Combine Related - Feedback Needed

There is a strong possibility that we will be working with Outback Steakhouse in Las Cruces during the weekend of the NMPreps Elite Combine.

The 9th annual event is Friday Night July 22nd and for those that have been in the past registration before the event can be cumbersome. To off-set this, we are trying to work this out: Hold a media day/on-site registration Thursday July 21st at Outback Steakhouse in Las Cruces from 10AM-2PM.

Athletes and their families who are registered or need to sign up that day, can come in to Outback, eat, get out of the heat, take care of registration, and also visit the media area where they will be interviewed, etc.

What are your thoughts or ideas?

Cleveland Storm Night of Champions

Recap: Cleveland Storm Night of Champions

RIO RANCHO, NEW MEXICO - Thursday night inside of the Cleveland Storm Football Stadium, the Storm held their end of the spring Night of Champions. More than 250 spectators watched more than 100 Cleveland Storm football players go for their best marks in the Bench Press, Squat, and Hang Clean.

“This night of champions is a culmination of our spring, it’s what we do, and it’s an opportunity for our athletes to show what they have been working on all spring. We invite our parents, our fans, and we get a lot of support from the community, getting 200-300 people out here to watch the kids it really helps and without that support our program would not be what it is,” Said Head Cleveland Football Coach Heath Ridenour.

The Storm won the Class 6A State Football Championship during the 2015 season going a perfect 13-0 and graduate five players who will be playing college football come the fall. Thursday Night there were plenty of new names that should continue to hold the rope for a program that is quickly becoming tops in New Mexico.

Who Impressed?

The event ended with Sean Davis who is Cleveland’s nose guard at 5-foot-10 and 265 pounds hang cleaning a new school record of 405 pounds. Davis also set a school record for bench with 350 pounds.

Also hitting the school record of 350 pounds on bench press was Daimon Altamirano, Cleveland’s 6-foot-5, 285 pound offensive tackle who is being recruited by a handful of programs including the University of New Mexico. Altamirano was a member of three team state championships this year in football, wrestling, and track.

6-foot-4, 230 pound Tight End Adam Cook who is being recruited by several D1 programs posted a max squat of 345 pounds and had a bench max of 275 pounds.

Brendon Armstead a 5-foot-11, 235 pound linebacker/fullback posted a bench max of 275 pounds and posted a remarkable 495 pound squat.

6-foot-5, 265 pound Offensive Linemen Hayden Wilson had a bench max of 265 pounds and also hang cleaned 315 pounds. Wilson is also being looked at by a handful of college football programs.

Leo Sykes who started at guard for Cleveland as a junior had a hang clean of 295 pounds and a bench press max of 285 pounds.

Darien Gonzales who started at corner last year posted an impressive 230 pound bench max and clean of 275 pounds which is very notable for a defensive back.

Linebacker Cameron Dunn cleaned 285 pounds and had a bench of 245 pounds.

Additional Players Who Impressed
Angelo Trujillo - QB - had a max squat of 275 pounds
Cody Anderson - DB - had a max hang clean of 230 pounds
Dominic Thompson - LB - had a max hang clean of 265 pounds
Jason Zhang - OL - had a max squat of 400 pounds
Michael Taylor - OL - had a max squat of 380 pounds
Niko Papadopoulos - RB - had a max bench of 245 pounds
Shawn Nieto - RB - had a max bench of 215
Veto Virgin - WR- had a max hang clean of 260

More with Sean Davis

“As a freshmen I was only cleaning 265, but really found my technique as a sophomore and then as a junior I wanted to set some school records here at Cleveland. A 405 pound hang clean has been the goal and today I achieved that.”

More with Daimon Altamirano

“There is a lot of people here and it’s exciting, we’re getting some big lifts in. We’re still hungry and ready to get after it. This is a very special group and we went undefeated as freshmen and we’re trying to end like these last seniors did by going out on top.”

More with Adam Cook

“We lost a lot of talent, but there is plenty of talent still at Cleveland. Schools such as New Mexico, Rice, and recently NAU was here and I am also planning on attending the Nike+ Opening in California this weekend.”

Closing Remarks from Hendo

It was a very live environment, music, action, big lifts, excitement, etc. Really a night where I thought this program is really taking New Mexico High School Football to new heights. Which is great for the the state as a whole, every time a bar is set, it’s an opportunity for a new coach or a program to rival that intensity and increase the level of high school football in the state, something that is happening now, especially in the City of Rio Rancho, a city that has now won the last two big school football state championships.

