overall #7 | Class: #2
Stat Line: 18.6 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 4 apg, 2 steals per
Skinny: A two-year letterman for the Bears really flourished this season in a starting role that opened up his game. High confidence from behind the 3-point line, plays the passing lane and defense, along with distributing the basketball from the point guard role. A must-see, top player to watch during the 2021/2022 season.

ELY LOVATO
Sandia High School (Albuquerque, NM)
6-foot-2 Guard
Player Ranking - Overall: #8 | Class: #3
Stat Line: 12.9 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 2.8 apg, 2.1 spg
Skinny: Lovato is part of a duo for the Sandia Matadors that could have the Matadors thinking State Championship in 2022. Lovato can do it all for the Matadors from running point to knocking down jay's, or grabbing boards. Surely a next-level talent that is D2 to d1 talent by the end of his senior season.

SEAN ALTER
Volcano Vista High School (Albuquerque, NM)
6-foot-9 | Forward
Player Ranking: #10 | Class: #4
Stats: submit to grinejosh@yahoo.com
Skinny: The big man has been somewhat of a secret but now that we return to basketball and a regular schedule Alter will only become more of a household name. Two years left and the big man who looks to dunk on you each time or who makes a strong move to the rim is one to know in NM high school hoops.

JUDAH CASAUS
Del Norte High School (Albuquerque, NM)
5-foot-11 | Guard
Player Ranking: #11 | Class: #5
Stats: 13.6 ppg, 3.5 apg, 2.9 rpg, 2.2 spg
Skinny: Casaus is a special player. The kid is basketball. You can tell when you have a player that lives in the gym and just works. Casaus is that type of guard and one of the reasons the Knights won the 4A state championship in 2021. Quick off the dribble and can hit the 15-footer along with stepping behind the arch. His role just grew as Douma-Sanchez will be out during the 2022 season and those big-time shots now become his.

Note: Stay with NMPreps.com as we continue to release names to each of the Top Prospect List for the 2021/2022 season. This list will continue to grow through the off-season. Nominate or share insight to grinejosh@yahoo.com or 505-414-4313. Also post below.

Best & Worst Case Scenario: Clovis Wildcats

Best Case Scenario: 7-3 overall, 5-0 district
Worst Case Scenario: 2-8 overall, 2-3 district
NMPreps Prediction: 5-4 overall, 4-1 district

Overview: Our best and worst-case scenario feature creates the "what if' for the coming season. The Clovis Wildcats are all over the map and truly honest, they are anyplace from winning 8/9 games or possibly only get the worst case at 2-wins. The 2019 team was outstanding and WHAT COULD have been in 2020 had we had a true season. Well, a majority of those players are wearing cherry and silver, a Jayhawk, or at Colorado State. So what next? Maybe the most intriguing over/under number you'll see when that feature rolls out (but for argument sake or sneak peak - would you take the 3.5-wins over/under? Told you it was an intriguing number.) and we you take bids.

Best Case Scenario: 10-0 overall, 5-0 district

NMPreps 2021 Prediction: 8-2 overall, 4-1 district

Scoop: The Cleveland Storm is more likely to float around the best case or overall prediction than getting close to the worst-case scenario. Two things to keep in mind though are the Storm will be replacing four outstanding WR's, their QB, all-state linemen, and a handful on defense. Next, they play a very tough and high-quality schedule. However, the Storm typically reloads and will likely never have to rebuild. They will have replacements for those that graduated but we have to admit they are replacing an extremely talented class with so much college talent.

Player Rankings Class of 2022

Top Players from the 2022 Class

NMPreps.com will release names throughout the summer with our new player rankings. We will get you ready for the 2021/2022 season. A reminder that we will release a few names each day until we announce all players.

Players will be listed alphabetically. This Fall we will release our Top-25 for the 2022 class followed by our Top-50 overall in New Mexico.

Deniece Ryan (Highland HS): Quick-twitch athlete who can blow by defenders with the ball. She can score in a variety of ways, off penetration to the bucket with a nice floater or if left alone will hit the three. She'll need to embrace being the leader and go-to player this year. Ryan is good and just waiting for her to play with confidence to be great; she can be great.

Jaelyn Bates (Volcano Vista HS): Bates has been a top-10 player in the NMPreps Player Rankings for four years now, a very small number will reach that feat. The Volcano Vista Hawks went 13-0 last season and Bates continued her stellar play with 16 ppg, 4.5 steals, and 2.3 assists per game. Bates recently committed to division one University of New Mexico.

Jayden Jenkins (Robertson HS): Jenkins made a name for herself this postseason as she carried the Robertson Cardinals to the state championship game. A competitive and fiery forward that embraces contact and finishes well. At 5-10 she could be a force again this coming season and Robertson likely the favorite.

Jerzie Jones (La Cueva HS): The Bears along with Jerzie Jones hit our radar mid-season during the short Spring schedule. However, Jones is a must-see shooter that hit 27 threes last season, In the game,x we saw she went 3 for 5 from behind the arch. She averaged 17 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game as a junior.

Juliana Aragon (Bernalillo HS), The four-year starter led the state in scoring last with 26.7 ppg. She has helped guide the Lady Spartans to a pair of Elite Eight showings and three state tournament appearances, both of which are likely records. Aragon holds two offers from this summer - New Mexico Highlands and Trinidad State (JC).

Kiiyani Anitielu (Farmington HS), When the season tips off Anitielu will be a five-year starter for the Lady Scorpions. This season she averaged 21.3 ppg for the Scorpions guiding them to an 8-3 overall record. The 5-7 guard is one of the top shooters you'll find in the state

Natalia Chavez (Volcano Vista HS): Another familiar name on the list of top players from the '22 class. Chavez was the second-ranked player in the NMPreps Rankings last season and had a remarkable season to go with it. She led the team in scoring with 17 points per game, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.4 steals. She also hit the game-winning shot to win the 5A state championship. Chavez has a few division one offers that include Colorado State University with interest growing.

Payton Edwards (Moriarty HS): Edwards led the Pintos in scoring, primarily off a high volume of shots but she has the green light because she can knock them down. Edwards provides scoring that was lacking in the Pintos the last two years and will be the focus of the offense moving forward.
