No. 1 Cleveland defeated No. 12 Sandia 42-7
The Cleveland Storm moved to 5-0 on the season with a 35 point win over Sandia Thursday Night at Wilson Stadium in front of 40mph winds. Gabe Ortega hit Justice Jackson for a 10-yard touchdown pass, the Niko Papadopoulos ran in a 5-yard touchdown to make it 14-0 early in the first quarter. Papadopoulos would finish with over 150-yards rushing on the night. Sandia’s lone touchdown was by Jimmy Gallegos. Cleveland takes on Eldorado next week.
No. 2 Alamogordo @ Gadsden
The now 4-0 Alamogordo Tigers will make the short drive Friday to take on Gadsden in a week 5 match up which they enter as the heavy favorite. Coming off their 46-28 victory against Mayfield, the Tigers are red hot and led by Junior Quarterback Kyle Hooper who has thrown over over 1,200-yards and 12 touchdowns to start the season. The Panthers are 1-3 and coming off a 31-20 win over Santa Teresa.
No. 4 Las Cruces vs. No. 3 Centennial - Friday
Last year the game was epic to put it simply with Centennial winning 49-47. This year the new rivalry game is supercharged with both teams entering Friday Night’s match up a combined 7-1. Las Cruces is coming off a 34-31 victory over Rio Rancho, Centennial is on fire beating up Gadsden, Del Norte, and EP Socorro by a combined 106-20.
No. 5 Artesia @ No. 25 Carlsbad
Artesia is 4-0, Carlsbad is 0-4 the rivalry is still one of the biggest in New Mexico. It’s the Battle of Eddy County at Ralph Bowyer and Coach Cooper Henderson of Artesia vs. 1st Year Carlsbad Coach Gary Bradley presents an interesting storyline. Throw the records and everything you know out the window for this game.
No. 6 Eldorado @ No. 7 Mayfield - Saturday
The Eagles now 4-0 on the season after an impressive win over Volcano Vista 38-21 will head to Mayfield now 3-1 for a Saturday Top 25 showdown. The Trojans are coming off a 46-28 loss to Alamogordo. Last year the score of this game was 50-49 with Eldorado winning in overtime.
No. 8 Volcano Vista defeated Atrisco Heritage 58-28 - Thursday
The Volcano Vista Hawks moved to 3-2 on the season snapping their two game losing streak at Community Stadium. The Hawks racked up more than 450-yards of offense and were led by running back Chris Streez who ran for 216-yards.
No. 10 Clovis @ No. 9 Rio Rancho
Each team is looking for a bounce back week after Clovis lost to Cleveland 50-20 and Rio Rancho lost on the road at Las Cruces 34-31. The two teams are 5-5 since the 2003 season, however Rio Rancho has won the last 5 in a row against Clovis. The last time these two met in Rio Rancho it was a shootout with Rio Rancho winning 62-59 in overtime.
No. 11 Hobbs @ No. 17 Goddard
The Goddard Football Rockets now 2-2 have outscored their last two opponents 89-7 in their last two games after starting out 0-2 under second year Head Coach Mike Whalen. Hobbs has also won two in a row, last weekend the Eagles defeated Onate 41-21, led by Quarterback Isaac Amaya’s 6 touchdown passes. The last time Hobbs beat Goddard was way back in 2007 winning 21-20 under Head Coach Phillip Roybal.
No. 12 Sandia lost to No. 1 Cleveland 42-7 - Thursday
No. 14 Manzano vs. No. 13 Cibola
The Manzano Monarchs had to reel off a late season drive against West Mesa last weekend 21-13 to move to 2-2 on the season. The Monarchs who have won two in a row will take on Cibola who is quite the surprise this year at 3-1. The Cougars defeated La Cueva last weekend 27-14 led by Kayzan Martin who had 140-yards rushing.
No. 16 Piedra Vista vs. Kirtland Central
The 3-1 Piedra Vista Panthers are coming off a 33-13 win over Moriarty and are again the favorite against regional rival Kirtland Central who is 1-3 on the season under first year Head Coach Greg Jenks. The Panthers are led by Junior Quarterback Elijah Gamboa who has over 400-yards of all-purpose offense and 5 touchdowns.
