Hoops: Daily Dimes - January 2nd

The top games happening today across the state. New Mexico High School basketball.

Tuesday's Games to Watch: Los Lunas at Capital. The contest of the night will take place in Santa Fe as No. 2 (5A) Los Lunas takes on No. 3 (5A) Capital. LLHS head coach Travis Julian is being described and rightfully so as one of the top defensive coaches in 5A basketball. We should then also place Capital head coach Ben Gomez among the top (underrated) offensive coaches. This could become one of the best of X's and O's for Tuesday night.

Under-the-Radar Games: Eldorado vs Rio Grande, Hope Christian vs Volcano Vista. Rio Grande is turning into a darkhorse of some sort. Eldorado maybe a state title contender. Volcano Vista, the defending 6A champion, is becoming a very underrated title contender. Hope Christian the 4A power continues to play one of the most difficult schedules.

Criteria Games: Manzano vs Valley, Sandia vs West Mesa. All four games are for position - today. However, that could change and this could turn into a bubble game when we continue our tournament talk in March (or whenever the committee meets). It's also a District 2-6A vs District 4-6A set of games.

Rio Rancho without their head coach: La Cueva vs Rio Rancho. Rio Rancho head coach Wally Salata was reported to be suspended for tonights game. The season has become a rollercoaster and another loss here could truly hurt, making the district play even more important to the Rams. We have been waiting on a bigger sample size for La Cueva and we finally get that this week.

District play starts, that is not a typo. District 3-6A kicks off tonight with Onate hosting Gadsden, Centennial hits the road at Hobbs and Mayfield goes to Carlsbad. This district has the best team in the classification and then a handful of uncertainty expect for Onate.

Sneaky Good Game: Portales at Goddard. A crossclassification regional game that should provide some spark. Goddard looks to continue the upswing after a 2-1 week. Portales at 7-3 looking for more respect in 4A.
