NMPreps.com's 25 Forwards to Watch in 2015-2016

Top Forwards to Watch in 2015-2016
By: Joshua J. Grine

New Mexico is known as the land of the guards or the 6-foot post. Well, this season we could see a shift as we have some solid forwards or "centers" (using center loosely) in New Mexico that could change the landscape for a season or two.

Each season we at NMPreps.com we look to promote and highlight the top players in our state. We take a stab before the season to predict the top 25 guards in the state of New Mexico.

DALTON PRIVETT
Dora High School (Dora, NM) | 2016 | 6'2" | Forward
Okay, we didn't get away from releasing a 6'2" forward but from the small school division we had to mention one of the top players from the division. Dalton Privett, a three year starter for the Coyotes will be a name to reckon with this season. Privett had outstanding numbers with 22 points per contest, 10 rebounds and 3 assists. Privett plays under a solid head coach in Kevin Lackey in the small town of Dora (if you haven't seen this cool little gym - go to it). Privett will be worth the drive if you are in the area. Smart player with good footwork.

DREW WASSANA
West Mesa High School (Abq, NM) | 2016 | 6'2" | Forward

I really like Drew Wassana and what he brings to the table for the Mustangs. Likely, could have been placed with the guards and if he wants to play at the next level he will have to be a guard but for this season we will place him with the forwards. Maybe not a pure point-forward to the term but that role could improve after the graduation of some guards for the Mustangs. Wassana, is able to catch the ball on the block and face the basket to make a move. He knocks down the 15-footer, can hit from the three and also penetrate to the basket. Solid player for the Mustangs who averaged around 15 points, 8 rebounds a game last season. You will see his name throughout the season for multi awards or preseason predictions.

BRENDEN BOATWRIGHT
Carlsbad High School (Carlsbad, NM) | 2017 | 6'8" | Forward

One of the best players in the state is Brenden Boatwright the big man from down south. Boatwright was ranked in the top-5 this summer in the 2015 NMPreps.com Player Rankings. Boatwright, is one if not the best big man in the state for the coming season and the junior will have the Caveman ranked high this preseason. He has the body, skills and mindset to be among the best the state has in big men and players. He averaged 11.4 points, 9.2 rebounds and 2.7 block per contest last season.

RICHIE LUCERO
Grants High School (Grants, NM) | 2016 | 6'5" | Wing/Forward

Lucero much like Wassana could be in the Top 25 Guards to Watch in 2015-2016 but we opted to put the stretch four in with the forwards but he is more of a wing. The Pirates backcourt is crowded with talent and Lucero could be a four going in but you will see him catch outside the paint and do work. He has a nice 15-footer that makes him likely one of the best players in 5A with his IQ, skill and confidence. Lucero averaged 17 points, 8 rebounds a game in 2015-2016. Getting interest and a definite next level prospect.

CALEB WROTEN
Sandia High School (Albuquerque, NM) | 2016 | 6'9" | Forward

Caleb Wroten has been on the NMPreps.com radar and Top 100 players since his freshmen days at Rio Rancho High School. Wroten a BIG, back to the basket forward that is a beast off the block. Wroten understands how to use his body and is difficult to defend in the paint. The more the Matadors go inside to Wroten the more unstoppable he and the team is in 2015-2016. Wroten averaged 12.3 points and 11.7 rebounds per game in 2014-2015.

NEXT 10 FORWARDS TO WATCH

Pierre Swain, Hobbs High School (2016/6'3"): Not huge but the workhorse gets into position and understands how to play. He boards well and is one of those forwards that gets into position for boards well, plays the bounce well.

Dakota Yancey, Rio Grande High School (2017/6'7"): Bringing height to the Ravens, Yancey is still developing but will be looking to improve his numbers and play in 2015-2016.

Teton Saltes, Valley High School (2016/6'6"): The football star is a powerful post presence for the Vikings and light on his feet is more of the clean up the glass bigs.

Johnny McCants, Onate High School (2016): One of the top names going into 2015-2016 McCants will be the face of the Knights season. Athletic and can beat you a few ways.

Marcus Williams, Cleveland High School (2016/6'5"): Athletic, can dribbile and hit the three and just the type of player that could go off any night. Williams, another player like McCants that is regarded as one of the top-5 players in the state.

Fantasy Pro/Rel in NMAA Boys Soccer

I got to reading some threads about the realignment, that led me to read an article about how AZ redid their system that uses a promotion/relegation type system. (I cant find that link anymore). So I started to think what that would do to boys soccer here in NM.

So, I probably wasted too much time in putting this together, but let me quickly explain what I did.

I took the past 4 years worth of boys W/L records from the NMSoccer webpage. NOTE: not all teams enter their info here, as will be evident, but it is the easiest place to find all the past seasons W/L in one place.

