Preseason Rankings: No. 7 Hobbs Eagles

The 2015-2016 season has officially started and today we start our countdown of the top 50 programs in New Mexico Big School Division (6A-4A).

More: Preseason Rankings Home: 50-1 | Rankings 72-51 | Preseason Preview Page

The reigning 6A State Champions in the Hobbs Eagles return after hanging number 17 in Tasker Arena.

Overview: Averaging a eye popping 81 points per game the fast, flying Eagles soared to another State Championship, the first under head coach Mike Smith. The Hobbs Eagles had one of the top rosters in the state led by two next level players in Trey Nelson (NMHU) and 6'11 Kelvin Jones (UTEP). The Eagles graduate their top three scorers, top two rebounders and leading assist man in point guard Trey Nelson. The Eagles will look the Pierre Swain (F/2016) in the paint after averaging 10.3 points and 3.9 rebounds per game.

Last Season
Record: 30-2, 7-1
Home Record: 14-1
Away Record: 8-1
Neutral Record: 8-0
Post Season: 6A State Championships
Points per game: 81.4 (2605)
Points against: 54.7 (1753)

Realistic Prediction: A No. 7 ranking is likely to cause a stir with the Hobbs nation but numbers wise they have some holes to fill off the state title team. The Eagles showed that they might have some question marks having to fight back after being down big last week in their opener against 5A Centennial. I have them falling in the Elite Eight (before you call for my head), this team could very well be another 20-win team and I'm predicting 20-wins. I just see a lot to replace from last season and 6A is loaded with teams in the top tier.

Biggest Questions: They have to replace a difference maker in the paint with 6'11 post player, can they? They have been known to run under Smith but last season they had a defensive guy in Jones that hurt other uptempo teams.

Chances
District Champ: 90%
Playoff Team: 100%

Returning Players: Pierre Swain was a utility man in the paint and around the basket. Guard Jordan Gonzales a senior will take over duties at point guard and Hobbs faithful have faith in him to be just as good as Nelson.

NMPreps.com 25 Guards in New Mexico for 2015-2016

25 Guard in New Mexico for the 2014-2015 Season
By: Joshua J. Grine

Who are the best guards in New Mexico this season? We try to review 25 guards that would be considered 25 of the best at the guard position to start the season. We asked NMPreps Nation and we took that into consideration but the big reveal is here as the NMPreps staff release their list.

Each season, we at NMPreps.com look to promote and highlight the top players in our state. We take a stab before the season to predict the top 25 guards in the state of New Mexico.

ALEXIS REYES
Valley High School (Abq, NM) | 2016 | 5'6" | SG

Reyes was part of the 20-9, 8-1 Valley Lady Vikings playoff team from 2014-2015. Reyes was only a junior last season but was a main focus to a talented team. Reyes penetrates well to the basket and finishes well in traffic. She has a solid first step off her crossover and uses her body well near the basket. She can also knock down from beyond the arch with consistent jumper, it's a nice looking form.

SYDNEY CANDELARIA
Eldorado High School (Abq, NM) | 2017 | 5'6" | PG, SG

Candelaria seen her role improve drastically last season for the Lady Eagles and she answered the call. Her numbers improved from 4.1 ppg to 16.8 ppg as a junior. Her shooting percentage is among the top in the state at 42% along with having solid numbers across the board with 2.3 assists per contest and 3.5 rebounds. She could be one of the best guards in 6A the state this season and have the Lady Eagles playing late into March, they went 15-13 last season falling to Hobbs in the state tournament but the team should be much improved.

MELISSA MANCHA
Volcano Vista High School (Abq, NM) | 2017 | 5'6" | PG, G

Mancha's numbers won't jump out at you but as a sophomore, playing under one of the best (if not the best) head coaches in New Mexico you have to love the upside. Mancha averaged about 5 points per contest and 3 assists along with 2 steals a game for the (18-11, 7-1) Volcano Vista Lady Hawks last season. Her role will grow this season and you could start to become more familiar with this point guards name. She had two break out games against Eldorado (16 points/7rebounds/3 assists) and La Cueva (13 points/4 rebounds/3 assists) last season that were pointed.

Preseason Rankings: No. 1 Carlsbad Cavemen

The 2015-2016 season has officially started and today we start our countdown of the top 50 programs in New Mexico Big School Division (6A-4A).

More: Preseason Rankings Home: 50-1 | Rankings 72-51 | Preseason Preview Page

The Carlsbad Cavemen finished 21-8, 5-3 that resulted in an Elite Eight last season, the best season in years for the Cavemen.