The Storm open the season on August 27 in Las Cruces, New Mexico against Onate High School.

Stats on under classmen

its nice to hear about the studs that played varsity the previous year, but here's an idea. If we could get some stats on JV players that will more than likely be filling gaps we could see the stronger trends. A lot of these teams have talent that no one hears about till they actually play in a varsity game. For instance Eldorados JV last year was filled with awesome kids but you don't hear about them till they get to the Friday night lights. Just think about it

District 3-5A Predictions for 2016
Joshua J Grine of NMPreps.com

A pair of teams move down from 6A football into a newly aligned District 3-5A and one has people talking state title. The Alamogordo Tigers started the 2015 season hot before a hiccup to end the season but 2016 brings a new standard that will have people talking state title..... Oh, and we already are.

More:
District 4-5A | District 4-6A Predictions | District 5-5A Predictions

Today, we take a look at District 3-5A and give our predictions for what the 2016 season could bring us. We tackle some questions, ask some at the same time and decide how the district will shape up.

Three Questions That Will Dictate The District

1, How Many Teams Are Playoff Worthy? Right now, we all are in agreement with Alamogordo. They have the air attack that could only be better this season. After that it is somewhat of a drop off and our next best guess could be in the terms of "that other" team that drops to 5A - Deming (No. 21 NMPreps.com's Spring Football Top 50 Rankings). Solid on 1 but maybe on 2.

2. How will Alamogordo handle the pressure? Yes, there is pressure - rightfully so and likely welcomed - to win or get darn near close to winning it all. Coach Hooper has built a heck of a football team and himself rising to the top of head coaches. I think last season was somewhat of a shellshocked approach as they beat some good programs, this year they have that blood taste and could look to finish it off. I think they handle the pressure well as they have the "eye of the...." (never mind likely used/overused). Kyle Hooper, being recruited, along with Alex Ramirez could be two prospects looking to be the top players in the district.

3. Santa Teresa and Chaparral Could Take Down Deming? As responded a few times that no team is going to lay down. Why the heck would they. However, we know they're teams that are favorites (see above) but they're teams that could make a run at the second slot and get an auto bid. Will they is the question? Deming did graduate a lot and might be vulnerable. I like Chaparral in this magical upset setting this season as they return Bryan Lopez who passed for 913-yards along with Andres Fisher who ran for 519-yards with 12-touchdowns. However, Santa Teresa might be the better suitor of the two in this case. Shoot did we ever see Capital as a playoff team. They have an unmentioned or undermentioned QB in Robyn Juarez that passed for nearly 1,000-yards and ran for another 500 accumulating 10-touchdowns. Continue reading.....

Predicted Finish

1. #14 Alamogordo (3-0)
2. Santa Teresa (2-1)
3. #21 Deming (1-2)
4. Chaparral (0-3)

Explain: Well, I did say continue reading above. Santa Teresa might be the Warriors that could be considered in my 5 Surprise Teams for 2016. Not to sure if they play Deming away or home and that could way my prediction but they could be a threat to be No. 2 and win some pre-district games.

Preseason District Awards

Player of the Year: Kyle Hooper (Alamogordo), Alex Ramirez (Alamogordo), Robyn Juarez (Santa Teresa), Andres Fisher (Chaparral)
Top Defender: Andres Fisher (Chaparral)
QBs to Watch: Kyle Hooper (Alamogordo), Robyn Juarez (Santa Teresa), Bryan Lopez (Chaparral)
Coach of the Year: Shae Vierra (Santa Teresa)

Euro 2016 .....Drama!!

The June of soccer has ended on a high!

The Euros started on a bit of a downer with the ugly scenes with the Russian hooligans, terror threats, and lots of other off field stuff....BUT......

Stories like ICELAND and now WALES breaking through into the 1/4s and now 1/2-finals if this doesnt get someones overall appreciation of sports as a whole....then nothing will. People who are true soccer-phobes would be hard pressed to watch and deny the marvel of some of these games!

And we still have GERMANY v ITALY tomorrow!!!!!

