Mercy Rules...Like Them Or Hate Them?

Friday night is not even here yet and there have already been games stopped because of the mercy rule. Last night the Eunice Cardinals varsity team lost to the Hobbs JV 55-0 with over 8 minutes left in the game. Eunice has a new coach and system but a proud and productive program and past. They even have by far the finest and most awesome looking field house in this entire state. Not long ago it was a big upset if the Hobbs JV beat the Eunice varsity. So, what are the benefits and detriments of the mercy rules. Since I absolutely hate the rules I will detail a few issues against them. Plus, I think everyone knows what the positive sides are supposed to be. Here are my top 10 problems with the mercy rules. #1. A struggling team, or a team with a new coaching staff and/or system needs every play they can get to implement and learn that system and get confidence in themselves. Saying to them...you are just so bad that we need to send you home to mommy is just not helpful. In fact, it is very destructive. Charliedog's descriptive word of wussification is spot on. #2. Unfortunately, it is not just all about the football kids or basketball kids with schools that have programs with good support and cash flow systems. Other kids get "punished" also such as the halftime performers, bands, dance teams and on and on. They work very hard for weeks before school starts and just to brush them off at halftime and say we are leaving is just dumb and destructive to the core. #3. Radio coverage and live streams are not cheap. They provide those services from advertising revenues and have contracts to live up to. To just slam the door on those supporters, advertisements and broadcasts is a jaw dropping concept. #4. Other forms of advertising such as billboards, program sales, shooting t-shirts with sponsors printed on them into the crowd and on and on are also badly impacted. #5. Concessions, food services, programs sales and team merchandise sales are huge money makers that take a ton of effort to provide and are greatly damaged by just locking up and going home. #6. Some schools produce money-making raffle events for things like cars and trips to Dallas Cowboy games and most of those sales happen at halftime and after. #7. NM is a huge state with very few teams and thusly very long travel situations occur. It is not unusual for teams to have to travel 300-600 miles round trip. To put that much expense and effort into playing a game and then be forced to leave early is just an amazing concept. #8. Often, post game meals must be provided for teams traveling a long distance and those have to be scheduled. You just don't show up somewhere with 50-80 folks plus some of their fans and say sorry but we are way early. Let's eat! #9. Many fund raisers for other events and programs are also held and again most of those revenues are raised at halftime and after. Football and basketball games are the best events to have tie-on fund raisers for lesser attended sports and other various school events and programs. #10. The mercy rule teaches the kids that is OK and acceptable to just quit if things are not going well. Probably the worst message we can send to kids today. So, stop physical activity, go bury yourselves for even more hours on electronic devices and smoke pot. Like kids today need another excuse for any of that.

Game of the Week

Hot or Not Feature: It's Early But Six Red Hot

Today, we just take a quick spotlight and a few teams who are red hot to start the season. Yes, even only a game or two in this year we will take a look as team progress throughout the year.

UNRANKED BUT NOT UNKOWN NOW

Roswell (1-0): Yes, it was only a single game but the way that the Lady Coyotes demolished No. 19 Ruidoso was unexpected. In the first game it was (25-5) followed up by (25-12, 25-14) in the final two games of this match.

Santa Teresa (2-0): During week one they did work with the sweep over 6A-Deming, 3-0. This week they continued putting in the work topping 4A-Hatch Valley, 3-0.

Miyamura (1-0): Not much credit was given to the Lady Patriots of Miyamura during the preseason coverage. For a matter of fact we (I) picked them last in District 1-5A. The Patriots did work beating Belen during the opener, 3-1.

RANKED BUT NOT SATISFIED

No. 12 Mayfield (2-0): The Trojans hit the road in the opening two games and they immediately put their stamp on the season. During week one they took out Carlsbad 3-0 (25-9, 25-19, 25-12) and controlled the entire game. This week they beat up on the Tigers early (25-14) followed by (25-19, 25-22) games but have proven to be a team to reckon with.

No. 24 Santa Fe (1-0): Well, I had to add them here because I counted them out as a possible upset alert watch to the unranked Valencia Jaguars. The Lady Demons went down early but recovered to win the final three games winning the match, 3-2 on the road.

No. 3 Centennial (2-1): Even though they lost the opener the Lady Hawks have recovered in impressive fashion taking out Gadsden and Hobbs with ease.