No. 18 La Cueva vs. No. 22 Valley
Who wants to stay in the Top 25 more? Valley now a surprising 0-4 to start the year is needless to say desperate for a win. La Cueva has lost three in a row. If either team wants to to stick around in the playoff talk, win Friday Night.
No. 19 Deming @ Santa Fe
The Wildcats now 2-2 on the season make the long drive to Santa Fe to take on the winless Demons. Last week Deming was beaten 37-0 by Artesia, but in the previous weeks reeled off nice wins against Carlsbad and Silver. The Demons as mentioned are winless after losing to Gallup 46-19 in week 4.
No. 21 Onate vs. West Mesa
The Onate Knights now 0-4 play West Mesa Saturday Night at the Field of Dreams and this is a must win game if Onate wants to keep their playoff hopes alive. The Knights have played a gaunlet of a schedule and are coming off a 41-21 loss to Hobbs. The Mustangs are 1-3 and have lost three in a row falling to Valencia, Eldorado, and to Manzano in consecutive weeks.
No. 23 Farmington vs. Los Alamos
The Scorpions lost their first game of the season last week against Durango, Colorado 39-6. This week they are the back as the favorite against winless Los Alamos. Watch for junior quarterback Kody Becenti who scored 5 touchdowns two weeks ago against Belen.
No. 24 Hatch Valley vs. West Las Vegas
West Las Vegas now 1-3 this season has a tall task taking on Hatch in Hatch, New Mexico this weekend. Against Capital in week 3 the Dons were shutout 48-0. Hatch is 4-0 and has outscored the comp this year 194-49 and they are coming off a 42-6 win over Clint, Texas. Watch for Adrien Grajeda who has rushed for 464-yards and also watch for quarterback Jared Garay who has thrown for 345-yards and rushed for another 120-yards.
4A, 3A, 2A, 8Ma, 6Man Preview
Portales @ Dexter
The Rams could earn another statement win Friday Night against 3-1 Dexter. The Rams have outscored the comp in their last two games 84-0 and also have impressive wins against Lovington and Robertson earlier in the year. Running Back Bronte Staugaard has rushed for 670-yards and 10 touchdowns. The Demons are as hot as anyone in New Mexico. In their last three games they beat Tularosa 42-0, beat Hagerman 50-0, and beat Tucumcari last weekend 50-8. Quarterback Dominic Lomeli has thrown for 546-yards and 9 touchdowns.
NMMI @ Hot Springs
The Colts enter this Friday Night 4A marquee match up at 3-0 after a 49-6 win over Mesilla Valley. The Tigers moved to 4-0 and have plenty of momentum after beating Lordsburg a 3A contender 34-27. Watch for Hot Springs duo Darin Wetly at quarterback and Running Back Nick Moreno. Needless to say, this game will be a big win for either team.
Capital @ Robertson
Big test for the now 3-1 Jaguars heading into Las Vegas, New Mexico Friday Night. Bill Moon’s Capital Jaguars have rolled past Santa Fe and West Las Vegas, but the last 4A power they faced in St. Mike’s beat them 49-20. The Cardinals who started the year 0-2, have won two in a row including an impressive 25-20 over St. Mike’s in Santa Fe last weekend. Watch for Ajray Ortiz on offense and Francisco Arguello at backer who already has 45 total tackles this year.
Anthony @ Lordsburg
While the Lordsburg Mavericks have dropped two in a row, their two losses come against two teams which have a combined record of 8-0. Anthony, TX is 3-1 this season, earlier this year they beat Mesilla Valley 38-0. For the Mavericks watch for Johnny Plowman and Jacob Esquivel, two offensive standouts.
Estancia @ Santa Rosa
The Estancia Bears are riding into Santa Rosa ranked No. 1 in Class 3A by NMPreps.com and the big favorite against the 1-3 Lions. Last weekend the Bears were propelled by Adam Lujan who ran for 466-yards in a 59-7 win over Capitan. The Lions have lost two in a row, last weekend they lost to Hope Christian 20-6.
