Week 1: What To Watch (Tuesday & Wednesday)

Week 1: What to Watch Tuesday and Wednesday Night

The 2015-2016 basketball season is underway we take a look at the Tuesday and Wednesday night slate of games across the state of New Mexico.

FIRST HALF OF THE WEEK'S BIG THREE

Border Game: Onate (0-0) vs EP Americas (TX)- The Onate Knights who will be a top ten preseason ranked team hits the scene on Tuesday Night. The Knights who had a stellar off-season will be on the watch for every team in the state. The Knights are highlighted by NMPreps.com Mr. Basketball Candidate Johnny McCants (2016/6'3"/Forward) who is regarded as the top prospect from the 2016 class. Also, the anticipation of Joe Saterfield (a possible transfer from Centennial High School).

Northern Game: No. 20 Capital Jaguars (0-0) vs. Santa Fe Indian (0-0) - It's not going to be the decorated "Big Three" game but this one will provide lots of scoring and one fast, uptempo games. Capital also brings it's own candidate for NMPreps.com Mr. Basketball in Eric Coca (2016/Guard). Santa Fe Indian will also be a team on the rise in 4A basketball. Head Coach Ceci Moses has the Braves running and this could be a game to keep an eye on. No, not ready to call the upset, but we wouldn't be completely shocked if it's close.

We're Intrigued For Some Reason: Santa Teresa (0-0) vs. Alamogordo (0-0) - Neither team is ranked in the Top-25, Santa Teresa came in 47th on our ranking while Alamogordo was spotted at No. 38. The reason we are intrigued with this contest because we know little about the Desert Warriors who are always a well coached team that plays to it's strengths. On the other side it's the introduction of Tom Shields as the head coach of a talented Alamogordo Tigers. Both coaches work the ball around and could be too close to comfort for the 6A Tigers against the 5A Desert Warriors. Expect a game in the 40's to low 50's.

GRINE'S TAKING THESE THREE IN THE BIG THREE

Onate, Capital and Santa Teresa. The Knights of Onate are too talented to not start off with a bang. Capital has a killer duo and Santa Teresa is my upset pick of the three.

Record (0-0)

THREE PLAYERS TO KEEP AN EYE ON

Tomas Cano, Gadsden High School: The guard will be one of the highest ranked Panthers and under the spotlight each week. Had a big 20-point game last week against Centennial.

Johnny McCants, Onate High School: When you are given this much praise, we will all have eyes on each game McCants plays. The last star to nearly win the NMPreps.com Mr. Basketball was runner-up Tim Jacobs (New Mexico Lobos player).

Eric Coca, Capital High School: Coca has been talked up, much like McCants, and now is the time to prove why he should be a NMPreps.com candidate. Each night he will have to live up to the hype and the Jaguars are a state title favorite to most, so now is the time to answer with a bang in week one.

WELCOME TO THE HEAD CHAIR
  • Mayfield head coach Billy Keys is in his debut as head coach of the Trojans.
  • Alamogordo welcomes Tom Shields in his first season with the Tigers.
  • Thoreau also has a new head coach in Ryan Walsh the former Grants head coach.
  • Clyde Sanchez slides over from assistant to head coach of the Santa Fe Prep Blue Griffins.
  • Charles Ashley is the new head coach for the Bosque Bobcats after spending years as an assistant with Albuquerque High.

Preseason Rankings: No. 15 Centennial Hawks

The 2015-2016 season has officially started and today we start our countdown of the top 50 programs in New Mexico Big School Division (6A-4A).

More: Preseason Rankings Home: 50-1 | Rankings 72-51 | Preseason Preview Page

The Centennial Hawks are the 5A reigning State Champs after a 28-4, 10-0 season that ended with a 16-game winning streak.

Overview: Head coach Steve Heredia has done an outstanding job building a new program and leading them to a state championship in a short four year existence. The Centennial Hawks are one of the best defensive teams and when we talk about uptempo this defense is what describes this team. They had a talented roster last season led by Cesar Molina a senior this year that has already given a verbal to play college basketball. The Hawks still a favorite moving forward are preseason No. 3 in 5A basketball.

