Swing Games: Important Games That Will Dictate Season

Yes, you play the next game and that is all that is on your mind - if you are a coach or player. Well, we do what we love to do and predict the season. Today, we look forward in the season and the games that could be the make or break game.

The swing game could be a "bubble game" or a game that could ultimately break the team or send them on a trend up.

Carlsbad vs Cibola
Date: September 17th
Why: The Cougars host the Cavemen in week four and both teams could be in the same position at this time. They both play the top districts in football, Cibola in 1-6A and Carlsbad in 3-6A. Both are not predicted to win their district and need any must win games that they can have. For Carlsbad this game could have a decent chance at putting them at 3-1 or 2-2 entering District play. Either going in with momentum or entering a tough four game stretch with loss. Cibola could use this game to be in the same situation at 3-1 or 2-2. Cibola will have a better chance to recover after this game but any must win game matters after the dust settles in District play.

Manzano vs Piedra Vista
Date: October 1st
Why: Both teams are in the make or break situation that we continue to use. However, this game will serve as a "good" win if they finish around the same slot entering the selection committee meeting. Manzano plays a difficult schedule but this win could ultimately put them over .500. Looking at Piedra Vista, in the best case scenario, this game could also be in the difference of being 6-4 or 5-5.

Onate vs Sandia
Date: September 9th
Why: Looking at our feature on best/worst case scenario both teams are in our 6-4/7-3 range. Both teams are also in that situation of how good are you going to be in 2016? Sandia is playing the way too underrated with a 15th ranking in the Spring Rankings. Onate is playing the dark horse as the 9th ranked Spring team with athletes. This game could set up for a great situation and possible put Onate (predicting wise) in a 2-1 record heading into a game against Rio Rancho. This game could bring plenty of momentum to the Matadors as they, predicting again, could set them up to be 3-0 heading into a winnable game against Cibola.

September 9th Games To Consider

• Rio Rancho vs Clovis: It was close last season and the Wildcats welcome the Rams to Clovis.
• Mayfield vs Eldorado: Who's better? Eldorado ranked 3rd, Mayfield 4th. Many say Eldo too high along with Mayfield should be No. 1?
• Volcano Vista vs West Mesa: Possible upset alert for West Mesa. Both need this game.
• Valley vs Alamogordo: Will Valley return with a quality win here to boost their resume or fall to one of the top team in 5A?

How Isaac Vance Can Win The Mr. Football Award

Today, we start to look at the top players in the state of New Mexico and candidates for the top award - NMPreps.com Mr. Football Award.



Isaac Vance entered the 2015 season with a stat explosion of 361-yards and 4-touchdowns in the opening weekend. Ranked as the top players returning from the 2017 class in the NMPreps.com Top-60 Players returning in 6A football. Vance went on to have an outstanding season, but what does he need to do to win the NMPreps.com Mr. Football award this season?

The obvious, he's a running back. Only two positions have won the award 8 quarterbacks and 2 running backs. Using those two running backs as our standard stick in the statical aspect he has a realstic chance of winning the award.

Past RB Winners
2013 - JJ Granados, Las Cruces: 2,069-yards and 40 Touchdowns for a 12-1 team State Champion Team.
2009 - Ronnie Daniels, La Cueva: 2,261-yards and 38-touchdowns for a 12-1 team State Champion Team.

Huge numbers to live up to but if we recap last season he falls in line with the two RB winners already as he totaled for 2,200-rushing years last season. In, the opening two games of the season he totaled 608-yards and if memory serves me correct Vance missed a few games due to injury, so the total could have been higher.

Next, the big number is lighting up the scoreboard. Both winners had 38 and 40 touchdowns. Vance had 30 last season but remind you that he missed a few games.

The last thing on the line could come in the form of leading the team late into the post season and becoming a state champion. So a little assistants from his teammates in getting this team some wins. A near to perfect season will due but a state title could be the barrier.

So let's give a projection of 2,250 rushing yards, 39 touchdowns, plus 10 wins and a state championship or runner up could win the award for the stud running back who was ranked No. 1 last season. He had the rushing yards last season but needs to achieve that mark again, maybe a little over it, in 2016. Maybe it comes down to a state title.

