What to Watch in Small School Football Week 7

Small School Football in Week 7

Week 7 of the football season is here and we have a few key games to keep a close eye on. With a few weeks left in the season, every game counts.

High Five: Must See Games

Dexter (5-1) at Eunice (4-2), Friday, 7pm: Dexter, ranked 2nd in 3A football will have to make a quick response to dropping their first game of the season last week. Eunice, ranked 4th in 3A football now has the opportunity to make some movement in the classification or have the divide open up. The difference will be the better offense - Dexter averages 27, Eunice 36 - but the x-factor will be fourth quarter play. Both play well in the fourth quarter this season.

Prediction: Dexter 30, Eunice 27

Santa Rosa (1-5) at Texico (0-5), Friday, 7pm: Not very often will you see both of these teams with a combined 1-10 record. Why would we consider this a game to watch this season? Both have a played a schedule among the toughest and this could be a pivot type of game. One thing that we know for sure in this contest is that both can play defense, maybe somewhat under the radar and like to keep games low in scoring when the opportunity comes up. Winner will take a step closer into the playoffs, the loser has plenty of work to do. Santa Rosa (No. 7 3A) only averages 12 points per game, Texico (No. 6 3A) averages 10 points per game.

Prediction: Santa Rosa 20, Texico 18

Raton (4-2) at Clayton (0-5), Friday, 7pm: Another rare case where a team without a win on the season could be favored in a game and also ranked in the Top-10 in 3A football. Raton (No 8 3A) has a big chance to make a name for themselves as they will take on Clayton (No. 5 3A). Raton has been playing well this season averaging 31 points per game, however the difference could be them putting points up against a top team. Socorro ranked in the Top-10 in 4A, they only scored 14 in a loss. Clayton though is not finding the end zone as well averaging 6 points per game. Clayton has played some tough competition against New Mexico teams this season against Fab 50 team West Las Vegas they fell in a close one.

Prediction: Raton 21, Clayton 12

Mountainair (5-1) at Melrose (5-1), Friday, 7pm: 8-man football has our interest this season and this game is one between a newcomer team, Melrose a defending champion. Both teams are not having troubles putting points on the scoreboard averaging, Mountainair averaging 51 and Melrose 47. Mountainair the lesser of the two on the defensive side will need to make stops against one of the most talented offensive teams this season.

Prediction: Melrose 42, Mountainair 38

Gateway Christian (5-0) vs Mesilla Valley Christian (3-1), Friday, 7pm: Gateway the only Fab 50 team from 8-man football will be the favorite even after looking shaky in recent weeks. Mesilla Valley however has question marks (yes you can't compare scores but...) because they dropped to Magdalena 44-42 and GC beat Magdalena 54-0. Those outcomes have some say into the preview of this game.

Prediction: Gateway Christian 44, Mesilla Valley 28

Key boys' games for week of Oct. 3

Huge district games this week.

Tuesday:
Atrisco Heritage (7-4-1, 4-0) at Albuquerque High (8-2-2, 3-1). AHS, the district favorite and ranked No. 3 in 6A, already has a district loss (to Valley), making this basically a must-win game for the Bulldogs. If Atrisco wins, it will have a two-game lead in the district over AHS and Valley.

Valencia (10-3, 2-0) at Los Lunas (6-7, 2-0). Local rivals battle for first place in this district.

Academy (10-2-1, 1-0) at Los Alamos (11-3-1, 1-0). Academy’s district schedule began with its two toughest games, at Capital and now at LA. They took care of the first and can assume control of the district with a win here. Los Alamos hammered Del Norte, 8-0, on Saturday.

Santa Teresa (10-3-1) at Deming (5-8-1). For the top three in this district (ST, Chaparral and Alamogordo), sweeping Deming is mandatory if they want to win the district. Santa Teresa beat Deming earlier this year in a tournament.