Hope @ Bloomfield
Marquee match up in Class 4A as Hope now 3-1 after their 20-6 win over Santa Rosa makes the long drive to take on undefeated Bloomfield. The Huskies are led by Caleb Meyer Hagen who has thrown for 695-yards and 10 touchdowns this year. The Bobcats are 4-0 under Bob Allcorn and are coming off a tight 24-19 win over Taos. Brenden Charley has thrown for 400-yards, JD Robinson has rushed for 439-yards and 4 touchdowns for the Bobcats.
Lovington @ Silver
The Wildcats won their first game of the year two weeks ago against Ruidoso and now make the cross state road trip to take on winless Silver. Against Ruidoso, Lovington Quarterback Dallas Stearns accounted for over 300-total yards and 3 touchdowns. The Colts now 0-4 which is very rare for their program is struggling and again they are the underdog at home. They lost to Roswell last weekend 43-8 and to Deming the week before 32-14.
Mesilla Valley @ Jal
The Mesilla Valley Son Blazers are now 2-2 after a 27-21 win over Tornillo, Texas in week 4. Mesilla now makes the very long road trip to take on Jal who replaced their Head Coach Bobby Reed with Caleb Aldrige just days ago. The Panthers have been outscored 78-0 in their last two games.
Saturday 4A, 3A, 2A, 8Man, 6Man Preview
Escalante @ Academy
The No. 1 ranked Lobos in Class 2A head to Albuquerque to take on the Chargers. Escalante has won 14 in a row and beat Raton last weekend 47-6. Quarterback Dominic Montano has thrown for 231-yards and rushed for another 488-yards and has 16 touchdowns this year. The Chargers are 1-2 after beating Bernalillo two weeks ago 47-6.
Grine: Top 25 Questions For Week 5
1. Thursday: Can No. 12 Sandia Avoid a 50-Point Mercy Rule?
The No. 1 Cleveland Storm will take on the No. 12 Matadors. The Matadors (3-1) are currently ranked 12th in the state but are currently 0-1 against Top-10 teams, a 37-3 loss to Volcano Vista during week one. The other three opponents for the Matadors, all wins, are a low 2-10. Also, a 0-4 Valley team put 20 points on the Matadors last week (yes, most came in the fourth quarter) but if they want to make this one last 4-quarters they have to stop an unstoppable team. My over under is this one ends in the third quarter.
2. Can No. 4 Las Cruces win as an "underdog" and is this team more vulnerable than we thought?
Okay maybe this will spark you to disagree and go at me. The Bulldawgs are the No. 4 team in New Mexico this week, taking on the No. 3 Centennial Hawks. The Bulldawgs however are coming into the contest narrowly avoiding two upsets to Volcano Vista (24-21) and Rio Rancho (34-31). So is this team not as dominate as we may have projected? Or have they been finishing the games against quality teams along with having a huge target?
3. Is No. 6 Eldorado a true contender?
We have the chance to get a definite answer, well we hope we get one after this weekends contest. The Eagles take on No. 7 Mayfield down in Las Cruces in a game that will provide viewers another Top-10 bash down south. However, the Eagles have played opponents 3-13 combined. Yes, Last week I asked a similar question to the Eagles in a showdown with Volcano. The upset factor in this one could be defense. Mayfield, minus Carlsbad, has allowed teams to put up points (34-Hobbs, 49-Franklin and 46-Alamogordo). I mention that because the Eagles can score, granted the level of opponent. The thing with the Eagles is the most points allowed was 21 by Volcano. Maybe that is the X-factor, maybe not.
4. No. 9 Rio Rancho only getting better?
We know that they played Las Cruces close last week only falling 34-31. They take on a Clovis team that lost it's first game last weekend. Both teams manage the game well and have Clovis was able to close out the close call against Cibola. This one is a big coin flip and Clovis, even though they lost by 30, didn't get mercy ruled against Cleveland. Rio Rancho played the No. 4 team close and offense seems to be getting better each night. This question was hard to write about as both teams are "odd" right now and I have contradicted myself on who has the edge. Who just jumps out early and holds on to the lead wins. Rio Rancho does seem to be getting stronger as the year goes on, Clovis maybe a roller coaster.