I then summed the total W/L per team over those four years (as per the data) to see who would be "promoted or relegated" according to the data.

I then created what I called "Fantasty 6A" "Fantasy 5A" and "Fantasy 4A" and the districts within each. The final product is the document you can find at this link. It is a Google Sheets file, so I hope most of you can at least view it.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/14riHNpPnwYbbHpJjLY0dY0KIH0qJSkT2qIGn3Z7cIdE/edit?usp=sharing

It shapes up pretty similar to current alignment, the districts wouldnt be too far off from what we currently see now. Of course over a few more 4yr cycles there would be more movement, maybe a Bosque or Sandia Prep to "6A" but with a four year block the 4-8 schools moving up/down would pretty much know their fate by year 3. The number of teams per district might fluctuate every 4 years but it wouldnt be anything AD's/NMAA couldnt foresee by year 3.

If anyone wants the raw data let me know and I can send/give you the file link so you can DL and mess around with it yourself.

Enjoy!

NOTES:
**The W/L is from NMSoccer.com - if there are wins/losses missing....not my fault.
**I did NOT take into account, state/district titles or playoff appearances...I know that is something AZ uses in there classification systems to move teams up/down.
**I tried to use current districting to keep the "fantasy" districts the same, but they of course can be debated.
**If my wife finds out that this was the "thing for work" that I was working on yesterday....wont be happy!

Goddard’s Andrew Shanor signs to play baseball at Wittenberg University

Andrew Shanor , a senior at Goddard High School, signed an official letter of intent to play collegiate baseball at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. Wittenberg is an NCAA Division III School and plays in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC). He was the starting first baseman for Goddard last year as a junior. Week Two The Week That Was

Week Two The Week That Was

BIG THREE

La Cueva Lady Bears
Record: 2-0
What Happened: The Bears moved to (2-0) on the season with a 21-point win over Albuquerque High. The Lady Bears who played for the title last season could be a force again this season. The Bears have outscored both opponents 60 to 36.

Alamogordo Lady Tigers
Record: 3-0
What Happened: The Lady Tigers will have it's true test this week but off to a hot 3-0 start. The Lady Tigers won a resume "helper" with a win over Gadsden.

Rio Rancho Lady Rams
Record: 2-0
What Happened: Well the Lady Rams are improved already from a season ago, long year to go, but a nice 2-0 start. The Lady Rams beat a good Farmington squad last week.

THE REST 5A & 4A

Moriarty Lady Pintos
Record: 3-0
What Happened: The Lady Pintos with a hot three start with wins over Manzano, Sandia Prep and Taos. They have outscored them 156-79.

Gallup Lady Bengals
Record: 3-0
What Happened: The Lady Bengals had one of the bigger wins to open the season with a 66-56 win over top ranked Las Cruces. The Lady Bengals also had a win over Del Norte by 51 last week (71-20).

Hatch Valley Lady Bears
Record: 3-0
What Happened: The Lady Bears moved to 3-0 on the season with a 48-28 win over 5A Santa Teresa.

THE PLAYERS WHO STOOD OUT - THE BIG THREE

Sophie Long, 2017, Albuquerque Academy: The junior opened the season with two impressive games 20 points 11 boards in win over Manzano 11/23 and 30 points 17 rebounds in win over Capital 11/24

Esperanza Varoz, 2019, West Mesa HS: 24 points and 5 rebounds for the freshman in a win over Sandia Prep.

Kristyn Arculeta, 2016, Alamogordo HS: With her second double-double on the season, Archuleta put in 27 points and 13 rebound in a win over Gadsden.

Is the all-metro final the first of many, or a one-year blip?

James Yodice's article in today's Albuquerque Journal (http://www.abqjournal.com/683139/sports/prep-football-metro-has-a-reason-to-celebrate.html) raised that question.

A couple of thoughts: when we talk about "the South" in the big-school final over the last 40 years or so, we are really only talking about the following: Las Cruces, Mayfield, Clovis, Roswell and Goddard. The last two, of course, aren't in the top classification any more and don't seem likely to move up anytime soon. And Clovis hasn't been to the final since '07, and has only one title in the last 20 years. It's really just Las Cruces and Mayfield that have represented the South consistently in recent memory.

So now that enrollment is way down at Mayfield and Las Cruces, should we expect a more even balance between South and North? Cleveland and Rio Rancho seem set up to be regular visitors to the final game going forward. Whenever Bradley and Miller retire (perhaps not far away for either), will that bring their programs back to earth? Will other Southern schools (like Carlsbad, Hobbs or Centennial) rise to a state-final level?

