Team Preview: Aztec Tigers
Joshua J Grine of NMPreps.com

2016 Early Outlook: The Aztec Tigers went 4-7 under Head Coach Matt Steinfeldt during the 2015 season losing to the Roswell Coyotes 52-14 in the first round of the 5A playoffs. Returning for the 2016 season is Quarterback Cody Smith at 6-foot-1, 205 pounds. As a sophomore last year Smith threw for 2,841-yards and 25 touchdowns. The Tigers graduate 5 of their top receivers, look for Justin Black at receiver at 5-foot-11, 175 pounds to step up. At linebacker Brady Moffett a 6-foot-1, 225 pound Class of 2017 prospect recorded 122 tackles last year also watch for Jaxon Hathcock at 6-foot-0, 195 pounds. Up front Offensive linemen Tyler Roberson at 6-foot-2, 255 pounds is noted as a top returner. View the rest of the Top 50 Countdown.

Team Overview
Head Coach: Matthew Steinfeldt
2015 Record: 4-7, 3-1
2015 Post Season: Lost, First Round to Roswell, 52-14.
Top Prospect Returning on Offense: Cody Smith, QB/Jr
Top Prospect Returning on Defense: Brady Moffett, LB/Sr

2016 Schedule Outlook
8/26 - Los Lunas
9/2 - Durango, Colorado
9/9 - at Bayfield, Colorado
9/16 - at Piedra Vista
9/24 - Cobre
10/7 - Kirtland Central
10/14 - at Bloomfield
10/21 - at Farmington
10/28 - Gallup
11/4 - Miyamura

Over/Under: 6.5

Pick: Under. Tigers don't take this personal. Well, maybe throw it on the bulletin. The opening four games (maybe 5) are difficult. Los Lunas is dominate, Durango went 10-2 and Bayfield went 12-0. Yes, that was last season but some solid openers and then Piedra Vista will be one of the best teams in the state this season after reaching the semi-finals last season. Good news, the district won't be extremely difficult and that is where they can get W's with Farmington the only team atop the rest who can fight for second. Note: from the feature Over/Under. View the rest of 5A Schedules.

2016 Strength

12. Aztec - Linebackers

Brady Moffert, the 6-foot-1, 200 pound Linebacker is one of the top names to know in 5A football overall as he led the team in tackles with a whopping 122 total on the season, 59 solo. Kyler Duggins another season is another senior Linebacker that brings plenty to the table for the Tigers. At 6-foot-1 and 175 pounds Duggins had 66-total tackles and 4-sacks last season. The up and coming name is senior Brandon Trennepohl, 5-foot-8, who had 55-total tackles to create a triple force at the LB core. Read the rest of the feature on 5A Strengths.

Playoff Hopes

Aztec Tigers (4-7): Buy

The district has a shake-up, one that favors the Tigers. Gone is Piedra Vista who reached the semi-finals last season and a team that will be a force in it's new classification. The Tigers now return some talent as mentioned in the NMPreps.com Top 50 Countdown as they come in ranked 39th in the state of New Mexico. I say buy now as they could be an under-the-radar buy low with a big payout type of team. Cody Smith is the QB and as a sophomore he passed for 2,841-yards. Chris Campbell - La Cueva - QB - 5-foot-11, 180 - Think Chris is going to be one of the better quarterbacks that the Bears have had in years. Super athletic, can't believe one of the smaller in-state schools has not offered him. 4.39 shuttle, 9-feet-2 broad, great ball.

Christian Bewster - Los Lunas - 5-foot-7, 151 - Los Lunas as you know is going to have some ballers this year, Brewster is one to add. He was named the DB MVP and had 16 reps of 185 pounds, ran a 4.28 shuttle, and had a broad of 8-feet-9 inches.

Dillon Gassoway - Volcano Vista - QB - 6-foot-2, 210 pounds - Big kid, throws well, 16 reps of 185 pounds and plays the leadership role well. He'll have some big time targets to throw to this year.

