Grine Saturday Morning Coffee: Friday Review

Good morning, we are back with some Saturday morning coffee. We breakdown the news from Friday night and all the updates from across New Mexico. #nmpreps

TRIPS RIGHT: TOP THREE STORIES FROM FRIDAY

1. Lynn-Sanity:
Okay, Jeremy Lin (former Knick) can keep that name. We had to give some love though as the unranked Roswell Coyotes get their first win of the season over ninth ranked Carlsbad, 21-14. Keep in mind that Roswell has played one of the most difficult schedules, during a rebuild year.

2. OT Magic: Another Top-25 team fell on Friday night as the unranked Belen Eagles improved to 2-2 on the season with a 20-14 overtime win over visiting Piedra Vista (No. 19). The Eagles threw the ball to the corner on their first play of OT to secure a 20-14 win.

3. 5A Powers and a Massive Storm: Farmington (No. 3/No. 1 in 5A), Goddard (No. 4/No. 2 in 5A) and Los Lunas (No. 7/No. 3 in 5A) all move along with wins. Farmington with a quality win over a very good Durango, Colorado squad. Goddard scores at the end to beat Hobbs (30-27) and Los Lunas takes out Cibola (26-19). Also, in Artesia, the number one team in the state the Cleveland Storm dropped 70-points in a 41-point win over #13 Artesia (70-29).

FRIDAY NIGHT SUPERLATIVES: YEARBOOK STYLE

Best Duo:
Quarterback Aidan Armenta (2022) and WR Exodus Ayers (2023) connected on a pair of touchdowns as the La Cueva Bears had a shutout win on Friday night over Sandia, 35-0. The first one was a 22-yard touchdown pass.

Most Likely to Succeed: Make it 6 in a row as the Las Cruces Bulldawgs take another win over rival Mayfield. Quarterback Dallas Boyd (2022) and Elijah Ogas (2022) totaled for over 250-yards on the ground. Ogas with four TDs (145-rushing yards).

Life of the Party: Belen quarterback Diego Espinoza (2022) hit Elijah Romero (2023) for a game winning touchdown in overtime to give the unranked Eagles a win over No. 19 Piedra Vista.

Most Upbeat Attitude: Los Lunas quarterback Paul Cieremans (2023) answered on the big stage. He had a 50-yard touchdown pass to Emilio Mora early in the contest to cement the Tigers win.

School President: Evan Wysong (Cleveland). The Storm quarterback, rushed for a pair of TDs, threw for a TD, and oh yeah also kicks the FG's. He started the night with a 53-yard TD run. The rest of the presidents cabinet includes a 61-yard TD run by Nick Trujillo (Had another 12-TD run), Josh Perry, RB (2022) added three touchdown runs. Add in a 52-yard TD run by Jaiden Nunez and the top team in New Mexico moves to 5-0 on the season.

Friday 2-Minute Drill: Preview

NMPreps look at week 5 of the New Mexico high school football season. #nmpreps

TOP-3 MUST-SEE

Cibola (2-1) at Los Lunas (4-0):
We have a clash between two of the top quarterbacks in New Mexico. Cibola (No. 6 NMPreps Top 20) featuring the top-ranked QB in the state with junior Aden Chavez looking to build off his 946 passing yards. Los Lunas (No. 7) is led by junior Paul Cieremans who has 561-yards on the season along with 469-yards.
More: Lines/Predictions.

Hobbs (3-1) at Goddard (3-0):
On offense we have a tandem for the 4th ranked Goddard Rockets in Noah Reese (QB/2022) and 2023 running back Javyn Morales. The Hobbs Eagles (No. 14) will have a strong defensive unit in Kenyon Singleton (2022/LB) and Aldo Argott (2022/LB). The Eagles are winners of the last two games are looking to notch another top-25 win.
More: Lines/Predictions.

