Dave Barney

Not a football item, but any time a New Mexico prep coach with 41 state titles retires, it's worth mentioning. Barney is the Albuquerque Academy swim coach. Amazingly, he has worked at Academy either as a teacher or coach since 1967.

New Mexicans in the NFHS Hall of Fame: Ralph Tasker, Dave Barney, Jim Hulsman, Pete Shock, Bill Gentry, Tommy McDonald, Ralph Bowyer, and Mel Otero.

Daily Dimes: Friday Night Has Much Watch Basketball

Cleveland (9-0) at Atrisco Heritage (6-2): The Storm is trying to lock up the 1-seed at the state tournament. Atrisco Heritage is trying to stay above water on a very active bubble. A win here will only get either closer to locking up a playoff bid. Also, a DC is on the line tonight. Cleveland 5-0 and Atrisco 5-1 both have a chance at claiming or becoming Co-DCs.

La Cueva (6-0) at Sandia (4-1): La Cueva like Cleveland is another undefeated district favorite in the driver's seat of locking up a top seed at state. Sandia a bubble-out team is in need of a win here to get back into the conversation and also make it a conversation as a DC.

Hobbs (5-2) at Roswell (8-1); Clovis (5-4) at Carlsbad (4-3): All four are still technically in a position to earn a bid but tonight should create some separation in that conversation. Hobbs, Clovis, and Carlsbad are all 1-2 in district play with Roswell sitting at 3-0 through the first-round district games. The second slate starts tonight and it's a must-win every night until we eliminate. Roswell and Hobbs both hold bids, right now, but a lot could change here.