Dominic Fischer - West Mesa - WR - 6-foot-2, 172 - West Mesa likely has two next level guys from this year's roster and one of them is Fischer who can player either QB or WR. Good size, possession type WR and had a broad of 8-feet-6 inches and also did well in the one-on-one's.

Donald Truez - Roswell - OL - 5-foot-10, 241 - Nice showing at the event, did not know about him prior to the event, but he did well in the one-on-one's and had 20 reps of 185 pounds. Great name as well.

Evan Tayfoya-Vallo - Rio Rancho - OL - 6-foot-4, 275 - Think he is under the radar recruiting wise, could even be a sleeper D1 guy. Very good in passing blocking drills, one-on-ones.

Fernando Acosta - Clovis - DL - 6-foot-0, 200 - Quite the motor, very quick off the football, one of Clovis' top prospects and a next level D2 range guy. 22 reps of 185 pounds, 4.72 40-time and 4.25 shuttle.

Forest McKee - Onate - LB - 6-foot-0, 225 - Pound for pounds the best defensive athlete at the event. 28 reps of 185 pounds, 4.54 40-time, 4.25 shuttle, and 9-feet-1 inch broad. No idea why he does not have offers, but this kid has a ton of heart, great character, is a coach's son, a leader, and is straight talented. Reminds me of Sam Denmark, expect McKee is better.

Gabe Sidwell - Onate - DL - 5-foot-10, 190 - 16 reps of 185 pounds, 4.85 40-time and a 8-feet-4 inch broad jump.

Gannon Chavez - Cibola - QB - 5-foot-11, 170 - Don't think a lot of people know how good Chavez is going to be this year, him and Kayzan Martin from Cibola are gamers. Chavez had a 4.6 shuttle and a 8-feet-3 broad jump.

Gasper Hernandez - Rio Grande - ATH - 6-foot-2, 180 - Good looking athlete and it was nice to see some kids from Rio Grade compete, we hadn't had many in the past. 4.6 shuttle and a 8-feet-3 inch broad jump.

Gaven Swinson - Mayfield - WR - 6-foot-4, 200 - What a dynamic performance he had during the event. When the coaches got together to determine the MVP, it was easy. Everyone said Swinson. Dazzling routes, great hands, good speed, great kid, coachable. Ran a 4.5 40-time, 4.31 shuttle, and had a broad jump of 10-feet-1/2 inches. STUD.

Gavin Hardison - Hobbs - QB - 6-foot-3, 170 - Class of 2018 quarterback that can straight spin it. Lots of power, throws well on the run and athletic. 4.6 40-time, 4.5 shuttle, and a broad of 9-feet-0.

. Aztec QB Cody Smith, only a sophomore for the Tigers last season passed for an impressive 2,841 yards. Smith will be one of the top returning quarterbacks for the 2018 class along with a very underrated District 1-5A. The Tigers are ranked in the Top-50 this preseason and looking to improve that ranking this season.

Over/Under: Win Totals in 4A Football
Joshua J Grine of NMPreps.com

Today, we look at some over/under numbers as it pertains to wins and losses. 4A football has a complete shake up as many new teams enter the classification during the current realignment.

BERNALILLO SPARTANS

Over/Under:
2

2016 Schedule
8/26 - at Moriarty
9/2 - Gallup
9/10 - at Albuquerque Academy
9/16 - Bloomfield
9/23 - at Robertson
9/30 - St. Michael's
10/7 - at Pojoaque Valley
10/14 - at West Las Vegas
10/21 - Santa Fe Indian
11/4 - Taos

Pick: Under. 2 doesn't seem like a "big" number to the most of you but the Spartans are coming off an 0-10 season. The good news it was their last in 5A football as they dip into 4A. The bad news. They went 0-2 against 4A competition, losing (37-0) to Taos and (45-0) to Hope Christian last season. The schedule seems to have become tougher this year than last year. If they get to 1, it could be against Santa Fe Indian (maybe).

