Thursday Night: The End is Near

The Showdown for Title Thursday

5-6A
Albuquerque (8-7, 5-0) vs West Mesa (9-8, 6-1): Well, it looks to come down to the final night, the regular season district championship and possibly the final and only playoff spot.

1-6A
Cibola (13-4, 5-2) vs Santa Fe; Cleveland (10-9, 5-2) vs Rio Rancho: Volcano is done and sits at (6-2) in the district. It could be easy for them if Rio Rancho and Santa Fe pull the upsets, the regular season title is the Lady Hawks. Likely, they both win and will force the three-way tie. Cleveland, however, is playing the tricky part with a crosstown rival game on the final night - these are always scary games.

5A - Playoff Spots
Several teams are fighting for playoff spots and also a seed for the playoffs.

Albuquerque Academy (13-6, 3-2): 96% Playoff Team. Likely, higher percentage as they will be dancing but a loss to Moriarty could hurt their seed.

Santa Teresa (14-5, 6-3): 85% Playoff team. They finish the season, trying to play spoiler to Centennial, and get a better seed. Centennial is going for title.

Moriarty (14-5, 2-3): 79.3% Playoff team. A well over .500 and a playoff team but seed could be affected with a 2-4 District record. Schedule strength will be affected.

Miyamura (13-12, 4-3): 62.5% Playoff team. Finishes the season with (3-16, 0-7) Aztec. They have a .5% better chance than Farmington because they might (I'll have to check the tie break situation) and an "easier" opponent is Aztec.

Farmington (10-9, 4-3): 62% Playoff team. It hurt falling into second place tie with Miymura a team they split with (lost last match against them 3-1). Farmington finish the night and season with Gallup.

FROM TUESDAY

Kayla Griego, Julianna Zamora and Emily Buford (St. Pius X) along with Haley Rizek who had the final shot and point on Tuesday.

Savannah Bush (23 kills), Ashton Garcia (10 kills, 6 aces), Jadyn Nanez (28 assists, 7 kills, 3 blocks) and D'Andrea Espinoza (17 digs) all from Centennial on win on Tuesday.

First Round Matchup Preview: 5A Boys

Each Day this week we will discuss a new classification and the matchups being played in the first round.

Boys 5A

8. Chaparral hosts 9. Santa Teresa
District foes the Chaparral Lobos and Santa Teresa Desert Warriors are being forced to battle it out once again. The first meeting of the two squads this year ended in a 1-1 tie. The second, had Chaparral hanging onto a 1-0 victory. The two have many of the same opponents with similar results, however, there are a few results that differ. Against Gadsden, Santa Teresa won one and lost one, while Chaparral tied one and lost one; and the Lobos have a loss against Los Lunas, while the Warriors do not. The Lobos have looked to two key players when it comes to scoring. Miquel Torres, who has 16 goals, and Uriel Rosales, who has 10, are these two players. As for Santa Teresa, Arturo Chairez was the Warriors main scorer with 11 goals so far this season. This will be a hard fought battle with both teams deserving a victory.

5. Centennial hosts 12. Goddard
The Rockets and the Hawks haven’t met this season, and only have one common opponent; Gadsden, whom they both lost to. Goddard’s biggest game was a 3-3 tie to Roswell. Centennial, as district champs hold many victories in their district. Jonathan Sanchez has been a strong goal scorer in 5A this season, knocking in 28 so far for the Rockets. However, Luis Cazares has 1 more at 29 goals, while fellow Senior Victor Lujan-Orquiz has 10 for the Hawks. Centennial should dominate this game and fly away with a victory.

6. St. Pius hosts 11. Los Lunas
This will be the second time the St. Pius Sartans and Los Lunas Tigers have met this season. The first time, which occurred on August 25, had the Sartans land on top 1 goal to nil. However, that game was months ago. The Sartans are coming off a loss to #1 seed Albuquerque Academy while Los Lunas is coming off a loss to county rival, Valencia. Sophomore Diego Flores has an impressive 31 goals and 12 assists for the Tigers. The next highest goal scorer for Los Lunas is Israel Resendiz with 12. Junior Andres Torres has 25 goals on his resume for the Sartans, while Julian Garcia has 15. This has a potential to be a great game to watch and could go either way in the end.

