New Mexico High School Baseball – Class 4A 1st Round Preview

The 2025 New Mexico high school baseball state tournament starts on Friday, May 9, and Saturday, May 10, with best-of-three first-round series hosted by the top eight seeds in Class 4A. Each matchup opens with Game 1 on Friday, followed by Game 2 on Saturday morning and, if needed, Game 3 approximately two hours after Game 2.

No. 1 Artesia Bulldogs (20-6) vs. No. 16 Bernalillo Spartans (11-14)

Game 1: Friday, May 9 @ 7 p.m. | Game 2: Saturday, May 10 @ 11 a.m.

Artesia enters as the top overall seed after a dominant 20-6 regular season and an undefeated 9-0 run through District 4-4A. The Bulldogs boast one of the most complete teams in the bracket, surrendering just 94 runs across the season behind a deep pitching staff led by junior arms Jack Byers, Daelon Pacheco, Brant Usherwood, and Diego Morales.

Bernalillo, the fourth-place finisher in District 6-4A, snuck into the field as the 16-seed and will look to lean on senior Uriel Castro (.487 AVG, 11 doubles) and sophomore slugger Ulisses Castro (.522 AVG, 5 HR) to stay competitive. However, the Spartans have given up nearly as many runs as they’ve scored (186-192) and will need near-perfect outings to pull the upset.

Prediction: Artesia wins series 2-0 – The Bulldogs’ pitching depth and playoff experience should carry them through with relative ease.

Feature New Mexico HS Baseball - 2025 Class 3A 1st Round Preview

2025 Class 3A New Mexico High School Baseball 1st Round Preview
The opening round of the New Mexico high school baseball playoffs begins Friday, May 9th, with best-of-three series featuring seeds No. 5 through No. 12. Teams will play one game Friday and—if necessary—a doubleheader Saturday to determine who advances to the quarterfinals.

Top Four Seeds – 2025 Class 3A Baseball Playoffs

No. 1 NMMI (19-5) – The Colts enter the postseason as the top seed after dominating District 4-3A with an 11-1 record. With a deep pitching staff and disciplined offense, NMMI has the tools to make a championship run.

No. 2 East Mountain (20-6) – A strong finish in 4-3A and a 10-2 district mark earned East Mountain the second seed. The Timberwolves boast one of the top teamsin the class and are especially tough at home.

No. 3 Robertson (17-8) – The Cardinals split the District 2-3A title with rival St. Michael’s and have one of the most experienced lineups in the bracket. Their balance of power and pitching makes them a serious contender.

No. 4 St. Michael’s (16-7) – The Horsemen have been plagued by the bye week and early exits in recent postseasons, falling in the quarterfinals each of the past three years despite high seeds: as the No. 3 seed in 2024 (upset by No. 6 Ruidoso), the No. 3 seed in 2023 (loss to No. 11 East Mountain), and the No. 1 seed in 2022 (eliminated by No. 8 Santa Fe Indian). Also in the 8-team bracket in 2021 they lost as the 3-seed to 6-seed Robertson.

No. 5 West Las Vegas Dons (16-7) vs. No. 12 Navajo Prep Eagles (13-13)

Game 1: Friday, May 9 at 6 p.m. @ West Las Vegas High School – Las Vegas, NM

Despite being the lower seed, District 1-3A champion Navajo Prep enters this first-round series with a statistical profile that suggests a potential upset bid. The Eagles lead Class 3A with a team batting average of .396 and have a trio of high-powered hitters in junior Khol Johnson (.609 AVG), sophomore Jashyro Bileen (.597 AVG), and sophomore Kotlyn Holyan (.420 AVG). Offensively, the Eagles have plated 216 runs on the season—15 more than the Dons—but have also allowed 247, the highest of any playoff team in 3A.