HATCH VALLEY BEARS

Over/Under: 8

2016 Schedule
8/26 - Taos
9/2 - Ruidoso
9/16 - Benson, Arizona
9/30 - Chaparral
10/7 - Pampa, Texas (at NMMI)
10/14 - Socorro
10/21 - at Silver
10/28 - Cobre
11/4 - at Hot Springs
TBA - 1 Game

Pick: Par. 8-games after a 13-0, State Championship could either be too low or too high for you. I sort of buying on head coach Jack Cisco who has this team dominating. The negative is they graduate a ton of talent from last season. Cade Hackey, one of the top receivers returns, but they lose a lot on both sides of the ball. Right now, playoffs included I could see 8-wins but it is hard to gauge tow out of state games and how good Cobre and Ruidoso will be (Im projecting good).

NAVAJO PREP EAGLES

Over/Under: 5

2016 Schedule
8/26 - at Kirtland Central
9/2 - at Montezuma-Cortez, Colorado
9/9 - Laguna-Acoma
9/16 - at Pinon, Arizona
9/23 - Socorro
9/30 - Window Rock
10/8 - Cleveland JV
10/21 - at Thoreau
10/28 - Wingate
11/4 - at Shiprock

Pick: Over. The Eagles of Navajo Prep move UP in classification from 3A football. The task could seem difficult but the schedule strength is not overwhelming. The district won't be daunting like others moving UP. They have a junior QB in Dakota Halliburton that passed for 2,846-yards as a sophomore with 27 passing TDs. 5 games that I pick, if I'm picking, from New Mexico is Socorro, Thoreau and Wingate. A date with Pinon, Arizona who went 2-8 last season along with Montezuma-Cortez, Colorado who went 2-7 last season would be my five right now. The Socorro game could be a reach but a new head coach they could sneak up on them with the air attack. We know I like to reach, so I could - I did - even see an "upset" over Laguna-Acoma who is under new tutelage as well. I guess I'm sold on the air attack but my only concern is a new head coach.

POJOAQUE VALLEY ELKS

Over/Under: 2

2016 Schedule
8/26 - at Los Alamos
9/2 - at Hot Springs
9/9 - Espanola Valley
9/16 - Escalante
9/23 - at West Las Vegas
9/29 - at Santa Fe Indian
10/7 - Bernalillo
10/14 - St. Michael's
10/28 - Taos
11/4 - at Robertson

Pick: Par. The Elks went 0-10 last season but what could you truly expect with a team that had 6-seniors on the roster. The Elks are sure to come back more experienced and ready to shake (crack) the goose egg. The schedule is in better shape than last season for a young team. They replace Portales, Bloomfield and Ruidoso with Hot Springs and Escalante in non-district games (2 less non-district games with new district). The new district also features Bernalillo and Santa Fe Indian to lessen the blows. The Elks will take strides this season but 2 wins could be the ceiling.

PORTALES RAMS

Over/Under: 8

2016 Schedule
8/26 - Texico
9/2 - at Lovington
9/9 - at West Las Vegas
9/16 - St. Michael's
9/23 - Dexter
9/30 - at Española Valley
10/7 - Hope Christian
10/21 - at Ruidoso
10/28 - Moriarty
11/4 - at NMMI

Pick. Par. The Rams went 11-1 last season having some major talent. They graduate a top running back from last season but return a wealth of talent. The only reason we say par is duplicating an 11-win will be tough. The schedule favors them to go over 8 but played it safe going PAR right now. Depending on playoff match-up they could easily go over 8. Teams that could be a challenge to winning 8 of 10 is Lovington, Ruidoso, St. Mikes and newcomer to 4A from 5A in Moriarty who had a successful campaign last season.

