District Play Starts This Week, Prediction Time

DISTRICT PLAY STARTS, WE PREDICT
Note: This feature started on Monday, September 28th and will be updated through week. Also, we will update through district play with updated records/standings, predictions, stats and scores.

District 1-6A

Predicted Finish
1 Cibola (8-1, 0-0)
2 Volcano Vista (6-4, 0-0)
3 Cleveland (5-7, 0-0)
4 Santa Fe (6-5, 0-0)
5 Rio Rancho (1-9, 0-0)

Why: Cibola is the clear favorite to take the district as the No. 2 team in the state and defending state champion. They are 8-1 and head and shoulders above other teams, Volcano should be a threat but that is unknown right now as the Lady Hawks have been inconsistent at times.

Interesting District Note: Even though they won the title in 6A, the defending champs for district 1-6A is the Cleveland Storm who went an impressive 8-0. Cibola actually went 4-4 finishing in third.

Player of the Year Debate: Hannah Thompson (Cibola), Lyric Ellison (Volcano Vista).

Impressive Stat Leader: Lyric Ellison, Volcano Vista (131 Kills)

District 2-6A
Predicted Finish
1. La Cueva (10-0, 0-0)
2. Eldorado (5-4, 0-0)
3. Sandia (5-4, 0-0)
4. Manzano (6-3, 0-0)
5. Highland (0-10, 0-0)

Why: La Cueva looks unstoppable this season and it will be hard for anyone in this district to stop this train, especially in this district. We projected Sandia to be the threat this preseason but they haven't been the team we predicted.

Interesting District Note: Highland is riding a 37-game losing streak counting back to the 2013 season.

Player of the Year Candidates: Abigail Stomp (La Cueva), Brigette Lowe (Eldorado), Linnea Romero (Sandia)

Impressive Stat: Abigail Stomp, La Cueva (309 assist, 34 Serving Aces)

District 3-6A
Predicted Finish
1. Mayfield (9-3, 0-0)
2. Onate (6-5, 0-0)
3. Las Cruces (6-6, 0-0)
4. Gadsden (6-6, 0-0)
5. Deming (6-5, 0-0)

Why: The Lady Trojans are ranked high and have played well this season. However, this District right now is going to be a battle every night and maybe one of the best. This southern district 1-5 could win any night and if volleyball was like basketball maybe all five would go dancing. Still 3-4 bids should happen but maybe unlikely.

Interesting District Note: Only District with every team over .500 and ranked in the Top-25.

Player of the Year Candidates: Alexis Benda (Onate), Samantha Tuton (Mayfield), Celeste Cox (Las Cruces)

Impressive Stat: Amanda Borden, Deming (109 Kills), Valerie Lopez (153 Assists).

District 4-6A
Predicted Finish
1. Alamogordo (4-8, 0-0)
2. Clovis (3-8, 0-0)
3. Hobbs (4-7, 0-0)
4. Carlsbad (1-11, 0-0)

Why: The Alamogordo Tigers are the only team left in the Top-25 and recently received votes because they topped Top-25 team Las Cruces. This district has seen better days and will be a one bid league (or should be).

Interesting District Note: Unlike the district above, this one of two districts with every team under .500.

Player of the Year Candidates: Namika McCauley (Alamogordo), Jaren Piepkorn (Clovis), Amanda Rotunno (Hobbs)

Impressive Stat: Bryanna Larrea, Clovis (142 Digs)

District 5-6A
Predicted Finish
1 Albuquerque (3-6, 0-0)
2 Valley (4-6, 0-0)
3 West Mesa (4-6, 0-0)
4 Atrisco Heritage Academy (2-8, 0-0)
5 Rio Grande (1-8, 0-0)

Why: Albuquerque right now at 3-6 is our pick but like District 3-6A we had troubles picking with the parity of teams, in this case for the wrong way. No team is the real deal and will likely be a one bid league. Albuquerque High has the one resume booster that gave them the nod with a win over Valencia.

Interesting District Note: No team is ranked in the Top-25 and/or classification rankings.

Player of the Year Debate: Please nominate grinejosh@yahoo.com or post.

Impressive Stat Leader: Marisa Chavez, Atrisco Heritage (123 Digs)

Week Seven: Playoff 12

6A - OUR TWELVE TEAMS
Ranking the Auto Bids

  1. La Cueva (11-0, 1-0): Lock/2-6A Auto
  2. Onate (7-5, 0-0): Lock/3-6A Auto
  3. Volcano Vista (7-4, 1-0): Lock/1-6A Auto
  4. Albuquerque (4-6, 1-0): Lock/5-6A Auto
  5. Alamogordo (4-9, 0-0): Lock/4-6A
Looking at Locks: Right now the District Champ watch goes to these five programs. Plenty of uncertainties in every district right now (minus La Cueva). It was a wild first night of the district season as Volcano Vista upset Cibola and for today shaking up the playoff watch.

