Biggest Referee Inconsistency

After reading comments about referee issues throughout the state, I have to admit that one glaring inconsistency that hurts player development and also costs games is the lack of understanding of the 'verticality' rule. The verticality rule states that a defender has a vertical plane that they can stay on the floor in or become airborne in--that is their space to occupy even when their hands are in the air or when they are jumping in their vertical plane (paraphrasing from the NFHS rulebook).

What I see are offensive players ramming down the lanes, throwing their bodies into defenders who are occupying their own vertical plane, and getting fouls in the act of shooting when they are the ones violating the defender's vertical plane. I am not talking about defenders who 'belly up' or use their lower body to throw off shooters in the act of shooting which is clearly a foul. I am talking about an offensive player who drives to the hole, throws his or her body into a defender and gets the foul called over and over and over. A defender has the right to not only hold their ground but can also go into the air with arms extended in their vertical plane. I believe refs are under the false impression that because a defender jumps into the air that the defender loses all right to their area. This is clearly wrong. Anyway, this lack of consistency in calls takes away key players in games and makes offensive players look better than they are when the offensive player should be the one called for the foul.

Sorry, just venting about a problem I see in games at all levels and areas. It's pretty lame and should be fixed next year with better training.

February 16th: The No. 1 Seeds If The Playoffs Started Today [/B]

Please do not share this information on facebook or twitter. This is for premium subscribers only.

6A
Hobbs Eagles - 23-2 - Their late loss to Carlsbad is not being overlooked. Seeding is not about what happened one night during a rivalry game on the road. It’s the body of work. The Eagles have straight blasted everyone else and Carlsbad is a top 4 seed likely.

5A
Centennial Hawks - 19-4 - Two wins that stand out. Beating Hobbs and Cleveland. Those are likely the two top 6A seeds. They also just ran through their district and split with Roswell this year.

4A
Hope Christian Huskies - 21-4 - The dynasty continues at Hope Christian under Head Coach Jim Murphy. They have won 13 in a row and beaten some of the top teams from Class 6A. Huge favorite to win it all this year.

3A
Mesilla Valley Christian - 19-2 - Have won 14 games in a row and are currently a perfect 4-0 in district. Tristan Franzoy and Jeff Adler are one of the state’s top duo’s.

2A
Magdalena Steers - 24-0 - The only team still in the mix to finish the season perfect. Displayed their potency by blasting Hondo back in early February.

1A
Cliff Cowboys - 21-1 - Their lone loss on the season comes against Mesilla Valley by just 3. That says a lot as Mesilla is our projected 3A no. 1 seed. We hear 6-foot-8 Holt Shelley is one to watch.

February 7th: District Favorites aka Auto Bids

There are two ways you can guarantee your spot at the playoff table. 1. Win the district outright or win the district tournament. Today I’ll update you on the district favorites. Yes an automated monkey could do this, but it’s good to see the Forest from the Trees from time to time.

6A
1-6A - Cleveland (Think Cleveland will win game two and win the district title)
2-6A - Sandia (Straight rolling the district. Have won 7 games in a row)
3-6A - Las Cruces (It’s a topsy turvy district, but the Dawgs are playing best right now)
4-6A - Hobbs (No brainer)
5-6A - Valley (Are running the district with a 5-0 record)

5A
1-5A - Gallup (Clear favorite, no debate)
2-5A - Espanola (Del Norte also has one loss, but I feel Espanola rises just in time)
3-5A - Centennial (No brainer)
4-5A - Roswell (Teams are going to test Roswell inside the district, but RHS no doubt)
5-5A - St. Pius X (Clear favorite. However I could see Grants giving them a run in the tournament)

4A
1-4A - Bloomfield (Currently a three way tie for 1st place. Bloomfield is 16-5 overall)
2-4A - Taos (What a pleasant surprise they have been. The district is just loaded)
3-4A - Cobre (Is Cobre really going to win the district! Wow if so)
4-4A - Portales (Easy choice here)
5-4A - Hope (No brainer, but St. Mike’s could give them problems when it really matters)

3A
1-3A - Newcomb (16-4 overall, 4-0 in district)
2-3A - Santa Fe Prep (Clear favorite inside the district, could be final 4 team)
3-3A - Mesilla Valley (Top overall team in Class 3A right now)
4-3A - Loving (16-3 and 2-0 in district. Tough district to win though)
5-3A - Clayton (Final 4 caliber team, however Tucumcari and SR are very good)
6-3A - Laguna Acoma (No brainer)

2A
1-2A - Ramah (Puzzled here because their record is 6-15)
2-2A - ToHjiilee (14-2 on the season, 2A sleeper?)
3-2A - Magdalena (22-0 on the year, Class favorite)
4-2A - Hagerman (4 teams in the district have a 1-1 record)
5-2A - Escalante (Straight loaded with a 19-1 record)
6-2A - Logan (15-3 on the year)