Thursday Night Games: Eldorado vs. Rio Grande Featured

Eldorado does it big in season opener, 52-0 over Ravens
Login to view embedded media
Thursday Night the Eldorado Eagles moved to 1-0 on the year defeated the Rio Grande Ravens 52-0 in a game that was over early in the 3rd quarter. The Eagles much bigger, faster, and strong got on the board early and often. A Noah Swietzer touchdown run, a Jayce Jackson touchdown pass to David Inman, and a Alias Baker (259 pound RB) touchdown made a route and it was 30-0 after the 1st quarter. The Eagles are back in action next week against West Mesa, Rio Grande will take on Highland.
Players that stood out
Jayce Jackson QB - Eldorado
Noah Sweitzer RB/LB - Eldorado
David Inman - WR - Eldorado
Alias Baker - RB - Eldorado
Isaiah Martinez ATH - Eldorado

Quick Thoughts On Week 2

WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY

Wed: Sandia Prep over Pojoaque Valley
Corona over NMMI, 3-0
Pagosa Springs (CO) over Farmington, 3-0
Hobbs 3, Belen 0
Tohatchi 3, Ramah 0
Piedra Vista over San Juan (UT), 3-2
Roswell over Portales, 3-0
Ruidoso JV over Mescalero, 3-0
Texico over Lubbock Christian (TX), 3-0
Tucumcari over Pecos, 3-1
West Las Vegas over Mora, 3-0

I will update "Grine Picks" portion with the added game finals from Tuesday but I can tell you that I am right around .500.

Tucumcari rebounds well from the Fort Sumner loss beating fellow 3A team Pecos, 3 games to 1. Texico is the favorite and they came out in style with a sweep of Lubbock Christian TX). West Las Vegas is said to be one of the best teams in 4A, they proved dominance against Mora in one of those contests that they should.

Roswell again proves to be on the rise or maybe they just were underestimated with being unranked in the Top-25. Hobbs got on the board for W's with a sweep of Belen after losing to Gadsden and Centennial.

TUESDAY, AUGUST 25th

Americas (TX) over Onate, 3-0 (Game 2) (Grine: 0-0; I didn't pick game - not on their schedule)
Centennial over Gadsden, 3-0 (Grine: 1-0)
Franklin (TX) over Las Cruces, 3-0 (Grine: 1-1; I never pick against NM)
Hondo Valley over NMMI, 3-0 (Grine: 1-2)
Loretto (TX) over Onate, 3-2 (Grine 1-2)
Magdalena over Socorro, 3-2 (Grine:1-3)
Mayfield over Alamogordo, 3-0 (Grine: 2-3)
Roswell def. Ruidoso, 3-0 (Grine: 2-4)
Santa Fe over Valencia,3-2 (Grine: 2-5)
Santa Rosa over East Mountain, 3-0 (Grine: 3-5)
Silver over Lordsburg, 3-0 (Grine: 4-5)
Tohatchi over To'hajiilee, 3-0 (Grine: 5-5)

No. 3 Centennial completely dominated on Tuesday night in the win over No. 20 Gadsden. It was mentioned to me by a 6A coach that they are the best team in the state. They are proving that as they love to 2-1.

No. 12 Mayfield (2-0) had looked solid and controlled both matches with ease to open the season. They have been on the road and this team could be a dark horse. Take notice early.

No. 24 Santa Fe went down early to Valencia but stormed back to take this one on the road. Still an unknown team for the most part but will fight it out as they beat a quality opponent.

Roswell with a walk in the part win as the unranked Coyotes proved us wrong by taking it to the Ruidoso Lady Warriors. Maybe the Coyotes are the real deal in 4-5A.

We will likely see some mass shake-up in the week three NMPreps.com rankings. Mayfield could be on the rise while Ruidoso might suffer some set back.

And for the bad news on my end, if this was Vegas, I came out .500 for the picks so far on the games that have sent in scores. I guess I am okay with that for my first week of Volleyball games. However, I was close on the Valencia game, came down to the wire. I totally bought in early on Las Cruces from last weeks win. Hondo is a solid 1A squad, NMMI struggling early. Lastly, Roswell shut me up for one not ranking them in the Top-25 and second for picking against them. Ouch. Well, 5-5 so far it can only go up from here..right??