Overview: The Carlsbad Cavemen had one of their best years in program history with a 21-win season and Elite Eight appereance. This program was once ranked the worst 6A (5A at the time) in the state of New Mexico from 2006 to 2012 span. This will be one of their most talented teams coming back and will have one of the best teams in their history. 6-9 post player Brenden Boatwright is regarded as one of the best players in the state of New Mexico and will look to his junior season as one of his staple seasons.

Last Season
Record: 21-8, 5-3
Home Record: 10-2
Away Record: 8-2
Neutral Record: 3-4
Post Season: Elite Eight; Lost to Albuquerque High (51-50)
Points per game: 59.10 (1714)
Points against: 48.82 (1416)

Realistic Prediction: I am a huge fan of Jamaal Brown. Have you ever seen him scout or at a coaching clinic? The master of taking notes. It's hard to not root for a coach who loves this game this much and evident that he took the worst program in 6A and made them a winner. I would have never imagined them a preseason #1 but that's where we are today. The Cavemen are 20-win bound and title game expectations are here. When good teams get a small taste but get "upset" they return favorites the next year (if you watch baseball think Royals with CHS).

Biggest Questions: How do they handle having the target all season? No longer an underdog.

Percentage we would pick them
District Champ: 99%
Playoff Team: 100%
Elite Eight: 100%
Final Four: 98%
Title Game: 97%

Returning Players: Boatwright is huge but this roster is much like a college roster, in terms of height. It's unreal for an NM team to be loaded with height. Chris Johnson (2017/6'5), and Bryce Mcalister (2017/6'6) are apart of a talented, huge and junior led roster.

Preseason Rankings: No. 23 Highland Hornets

The 2015-2016 season has officially started and today we start our countdown of the top 50 programs in New Mexico Big School Division (6A-4A).

More: Preseason Rankings Home | Rankings 72-51 | Preseason Preview Page

The Highland Hornets are coming off a season that was well under average going 4-21, 2-6 on the season missing the state tournament.

Overview: When you think of those coaches that do more with less you have to think of coach Danny Brown. The Hornets will be much improved from last season and has plenty of hype going into the 2015-2016 season. One guard that we were high on in the summer was a deep range soon-to-be freshman by the name Fabian Roybal. Fast forward and Roybal will be one of the juniors to watch this season and will come into his own as the team is handed to the 2017 class member.

Last Season
Record: 4-21, 2-6

Away Record: 2-7
Neutral Record: 0-5
Post Season: Missed the playoffs
Points per game: 44.84 (1121)
Points against: 59.36 (1484)

Realistic Prediction: Highland was not very good offensively last season and in a day where uptempo offense rules the Hornets fell behind last season. That is okay though, for one, they lost their top scoring guard in Roybal. Secondly, they were in a transition season and just getting experience. Okay, I will agree with you if you say this team should not be in the Top-25 coming off a 4-win season and likely we are buying into the hype but we love what coach Brown does. This will be a team that could be the most improved from one year to another. 10-14 wins and a state tournament bid is staying 'realistic' at this point. With only two seniors returning with varsity experience this team will be one of the younger but a threat in 2016-2017.

District Champ: 71.1%
Playoff Team: 53%
Elite Eight: 15%
Final Four: 10%
Title Game: 5%

Returning Players: Roybal is the name we know but this roster should bolster plenty of new names to the scene. They have a pair of big men in 6-5 posts headlined by Cael Apodaca who has been improving and just going to be a junior this kid will improve well in this program.

Roster
Isaac Gallegos (2016)
Robbie Koech (2016)

Week One Reactions

Post thoughts on games, etc.

Blog: No. 20 Capital 62, Santa Fe Indian 41- Wednesday Night, November 18th
Well, the top half of the week is done. I agree with statements made above by NM_Shock. It is hard to get a read on the Capital Jaguars but what I saw was coach Ben Gomez do a phenomenal job manage this contest against a team that was playing "street ball" for the lack of a better term.

There is uptempo ball, I think Rio Rancho, who have a pattern and some discipline and then there is "here's a basketball, go crazy y'all". Santa Fe Indian took any and all open shots. I know it's game one but was taken back on this one. Santa Fe Indian will cause problems for some teams, luckily for the Jaguars they have a coach who knew how to manage this game and settle his players when needed.

Players
Eric Coca was a bit rushed with his decisions on attacking the paint with the style of Braves in the first quarter but quickly controlled the pace and had a stellar second quarter. He was a smart player and was a floor general out there. I sort of thought of him like Tim Jacobs of Onate from 2011. Not the same size but the coach on the court, controlled the pace and hit the open shot.

Capital has a sophomore guard that I really like. Young but quality little guard. Jeremy Anaya played well and a couple nice drives (one video).

Capital's defense was on-point. They new when to attack in transition or when a weaker guard was caught in the backcourt. Definitely could elaborate more on that.

