Daily Dimes: Tuesday, December 3rd
By J Grine

Welcome back to the Daily Dimes, where we spotlight the must-see matchups in New Mexico high school basketball. Here's a look at tonight's games:

Hobbs (1-0) at Centennial (1-1)
The Hobbs Eagles are out to prove their No. 3 (5A) ranking is legitimate after a commanding win over Brownfield, TX, with guard Abraham Pena (14 points, 4 assists) stepping up as a playmaker. Centennial had a rough opener, losing 58-27 to El Paso-Franklin, TX, but rebounded with a 56-29 victory over Los Lunas. Can they show consistency in week two? Real or No Deal in week 2.
Favorite: Hobbs, -7.5

Gallup (1-1) at Pojoaque Valley (1-0)
Gallup is on a rollercoaster start, dropping their opener 52-35 to Valencia but squeaking by Deming 57-54. Meanwhile, Pojoaque Valley is gaining traction as a preseason dark horse after a 48-39 win over Albuquerque Academy. The hosts will look to maintain momentum.
Favorite: Pojoaque Valley, -11.5

St. Michael's (0-0) at St. Pius X (1-0)
The Dakota Montoya era at St. Michael's begins with a road test against St. Pius X, fresh off a nail-biting 55-53 win over Valley. With both teams dealing with limited rosters after last weekend’s football games, this Catholic-school showdown promises intensity.
Favorite: St. Pius X, -3.5

Valencia (2-0) at Del Norte (1-0)
Valencia is looking like an early sleeper with convincing wins over Deming (45-35) and Gallup (52-35). Del Norte, while ranked, remains somewhat of an unknown despite an emphatic 70-32 win over Cottonwood Classical. This could be the game that sets the tone for both squads moving forward. Another early Real or No Deal.
Favorite: Del Norte, -1.5

Volcano Vista (1-0) at La Cueva (0-1)
Volcano Vista's powerhouse program is poised to roll past La Cueva, which has struggled with roster turnover and a downward trend in recent seasons. Expect this one to be a lopsided affair.
Favorite: Volcano Vista, -20.5

Team Rankings Week 2 Rankings - December 2nd

5A BASKETBALL AFTER ONE WEEK

The basketball season tipped off with a flurry of action as the state's top-ranked teams took the court for their opening games. The Volcano Vista Hawks, ranked No. 1, left no doubt about their dominance, cruising past the ranked Albuquerque Bulldogs in an 86-43 rout. It was a statement win to kick off the season, showcasing why they sit atop the rankings.

Meanwhile, the No. 2 Sandia Matadors had their hands full against a tough Highland Hornets squad, one of the top programs in Class 4A. In a high-scoring showdown last Wednesday evening, Sandia edged out a thrilling 83-78 victory over the Hornets.

Over in Hobbs, the No. 3 Hobbs Eagles wasted no time asserting themselves. On Saturday, November 23rd—the first day games were permitted—they handled Brownfield, Texas, with ease, securing a 74-53 win in front of their home crowd.

The No. 4 Atrisco Heritage Jaguars were equally impressive in their debut, dismantling their opponent 72-46 on opening Wednesday night. Their balanced attack and suffocating defense set the tone for what promises to be a strong season.

Rounding out the top five, the Cleveland Storm were idle during the opening week but remain a team to watch as the season progresses.

Elsewhere in the rankings, the Rio Rancho Rams surged two spots after a 2-0 start, highlighted by dominant wins over Los Alamos (80-30) and Clovis (76-61). The Eldorado Eagles also impressed, rolling past Rio Grande 80-46 in their Wednesday opener.

For the Las Cruces Bulldawgs, it was a tough start to the season as they fell just short in a nail-biter against El Paso-Montwood, Texas, losing 54-52 on the road. The Alamogordo Tigers faced a scare but ultimately avoided an upset, narrowly defeating Silver 57-51 in their opener.

As for the Organ Mountain Knights, fans will have to wait a bit longer to see their new era begin, as they were idle during the opening week. With the season now in full swing, the battles on the hardwood are just getting started, and all eyes are on how these ranked teams will navigate the road ahead. Santa Fe also idle during the opening week.

2024/2025 Preseason New Mexico High School Basketball Rankings and Players to Watch

The stage is set for another thrilling season of New Mexico high school basketball as NMPreps unveils the 2024/2025 preseason rankings and top players to watch. With powerhouse programs continuing their dominance and a fresh wave of talent ready to make their mark, this season promises to be one for the books.

3A Basketball

The Robertson Cardinals are looking to make their fourth consecutive trip to the state championship game — winning it all in 2022 before falling in the title game in 2023 and 2024. Do they get back on top? After going 27-3 last season, here's why we like them to make another run this year: the return of a trio of standouts. Jesse James Gonzales (2025) leads the speedy guard play, Nathaniel Gonzales (2025) shines as a versatile utility player, and Nathan Gonzales (2027) is emerging as one of the best big men in the classification, posting 8.1 PPG and 6 rebounds per game as a freshman.