La Cueva (10-2, 4-0) at Clovis (7-6, 3-1). ABQ teams don’t travel much – can the Bears handle this mid-week road trip better than Eldorado did? The Wildcats probably have to win this game to have a chance to win the district.

Chaparral (9-3-2) at Alamogordo (9-3-2). Big district opener. Alamogordo is going to know a lot more about how it matches up in 5A by the end of this week.

Thursday:
Volcano Vista (8-3-1, 3-0) at Cleveland (12-2, 1-1). Cleveland dug itself a hole with a loss to Cibola in its district opener, so they need a win here to keep Volcano Vista from taking a commanding lead.

Friday:
Atrisco Heritage at Valley (8-3-1, 3-1). AHA beat Valley 2-1 to open district play – Valley needs to win here to keep pace.

Saturday:
Cleveland at Rio Rancho (7-8, 1-2). Wait, this isn't the Cleveland-Rio Rancho game everyone is talking about this week? The soccer version of the Rams are on the state tournament bubble and really need a big win.

Academy at Farmington (6-5). The Scorps also need a signature win in what otherwise has been a down year by their standards. End of a long week for AA (at Capital, at Los Alamos, vs. Del Norte, at Farmington).

Roswell (11-1-1) at Lovington (5-9). Roswell has lost only one district game since 2012, a surprise loss to a mediocre Lovington team two years ago. Coach Vernon will probably remind his team of that this week.

Alamogordo at Santa Teresa. The Desert Warriors are perfect at home this year.

Hobbs (12-2, 6-1) at Las Cruces (5-6-2, 4-2). Very big game for both teams as they chase Gadsden in the district.

Capital at Los Alamos. Big seeding implications – at the moment this district has three of the top four rated teams in 5A. So where do you seed whoever ends up third? Ahead of district champs or runner-ups from other districts?

Sup Wit The Kyle Disappearing Thing

I have to admit that I rarely come on this site anymore and may have missed some sort of announcement. But it is now obvious that J Grine has assumed the vast majority of the writing duties on NMPreps. Kyle's participation has gotten to be almost as rare as mine. LOL Not that I don't appreciate Grine but Kyle has been the brain and the brawn of this site forever and I find the situation now kind of odd. I am not trying to make any rude remarks of any kind. I am just curious. If I missed some sort of announcement maybe it could be reposted. Thank you.

Week 7: Friday Night Recap

Week 7: Friday Night Recap

The match up of the season took place in Rio Rancho, New Mexico with the number one ranked team and the number two ranked team in the state of New Mexico. Along with a team dropping its first game of the season, a Top-25 scare and a few games that ended early.

More: Top Plays From Week 7 | Most Intriguing Outcome | Rio Rancho over Cleveland

Top 25 Recap
No. 1 Rio Rancho 42, No. 2 Cleveland 28: Josh Foley and the Rio Rancho Rams traveled across town to take on rival Cleveland (6-1) in the District 1-6A opener. The Rams, led by running back Josh Foley's 4-touchdowns pull out the win, 42-28. The night started with a 57-yard touchdown run by Storm quarterback Angelo Trujillo but the Rams answered with a 32-yard touchdown pass from Nic Little to Austin Hise. The Rams went up and never looked back as they stay perfect at 7-0 on the season.

No. 3 Las Cruces 48, No. 25 Hobbs 28: With an early lead the Hobbs Eagles (1-6) looked to have upset minds with a pair of opening touchdown passes from junior quarterback Gavin Hardison. However, the Las Cruces Bulldawgs (6-1) called on their own junior quarterback Payton Ball who had four rushing touchdowns along with a pair of touchdown passes, one to Daniel Escobedo and Ivan Molina, to seal the victory for the Bulldawgs.