Las Cruces (1-3) at Mayfield (2-2):
The most talked about rivalry in New Mexico high school football happens this Friday with the 12th ranked Las Cruces Bulldawgs and 16th ranked Mayfield Trojans. Although the two are no longer in the same classification or district this longtime rivalry promises to be a must see game.
More: Line/Predictions

CLASS PRESIDENT: THREE MUST-SEE PLAYERS

Ace Gonzalez, Jr., LB (Robertson HS):
The junior linebacker is a new name to the scene but at 47-total tackles on the season he is quickly gaining notice. Robertson is a heavy favorite tonight against Espanola Valley.

Jahvon Maes McChriston & Eloy Vigil, Jr., LB (Bernalillo HS): The Spartans linebacker duo will look to continue their winning ways as the 4-0 Spartans take on Moriarty. McChriston and Vigil both have 5-sacks each to start the season.

Aiden Granado, Jr., RB (Silver HS): Ready for another new name on the charts this season? Junior running back Aiden Granado hits the scene after 4 games (4-0 record) for the Silver Colts; He currently has 657-yards (16.4 ypc) and a pair of touchdowns. Note: Silver is on a BYE but worth the mention - they next take on Chaparral on 9/24.

Player Rankings Top New Mexico HS Running Backs for the 2021 Season

Football: Top Running Backs for the 2021 Season

With the 2021 New Mexico high school football season only two months away, we take a look at the top running backs returning this season.

BRAXTON HALL
Ruidoso High School (Ruidoso, NM)
--
2022
Skinny: When the Warriors take the field this fall the player that we will have our eyes on is Braxton Hall. The senior rushed for 506 yards (5.2 per rush) and 4 touchdowns as a junior. Also, has nice hands and plays tough on defense.

CAYDEN WALTON
Raton High School (Raton, NM)
5-foot-9 | 180 lbs
2023
Skinny: Walton will start his fourth varsity season when the 2021 season kicks off. Already with nearly 3,000 rushing yards, the 2022 RB will look to get back to 2019 season form after a solid 2020 spring season. Walton and the Tigers are 3A contenders, and this could be the breakout season that we see a return of Raton late in the playoffs.

JAKE BARRERA
Artesia High School (Artesia, NM)
5-foot-9
2022
Ranking: Coming Soon
Skinny: The Artesia Bulldogs enter a new era under head coach Jeremy Maupin and star running back Jake Barrera should be happier than most. The Bulldogs are likely to run the ball more and Barrera who rushed for nearly 500 yards in 5 games could be thinking a big season.

JAVYN MORALES
Goddard High School (Roswell, NM)
5-foot-10 | 155 lbs
2023
Ranking: Coming Soon
Skinny: With Morales, we are talking newcomers that will be in a bigger role for the 2021 season. The Goddard Rockets run the ball and Morales will be the beneficiary of that style. Not only do they run the ball in, which is in his favor, but Morales has the explosive speed and can change directions with the best of them.

MARTELL MORA
Santa Fe High School (Santa Fe, NM)
5-foot-11d | 175 lbs
2022
Ranking: Coming Soon
Skinny: Mora has been on a mission of putting on muscle and living in the weight room. Mora is one to watch and with a combined added muscle he has lightning speed. In two games, 7 carries, he rushed for 100-yards and 2 touchdowns during the Spring season. The Demons have a shot at surprising teams and Mora could find himself with offers to play at the next level.

ZACH VIGIL
Rio Rancho High School (Rio Rancho, NM)
5-foot-10 | 185 lbs
2022
Position Rankings: #1
Skinny: Zach Vigil checks in as the top-ranked running back for the 2021 season. That likely doesn't shock many as Vigil has been on the scene since his freshman season and when you look at his sophomore season, the last full season we played in New Mexico, Vigil rushed for 1,253-yards and 18-touchdowns. We've had many great backs come out of Rio Rancho and Vigil could have his name with the rest of them. The last great Ram running back won the New Mexico Mr. Football award and Vigil could be a favorite as we head into the 2021 season.