After the Cardinals, it's a mixed bag of challengers. Santa Fe Indian has been a perennial threat under head coach Jason Abeyta, and this season should be no different despite losing key players from last year’s Final Four squad. The bright spot is the return of first-team all-state guard Kenyen Callado, a 6’1” sharpshooter who provides a strong offensive presence. The Braves finished last season 23-8 and were runners-up in the competitive District 2-3A behind Robertson.

The Bosque Bobcats face similar challenges, needing to replace their top two scorers. However, head coach Clifton Davidson — who led Bosque to a state title in 2020 — returns a talented roster. Josiah Wilson (2027), who averaged 8.4 PPG, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.7 assists, is poised for a breakout year. Oliver Tumolo (2025), who chipped in 7.1 PPG and 5.8 rebounds last season, also returns to bolster the lineup.

Hot Springs is another team favored to make another Final Four run after a strong 25-6 season. Head coach Derek Bean, a two-time state champion (2021, 2019), brings back senior Adrian Gomez (12.7 PPG) as a consistent scorer and introduces rising star Tristan Polanco (2026), who could be the Tigers’ breakout player. Hot Springs remains dominant in District 3-3A and is expected to continue that streak.

Rounding out the top five is St. Michael’s. The Horsemen, 2023 state champions, underperformed last season but look to rebound under new head coach Dakota Montoya. A talented core returns, including Reed Bass (2025), Donevan Ricker (2026), Ryan Hunt (2027), and athletic high-flyer Nick Angelley (2025).

Feature Week 15: State Championships Picks, Favorites, and Previews

Week 15: State Championships Picks, Favorites, and Previews

Championship Saturday is upon us, and the stakes couldn’t be higher. With five games spread across all classes, this is the day every player, coach, and fan has been waiting for. But there’s a catch: all games kick off at 1 p.m. MT, so fans will have to make the tough choice of which game to attend. We break down all five matchups, starting with the heavyweight showdown in Class 6A.

6A State Championship: Cleveland Storm (11-1) vs. La Cueva Bears (12-0)

Venue: Wilson Stadium, Albuquerque
All-Time Series in Championships: Cleveland leads 2-1

For the third time in the last three years, the Cleveland Storm and La Cueva Bears meet in the final, continuing a rivalry that has defined Class 6A football in New Mexico. Cleveland has hoisted the blue trophy four times in the last six seasons, while La Cueva is the reigning champion, having defeated Cleveland 35-14 last year. With both teams loaded with star power, this year’s clash promises to be one for the ages.

Cleveland Storm

2024 Season Recap:
The Storm have rolled through the season, with their only blemish coming in a razor-thin loss to Centennial, another undefeated powerhouse. Cleveland’s potent offense averages a staggering 48.0 points per game, led by the dual-threat brilliance of QB Jordan Hatch, who has totaled 174.4 passing yards per game and 185.2 total yards per game. On the ground, RB Juan Munoz has been unstoppable, tallying 89.1 rushing yards per game and leading the team with 10.9 points per game.

Defensively, Cleveland is just as intimidating. The Storm’s front seven has dominated the trenches, with Brendan Cochrane and Riley Haussler anchoring a unit that averages 45.8 tackles per game and 1.8 sacks per game.

Key to Victory:
Control the clock and pressure La Cueva QB Cameron Dyer. Cleveland’s ability to force turnovers and limit explosive plays will be critical.

La Cueva Bears

2024 Season Recap:
The Bears are chasing perfection, entering the title game unbeaten at 12-0. La Cueva’s offense is led by Arizona State commit Cameron Dyer, who has been a maestro under center, flanked by Nebraska-bound linebacker Mason Posa, who dominates on both sides of the ball. RB Cheeto Lumberera III provides balance with his physical running style, while Minnesota commit Mark Handy has been a game-changer on the OL.

La Cueva’s defense is fast, physical, and opportunistic, led by DE Tyson Barela, LB Nick Mertz, and rising OL star Skyler Sargent. The Bears thrive in clutch moments, as evidenced by their 7.0 points per game in overtime situations.

Key to Victory:
Force Cleveland into long-yardage situations and exploit their secondary with Dyer’s passing. The Bears must also capitalize on every red-zone opportunity.

Prediction and Odds

  • Favorite: La Cueva -1.5
  • Over/Under: 83
  • NMPreps Prediction: La Cueva 43, Cleveland 42
  • Grine’s Pick: La Cueva
  • A Johnson's Pick: Cleveland
Why La Cueva Wins: The Bears’ depth of talent, combined with Dyer’s ability to deliver in pressure moments, gives them the slight edge. However, Cleveland’s explosive offense led by Jordan Hatch ensures this will go down to the wire. This game could be decided by a single defensive stand or special teams play.