Metro Passing League - Week 1 - Thursday

Today, we continue to highlight the games at the Metro Passing League held each Tuesday and Thursday at Highland High School in Albuquerque, NM.

Tuesday we seen a few prospects rise on our radar along with a few new to the radar. Today, we continue to bring big names and maybe a few new ones for the 2016 season.

Notes From Thursday

We watched the first games on the day of action this afternoon and we seen separation of top teams and maybe lower tier programs. Some are clicking while others might be just lacing their cleats for the season.

St. Pius X was rolling on all cylinders as they played Atrisco Heritage in the opening game. Top performer on the day played on the defensive end tonight and was a linebacker for the Sartans in 6-foot-2 Adrian Leon. Also, playing well was the Rio Rancho Rams where talent is deep, where most players could be listed today. Cibola and Valley battled in a high energy contest.

Adrian Leon - St. Pius X (Albuquerque, NM)
Senior/6-foot-2/210
Leon, was a named not mentioned among top LB's earlier this summer but that is all forgotten as the 6-foot-2 Linebacker completely dominated in the opening game. He edges out a defensive teammate today for the award of Top Performer. Leon edged Schull (listed below) by the fact that Leon was also catching passes for the Sartans.



Austin Schull - St. Pius X (Albuquerque, NM)
Senior/MLB/6-foot-1/225
If you haven't seen Schull, the Middle Linebacker for the Sartans then you have another thing coming. The 225, 6'1 prospect is on the rise. Very smart player and on each play but loved how vocal he was directing his team.



Tyler Spencer - Rio Rancho HS (Rio Rancho, NM)
Senior/CB/5-foot-7/150
Keeping the Thursday theme on the defensive end of the ball to start of the top performers Spencer had a ball on just about anything thrown into his yard.



Jonathan Sierra - Valley HS (Albuquerque, NM)
Senior/WR/5-foot-7/125
Making some key highlight catches for the Vikings was Sierra another prospect hitting the radar and one to watch during the new era for head coach Judge Chavez.



Drew Ortiz - St. Pius X (Albuquerque, NM)
Senior/QB/5-foot-11/180
The best quarterback out today is Drew Ortiz who is the number two ranked player returning in 5A football for the 2017 class. Ortiz proved it connecting over and over with his receivers.



Need Info: Not a super flashy WR, but caught everything that went his way and what more could you ask for. He made big plays when they were need.



Cameron Herrera - Manzano HS (Albuquerque, NM)
Junior/MLB/6-foot/190
The junior was one of the top overall players on the day for the Monarchs, he is a yes sir type of prospect that is a work horse. Will be nice to see his development the next two seasons.



Deshawn Lee Hope Christian HS (Albuquerque, NM)
Senior/WR/5-foot-9/150
The best playmaker for the Huskies on the day, Lee was the main target and for good reason. Solid hands and a two way player, also a linebacker for the Huskies.



Nic Little - Rio Rancho HS (Rio Rancho, NM)
Senior/QB/6-foot-1/185
Little transitioned to QB after playing WR last season. He seemed to be in a battle for the starting slot but hands down the second best QB on the entire day.



Valentine Morris - Atrisco Heritage Academy (Albuquerque, NM)
Senior/WR-DL/6-foot-1/190
I don't know what I liked more on Valentine. He played well on offense - showed he had good hands - or that he was the best defender for his team. Also, what's not to like with a name like Valentine Morris. Another respectable young man.

It is the week before the official start of practice, which means it is time for what I find to be a bothersome practice: the "non-mandatory" pre-tryout camp for a price.

Some schools in Albuquerque (I don't know about elsewhere), hold a paid "camp" the week before tryouts for high school age players. In my mind, it is a way to extend tryouts from one week to two, and extract money from the students in the process. The NMAA doesn't regulate summer activities, leaving it up to the school districts, other than stating that summer participation cannot be a requirement for participation in the regular season. APS says only that participation in summer programs may not be made mandatory.

I'm sure the coaches will tell you that the paid pre-tryout camp is not mandatory and does not affect how they choose their teams. I'm just as sure that parents and players (especially incoming 9th-graders) will tell you that they think missing the camp would be held against them, or at least would hurt their chances of making a team, and feel compelled to pony up for the camp.