The Extra
Food:
I would run an on-going ranking of concession stands, well sorry the food critic couldn't wait in line. Every student at SFIS was in line both times I went up there.

Atmosphere: This gym is amazing. Not a bad seat in the house. Also, people are so nice in Santa Fe, welcoming folks.

Preseason Rankings: No. 3 Valley Vikings

The 2015-2016 season has officially started and today we start our countdown of the top 50 programs in New Mexico Big School Division (6A-4A).

More: Preseason Rankings Home: 50-1 | Rankings 72-51 | Preseason Preview Page

The Valley Vikings are coming off a 17-10, 7-1 season in which they reached the Elite Eight.

Overview: The Valley Vikings are back in talks for the State Title only a year removed from their title in 2014. The Vikings return six players from last seasons team and a few top notch players that could find themselves among the Top-10 in the NMPreps.com Top 100 Player Rankings. Point guard Anthony Chavez (2018/PG) returns as one of the best sophomores in the state but also one of the best players all around. The point guard showed high level of poise and control, only as a freshman in the Elite Eight last season.

Post Season: Elite Eight; Lost to Rio Rancho (59-57)

Points against: 53.33 (1440)

Realistic Prediction: The Valley Vikings have the best, young, point guards in the state of New Mexico. We honestly feel he could be a legitimate contender for Mr. Basketball as a sophomore. We like this team as a 20-win team and Final Four team this season. We wouldn't be surprised if they played on the final day in March however.

Biggest Questions: They had two stud freshmen last season, do they have a sophomore slump? Or are they too young for a title talk at this point/

NMPreps.com's 2015-2016 5A Preseason Top-10
Joshua J. Grine of NMPreps.com

Today, we take a look at our preseason ranking and showcase the teams, players and give our thoughts on the season.

Top-10 Ranking - November 12th
1. Roswell
2. Los Lunas
3. Gallup
4. Espanola Valley
5. Valencia
6. Los Alamos
7. Farmington
8. Belen
9. Grants
10. Lovington

We start off at the top of our list with our early season favorite in the Roswell Lady Coyotes, who finished 24-5, 6-1 last season ending with a loss in the Final Four to state champion Los Lunas.

The Lady Coyotes only graduate three players and return eight players, people in Roswell hope this is the year they finally get over the hump. Jaedyn De la Cerda (Guard/2017) is a rising prospect and one we are excited to see in 2015-2016.

The reigning state champions come in ranked No. 2 on our NMPreps.com Preseason Top-10 Rankings. The Tigers led by one of the top head coaches in women's basketball will be, again, one of the most feared and favorite teams. Jordan Holland (2016) is arguably one of the top overall athletes in the state and will be the one to watch for the Lady Tigers.

Ni'Asia McIntosh (Wing/2017), a likely preseason candidate for Miss Basketball in the State of New Mexico, will lead the Gallup Lady Bengals in 2015-2016. The star junior will look to help lead her squad back to the state championship after a runner-up in 2015.

Espanola Valley returns after a 25-4, 8-1 season that resulted in a Final Four showing. The Lady Sundevils return the roster and will be a contender again. Kaitlyn Romero (Guard/2016) returns for her fourth varsity season.

Rounding out the top five the Valencia Lady Jaguars have continually been on the cusp of reaching the final game. Lorien Aragon (PG/2017), Raenne Herrera (C/2016) and Destinee Vigil (Guard/2017) create a trio that will be the dark horse of the bunch.

Ashlynn Trujillo (Guard/2016) and the Los Alamos Lady Hilltoppers will make the group of ten teams in 5A one of the strongest classifications in the state of New Mexico for women's basketball.

Farmington returns their starting line-up including their five leading scorers in what could be the team that makes the Final Four. Brighton Clah (2016) was the leader with 9.1 points and 4.4 rebounds per game.

Belen has a pair of sophomores in Maya Trujillo and Leandra Sanchez that could create a serious contender in a couple years. This will be a growing year but this will be a team you wont be able to sleep on coming off a 20-8, 7-3 season.

Haley Hall (2016/Guard) returns for the Grants Pirates at No. 9. This was the statement regarding Hall "Very smart player, deceptive, scores slashing into the paint and on the break".

Myra Salazar (2016) will look to lead the Lovington Lady Wildcats in 2016 and will place her name among the top players in the state.

GRINE'S CRYSTAL BALL

State Champion: Roswell
Runner-Up: Valencia
Final Four: Roswell, Valencia, Gallup, Los Lunas

Years and years the Lady Coyotes are there, along with Valencia, and this could be a season when they both reach another level.

Joshua J. Grine of NMPreps.com

Today, we take a look at our NMPreps.com Preseason 6A Team Rankings. Throughout the 2015-2016 we will update our rankings as the season progresses.