5. Should they be this close at 14 and 13?
On one side the No. 13 Cibola Cougars are the cinderella-underdog-team on set this season. The Manzano Monarchs not so much even at 2-2. The Cougars seem to have the edge and at 3-1 for the right reasons. Maybe you don't agree with that but Clovis still debated by folks as a top-5 team barely escaped the loss with Cibola (14-6). Manzano on the other hand escaped with a win over 1-3 West Mesa last week.

6A Elite
Is the theme in Class 6A really: Cleveland then who? The Storm the NMPreps.com Preseason Favorite and still ranked No. 1 on September 1st, 2015 are 4-0 outscoring the competition 207-56 following their 50-20 win over Clovis at Leon Williams. With impressive wins against El Paso Del Valle 52-36 and Clovis, it’s clear this group is worth the preseason hype and the heavy favorite to continue to dominate Class 6A.
Previous to week 4, the Mayfield Trojans sat at the No. 2 spot before they were upset in Alamogordo by the now 4-0 Tigers 46-28. In his third year as Head Coach at Alamogordo Dale Hooper and the Tigers are 4-0 after their statewide shocking victory placing them as a new contender in Class 6A, in-fact the majority of the NMPreps.com Premium Fan-base voted them No. 2 overall after their week 4 victory. Alamogordo is scoring 51.0 points per game and allowing just 10 points per game on defense.
As usual the Las Cruces Bulldawgs are in the 6A elite discussion and while they are playing a good amount of juniors and sophomores, the Bulldawgs have reeled off 3 impressive wins to start the season. A 46-7 over La Cueva, a 24-21 win over Volcano Vista, and 34-31 win against Rio Rancho has proven they can win the big game, they have a monster match up with undefeated Centennial in week 5 this Friday Night.
Despite graduating Blue Chip Quarterback Zach Gentry who is now red-shirting for Jim Harbaugh at Michigan, Head Eldorado Football Coach Charlie Dotson has continued his winning success as the Eagles enter week 5 at 4-0. Grabbing their first big win over 2015 over Volcano Vista 38-21 in Week 4 grabbed the state’s attention, in week 5 they take on the Mayfield Trojans at the Field of Dreams this Saturday.
6A Still In The Mix
While the Mayfield Trojans now 3-1 were finally defeated by Alamogordo after 22-long years, the Trojans have been a yearly 6A contender and that won’t change after one early season loss. No word on when Running Back Isaac Vance will return, we’ve been told he is sick and also told he is suffering from an ankle injury, whichever the case, once he is healthy the Trojans are as dangerous as anyone in New Mexico.
There are also some .500 level teams that dangerous on any given week: Rio Rancho, Volcano Vista, and Hobbs all fall into this category. The Rams were defeated 34-31 on the road at Las Cruces and have continued to be a top flight program under Head Coach David Howes. Volcano Vista has dropped two in a row, but don’t mistake that for an early season slump, they are dangerous capable of beating anyone in New Mexico, yes they have that much talent. Hobbs defeated Onate this past Saturday 41-21 thanks to 6 touchdown passes from Isaac Amaya. Remember, Hobbs nearly defeated Mayfield and their only other loss is a 38-28 loss at Artesia,
6A Dangerous On Any Given Night
3-1 Clovis, 3-1 Cibola, and 3-1 Sandia have all impressed early on and while they are not getting too much hype, their early season success is noted. The Wildcat’s only loss comes against Cleveland and know this: Clovis held the ball for the first 10 minutes of the game and scored to lead Cleveland 7-0, the first New Mexico team to lead the Storm all year. Rod Williams the Head Coach at Cibola continues to win and while the Cibola Cougars don’t have an overwhelming amount of talent, they have enough speed and athleticism to take most teams down to the wire. Sandia lost their first game of the season to Volcano Vista, but has since played like the preseason Sandia we expected them to be. Three straight wins over Atrisco 51-7, Albuquerque 51-7, and Valley 48-20 have them rolling into their Week 5 match up against Cleveland this Thursday Night.
