What To Watch This Week - Jan. 21

Boys 6A
Rio Rancho High at Volcano Vista, Friday at 7pm
Rio Rancho High has been on a tear since Brady Patterson's return to the lineup. Can the Rams continue their excellent play against Lorenzo Vigil and the Hawks? Rio Rancho High opened district play with a win over Santa Fe High on Tuesday, while Volcano Vista fell to Cibola. Every game in this district is important, as every team has a winning record.

Atrisco Heritage Academy at Valley, Friday at 7pm
The District 5 race could be an interesting one. DeShawn Lucero and Atrisco will travel to Valley on the heels of a matchup with district favorite Albuquerque High. Much like District 1, nearly every game in the district is important for postseason reasons.

Boys 5A
6A Albuquerque High at St. Pius X, Friday at 7pm
The Bulldogs are 14-1 on the season and remain one of the pleasant surprises of the 2014-15 season. St. Pius X is one the top teams in 5A so expect this to be a battle. Will the balance of St. Pius X hold Gabe Bump and Allonzo Armijo in check?

Espanola Valley at Del Norte, Friday at 7pm
Jared Garduno is a must-watch player, regardless of classification. He and the Sundevils travel to Albuquerque to face Daniel Delgado and the Knights in an interesting district matchup.

6A Carlsbad at Roswell High, Saturday at 7pm
A few weeks back these two squads faced off with Roswell earning a two-point win over Trevin Ramirez and the Cavemen. Expect another close game.

Boys 4A
3A Santa Fe Prep at Taos, Thursday at 7pm
Santa Fe Prep is a talented 3A team with Frank Castillo y Mulert and Ian Andersson. Can they earn a win against 4A Taos?

St. Michael's at Sandia Prep, Friday at 7pm

St. Michael's isn't the team they usuaully are, but they can still compete. Will Dustin Gaddis and Sandia Prep protect home-court? Prep is coming off a loss to Santa Fe Indian School and can't afford to dig themselves a hole this early in district play.

Santa Fe Indian School at Hope Christian, Saturday at 7pm

SFIS earned a district win over Sandia Prep, but the Huskies are a much more difficult challenge. Jordan Leake, Ben Kocurak, and Dedrick Milford provide a balanced scoring attack for the Huskies.

5A Grants at West Las Vegas, Saturday at 7pm

DJ Bustos remains my favorite player in the state. The sophomore smooth-shooter has made WLV one of the top teams in 4A. Expect Richie Lucero and the Pirates to make this a game.

Dropped: No. 7 Volcano Vista (Albuquerque, NM) (9-8)

Clovis did lose to 5A Roswell High, but they still hold the head-to-head edge over a one-loss Cibola squad. The Wildcats' loss to Roswell High is their first loss to a New Mexico foe. Hobbs has won six straight games, the second longest current win streak among 6A teams (Cibola, 9 straight).

Los Lunas High didn't lose this past week, but Roswell High's win against 6A Clovis tops the Lady Tigers win over Gallup last week. How amazing is the Espanola Valley-Los Alamos rivalry going to be this season?

4A Girls

1. St. Michael's (Santa Fe, NM) (14-2), prev. 1
2. Portales (11-4), prev. 2
3. Shiprock (13-4), prev. 3

9. Hatch Valley (11-6), prev. 10
10. Bloomfield (8-7), prev. unranked

Dropped: No. 8 Hot Springs (5-6)

Portales has failed to lose to a New Mexico school this season, as all four losses have come to Texas foes. However, I continue to give the slight edge to St. Michael's as they are riding a 14-game winning streak, including a recent win against 6A rival Santa Fe High.

Good Story out of Santa Rosa

During the football season Isaac Velasquez (senior at Santa Rosa) was diagnosed with cancer, underwent surgery, chemo, etc. Last night in the box scores I saw that he scored 10 points in a 70-62 win over Texico! What a tremendous athlete and person. Not many people could fight like he did. I remember his dad telling me this last football season that at one point he was in the hospital 10-days! God is good!

What To Watch This Week - Jan. 21

St. Michael's at St. Pius X, Thursday at 7pm
St. Michael's is on a 14-game winning streak. Can they stop Natalie Zamora (30ppg) to keep the streak going?

Valencia at Belen, Friday at 7pm
Some
of District 3's best teams face off on Friday. Belen has won seven
straight games, while Valencia has won six straight games. Expect these
two teams and Los Lunas High to compete for the District 3 title.

Hope Christian at Santa Fe Indian School, Friday at 7pm
Hope has played on of the most difficult schedules among all 4A teams. SFIS opened district play with a solid win over Sandia Prep.

Hobbs at Mayfield, Saturday at 3pm

These top five teams will face off this Saturday in a non-district
matchup. Hobbs is riding a seven-game winning-streak, while Mayfield is
coming off a recent win against La Cueva.