Week Zero/Week One Top-10 Rankings
1. Cibola
2. Volcano Vista

4. Mayfield
5. Valley
6. Hobbs
7. Eldorado
8. La Cueva

2015-2016 Preview

We will start at the top of our rankings and look at the reigning 6A State Champions in the Cibola Cougars. The Cougars are led by one of the top head coaches in New Mexico basketball, men's or women's and this could be one her most talented teams yet.

Amaya Brown (Sophomore), who will be one of the highest recruited prospects in the state of New Mexico returns for her sophomore season and will be looking to add more hardware. Brown, teams up with division commit (UNLV), Kavionna Brown (Junior) a point guard who is considered one of the best PG's in the state. This duo is just the tip of the iceberg though as we could list the top seven players.

Volcano Vista High School, district foe to Cibola, enters the season at No. 2 on our countdown. The Lady Hawks have one of their own head coaches who is regarded as one of the best in the state. The Lady Hawks return Raven Herrera (2016) and Deezha Battle (2016), two seniors who could be on the upset minds of CIbola.

At, number three we have the Las Cruces Lady Bulldawgs who will return one of the top rosters in the state. Jayden Perez (2018) is one of the top rising prospects in the state of New Mexico. Active on the AAU side, Perez returns as a District 3-6A Player of the Year, All-State player with a 15 points per game average. In the opening game of week one Perez went off for 27-points and 12 rebounds in a win over EP Americas (TX).

Rounding out the top-5 is Mayfield, led by Kendra Butler (2016) and Jayce Gorzseman (2017), as the No. 4 spot in the state. The fifth team in the state is the Valley Vikings who return a wealth of talent in Brianna Roybal (2016), Shanea Shamburger (2016) and Alicia Chavez (2016). The Valley Vikings will have experience returning from a state tournament team.

Mansfield Playoffs

We play Flower Mound Marcus Friday night who beat us 27-17 in opener. We did not have our SR QB and started a Soph who could not throw. SR was being disciplined for being late to practice. The game is being televised live by a local TV station. If we win we will play in Cowboy Stadium next Saturday. Fun times and really cool about the TV broadcast and the possibility of going to Cowboy Stadium. My Grandson is living through the scout team experience and in live sessions they do not protect the QB. He is being toughened for next year to say the least

ENMU to play in Heart of Texas Bowl

There are 167 NCAA II teams and only 28 teams make the playoffs. The remaining bowl eligible teams hope for a spot in 1 of only 4 NCAA DII Bowl Games. ENMU was selected as the Lone Star Conference representative in the Heart of Texas Bowl by being the highest ranked team in the LSC not going to the playoffs.

Preseason Rankings: No. 26 Goddard Rockets

The 2015-2016 season has officially started and today we start our countdown of the top 50 programs in New Mexico Big School Division (6A-4A).

More: Preseason Rankings Home | Rankings 72-51 | Preseason Preview Page

Year two under head coach Anthony Mestas could prove to be a huge one. The Rockets went 13-15, 3-4 last season but have some promising prospects.

Overview: Another coach from District 4-5A quickly put his name on his new program. Mestas has a pair of rings on his fingers and will have the Rockets as a 5A Top-10 team this preseason. The Rockets return a trio of guards that were among the most impressive that we seen this summer. The two highlights are Noah Waide (2016) and Leanthoney Harrison (2017) who can let it fly from the outside but also like to run in transition. These two alone could have them in the Top-25 early after a few big wins.

Last Season
Record: 13-15, 3-4
Home Record: 7-6
Away Record: 3-4
Post Season: First Round; Lost to Farmington (51-49)
Points per game: 54.14 (1516)
Points against: 52 (1456)

Realistic Prediction: I was impressed with Goddard this summer, that should be a given because Mestas has proven to be a winner. Did we think this quick? No, not at all but if they improved any from what we seen this summer the Rockets are a legit Final Four contender. Like Artesia, ranked one higher, they play a tough non-district schedule including a tough district this season. Roswell has company and it's going to be important to win at home. 15-19 win mark and could be a Final Four contender.

District Champ: 71.1%
Playoff Team: 98%
Elite Eight: 80%
Final Four: 49.67%
Title Game: 26%

Returning Players: The two mentioned above are two of the top guards back in 2015-2016 for 5A basketball. Another name is Cal Villareal a 6-1 shooting guard who was right behind Waide (10ppg) and Harrison (9.6 ppg) at 6 points per game.

Roster
Ethan Coombes (2016)
Dylan Dearing (2016)
Noah Waide (2016)
Cal Villareal (2017)
Leanthony Harrison (2017)
Dalin Stanford (2017)
