NMPreps.com's Week Three in Rewind

Another prep volleyball season in the books and we move forward to week four. Week three had a few tournaments around the state of New Mexico and plenty of action. Today, we will discuss week three top teams, top players and a quick look at the NMPreps.com week four rankings released earlier today.

Previous Weeks: Week 2 | Week 1

WEEK THREE WINNERS

Team of the Week: No. 4 La Cueva Lady Bears (3-0) - The Lady Bears start the season off 3-0 with a pair of wins over Top-25 teams, St. Pius X and Hope Christian. Annabelle Kubinski (2018) has 26-kills on the season all coming during week three of action. Celeste Carmignani (2017) also in dominating fashion having 12-aces on the season.

2. No. 19 Moriarty Lady Pintos (5-0): What better way to kick off your season than going 5-0 in your opening week and winning the tournament you host. The Lady Pintos took out No. 24 Santa Fe, Santa Fe Indian and St.Michael's. Sophomore Alyssa Adams with a whopping 57-kills to start the season has the Lady Pintos look for a deep run come the State Tournament.

3. No. 3 Centennial Lady Hawks (4-1): The Lady Hawks in convincing fashion took home the championship of the Las Cruces based Jane Leupold Tournament. The Lady Hawks biggest win was over Top-10 opponent in the No. 8 Los Lunas three games to none. These Lady Hawks currently ranked third are discussed as possible not only the best team in New Mexico but should be getting votes as the best team in the Top-25 (NMPreps.com Team Rankings of all teams in NM).

4. No. 10 Roswell Lady Coyotes (5-0): They were featured a week ago on our Hot Watch and the Lady Coyotes continue its winning ways staying perfect at 5-0. The Lady Coyotes had wins over Alamogordo, Ruidoso and then Top-25 team Santa Teresa (24).

5. Texico Lady Wolverines (3-1): The Lady Wolverines might have the biggest upset of the young season as the 2A team took out then No. 7 Eldorado Eagles of class 6A. They are the next team in for Top-25 and will be the first 2A team ranked if they keep their winning ways.

WEEK THREE RESTART

1. No. 21 Eldorado Eagles (1-2): Ranked-7 to start the season the Lady Eagles went 1-2 to start the season. The loss to 2A power Texico doesn't help the Lady Eagles chances of staying ranked. They fell to No. 21 as they had the biggest fall.

2. No. 20 Cleveland Storm (0-3): Haven't found a win this young season and fall from No. 9 to 20.

WEEK FOUR RANKINGS MOVEMENT

Biggest Drop: Eldorado 14 spots (7 to 21)
Top-5 Fall Out: Volcano Vista (5 to 11)
Top-10 Fall Out: Cleveland (9 to 20)
The Jump: Roswell 12 spots (22 to 10)
Most Impressive Newbie: Moriarty (Unranked to 19)
Teams that moved up: 13
Teams that moved down: 7
6A Teams: 12
5A Teams: 11
3A Teams: 2
2A Teams: 0
1A Teams: 0

Grine on the Rankings: It's the top-4 teams, in my opinion, and then a toss up after that. Los Lunas beats Albuquerque Academy easily then Academy turns around to beat then No. 5 Volcano Vista. The top-4 right now being Cibola, Sandia, La Cueva and Centennial. There is the great divide after that, as La Cueva who is ranked 4th beat St. Pius, ranked 5th, by a comfortable margin. It's still unknown and will take another couple weeks to see how things even out.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Player of the Week: Alyssa Adams, Moriarty/Sophomore: The sophomore had a huge 16-kills performance in a win over St. Michaels. She poured in 57 kills during the week to kick off the season.. The Lady Pintos unranked during week three now find themselves in the Top-25 rankings for the first time of the season.

  • Rose Moon, Santa Fe Waldorf/Senior: Moon led the 1A school with 17-kills in a win over 4A team East Mountain.
  • Deanna Bustos (West LV/Senior) - 35 assists in win over Santa Rosa, 34 assists in win over Raton
  • Maya Trujillo (Belen/Soph.) - 8 Kills in win over Rio Grande

Fascinating Thread Breakdown This Week

Like Audit Man said this past week whether you love Hobbs or hate Hobbs or just don't care either way; whenever a Hobbs related thread goes up so does the interest and participation. I have some interesting opinions why that is but I will keep them to myself. (Yes, there is a first time for everything. LOL) Anyway here is the fascinating breakdown of the threads specific to certain teams this past week. Mayfield Survives Thriller In Hobbs...1,274 read as of now and 53 responses. Travesty in El Paso for Las Cruces...282-17. Cleveland dominates Manzano...306-4. Rio Rancho 42, Valley 14...91-2. Alamo 53, Valencia 0...92-1. And, Farmington 15, Los Lunas 14...79-0. These 5 other games combined are 850 reads and 31 responses. Fascinating.

Good night folks! Well for the time of the column, good morning folks. Have some coffee and enjoy the recaps of the night at your one stop for the best place for New Mexico sports. I will run down the night and what we learned (or think we learned) from week-2 on the football scene.

TOP THREE STORIES TONIGHT

1. Artesia Winning and My Prediction:
The Bulldogs protected the Bowl and beat a visiting team that has the potential to still be a top team in 6A. Oh yeah remember me saying that I thought the Bulldogs would go undefeated and I still feel that way.

2. Piedra Vista the NW Corner Glowing: The Panthers did something that I didn't think would happen (just me) and beating the Rockets. Does this District have two teams that are better than the Rockets? Miymura anyone? Who knows but it is an impressive win.

3. Espanola mercy ruling someone: Okay, it was to another program that is not big on the football side but still when I started working for preps in 2010 (before my break last season) the Sundevils were on the other end of nights that ended early. Kudos my nortenos!

GRINE PICK 'EM

Well, in my feature this morning (Friday) I did a bold pick that Artesia would win yet I pick Hobbs in pick. What the heck was I think trying to pick both teams. Well, I lost on points there and yes I want to win Pick 'Em. I really want to do better this year.

Highland - 200: Won, the losing streak is over.
Portales - 200: Won, the Rams are killer the RB is dirty.
Albuquerque - 200: Not played yet still 2-0
Gallup - 200: So far we think they won, 3-0

Alamogordo - 75: I want again, 4-0 boo-yah!
Roswell - 300: Okay I was smiling.... I got this.... they had the lead and lost it in the 2nd half. (4-1)
Clovis - 300: Well, me and Clayton joked this game was played with leather helmets. I won still (5-1)
Goddard - 100: Hmm.. Public service announcement I lost (attn: above). Grrr..... (5-2)

Hobbs - 400: How did I say they would win on Pick 'Em and lose on Morning Coffee. I still think Hobbs will shock (5-2)
Capital - 300: Is Moon okay?? I will have to wait for this upset...Ohhhh.....
Rio Rancho - 200: Well, my weekly I only pick NM vs. TX. I lost. (5-3)
Cleveland - 100: Points! Thought Coach Smith (hoops coach-my former coach) had a goal outside with the amount of points (6-3)
Mayfield - 400: Okay they had to have scored more than the Trojans hoops last season. (7-3)

TWITTER

Coming soon. Not many funny ones like last week. Geoff Grammer (abq journal) will sing the AHS fight song if they beat Mayfield. Not really but I suggested it.

I mentioned me and Claytons tweets.

Send me some. Last week I had some good ones posted.