Ranking the At-Large - Locks
  1. Cibola (8-2, 0-1): Lock/At-Large
  2. Las Cruces (7-6, 1-0): Lock/At-Large
  3. Mayfield (9-4, 0-1): Lock/At-Large
  4. Eldorado (5-5, 0-1): Lock/At-Large
At-A-Glance, At-Large: Could be an interesting group and could be a shift of teams in this tier and the bottom tire on the bubble watch. Las Cruces actually jumped into the group taking down rival Mayfield on Tuesday night.

The Final 3 Spots - Bubble
  1. Sandia (6-4, 1-0): Bubble-In
  2. Cleveland (5-7, 0-0): Bubble-In
  3. Gadsden (7-6, 1-0): Bubble-In
Bottom-3: This committee will not making people happy this season as the final three spots was difficult and looked hard at the Bubble-Out bunch right now. Gadsden snagged the final spot with a few better wins including the possibility that Alamogordo wins the DC for 4-6A it will only help beating them twice. Sandia more in the Lock group. Cleveland is a tricky one but recent wins over Roswell, Sandia and Las Cruces is a better resume than any Bubble-Out team.

Bubble-Out This Week
Santa Fe (7-5, 1-0)
West Mesa (5-6, 1-0)
Deming (6-6, 0-1)
Manzano (6-4, 0-1)

Thursday Night Preview: Cibola tries for 5-1, La Cueva takes on Del Norte
By: Kyle Henderson of NMPreps.com

Cibola will try for their 5th win of the season tonight taking on Highland

Cibola vs. Highland (Milne)
Cibola Head Football Coach Rod Williams' name has already been mentioned in Coach of the Year discussion after an impressive 4-1 start. Last weekend, the Cougars defeated Manzano in overtime 27-20. The Cougars come into Thursday's match up against Highland as the strong favorite and are led by Gannon Chavez who has thrown for 591-yards on the season, last weekend he threw 4 touchdowns. Kazyan Martin has rushed for 504-yards and 8 touchdowns. The Hornets are 2-3 this year under second year Head Coach Stacy Washington after a big 15-13 win over Albuquerque.

La Cueva vs. Del Norte (Wilson)
La Cueva now 1-4 on the season after a 18-15 loss to Valley will take on Del Norte in what should be an interesting match up. La Cueva is very young this year, but has played teams better than expected. Del Norte at 2-3 lost to Los Lunas last weekend 26-0. Earlier on the season, Del Norte lost Avery See (250 RB/LB) to an undisclosed injury. Parker Herndon has rushed for 219-yards on the year.

Week 6: 4A, 3A, 2A, 8Man, 6Man Watch 2 Watch

Portales is now 5-0 on the season coming off a 56-6 win over Dexter in week 5.

Pojoaque @ Portales
The Portales Rams are ranked No. 2 overall in the NMPreps.com Class 4A Rankings after defeating Dexter 56-6, the week before they beat Eunice 42-0. Again they are the strong favorite against Pojoaque who is 0-5 on the year. Ram’s running back Bronte Staugaard has rushed for 802-yards and 12 touchdowns this year.

Hatch @ Tularosa
The Hatch Valley Bears continue to roll on the season now 5-0 and ranked No. 25 in the NMPreps.com Top 25 Rankings. Last week they beat West Las Vegas 42-7, the week before they beat Clint TX 42-6. Adrien Graheda has rushed for 595-yards, Jared Garay has thrown for 421-yards. Tularosa is 0-5 on the year.

Hope @ Bernalillo
Hope Christian has been quite the surprise this year under Head Coach Gary Beck. The Huskies defeat the Bloomfield Bobcats on the road last weekend 21-6 to move to 4-1 on the season. On the season Quarterback Caleb Meyer Hagen has thrown for 761-yards and 11 touchdowns. Needless to say they are the strong favorite against 0-5 Bernalillo.

Stratford TX @ Clayton
The Clayton Yellowjackets have lost two in a row heading into week 6. They lost to Sunray, TX 32-22 and lost to Texico 20-6 putting them at 2-2 on the year. Justin Taylor has rushed for 623-yards this year, Seth Martinez has 39 total tackles. Stratford is 4-0 this year, last week they beat Bushland 44-19.

Lordsburg @ Cobre
Cobre now 3-2 on the year following their 62-26 win over Aztec is rolling and heads into this regional rivalry game as the two touchdown favorite, which says a lot considering Lordsburg is a very good 3A team. Last week against Aztec Andru Sanchez threw for 401-yards and scored 8 total touchdowns. The Mavericks are 3-2 defeating Anthony, TX last week 20-13. Jacob Esquivel has thrown for 444-yards, Johnny Plowman leads the team in receiving with 189-yards and 1 touchdown.

Jal @ Escalante
The Jal Panthers are 2-3 on the season and 1-0 under New Head Coach Caleb Aldirge as the Panthers were able to beat Mesilla Valley 30-28 in week 5. No. 1 (in 2A) Escalante’s 16 game winning streak was snapped by Academy in a 41-20 loss last week in Albuquerque. Lobo Quarterback Dominic Montano has rushed for 635-yards and 11 touchdowns this year.