Classy Move By Hobbs Band Supporting Eunice

The Hobbs Eagle Band volunteered to travel to Eunice to support the Eunice Cardinals in the state playoff game tonight. Eunice does not have a band program. The Hobbs Taskervitch Band has also been known to play for EnergyPlex teams like the Tatum Coyotes at the state basketball tournament in Albuquerque. Way to go Eunice Cardinals and Hobbs Eagle Band! Clayton clawing their way back into game scoring two quick touchdowns with 5 minutes left. Now 26-22.

Games To Watch In Week Three. Monday - Wednesday Version.

Games To Watch In Week Three. Monday - Wednesday Version.
Joshua J. Grine of NMPreps.com

Each week we run down the must watch games for the week. This week features a Final Four
possibility match up between two Top-5 teams.

THE BIG THREE

Final Four Contenders Game
No. 3 Onate (1-1) vs No. 4 Cleveland (1-0): This contest would be greater a few weeks later as Cleveland (1-0) is still missing some of their top players. However, the Storm opened the season behind Marcus Gibson's 20-points by a huge margin over a, then, ranked Highland team. Onate (1-1) comes into the game after
surrendering their first win over EP Americas.
The Pick: Knights +4
Mr. Basketball Candidates in this one: Johnny McCants, 2016/W-F, Onate/Marcus Gibson (Cleveland)
Rising Players: Hunter Thomas, 2017/SG, Onate HS

Crossover Game/6A vs 5A Game
No. 7 Rio Rancho (0-1) vs No. 20 Espanola Valley (2-0): The Rio Rancho Rams are taking each game as a game closer to becoming the team we know or project them to be. Football players have a week under their belts and hope to avoid falling to 0-2. The Espanola Valley Sundevils are coming into this one with upset on their mind. They have a deep team this season and will look to run with the Rams.
The Pick: Rams +2
Mr. Basketball Candidates: Clay Patterson, Jr/G, Rio Rancho/Uriah Arellano, Sr./G, Espanola Valley.
Rising Names: Joe Elmalhy, So, Rio Rancho HS/Marcos Salazar, G/Sr, Espanola Valley.

Number One Opens Their Season
No. 1 Carlsbad (0-0) vs No. 25 Goddard (1-0): The number one team in the state of New Mexico officially opens their season with a visiting top-25 team in No. 25 Goddard. The Cavemen will look their advantage with their size in this game. Look for Brenden Boatwright to get plenty of looks in this contest. The Rockets will bring a trio of guards to keep this one close as the Rockets are ranked for the first time in a pair of seasons. However, the rising name is center Dalin Stanford for the Rockets who had 15 points and 7 rebounds last week.
The Pick: Cavemen +8
Mr. Basketball Candidates: Brenden Boatwright, F/Jr., Carlsbad/Noah Waide, G/Sr, Goddard
Rising Names: Bryce McAlister, W/Jr, Carlsbad/Dalin Stanford, C/So., Goddard

Grine Picks Record: (6-2)

RAPID FIRE

Tuesday/Wednesday Games
  • Intriguing Contest: No. 2 Albuquerque (1-0) vs Eldorado (0-1) - The Bulldogs look to back up the move to No. 2. Eldorado looks to rebound after falling out of the Top-25, losing last week.
  • Seed Game: Gallup (1-0) vs St. Pius X (0-0) - Both teams are historically tournament teams, that will likely happen again, so now this could be a head-to-head type of game.
  • Northwest Game: No. 9 Grants (1-0) vs. Piedra Vista (1-0) - The Pirates are the number one team in 5A and will look to continue the hot start as they beat PV's crosstown rival by 25 plus.
  • Bubble Type of Game: Clovis (0-0) vs Santa Fe (0-1) - Santa Fe needs this game, both teams do, but Santa Fe's loss hurts resume. This would really push them back.
  • Wednesday Game Head-to-Head: No. 17 Rio Grande (1-0) vs Eldorado (0-1): Both teams play on back to back nights. This one will hurt either team come March.

  • Poll
Week Two: The Week That Was (11/29/2015)

  • La Cueva (beat No. 3 Valley)

  • No. 9 Cleveland (beat No. 23 Highland)

  • No. 11 Volcano Vista (beat No. 8 Sandia)

  • No. 6 Albuquerque High (beat No. 2 Rio Rancho)

  • No. 10 Grants (beat Farmington)

  • Manzano (beat Moriarty)

  • No. 4 Onate (beat No. 19 Los Lunas)

Week Two: Numbers 2 and 3 Lose...Already
Joshua J. Grine of NMPreps.com

We'll we all hear the narrative, it doesn't matter where you start in the rankings. The opening week for the Albuquerque metro area brought the No. 2 and No. 3 team to a tumble, one to an unranked but history filled program.