RUIDOSO WARRIORS

Over/Under: 6

2016 Schedule
8/26 - at Roswell
9/2 - at Hatch Valley
9/9 - Lovington
9/16 - at Robertson
9/23 - Tularosa
9/30 - Silver
10/7 - NMMI
10/15 - at Hope Christian
10/21 - Portales
11/4 - at Moriarty

Pick: Over. After winning the state championship in 2014, the Warriors had a slump season finishing 5-7. The Warriors had some inexperience during the 2015 campaign after losing veterans from the title team who built the foundation. The good news from the 2015 season is the fact that they return a wealth of skill position players. Returning is quarterback Kyle Woodul (2017) who passed for 1,916-yards last season along with Cisco Mayville (2017) who ran for 1,317-yards. The schedule won't be easy but a good mixture of games. They will be tested early as they face Roswell, ranked 27th this preseason opening weekend along with the 4A defending champ Hatch Valley Bears during week two. We say over with a possible 6-4 season with a win in the playoffs at the very least but a 5-5 season with a possible 2-game win post season is possible as well.

SANTA FE INDIAN BRAVES

Over/Under: 5

2016 Schedule
8/26 - Cuba
9/1 - Wingate
9/10 - at McCurdy
9/23 - at Taos
9/29 - Pojoaque Valley
10/6 - West Las Vegas
10/14 - at Robertson
10/21 - at Bernalillo
10/27 - St. Michael's

The Pick: Under. The Braves went 5-4 last season for a successful season as an independent school. Reaching 5-wins will be difficult this season as they move into a District (2-4A) with the likes of some quality teams. They only played 9-games last season and looks to be the same story this season giving them only three non-district games. 3-games that they can win along with maybe getting a district win along the way but my guess is 3-wins is the ceiling.

SHIPROCK CHIEFTAINS

2016 Schedule
8/26 - at Socorro
9/2 - at Newcomb
9/9 - Dolores, Colorado
9/16 - Gallup
9/23 - Kirtland Central
9/30 - at Cuba
10/7 - Crownpoint
10/21 - Wingate
10/28 - at Thoreau
11/4 - Navajo Prep

Over/Under: 5

Pick: Over. Shiprock is not known for the football team in basketball country. However, this season we could see the Chieftains over .500. The schedule is not difficult, graduate 8-players and will play in a district that could be won. The prediction in 6-4.

THOREAU HAWKS

2016 Schedule
8/26 - Tohatchi
9/2 - at Laguna-Acoma
9/9 - Gallup
9/16 - at Newcomb
9/23 - Crownpoint
9/30 - at Hot Springs
10/7 - Moriarty
10/21 - Navajo Prep
10/28 - Shiprock
11/4 - at Wingate

Over/Under: 5

Pick: Under. I was surprised to see the win total of Thoreau at 5 last season. In this region of the state a .500 season is something to enjoy. They'll return 29-players off the 5-win team but they improve their schedule is the only reason we say under 5-wins. They add Gallup, Laguna-Acoma and Moriarty to their schedule. If they get to 5-wins against this season this will be a huge movement in this football teams direction.

WEST LAS VEGAS DONS

8/26 - at Clayton
9/2 - Grants
9/9 - Portales
9/17 - at Albuquerque
9/23 - Pojoaque Valley
10/6 - at Santa Fe Indian
10/14 - Bernalillo
10/21 - at Taos
10/28 - Robertson
11/5 - at St. Mikes

Over/Under: 5

Pick: Under. West Las Vegas finished the 2015 season 3-2 to end the season 4-6. Getting to .500 or more however could be a task that might be out of the picture in this prediction feature. They graduate some of their best athletes and will have gain experience on the go. The schedule is a good mixture of winnable games filtered with tough games. The prediction for the Dons is 3-7.

WINGATE BEARS

2016 Schedule
8/26 - Crownpoint
9/1 - at Santa Fe Indian
9/17 - Raton
9/23 - Monument Valley, Arizona
9/30 -Tohatchi
10/7 - Whitehorse, Utah
10/14 - at Zuni
10/21 - at Shiprock
10/28 - at Navajo Prep
11/4 - Thoreau

Over/Under: 3

Pick: Under. The Bears opened the 2015 season with a 32-8 win over Crownpoint. However, that would be the only win on the year finishing 1-9. The Bears with only 29-players on the roster only graduate 5 of those players. The Bears football program however hasn't been over .500 in a few years and are 10-28 in the last four football seasons. Our prediction is that it will be better than last season and we could see a 2-8 season.