Feature 4A District Race & Week 11 Playoff Watch

Here's where it stands in 4A after Monday's games:

Dist. 1: Bloomfield (8-1) has clinched the district over Kirtland Central (5-3) and Aztec (5-3). KC should finish second as they have only Shiprock left while Aztec plays Bloomfield. Bloomfield should be seeded 3-5. KC and Aztec are both on the state bubble.
Dist. 2: Los Alamos (11-0) has clinched, and Moriarty has a faint hope for a state bid. Los Alamos has moved up in MaxPreps and now has a shot at hosting the first round.
Dist. 3: The three-game set this week between Deming (6-0) and Santa Teresa (5-1) could shake up the 4A seedings. Whichever team wins two of three will win at least a share of the district. Looking at their MaxPreps rankings, Deming is No. 4 and Santa Teresa is no. 12. If Deming wins the district outright, they could get a 3-5 seed, but if they don’t, they could fall out of the top eight and have to travel the first weekend. Chaparral (1-5) seems likely to make the tournament barring a major slip-up against Silver.
Dist. 4: This district also has key games still yet to play. Artesia (6-0) swept Lovington in a makeup DH on Monday, and are in the running for the No. 1 seed at state. But Artesia still has three games with Goddard (5-1). If Goddard wins two of three for a share of the district title, that could throw the 4A seeding for a loop, considering that the Rockets are only no. 11 in the latest MaxPreps. Lovington (1-5) is a bubble team for state and could use a three-game sweep over Portales this week.
Dist. 5: St. Pius (8-0) has won the district. Grants (5-2) and Belen (3-3) follow, and play each other Tuesday night in Grants. Valencia is maybe a bubble team. SPX should get the no. 2 seed; could be no. 1 if Artesia doesn’t win its district. It will be interesting to see how Grants and Belen get seeded in relation to some of the district champs (AA, maybe Deming, Bloomfield, LA), but both should host the first round.
Dist. 6: Academy (7-0) has clinched the district; the Chargers have lost to a bunch of the other top 4A teams and should be seeded 4-6. Hope Christian (3-4) rallied for two in the seventh to beat Valley (3-3) on Monday. Bernalillo (3-3) is right there. Hope has only Del Norte left; Valley has Del Norte and then a season-ender at Bernalillo; Bernalillo has Academy and Valley. A lot could happen here; Bernalillo could finish as high as second in this district or fall to a 13-15 seed at state.

Feature 5A District Race and Week 11 Playoff Watch

Here is where the district races stand in 5A after some big games on Monday, with some thoughts on seeding.

Dist. 1: Cleveland (6-2) jumped back on top when Cibola knocked off Rio Rancho (5-2) last week. A lot could happen here because Rio Rancho has a killer final week: at Farmington Tuesday, home for Cleveland Friday, and at Piedra Vista Saturday. Cleveland also plays Volcano Vista (4-5). PV (3-6), Cibola (3-6) and Farmington (2-5) could all finish anywhere from 4th through 6th in the district and all should make the state tournament.

Dist. 2: La Cueva (8-0) will almost certainly win the district after Eldorado (6-2) swept Sandia (6-2) on Monday. Most likely, Eldorado will be second in the district and Sandia third, meaning Sandia is going to fall down to the 6-8 seed range at state. LC has the inside track to the no. 1 seed.

OT: Mississippi Playoff Format

Recently the MAIS revamped the playoffs. In 4a football there are 20 schools and 3 separate playoffs. Division 1 is a 4 team playoff for the teams with the highest power point average (kinda like bcs rankings). Division 2 is the next 6 power rankings, and Division 3 being the next 6. Only 4 4a teams are excluded.

3 and 2A have 2 separate brackets for 16 schools in each level.

That's 7 "State Champions" for 52 total schools.

I guess it could get worse that NMAA 6-2A, 8 man, and 6 man set up.

OT: Northern New Mexico Hires Men's and Women's Coach

Northern New Mexico College lived up to its name with its athletics hires Tuesday.

The school announced the hires of Alcalde’s Mike Dominguez and Española’s Mandy Montoya as its head coaches for men’s (Dominguez) and women’s basketball (Montoya) openings. Also, the school plucked Los Alamos athletic director Guy Meyer as an adviser to President Hector Balderas, while making former women’s basketball head coach Samantha Stukes an athletic adviser to the president and the athletic department.

Meyer will continue to serve as Los Alamos’ AD while also serving his adviser role, NNMC announced in a news release.

Team Rankings Week 11 New Mexico HS 5A & 4A Baseball Rankings (April 28)

Week 11 NMPreps 5A Baseball Rankings (April 28):

The final week of the New Mexico high school baseball regular season is here, and district championships are on the line across the state. While La Cueva and Carlsbad continue to control the top of the rankings, the 5A landscape remains wide open behind them, especially in the chaotic District 1-5A where every game matters down the stretch.