Last Season
Record: 28-4, 10-0
Home Record: 11-1
Away Record: 8-3
Neutral Record: 9-0
Post Season: 5A State Champions
Points per game: 69.25 (2216)
Points against: 45.90 (1469)

Realistic Prediction: The Centennial Hawks (as we all know) lost a player that is one of the best talents in the state. Looking at the numbers though the Hawks allowed only 46 points a game and averaged 69 a game. Those two numbers are outstanding for 5A basketball. This team still has a talented guard in Molina, likely the best in 5A or one of the best. I could see them win 20 games again and make the Final Four, even though that task will be tough.

District Champ: 90%
Playoff Team: 100%
Elite Eight: 91%
Final Four: 89%
Title Game: 40%: We have to other teams for that game.

Returning Players: Cesar Molina is a special type of player and will be a focus for the Hawks. They will also welcome new talents and have a transfer from Venezuela that is supposed to be a special guard. They will have plenty of seniors this coming season and they all have experience.

Preseason Rankings: No. 5 Hope Christian Huskies

The 2015-2016 season has officially started and today we start our countdown of the top 50 programs in New Mexico Big School Division (6A-4A).

More: Preseason Rankings Home: 50-1 | Rankings 72-51 | Preseason Preview Page

The Hope Christian Huskies won their 13th State Championship under head coach Jim Murphy after a 27-4, 9-0 season.

Overview: Head coach Jim Murphy is regarded as the top coach in New Mexico and the Huskies will again bring a talented roster in 2015-2016. The Huskies, are the top ranked 4A basketball team in the state of New Mexico this preseason returning seven players of the title team from a year ago.Returning this season is one of the top players in 4A who could also be regarded as one of the top players in the state in Jordan Leake (2016) a 6'2" wing with plenty of athleticism.

Last Season
Record: 27-4, 9-0
Home Record: 7-1
Away Record: 7-1
Neutral Record: 13-2
Post Season: 4A State Champions
Points per game: 69.67 (2160)
Points against: 49.80 (1544)

Realistic Prediction: Many people argue that, just because the Huskies play in 4A basketball that they shouldn't be the high. Well, each season they prove their work beating each classification, last season included. The Huskies went 11-4 vs 6A teams, playing an impressive non-district that consisted mainly of 6A teams. Our prediction is the 14th state championship and 20 plus wins.

Biggest Questions: Where to place the 14th state championship or what toe does Murphy put the new ring on? Kidding of course.

Chances
District Champ: 100%
Playoff Team: 100%
Elite Eight: 100%
Final Four: 100%
Title Game: 100%

Returning Players: The Huskies do graduate some talented players and it's always difficult returning the talent they had. However, they play in this system that continues to produce all-state players. Jordan Leake, is as good as it gets and will be a favorite for 4A player of the year.

Jordan Leake (2016)
John Bolkema (2016)

The Onate Knights are returning off a 15-14 season in which they reached the State Tournament.

Overview: The Onate Knights are returning in 2015-2016 with plenty of hype after a stellar summer and transfer of two top prospects. The Knights return eight players from last seasons state tournament team, including six from the class of 2017. The player that everyone is looking at and who could potentially be a Mr. Basketball candidate is Johnny McCants is a 6'5" forward with all the talent.

Last Season
Record: 15-14, 5-3

Neutral Record: 4-4
Post Season: First Round; Lost to Valley (65-60)
Points per game: 48.68 (1412)
Points against: 49.68 (1441)

Realistic Prediction: The Knights have plenty of talent and for good reason, Johnny McCants is a stud. This team could be one of the most talented teams in Onate history with the level of talent or could challenge the state championship team from 2011. Our prediction is a Final Four and 20-win season.

Biggest Questions: Plenty of talent, do they all mesh well together?

Chances
District Champ: 100%
Playoff Team: 100%
Elite Eight: 100%
Final Four: 90%

Returning Players: We mentioned McCants as a top returning talent but we could list several players to watch on the Knights this season. Junior Hunter Thomas and the addition of two players from Centennial (Saterfield brothers) create a solid squad.

The Rams are coming off a 17-10, 6-0 season that resulted in a District Championship and Final Four appearance.

Overview: Head coach Rickie McBroom has quickly put the Rams back on the map as one of the top programs in it's classification. The Rams lose two of their top guards from last season but return some solid players to their front court. Jeremie Karngbaye a 6-5 post will be one, if not, the best in the paint off the block post players in 4A basketball. The Rams will have depth and the coaching staff will have this team ready on any given night.

