Daily Dimes – Week 2 – Saturday, December 7th

Publisher Joshua Grine's Must-See Games in New Mexico High School Basketball

As the basketball season heats up, several marquee matchups are on the docket for today. Here’s a breakdown of the top games to watch, including what makes them compelling and why you should tune in.

Eldorado (1-1) at Albuquerque (1-1), 7 PM

Why Watch:
This clash in the Albuquerque Metro area pits two programs with something to prove early in the season. Eldorado, led by their hall of fame head coach, is looking to rebound after an early loss. The Albuquerque Bulldogs, under a similarly passionate leader, have the chance to defend their home court and grab a critical resume-building win. Expect high intensity, with adjustments playing a key role.

Favorite: Slight edge to Eldorado. Their guard play and defensive intensity could make the difference in this evenly matched showdown.

Farmington (3-0) at Santa Fe (2-0), 7 PM

Capital City Tournament Championship (Santa Fe High)
Why Watch:
Farmington has burst onto the scene as a surprise contender, boasting a balanced attack led by standout guards Michael Beck and Landon Begay. Their disciplined play has made them an early season darling. On the other hand, Santa Fe High, anchored by guard Joe Gonzales, thrives in front of their home crowd. This matchup promises a clash of styles, with Farmington’s sharp offense squaring off against Santa Fe’s physical and aggressive play.

Favorite: Santa Fe High. The home-court advantage and tournament atmosphere could propel them to victory, but Farmington’s momentum makes this a toss-up.

St. Pius X (3-1) vs Albuquerque Academy (2-1), 5 PM

Sandia Prep Tournament Championship
Why Watch:
The private school rivalry always delivers, and this one promises to live up to the hype. St. Pius X, featuring a mix of dynamic scorers and stifling defense, faces off against Albuquerque Academy, which leans on its disciplined system and high-IQ players. West side versus east side, black and gold versus red and black—this rivalry is as much about bragging rights as it is about early-season positioning.

Favorite: St. Pius X. Their early season form and depth give them the edge in this classic rivalry.

Artesia (2-0) vs Hobbs (4-0), 1 PM

City of Champions Tournament Championship (Artesia)
Why Watch:
This is the game of the day, featuring two top-ten teams in New Mexico high school basketball. Hobbs, known for their relentless pace and scoring prowess, enters unbeaten and full of confidence. Artesia counters with disciplined execution and a packed house of fervent fans cheering them on in the tournament final. This one played in their old gym as they welcome back the state championship team from 1995. Both teams boast star players, making this a must-watch for fans of high-stakes basketball. Also, adding to the mix is all-state caliber transfer Braylon Vega now playing for Artesia after his first two years as a Hobbs Eagle.

Favorite: Hobbs. Their ability to score in bunches and overwhelm teams with their speed makes them the slight favorite, but don’t count out Artesia’s resilience, especially at home.

NMPreps Bowl Games

We likely won’t see a centralized state championship game anytime soon, but what about creating a special event to kick off the season or highlight the midpoint? Imagine a Week 1 or Week 5 triple-header at a single location—first year at UNM, second year at NMSU.

Let’s brainstorm the logistics:
  • Scheduling: Which teams would you like to see face off in this series? Could we get schools to agree in advance to participate?
  • Sponsors: Have any of you worked on similar projects, and who might be interested in backing an event like this? Is it worth exploring?
  • Fan Engagement: How could we make this a must-see showcase for New Mexico high school football?
As we enter Year 2 of the 2024-2025 block, it’s worth considering how NMPreps can spearhead something innovative for the 2026_2027 block.

Would this idea be worth exploring? Your thoughts and insights would be valuable!

Sandia Matadors and Atrisco Heritage Jaguars Set for Early-Season Clash

On a quiet Wednesday night in New Mexico high school basketball, two powerhouses are set to light up the court in a matchup that promises to deliver fireworks. The Sandia Matadors, ranked No. 2 in Class 5A, and the No. 4-ranked Atrisco Heritage Jaguars will face off in one of the most highly anticipated early-season games.

Sandia comes into the game riding high after a thrilling 83-78 victory over the reigning Class 4A champions, Highland Hornets. The Matadors proved why they are one of the state’s top teams, with a balanced attack that saw four players hit double digits in scoring. Zaire Ndyabagye (2025) led the charge with 20 points and nine rebounds, setting the tone as Sandia’s go-to player. Freshman sensation Gad Harris (2028) announced his arrival in spectacular fashion, tallying 20 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists. Supporting them were Ladovick Hogues (2026) and Thomas Adams (2025), who each chipped in 11 points, showcasing the depth of this Sandia squad.

Meanwhile, Atrisco Heritage wasted no time flexing its muscles in a commanding 72-46 win over Clovis. The Jaguars, anchored by the electrifying Latavious Morris (2025), bring their own arsenal of talent. Morris, who flirted with leaving for the Albuquerque Basketball Club before opting to stay, is poised to lead Atrisco deep into the season. Joining him are standout players Marcus Quezada (2025), a versatile 6-foot-3 wing, and Kadarious Smith (2025), a smooth guard with a knack for making plays in key moments.

This matchup is more than just a top-five clash; it’s a statement game for both programs. Sandia will look to showcase its balanced attack and emerging stars, while Atrisco aims to assert its place among the elite in Class 5A.