7. Capital hosts 10. Valencia
Early this season, the Capital Jaguars hosted the Valencia Jaguars in a non-conference matchup. Valencia took the win 2-0. Both Jaguar teams have wins against Artesia and Del Norte. Valencia split with Centennial, while Capital beat the Hawks once. Valencia split with Los Lunas, while Capital lost to the Tigers one time. Cristian Garcia and Luis Negrete both have scored 19 times for Valencia, while Garcia has 12 assists. Garcia also cored a goal on Capital. Victor Lozoya of Capital is no stranger at scoring goals, as he has knocked in 34 so far this season, as well as earned 16 assists. Teammate Alexis Romo has 22 goals and 11 assists. This will be another close matchup. Capital has the higher seed, but Valencia is no stranger to winning tough games.

Week 11 Tuesday Night: What Happened?... A Lot!

Week 11 Tuesday Night: What Happend?.... A Lot!
Joshua J Grine of NMPreps.com

Okay, it wasn't as 'crazy' as my title reads. However, we had a lot that happened last night and will lead to a crazy end to the final week of the regular season. Do tie breakers happen? I believe so, and we could have several.

THE BIG FIVE FROM TUESDAY

Cibola 3, Cleveland 1: What does that mean? Upset, well a little bit. Cleveland was moving into position for a top seed in the state tournament, that is in jeopardy now. This is how it breaks down: Volcano moves into first (6-2), Cibola half game back at (5-2) and Cleveland tied with Cibola at (5-2).

La Cueva 3, Highland 0: The Bears finish the regular season perfect at (18-0, 8-0) and District 2-6A champs. A huge feat for a team with a tough schedule in the biggest classification in the state of New Mexico. Breaking news..... likely the one seed in the state tournament. Okay, that wasn't breaking but hey.

Eldorado 3, Sandia 0: Okay, the Bears took the title in 2-6A but now who is second place? The Eagles beat the Matadors in a revenge game (Sandia won the first meeting) and now they are tied at (4-3) in the district. Not to sure at 5am in the morning if this helps or hurts their seed for state. I will break that down this afternoon after I formulate a response.

Kirtland Central 3, Shiprock 2: Dipping down into 4A the Shiprock Lady Chieftains, newly ranked No. 25 in the NMPreps.com Top-25, lost on their arrival on the big scene. Now they drop to (7-2), Kirtland Central (7-2) and half game back Wingate (6-2). Shiprock and Wingate will square off on Thursday to settle that situation and Kirtland Central needs to avoid losing to Bloomfield.

Centennial 3, Valencia 0; Los Lunas 3, Belen 0: Centennial moves to (8-1) and Los Lunas follows suit (8-1) with a win. Another situation of we need to figure out how the tie breaker works. Centennial wins they could be in store for a 1-seed in the state tournament, a loss and they could both drop a couple spots to possibility of 3-4 or best case scenario 2-3.

First Round Matchup Preview: 5A Girls

Each Day this week we will discuss a new classification and the matchups being played in the first round.

5A Girls

8. Centennial hosts 9. Los Lunas
The Los Lunas Tigers will travel 203 miles to take on District 3 champions, the Centennial Hawks. The two teams, being in the same district, have played each other twice already this season. The first time, Los Lunas won 4-1. The second, roles were reversed as Centennial won 4-1. Both teams have lost to Aztec, Beat Santa Teresa twice and Beat Chaparral twice. Their differences come with games against Belen and Valencia. Los Lunas split with Belen, while Centennial beat them twice. Centennial split with Valencia, while the Tigers won one and tied one against the Jaguars. Tia Gladem and Angel Salcido both carry 11 goals on the season for the Hawks. Gladem has knocked in 3 against Los Lunas, while Salcido has only scored once on the Tigers. Sophomore Kylie Spangler leads the Tigers with 17 goals and 10 assists and scored a goal on the Hawks in their first meeting. This will be a close matchup and anyone could take the win.