Travel Budget Released For Hobbs High Events

The travel budget for transporting Hobbs High School participants and staff is about $1.7 Million for the next school year. I would love to see a report on how many actual miles will be traveled per bus and per person for the year. I would also love to see the grand total of how many per person hours are spent on all of these trips. Along with how many class hours are missed. Not to mention the budget details for meals, housing, etc. These are staggering numbers for sure and with each mile there is an increased probability of problems or even disasters occurring. Hobbs High is not alone on this boat but I would doubt that any other school will have travel budgets as large. Should be interesting for sure. The team t-shirts for the Hobbs Eagles should read FASTEN YOUR SEAT BELTS!

Onate Linebacker Forest McKee Recruiting Update

Forest McKee Has Options
By: Kyle Henderson of NMPreps.com

kwaxganw6zcp7zc0knii

6-foot-1, 228 pound Forest McKee Right) out of Onate makes a play during last year's Elite Combine

Las Cruces, New Mexico - One of the top linebackers in New Mexico is Onate Senior Forest McKee. He’s actually one of the best overall players in New Mexico heading into the 2016 season.

Recently it had been reported that New Mexico State had pulled their offer from the 6-foot-1, 228 pound middle linebacker, so we caught up with McKee to get the full scoop on that situation as well as an update recruiting wise.

“Well there was a tweet floating around that said the Aggies had pulled their offer and that is false. The coaching staff did pull me aside and told me that if I did not commit soon, I would have to seek greener pastures. It was confusing to be honest, but I told them that I’ve only played in 10 varsity games (had to sit sophomore year because he transferred from Las Cruces) and until I’m just 100% ready to commit, I cannot give the Aggies a commitment at this point.”

McKee who had over 100 tackles as a junior and was a 6A 1st Team All-State Selection has a bench max of 400 pounds and a max squat of 490 pounds, and has been clocked with a 40-time this summer of 4.59.

“It’s been a crazy ordeal the last few days, but New Mexico State is still an option. I really like their Linebacker Coach Oliver Soukup, the school is in my hometown, and I like their facilities. But I do have additional options. In the last 24 hours I have heard from Eastern New Mexico who offered me, New Mexico, UTEP, and recently heard from Tony Sanchez, the Head Coach at UNLV.”

Henderson on McKee: Besides being a first class individual, he’s one of the most dominating defensive players we’ve had in years. The aggression and heart he plays with is unmatched and whomever lands up getting McKee at the next level is going to have a playmaker, but also a team leader that is willing to put the team first every single day. McKee plans to attend the NMPreps.com Elite Combine on July 22nd.

St. Pius X Quarterback Drew Ortiz picked up his first offer this week from St. Pius X

Big week of New Mexico High School Football Recruiting, currently exactly 20 in-state prospects hold either a D1 or D2 offer, very impressive being it's only June 17th.

Early in the week St. Pius X Quarterback Drew Ortiz was offered by the New Mexico Highlands Cowboys after attending the Cowboy's one-day camp at St. Pius X High School. As a junior Ortiz threw for 47 touchdowns, 2,200 passing yards, and had 1,100 rushing yards.

Mayfield Running Back Lands Offer No. 2

Kent State has offered Mayfield Running Back Isaac Vance. Vance also holds an offer from the New Mexico State Aggies. As you can see from the film below, he's simply just on another level and his field vision is among the best I've seen. Is also a very superb receiver, just label him a play-maker.

"It's a huge blessing. I am originally from that area and having the possible opportunity to head back home is very exciting. I have been in contact with multiple coaches on the staff, but Coach Needham (Defensive coordinator) is the one who officially offered me the scholarship," said Vance on the offer Friday night.

The 5-foot-8, 160 pound back who is also hearing from CAL and Texas Tech ran for 2,067 yards and 32 touchdowns as a junior breaking 7 school records in just 11 games.

The Trojans who have not a state title in 5 seasons are beyond hungry according to the early NMPreps.com Mr. Football Candidate.

"It's crazy right now. The energy and passion we have had so far has been the best I've been apart of in my going on 4 years at Mayfield. Our number 1 goal as a team is to genuinely love and care for each other, and with that, of course bring home the blue trophy and end the 5 year "drought".

Manzano Defensive Back Ryan Moore Lands Offer

Manzano Defensive Back Ryan Moore has been offered by Eastern New Mexico. He is also being recruited by Colorado State. "Ryan has been working very hard to become a top defensive back. He has been going to additional workouts outside of practice just to get better. He is a physical corner with good speed. Totally well deserved," Said Manzano Head Football Coach Chad Adcox.