Note: This feature will be updated daily with new schedules and over/under predictions.

Are we there yet???

Why yes, yes we are! IT'S FOOTBALL TIME!!!

As we get into August the time for high school football is upon us, and for a whole lot of folks it couldn't get here soon enough. The summer months fly by for students, but for the football junkies it seems to drag out every year as the anticipation grows. Two-a-days are now going strong. The sun is shining brightly, the young men and their coaches are working hard and sweating even harder, and the men, women, and kids alike of the towns across the country and our great state are talking about this years team. For even the casual fan, football season is a great time of the year. In most every NM town, those with 6 man football all the way to those with big 6A schools, the fan bases are getting ready for the Friday Night Lights or in some cases Wednesday, Thursday, or even Saturday night lights. Why is that you ask? Because football is KING and it is the greatest time of the year!!!

In my experience in Artesia, there is not much like it. The entire town begins to come alive with talk of this years team starting in late June, early Jul. Everywhere I go, I am asked by all walks of life, "How are we going to do this year?" or "Are we going to 3-peat?". I mean everywhere, from the grocery store to the bank, from church to the gas station, Artesian's are wondering, talking, dreaming, and looking forward to the hamburger fry and scrimmage and especially the first game of the season against Carlsbad. This Bulldog/Caveman game takes on somewhat of a new meaning this year as it will be the first game of the season. The game is one of the longest rivalry games, if not the longest, in the state of NM and there is absolutely no love lost between these to Eddy county cities.

This year the Cavemen come in with huge expectations and with their second year head coach in Coach Gary Bradley who is from an amazing football coaching lineage. Carlsbad has these expectations with good reason as they have the athletes, the coaching, and the community support that would drive any high school deep into the playoffs. I am sure that the Carlsbad football fans are doing the exact same thing that we are doing in Artesia and that is looking forward to not only the big rivalry game on opening night at the Bulldog Bowl, but having a tremendously successful season.

On the other side, the Bulldogs now have a new Henderson (Rex) at the helm, but have the exact same expectations that they have every single year. For some schools the expectations are to get to 500, some is to have a winning season, others expect to make the playoffs while still others expect a win or two in the playoffs, but for Artesia there is only one expectation and that is a state championship. Getting there is not enough. The players, coaches, and the entire community fully expect to win a state title every year. This of course puts a tremendous amount of pressure on the team, but each and every year the young men who put the solid orange helmets on seem to rise above the pressure and do their very best to make the expectation a reality.

Take a moment and share your stories about your team and the excitement that you feel each year as the season gets ready to start. Maybe some rituals the fan or the team goes through, or something the entire town does for home and or away games. NMPreps Nation would love to hear from supporters of their team from all over our great state. Share away and lets all get even more excited for the games to begin!!!

One Of The World's Rarest Moments Today...

The Grand Matron of our enormous extended family just received her 6th living generation this morning on July 13th, 2016. She is my mother and she lives in Hobbs, NM. The baby was born in Dallas, Texas. My Mom is only 90 years old which makes this even more rare. The few Great, Great, Great Grandmothers are typically in there late 90's or 100's. Interestingly, there has only been one 7th generation Grand Matron and that event happened when she was 107. I asked Mom this morning if she wanted to be a 7th living generation at 107. Her response was...I just want to live one day at a time. She is an amazing and very beautiful lady who still gets her hair and nails done every week. She also dresses up everyday like she is going to church in full makeup and jewelry even if she does not leave the house. Her motto is to live everyday like it is your last and make sure that you look good doing it. LOL It has been a difficult past 48 hours. We were notified yesterday that the baby had passed one day prior to it's due date and that they were scheduling the retrieval. Mom was broken hearted for sure. And then they located a heart beat and it was born this morning. Miracles do happen.