1A
1-1A - SF Waldorf (15-4 and 4-0 in district)
2-1A - Cliff (19-0 this year, no brainer)
3-1A - Hondo Valley (19-1, no brainer)
4-1A - Grady (Grady and San Jon is going to be some good late season hoops)
5-1A - Springer (4-0 in district, unlikely they lose a district game)

February 6th: Bubble Watch Debuts

Today we release our "Bubble Watch" feature which you can expect a lot of movement in and out over the next few weeks. We consider a bubble team this: a team that is not a district favorite aka automatic bid or a team that is not a district runner up. 16 teams are granted a spot in the New Mexico High School Basketball Tournament in Classes 6A-1A. If you win your district, you're in, but if you don't, teams are selected into the tournament based off a certain seeding criteria: 1. Finish in regular season district play, Head to Head, Wins against district champions regardless of class, overall records and the Freeman Rankings (aka the sponsor that pays the NMAA to use their computer rankings).

Here is our latest 6A bubble watch by

Atrisco Heritage - The Jaguars are on top of the bubble with a 12-8 record, but have a 1-3 district record. Sure it's a loaded district, but you have to win when it counts, which they have not at least lately. What the committee is going to like about their resume is they do have good wins over: West Mesa, Onate, and Sandia. Beating Rio Grande on February 12th is a must win. Consider Atrisco in at this point.

Mayfield Trojans - District 3-6A is going to be the most exciting to watch finish as almost any team can win the whole thing. It's likely a district where we'll have a district champ and a district tournament champ. Mayfield is 8-14 overall and 2-2 in district tied with Gadsden for 3rd in district. The good news is they beat La Cueva head to head. They also just beat Gadsden and Deming. Staying ahead of Gadsden and Deming almost assures them a spot. Have Gadsden, Las Cruces, and Onate to finish out.

Rio Grande - Right now their 0-4 district record is killing them. If they don't win a district game, they need to win the district tournament to get in, it's that simple. No one is taking a team with a 0-8 district record to the Big Dance. They have beat La Cueva once and split with La Cueva.

La Cueva Bears - Did not expect La Cueva to win more than 15 games this year, but expected them to be more competitive overall. Maybe missing Overacker for a good majority of the season has shorted their wins, but whatever the case they still control their own destiny. They are tied with Eldorado for 2nd in district and will take on the entire district again before the district tournament. It's realistic that the Bears could finish district 5-3.

Eldorado Eagles - The Eagles started off the season with a big win over Cibola, but with no Zach Gentry this team has fizzled on the year with a record of just 7-13. They have a key win over Rio Grande in January and played Carlsbad within 5, but their recent loss to La Cueva pins them with a 2-2 district record. IF somehow, Eldorado can remain 2nd in district, they might have an outside shot of getting in.

Santa Fe Demons - With an 11-11 record, the Demons need all the help and wins they can get. They are already 0-4 in the district with just 4-games left against Rio Rancho, Cleveland, Volcano Vista, and Cibola. Their chances would be slim even if they had a few district wins. Best case for Santa Fe is to shock the state in winning the tournament, but let's be real that's just not going to happen.

Feel free to add feedback! I'll add more features like this as we move forward.

Swing Plane

backbackback.com_rotational_linear.jpg

I've been reading Ted Williams' the Science of Hitting. I am curious to hear your thoughts on swing plane. I was always taught the Linear Approach by Coach Shallenberger when I played. I have been in several conversations with other coaches who also teach the Linear Approach. I understand the purpose of getting backspin, but if you think of the sheer mechanics the plane doesn't make sense to me. If you swing down & square the ball up completely you will hit it straight into the ground. You would have to hit below the center line of the ball. However, most coaches teach to hit the top half of the ball which seems counterproductive. Also, the bat head spends less time in the path of the ball in the Linear Approach. Williams talks about how the pitcher stands above you & everything he throws will have a downward tilt because of the height, so it makes sense to swing with a slight upper cut to match the path of the ball. Thoughts, ideas, complaints? I've researching my methods because I don't want to become a traditionalist. Meaning I don't want to do it one way because I've always done it that way. If I am way off please let me know.

662,000 locker room in Wisconsin

Linked here via sports illustrated

It's been said that a town with money is a little like a mule with a spinning wheel: No one knows how he got it, and danged if he knows how to use it.
But when Arrowhead High School in Hartland, Wisc., came into a $275,000 donation, the school knew exactly what it wanted to build.
The donor eventually provided a total of $361,224 to totally renovate the boys and girls basketball locker rooms, as well as the boys and girls team rooms, a media room and football storage space and 25 percent of the money needed to revamp the heating and ventilation system.