This came up on the soccer board, which is a bit of a ghost town, so I am asking football parents here: how much do you pay for your son to be on a team at a public high school?

What I mean is, how much do you pay to your school's booster club, or otherwise, during the course of the season? Is there a minimum contribution, or do you have to fund-raise a certain amount? How much do you have to pay for banquet tickets or end-of-season gifts? Or anything else? Where does the money go?

If you want to identify the school, great; if not, that's fine also. I am curious if APS parents pay more or less than in other parts of the state.

Rio Rancho Running Back Josh Foley was offered by West Texas AM recently. Eastern, Highlands, Western, and CSU Publeo have also offered the 5-foot-10, 190 pound running back.

Candidates: How Josh Foley Can Win The Mr. Football Award?

Today, we start to look at the top players in the state of New Mexico and candidates for the top award - NMPreps.com Mr. Football Award.



Josh Foley, joins the first player we have on our NMPreps.com Mr. Football candidate list, looking to become the third running back to win the award. Foley, ran out the gates last season with a 3-touchdown opening game to the 2015 season on 125-yards (9.5 average). Let us not forget his season high 208-yard, 3-touchdown game against Las Cruces High School.

Past RB Winners

2009 - Ronnie Daniels, La Cueva: 2,261-yards and 38-touchdowns for a 12-1 team State Champion Team.

Those numbers will be hard to live up too, especially for Foley who had games he would carry 20 times, then 9. Touches will be important for him but consistency will also be the determining factor. Had a decent stretch of touches and going over 100-yards, including the 208-yard game.

Yes, some may say "only" 1,081-yards last season for Foley. However, this young man played for a team that had a QB that had over 2,000-yards passing. They will air it out but Foley will have the opportunity to get his. Let's be honest, he can't have those dip games of 60-yards this year if he wants to stay in consideration. Most winners have that stat that sticks out. Getting closer to 2,000-yards will matter. 1,700-yards might be a standard stick.

Now to touchdowns, this is that stat that I've talked about, in winning the award. The past two RB winners had 40 and 38. Foley, had 15-touchdowns last season and might need a boost in this department. Over 20-touchdowns could be a must to be considered in the candidate race. Especially, with other RB's that will be on this list that could go for 30 plus.

The plus side that Foley will have over many candidates is that Foley plays for the preseason No. 1 team in the state of New Mexico in the Rio Rancho Rams. Winning a state championship only helps the case and this could be the return for the 2014 state champs who also had a Mr. Football winner.

Here we go, an undefeated season capped with a State Title. At the least 1,700-rushing yards, 23-touchdowns and consistently over 100-yards rushing each game. The task is tall but for prospects like Foley who have high expectations he could live up to it.

Cole Maxwell who moved to Allen, TX after his 8th grade year I believe has committed to UNM for baseball. Cole is 6'5 240 and was also being recruited for DI football (Navy, Army, SMU, Houston and others). Cole is a legit 2 way guy and is playing for DBAT 17s in the CMWS.

Albuquerque, New Mexico - The North All-Stars rolled Wednesday Night over the South 38-13 in front of 2,000 fans at Nusenda Community Stadium.

The North All-Stars jumped to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter after Eldorado Quarterback Jayce Jackson hooked up with Valley's Elijah Naranjo for a 40-yard score. Volcano Vista Quarterback Josh Williams would then hit Naranjo on a 82-yard touchdown to make it 14-0.

After the North forced a South Punt, Williams a standout from Volcano Vista who told us after the game he's walking on at UNM scored on a quarterback keeper from 10-yards out to make it 21-0 in the first quarter.

The South would get on the board in the second quarter when Artesia Quarterback Justin Houghtaling threw a touchdown pass, followed by Daulton Hatley of Clovis who threw a touchdown to Artesia's Carlos Carrasco to make it 21-13. Just before half, Sandia's Jimmy Gallegos hit a 35-yard field goal to make it 24-13 at the break.

The North came out firing threw the air, Williams hooked up with Naranjo again and in the 4th quarter Williams scored his 4th touchdown of the night off a short touchdown run to make the final 38-13.