More: Week One: The Week That Was

We (Or I) Bought What You Were Selling - 3 Drops

RIO RANCHO RAMS

Week Two Ranking: No. 2
What Happened: The Rio Rancho Rams program will be fine, Rams nation no need to worry in this 79-67 loss to No. 6 Albuquerque High. However, maybe the Rams were a bit on the overhype? Maybe, not for the sake of our preseason countdown. Many of the players recently turned in their cleats so this could be more of a wait and see. I still like this buy and not ready to take a loss.

VALLEY VIKINGS

Week Two Ranking: No. 3
What Happened: Okay, now we have the head scratcher (yes, I know it's too early) but I might sell and save any investment I had on this one. The Vikings either came into the season overhyped (by myself, I know) or the unranked La Cueva Bears who handed them a 58-47 loss are better than predicted.

HIGHLAND HORNETS

Week Two Ranking: No. 23
What Happened: Okay of the, "What were we thinking" teams the Highland Hornets sold us early on the hype and we bought into it. This was definitely my fault on the buy, after 4-wins in 2014-2015 we should have played the cautionary tale. However, I didn't and the Hornets suffered a 73-47 beat down by the No. 9 Cleveland Storm. Oh yeah the Storm's best player is still playing football.

I Didn't (or Sort Of) Bought What You Were Selling - 3 Risers

VOLCANO VISTA HAWKS

Week Two Ranking: No. 11
What Happened: Ranked 11th would be a great spot on any level but the Hawks, said the heck with that and beat No. 8 Sandia on opening night, 60-48. Maybe, it's time we throw a little more love this way for the Hawks. The will likely be a Top-10 team come the tie for the NMPreps.com Team Rankings are released.

GADSDEN PANTHERS

Week Two Ranking: No. 17
What Happened: A LOT! Okay, I don't me to capitalize that (well I guess I did) but the Panthers have played a surprising 7 games, going 5-2 in them. What happened last week was a win over Alamogordo, 61-42 that will only help come March when the selection committee looks at the ENTIRE resume.

ESPANOLA VALLEY SUNDEVILS

Week Two Ranking: No. 22
What Happened: The Espanola Valley Sundevils received more praise last week but we felt to plug them in here with a 87-56 win over Taos. Maybe last week still had something to do with the position on the riser but the Sundevils could be a team on the rise (or maybe they were there already). Side note: Thoughts go to Coach Martinez who lost his mother.

NMPreps.com Mr. Basketball Candidates

Finalist for this award will be released in March but we will track candidates all season long. This list could change each week, it could not change, it all depends on the candidates. Three a week.

Johnny McCants, F/2016, Onate HS: McCants led the highlight reel with five monster dunks, a two hand pin on the glass and countless plays. McCants went for 19 points, 10 rebounds and 6 blocks in a week two win over No. 19 Los Lunas (52-32)

John Paul Garcia, G/2016, Tucumcari HS: The small school division player poured in 41 points and 8-assists during a week two win over Floyd. Garcia could be one of the first players from this division to get serious consideration for the award if he's putting up 41 point games.

Gabe Bump, G/2016, Albuquerque HS: Bump led the No. 6 Albuquerque High Bulldogs to an impressive opening night win over No. 2 Rio Rancho during week two. Bump finished the evening with 24-points in the win.

New To The Game - Week Two Top Performances

Each week we will highlight new names to our list or players who had big games. Please submit yours each week. Link: Top Performers from Week 2

Jose Rodriguez, G/2017, Rio Grande HS: Rodriguez had a coming out party during week two with a 27 (or 29) point performance. He helped lead the Ravens to a convincing 84-57 win over Santa Fe.

Michael Castillo, G/2016, Hatch Valley HS: New name on the block as Michael Castillo opened the season with a 35-point performance. Castillo helped guide the unranked Bears to a win over Animas.

Simeon Moya, F/2016, La Cueva HS: Moya, helped the Bears open the season with a 15 point performance as the unranked Bears upset the No. 3 Valley Vikings. Moya will be one that we keep a closer eye on this season.

RAPID FIRE

  • Holy.....cowpie: West Las Vegas beat Hot Springs 102-16. Not to sure what happened in this one.
  • Top Ranked Underdog? Sounds funny but not getting much love as the No 2 team in 5A but a 87-60 win over Mayfield is convincing.
  • Saterfields: Mentioned that they are both out for the year for transfer rules.
  • Rebound: Gallup pounded Del Norte 68-37 and maybe the Bengals are better than a first week loss.

SMALL SCHOOL DIVISION

No. 3 Tucumcari Rattlers: Mentioned above but the Rattlers took it to Floyd, while their sharp shooter John Paul Garcia poured in 41 points in three quarters of play.

No. 7 Escalante Lobos: The Lobos put in a season opening win over Cuba. The Lobos could be in the hunt for the title this season.

No. 20 Pecos Panthers: The Panthers had a great week with wins over big school division teams 4A Wingate and 4A Hot Springs.