5. Los Alamos hosts 12. Belen
Last year, the Los Alamos Hilltoppers fell early in the quarterfinal to Academy and the Belen Eagles lost the weekend before to Piedra Vista. Both teams are looking for a better result in this year’s state tournament. Los Alamos and Belen have not played each other this year, however, they have played 4 of the same teams. Belen lost to St. Mikes, while Los Alamos tied them, and both teams beat Bernalillo, Moriarty and Del Norte. Sienna Ahlers and Katie Hopkins are the only two players for Los Alamos that are double digits in goals and assists with 20 and 10, and 11 and 11 respectively. Freshman BrookLynn Carter leads the Eagles in points with 11 goals. Los Alamos is looking like the team that will come out on top of this match.

6. Goddard hosts 11. Grants
The Grants Pirates are in the state tournament for the first time (at least since 2006). In 2014, Goddard lost in the quarterfinal of the state tournament to future state champion, St. Pius. The only stat we have to compare these two teams is the result they hold against Valencia. Goddard defeated the Jaguars 3-1, but lost to them later on, 1-3. Grants lost 0-4. Grants plays in a difficult district, so they only walked away with 2 wins, as they beat Moriarty both games. As for the Rockets, they went undefeated in their district and hold a win against Hobbs and tied Clovis and Carlsbad. Phoebe Rychener holds 12 goals for the Pirates, while Randee Romero has assisted a teammate 10 times. Junior Caitlyn Schmidt leads the Rockets with 19 goals and Junior Bethany Alvarez has 10. The Rockets are a strong favorite to win this game.

7. Piedra Vista hosts 10. Valencia
The Valencia Jaguars will tread 210 miles to take on the Piedra Vista Panthers this weekend. They have 5 mutual opponents. Both squads defeated Miyamura twice, Del Norte and Grants. The Panthers defeated the Los Lunas Tigers by a goal, while the Jaguars fell to the Tigers in one game, and tied in another. Ashley Rubio has 11 goals and 14 assists to lead the Jaguars in her senior season. For the Panthers, Makeyn Kalmbach has scored 12 times, while Hannah Sayyeau has found the back of the net 10 times. Natalie Martin has assisted a teammate 11 times. Piedra Vista may have the higher seed this year, but don’t count Valencia out.

Week 11: What to Watch

Week 11: What to Watch
Joshua J Grine of NMPreps.com

An important week around the state, the last week of the regular season, with some district regular season titles up for grabs. Let's take a quick look at the week.

More: Week 11 Scoreboard

TITLE GAMES

District 1-6A: Cleveland, the current 1-6A leader at 5-1, wraps up it's regular season with Cibola (Tues.) and Rio Rancho (Thurs). The obvious is they take home the title if they go 2-0. Volcano and Cibola both have 2-losses in district play. Volcano is (5-2) and has one game left, tonight vs Santa Fe. Cibola plays Cleveland and Santa Fe to finish their season.

District 5-6A: Albuquerque (5-0) and West Mesa (5-1) are playing for the title this week. If West Mesa takes care of business tonight against Atrisco and the Lady Bulldogs take care of Rio Grande tonight, it could set up a potential regular season title game on the 29th between the two.

SEEDS AND PERFECTION

La Cueva (17-0) they finish perfect and likely the 1-seed if they take care of winless Highland tonight.

Onate (13-5) haven't lost to an NM team and finish the season with another team fighting for a better seed in Mayfield. Could be a game of the week.

Sandia Prep (18-0) Take on Bosuqe (Tuesday) and Hope (Thursday) to finish the season and go into the post season (20-0).

St. Pius X (16-2) it will be tricky come selection night for the Sartans, right now ranked #1, but they have a resume loss to Centennial. Winning over Academy and Grants is a must and I think they could still the 1-seed. A Centennial loss could only help but Centennial has Belen and Santa Teresa left. This will be a fun selection to watch if they both go 18-2 (or 19-2; district tournament). The Sept. 26th match could be the difference.