Post Season: Final Four; lost to Hope Christian (70-46)
Points per game: 55.59 (1501)
Points against: 49.18 (1328)

Realistic Prediction: Looking a 4A basketball we are high on Portales this season (No. 3 NMPreps.com 4A Rankings). This will be one of the best teams and dependent on the selection committee actually rewarding a deserving team with a 2-3 seed they could play in the title game. They play a tough schedule and they could very well win 20-games this year and they are a true contender.

District Champ: 99%
Playoff Team: 100%
Elite Eight: 95%
Final Four: 90%
Title Game: 85%

Returning Players: Karngbaye is one of the best bigs in the classification and state, a strong big in the paint that cleans the glass. Ben Wallace like, that could very likely be a 20-10 type of player. Athletic and quick in transition, where he will get most of his points, Bronte Stauggaard is an athlete and will be one of the better players in 4A. They have a guard in JR Ramirez that will be a name to know this season as well.

Ft. Lewis beats Wyoming

D2 Ft. Lewis recently beat Wyoming. CSU Pueblo gave the Lobos a game. Midwestern State beat Texas Tech last year. Recently St Johns was beaten by 20 by a D2 school. If you haven't seen it lately, good D2 schools are right there with mid-level D1 schools. Just watched Highlands NM play - Their athleticism and size rivals the Lobos. Good D1 players are no longer satisfied riding the bench and are now filling up the ranks of D2 schools where they get to play all the time, and it is making for a very competitive D2 league.

2015-2016 Preview

The Hope Christian Huskies were young last season and the defending champs return their top three scoring options in Alivia Lewis (2017/F), Hanna Valencia (2017/G) and Brielle Milford (2017/W) in what could be the start of a three peat for the Lady Huskies. This team is deep and will be deep for years to come with the young talent moving up.

Portales brings back one of the best players in the state in Kambrey Blakey a senior who will look to put the Lady Rams back into the number one slot after failing to defend their 2014 title. The Lady Rams are another team, like most in the Top-5, to be very deep and talent throughout the roster. This team is coached extremely well.

Shiprock, Ruidoso and Kirtland Central round out the top-5 in what will be an interesting mix of 4A women's teams. Shiprock has a trio in Tanisha Begay (2017/G), Paige Dale (2017/G) and Shontai Grey (2016/F). Ruidoso welcomes back likely one of the best post players in the state in Lia Mosher (2017/F) a 11 ppg. and 9 rbg. player. Kirtland Central only graduates three players from a 17-11 team last season.

Preseason Rankings: No. 6 Albuquerque High Bulldogs

The 2015-2016 season has officially started and today we start our countdown of the top 50 programs in New Mexico Big School Division (6A-4A).

The Albuquerque High Bulldogs are coming off one of their best seasons under head coach Ron Garcia. The Bulldogs went 22-7, 4-4 reaching the 6A Final Four.

Overview: The Bulldogs are one of those hype or real deal teams that we have on our board. No question this team has some talent and will be a threat for the Final Four again. The Bulldogs return nine players from the 2014-2015 squad and hoping to become the first Bulldogs team since the 90's to reach the final game. Gabe Bump (2016/6'1"/G) will be a NMPreps.com Mr. Basketball candidate this preseason and for good reason. Bump, will be the focus of every opponent this season and will look to a trio in the making to elevate some of the pressure.

Last Season
Record: 22-7, 4-4

Neutral Record: 5-2
Post Season: Final Four; Lost to Cleveland 81-60

Points against: 53 (1538)

Realistic Prediction: The Albuquerque High Bulldogs have the spotlight on them this season in what is one of their best teams returning and/or one of the best chances in making the final game. They have had some talented teams (2012) but this team has the ability to play for the final game with how wide open 6A is this season. Right now, we see them as a potential 20-win team and an Elite Eight team (for now). Good guards and supporting cast but we have a few teams just above them.

Biggest Questions: Gabe Bump is solid but will his supporting cast be enough?

Chances
District Champ: 90%
Playoff Team: 100%
Elite Eight: 94.5%
Final Four: 80.1%
Title Game: 61.3%

Returning Players: Bump is mentioned but look for Allonzo Armijo (2016/Guard) and Yannick Ilunga (2016/Guard) to also be in the spotlight. This trio could be in the making for a big year and Ilunga is a player we have our eye on as a 6'3" guard.

Roster
Ray J Cole (2016)
Yannick Ilunga (2016)
Joaquin Montano (2016)