Small School Division Football - 8-Man/6-Man

Small School Division Football - 8-Man/6-Man
Joshua J Grine of NMPreps.com

With 6-Man the focus comes in the form of the two-time defending champions and possible dynasty if they can make this three in a row. The same story line can be said for Melrose as their dynasty is almost written in stone as they return as a favorite without question.

Today, we attempt to give our expert opinion on a pair of classifications that have two strong programs, one that even made the NMPreps.com Top 50 Rankings with the Buffaloes of Melrose, an impressive achievement in its own.

5 Key Questions About Small School Division Football

1. 3 and then 4 next season for Melrose? No, we don't hand out State Tournament trophies in July but Melrose the back-to-back state champions have one of the top overall athletes in the state of New Mexico returning giving Buffalo nation something to be excited about. Melrose in two years have a record of 24-1 (13-0 in 2016) and looking to only be getting better. We will spend more time talking about the young man by the name of Cade Barnard, who will play past High School football, as the QB/LB at 6-foot-3, 200 pounds had over 20 touchdowns last season and could only be getting better. Only a junior Cade is excelling both on the grass field and hardwood.

2. Hondo Valley Continuing Its Own Dominance? 9-teams, being better than 8, wins you a state championship in 6-man football. Hondo Valley is the team that has to be the likely favorite as a two-time defending champion to make it a triple behind the athleticism of Antonio Vasquez who threw for 201-yards and rushed for 156-yards for 5 touchdowns in the 2015 state championship. I guess the question should be, can any team slow down the speedy athlete? Floyd could be the likely suitor to play spoiler as they have some athletes of their own returning. However, if I was a betting man (I am), I go with the dominance continues.

3. Is There a Dark Horse? 8-man football could have a team that fits the description as another prospect out there has us with clear eyes looking at Jorrell Mirabal who plays for Magdalena. Mirabal, a talented prospect on the field and basketball court like Barnard, also from the 2018 graduating class, had an impressive 1,500 all purpose yards and 20 touchdowns last season. The Steers will need some surrounding players to overcome the depth of Melrose athletes but that's why we love the term Dark Horse. The other team that we need to use loosely as a dark horse is the team that fell in the state championship last season the Gateway Christian Warriors who lost a key player to graduation but return a few that we will keep a close eye on. Quarterback Justin Reynolds who played well as a sophomore last season and had a great showing in the state championship.

4. What Newcomers Do We Need To Keep An Eye On? Do we need to give more love and attention to small school football, probably. Do we need more updates on Small School football, yes. However, we do hope to see some of these prospects show there worth at the NMPreps.com combine next week. In short here is a quick few view of players we have on our board. Brian Garcia, another 2018 prospect, plays QB for Animas. He three for 355-yards last season but the program could be trending in the right direction. Garcia, played well in two contest against good opponents, 118-yards in a win over Floyd (42-30) and 91-yards un a loss to Hondo Valley (42-26). The other prospect on our board is Austin Buurma, a senior running back, who ran for 1,383-yards last season with 8 touchdowns. He also passed for 255-yards on the season.

5. How Good Will Mesilla Valley Christian Be? The Son Blazers drop down in classification during this realignment. What does that mean? A challenger from the start. I won't stop there as this team has some serious swagger entering 8-man football with a handful of returning talent. They have changed head coaches, out is Michael Draper and in enters Juan Salas. Why so high on the Son Blazers, Grine? Well, if they return some prospect they could be ready to make an early impact on the classification. They had a freshman QB last season pass for 1,572-yards with 7-touchdown passes in Josh Castillo. He does lose he number one target but returns senior Jarret Coyle (259-yards) and junior Brock Maddox (139-yards). The juicy part is the defense where they return Tyler Franzoy who had 94-total sacks, Brock Maddox had 91-total tackles and Tate Wassner who had 81-total tackles. So is it too early to say Melrose, here is your contender. Will any other team emerge to make them a pretender? Add in Joshua Mitchell who was reported to have an offer from Western New Mexico, the 6'5'' OT/NG will be a monster in 8-man this season.