Chasing Artesia and Centennial in Class 5A
Each Centennial and Artesia are undefeated entering Week 5 and clearly the No. 1 and No. 2 teams within the classification. Now which team is No. 1 overall? That is quite debatable. The Hawks have have beat up on Gadsden, Del Norte, and El Paso Socorro in the last three weeks all by large margins of victory. Quarterback Dante Lopez has been money all year already passing for over 1,000-yards and 10 touchdowns and the defense is giving up just 11.75 points per game. Artesia has won their last 16 out of 17 games is scoring 39.5 points per game, their defense however has been their staple this year allowing just 34 points in 4 games which translates to a 8.5 per game average. Centennial takes on Las Cruces in week 5, Artesia heads to Carlsbad.
So who else in Class 5A? The St. Pius X Sartans are currently undefeated with a 4-0 record and have outscored the comp this year 168-18. They have a ton of veteran players from last year’s team, but we’re still looking for a marquee win from the Sartans. St. Pius X has beaten 2-2 Del Norte, 0-4 Los Alamos, 2-2 Gallup, and 0-4 Bernalillo, however we’ll get a better look at their talent as they take on 3-1 Miyamura in Week 5. Teams like Piedra Vista, Goddard, Miyamura and Farmington are likely next in line. Piedra Vista defeated Goddard back in week 2 and their only loss comes against a very good Durango, Colorado team, Goddard is now 2-2, their losses come against 3-1 Clovis and 3-1 Piedra Vista, in over the last few weeks Goddard has well, looked like Goddard. Miyamura once again is in the 5A mix and just defeated previously unbeaten Grants 33-14 and as long as Running Back AJ Starkovich is healthy, Miaymura is going to be a sleeper. Farmington suffered their first loss of the year in week 4 losing to Durango, Colorado, but 1st year Coach Jeff Dalton looks to have things in order reeling off wins against Los Lunas, Kirtland, and Belen.
4A Parity
Each year 4A causes headaches for me personally. Just when you think you have the Class as a whole figured out, the unexpected happens. For example: Last St. Michael’s 3-0 hosted 1-2 Robertson in Santa Fe, the Cardinals pulled off a 25-20 upset. While this game is a rivalry game, I think it proves my point.
Our Class 4A rankings currently read: 1. Hatch 4-0, 2. Bloomfield, 3. Portales, but I get the feeling they should read: 1. Hatch, 2. Portales, 3 who knows. The Bears have been exceptional this season scoring 194-points and allowing just 49 on defense. Portales is also 4-0 with a big win over Lovington and they have outscored the comp 152-25. Bloomfield is 4-0 and has outscored the comp 180-53, but their week 4 24-19 win over now 1-3 Taos confuses me.
Cobre is 2-2 but has a key win over Robertson, Robertson just beat St. Mike’s, and the Horsemen are still 3-1 after their 5 point loss on Saturday. We also can’t forget about teams like Hot Springs 4-0, NMMI 3-0, and Hope Christian at 3-1. Maybe it’s just way too early to even rank this classification?
Small School Powers: Estancia, Escalante, and Melrose
In the land of the small schools: We have three juggernauts. Estancia the defending Class 3A champ looks even better than they did in 2014 under Stewart Burnett. They beat 5A Lovington in week 1 in Lovington no less, and on the year they have scored 196 points already. Last weekend Adam Lujan their senior tailback ran for 466-yards and scored 4 touchdowns.
In Class 2A the Escalante Lobos are riding a 16-game winning streak under Head Coach Dusty Giles. They have beaten Tucumcari 18-0, Dulce 62-0, Navajo Prep 56-6, and beat Raton last weekend 47-6. Senior Quarterback Dominic Montano has rushed for 488-yards and 10 touchdowns in 4 weeks. The Lobos are on the road this weekend taking on Albuquerque Academy.
Melrose is the Artesia of the 8-Man scene, they just win, all the time. This season they are 4-0 beating Dora 60-8, Cloudcroft 60-6, Mescalero 60-6, and Logan 52-0. Sophomore Cade Banard and Senior Rowdy Allen lead the way. Their could be a storm approaching from Roswell as the Gateway Christian Warriors are also 4-0 outscoring their first four opponents 204-40.