No. 5 Artesia 48, No. 23 Alamogordo 35: Much to the theme of the top two games, the Artesia Bulldogs (6-1) found themselves down early in the play clock. Alamogordo (4-3) quarterback Kyle Hooper used a 7-yard TD run, followed by a 3-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Bateman to take an early 12-0 lead. The Artesia Bulldogs however got on the board when Taylor Null connected with Kameron Aguilar for a 5-yard touchdown pass. It would be the Bulldogs for most of the way, after being down 15-14, to control the game. Alamogordo drops it's second consecutive game, the Bulldogs won their second consecutive.

No. 6 Onate 50, No. 20 Carlsbad 0: By some surprise the Onate Knights (5-2) avoided any let down from their historic win last week on their way to a shutout win over Carlsbad (2-5). The Knights had several players reach the end zone but it was the play from Aaron Sanchez who has come alive the last two weeks. Sanchez had a huge 37-yard touchdown run followed by a second half 47-yard touchdown run to top off another prime time performance.

No. 9 Centennial 55, Gadsden 0: The Centennial Hawks improve to (6-1) on the season as they ended the game early.

No. 10 Clovis 28, No. 7 Eldorado 14: The Clovis Wildcats (4-2) needed a big win and taking the opener as a member of District 2-6A with a majority of District members from the Albuquerque Metro Area. The Eldorado Eagles (3-3) pegged with a monster offense didn't show well on their visit to Clovis. Micah Gray had a big play on the night with a 58-yard touchdown run for the Wildcats.

No. 11 Manzano 27, No. 13 La Cueva 14: Several highlights for the Manzano Monarchs (4-2) statement win to opener District 2-6A play. Ryan Moore had an early 99-yard kick off return, Alejandro Vallejos had a 55-yard pick six and we can add a 17-yard touchdown pass from Dakota Powell to Andrew Erickson. The La Cueva Bears (3-3) dropped their first game after returning from a bye week in week 6. Josh Woisin scored a late touchdown in the losing effort for the Bears.

No. 15 St. Pius X 61, Grants 6: Drew Ortiz showed why he is one of the best players in the state of New Mexico after reaching the end zone for a 40-yard touchdown to mention one of his many big plays. The Sartans (6-1) cruised to a 61-6 win over the Grant Pirates (4-3) to open District play on Friday night.

No. 17 Belen 36, Valencia 0: The Belen Eagles (6-1) started the night with a long touchdown pass down the middle of the field and never looked back as they shutout the home team, 36-0. The Valencia Jaguars fall to (1-5) on the season and 0-1 to open district play.

No. 19 Goddard 61, Deming 6: The Goddard Rockets (4-3) move over the .500 mark with an easy win over Deming (0-7) on Friday night.

No. 22 Cibola 21, No. 16 Piedra Vista 0: The Cibola Cougars improve their record to (3-4) with their third straight win on the season after a (0-4) start to their season. TheCougars also start district 1-6A play at 1-0 with the win. Piedra Vista (5-2, 0-1) falls for the second time in a row on the season after a 5-0 start.

Credit Where Credit Is Due - Artesia Broadcasts

If you have not watched any of the free online broadcasts of the Artesia Bulldogs games you are missing out on one of the clearest, most professional and totally free broadcasts in high school football. The only (and I mean only) slight criticism is that they do not use replays. They do refer to off screen replays during the broadcast for clarity and fairness. By the way Joey, if you still have that cough next time try swigging some lemon Airborne during the game. Oh, there was one glitch on second thought...the broadcast abruptly ended with over a minute left in the game. But like you often say during a game "it doesn't matter" because the Los Lunas game was over before the dogpile even took place. LMBO And, don't get me started about the "World Famous Bulldog Bowl" as you also always say. But just out of morbid curiosity folks, do a google earth of the Los Lunas stadium versus the Bulldog Bowl and the Hobbs stadium. I mean really...Hobbs entities have amassed about 70 million dollars (cash, land for services swap, etc) for a world class recreational/athletics facility now under construction and Los Lunas cannot scrap up a few hundred thousand to help out their situation. Come on people. Your kids are important too. Anyway, congrats to the Bulldogs and to Joey!
