NMPreps.com's guide to the 2019 3A New Mexico high school football state championship game.
NO. 1 BLOOMFIELD BOBCATS (12-0) VS NO. 2 PORTALES RAMS (11-1)
Day: Saturday, November 30th
Time: 1:00PM
Where: Bloomfield High School (Bloomfield, New Mexico)
Weather: 37 Partly sunny, sunny, cold
BOBCATS
Record: 12-0
Head Coach: Bob Allcorn
PF: 582 (48.5)
PA: 186 (15.5)
Road: Semifinals (W, over Grants 48-41); Quarterfinals (W, over Ruidoso 47-27).
Offense: Senior quarterback Vincent Marquez has put up big numbers this season with 3,387-yards and 44-touchdown passes. After his lowest passing yards of the season with 182-yards in the semifinals and 3-INTs he will look to come out and prove this time around in the state championship, after losing last season, that they are here to take it all. Difference maker Kenyon Mosley (2020) has rushed for over 1,056-yards on the season and his career best 183-yards rushing and 3 touchdowns against Grants in the semifinals.
Defense: JT Seitzinger (2020) and Emilio Candelaria (2021), the Bobcats duo, along with two-way player Mosley, look to contain the Portales Rams. The three of the Bobcats have over 200 total tackles and Mosley bringing 12.5 sacks on the season.
Preview: The Bobcats made a run last season, upsetting the top seed, to play in the state championship. This season they are the 1-seed and looking to extend their 12-0 perfect record. Teams with perfect records in the state championship in the last three years is 10-5 (all classifications) - last season undefeated teams went 3-1 (the lone loss came in the 6A game with both teams being undefeated going into the title game).
RAMS
Record: 11-1
Head Coach: Jaime Ramirez
PF: 388 (32.3)
PA: 154 (12.8)
Road: Semifinals (W, Lovington 26-7); Quarterfinals (W, Silver 33-7)
Offense: Senior running back Romeo Gbassagee has an average of 10.5 yards per carry (114.5 per game) for 1,260 yards this season. Add in 18 rushing touchdowns for the two-way star and the Rams are hoping to bring pressure to the Bobcats who struggled some against the run against a top back last week.
Defense: The most talented defense in 4A football will be on display come this Saturday. Isiah Saiz (2020), Philip Blidi (2020), and Romeo Gbassagee (2020) lead the way but the depth on the Rams defense is the real deal. This defense has also a high mark 28-total sacks on the years against a tough schedule.
Preview: The Rams entered the season as the favorite and continue to be the favorite to win it all. This could be one of the most talented teams in the classification with a handful of next level talent. The lone loss came against Goddard which was ranked 3rd in 5A football this season so they will be battled tested.
NMPreps Numbers
Prediction: Portales 38, Bobcats 30
Line: Portales -8.5
Over/Under: 68