Tucumcari @ Eunice
The Rattlers make a road trip in week 6 to take on Eunice. 3A has been a nightmare to figure out, this game from an outsiders perspective is a toss up. The Rattlers are coming off a 28-27 win over Tucumcari in a game where Tyler Ferguson was 8-14 passing for 135-yards and a touchdown. The Cardinals were idle last week and are 1-3 on the season, their lone win is against winless Tularosa.

Boise City OK @ Melrose
No. 1 ranked Melrose in Class 8Man has outscored opponents 282-20 this year, last week they beat Mountainair 50-0, the week before they beat Logan 52-0. Boise City located in Oklahoma is 2-2 this year coming off a 87-52 win over Rolla, Kansas.

Hot Springs @ Mesilla Valley
The Mesilla Valley Son Blazers now 2-3 are coming off a 30-28 loss to Jal and an overtime loss to Tornillo TX. The Hot Springs Tigers are 4-1 under Head Coach Daniel Terrazas after falling to NMMI 23-17 in OT. Watch for offensive duo Nick Moreno and Darin Welty, Tigers are the big favorite in this match up.

Robertson @ Ruidoso
Robertson now 3-2 has clearly found their rhythm heading into the midseason stretch winning three in a row. Their 25-20 win over St. Michael’s and 50-28 victory over Capital in back to back weeks is impressive. Now they travel to Ruidoso who is 2-3. Ruidoso has won two in a row beating Pojoaque 40-12 and Tularosa 36-0. Against the Wildcats last week Junior Running Back Cisco Mayville ran wild for 259-yards and scored 4 touchdowns.

Magdalena @ Tatum
Magdalena is 4-1 on the season following two big blowout victories. Against Ramah two weeks ago they won 54-0, then last week they beat Tse Yi Gai 75-0. Tatum is 3-1 on the year and coming off a 47-20 win over Springer.

Raton @ West LV
Now with a record of 2-3, the Raton Tigers will head to Las Vegas, New Mexico to take on the Dons who are 1-4. The Tigers are coming off a 45-28 victory over Questa, West Las Vegas lost to Hatch 42-7.

Socorro @ Academy 2PM - Saturday
It looks as though Head Coach Quevin Redding now in his second year as a Head Coach at Socorro has turned things around with a record of 3-1 entering week 6. Remember, last year Socorro was 0-10. The Warriors defeated Pojoaque last week 53-18. The Academy Chargers are 41-20 with a win over Escalante and have a season record of 2-2.

Recruiting News September Update

A few notes I've been meaning to get out
  • Valley's Teton Saltes I hear is committing soon. I'm hearing the 6-foot-6, 245 pound DE will likely choose Oregon.

  • Los Lunas Running Back O'Maury Samuels continues to get interest letters from D-1 programs. He holds an offer from NMSU, Notre Dame and New Mexico have contacted him.
  • Alamogordo Receiver Julian Segura is getting heavy interest from NMSU and UTEP as of late. NMSU was watching Segura and the Tigers this past Friday I am told.
  • Onate LB Forest McKee is being recruited by Arizona and will attend a game in Tucson, AZ soon
  • Clovis Quarterback Daulton Hatley picked up offer No. 4 last night from: Southeastern Oklahoma State University. He also holds offers from: NW Okla. State, Univ. Central Oklahoma, and Eastern New Mexico.

W7 Tuesday: District Play Starts Off With a Bang

Boom: La Cueva over Eldorado, 3-1: This gets the early boom because the Eagles provided some light to the dominating Bears. The Eagles took set one 25-19 giving the early alert report before the Bears took the next three games. However, some vulnerability was shown as it was close throughout. \

Boom, Boom: Volcano Vista over Cibola, 3-1: Down goes the No. 3 team in the land! The Hawks who have constantly been criticized for been inconsistent shoved it in the medias face (me) with this huge win. The Lady Cougars, losing this game, will make a headache of the rankings for week-8.

Bang: Las Cruces over Mayfield, 3-1: Well, the Bulldawgs also in the conversation for being inconsistent just helped their playoff case but also causing what could essentially be the headache coming to the top-12 seeds for the state tournament. Parity anyone?

Bang, Bang - Boom: Los Lunas over Centennial, 3-0: "Down goes Frazier, Down Goes Frazier", we thought it was impossible but the Lady Hawks of Centennial lost it's first game to a New Mexico team. The Los Lunas Tigers who were a bit disrespected being ranked low in the Top-25 should proved that they should be in the conversation of contenders for the 5A Title. They make things interesting with this big win.

Helping Their Case For State

Santa Fe over Rio Rancho helps their case for one of the 12-spots.
Valencia maintains spot with win over Chaparral.
Miyamura has a good record, can they continue to roll. They top Gallup.
Hatch over Socorro, 3-0.
Ruidoso maybe making their stride, make it look easy against Lovington, 3-0.
