King of New Mexico: Top Head Coach Power Rankings

King of New Mexico: Top Head Coach Power Rankings

Today, we take another look at the King of New Mexico feature as we rank the top head coaches in New Mexico high school football We took several categories (state championships, perfect seasons, 10-win seasons, etc) and assigned them points. We also gave some points for players making it to college football and those that do the extra or "likeness" (social media, promoting to colleges, etc) - the coaches that go the extra mile. Again, it's not perfect and you can debate it but for a second year here we go!

Seasons: 2020, 2019, 2018

6A & 5A FOOTBALL

#1 HEATH RIDENOUR

Cleveland High Schools
Record: 27-3
Pts: 106
Notes: Has a state championship, two perfect seasons, and record 27-wins in three years.

#2 JEFF LYNN
Roswell High School
Record: 24-2
Pts: 87
Notes: A majority of points come from back-to-back state titles.

#3 JEREMY MAUPIN
Artesia High School
Record: 22-6
Pts: 76
Notes: Points come from his three years at Los Lunas High School.

#4 BRANDON BACK
La Cueva High School
Record: 21-7
Pts: 62
Notes: Brandon Back and La Cueva won it all in 2018 after a perfect regular season. Could be on the climb again as the Bears could be very good in 2021.

#5 AARON OCAMPO
Centennial High School
Record: 22-5
Pts: 47
Notes: Definitely goes above and beyond for his program and gets wins along the way. Player development is among the best as he continues to rebuild each season.

#6 CHAD WALLIN
Volcano Vista High School
Record: 22-5
Pts: 31
Notes: The 11-win season really boosted the Hawks but the Hawks, although playing in the toughest district in the state, continue to hold their own.

#7 JEFF DALTON
Farmington High School
Record: 19-8
Pts: 28
Notes: The riser on the power rankings with a 5-0 season and 19-wins in the last three years.

#8 CAL FULLERTON
Clovis High School
Record: 15-13
Pts: 20
Notes: We could give extra points for playing the toughest schedule consistently. Also, getting players to the next level is on the rise, you can tell they give it all at CHS.

#9 RODERICK WILLIAMS
Cibola High School
Record: 15-12
Pts: 18
Notes: Cibola is a tough job as kids have either gone to Volcano Vista or to the Rio Rancho schools. Head coach Williams continues to excel with the Cougars even when projected to rebuild.

#10 MARK LOPEZ
Las Cruces High School
Record: 19-9
Pts: 12
Notes: The Bulldawgs had a great Spring season and although they will have holes to fill this Fall they will be a threat. Lopez is one of the few head coaches that took over for mentor and kept things moving in the winning direction.

ALBUQUERQUE HIGH SCHOOL BULLDOGS
Season: 2021
Best Case Scenario: 7-3 overall, 3-3 district
Worst Case Scenario: 3-7 overall, 1-5 district
--
NMPreps Prediction: 4-6 overall, 1-5 district

Overview: The Albuquerque High Bulldogs have a favorable schedule in the pre-district slate and could be 4-0 entering district play. Plus they have their first five games at Milne, their home field in APS. The hard part for the Bulldogs will be battling in a district with some powers - Eldorado, La Cueva, and Clovis. If I had to flip a few games watch for the Organ Mountain opener and the Del Norte game. They could either go 2-0 or 0-2 in those coin flips.

Revisiting Realignment 2022/2023, 2023/2024, 2024/2025

Do you agree with my alignment on level of competitiveness?

  • Yes

  • No

Results are only viewable after voting.

Gadsden and Rio Grande will play independent this year, others have done it in the past. When looking at classification alignment we should look more than just an enrollment number. Why not look at competitive level too? I get the old school, want to win, get better. True, but that is just not easy for all when you lack tradition (for the most part), jimmy and joes and money that some others have or can get.

I say that we should also consider competitiveness along with enrollment numbers. It'll help develop more schools and interest at schools that maybe have never had the interest. Just look what the short season and schedules have done for some schools.

Where to Start
First, let's go to three year blocks.
I took the 2019, 2018, and 2017 season for competitive two-year look. Record and Playoffs plus the level played at then until the first three year block with this look.
7 teams crowned state champs - same as now.
Will stay in class unless enrollment drops under 1400.
Move up and down based on success or lack of success in terms of wins/losses and playoffs. Get points for District championships, records (above .500), district placement, and playoffs along with playoff wins and state championships.

Seeding this weekend … who’s out?

Only 8 teams make the tournament this year. District champs are automatically in.

In 5A, Hobbs, Rio Rancho, and Rio Grande will be in as district champs. La Cueva and Onate are likely going to be district champs as well, but need to win this weekend.

Sandia is probably in. That leaves a bunch of team in the mix for the last three spots: Piedra Vista, Carlsbad, Cleveland, Volcano Vista, Centennial, Farmington. Some quality teams won’t make it.
