Who Wins: Hobbs vs Mayfield | Sandia vs Volcano Vista | Onate vs Centennial | Goddard vs. Clovis

1. Cleveland Storm vs. Manzano
The Storm host a young Manzano team Friday Night to open the season. Though Cleveland is the large favorite Manzano is a team with a few home run hitters and plenty of speed. Target clearly is on Cleveland’s back, they are suppose to win, and when the No. 1 starts looking ahead it can create turbulence. Expecting Manzano’s defense to be overwhelmed by Cleveland’s size and feel that the Monarchs is going to struggle containing Quarterback Gabe Ortega who had at times 5-10 seconds to throw against La Cueva in week 0. Hard to see this game being close after halftime.

2. Mayfield Trojans @ Hobbs
Last year it felt like the game was played on the surface of the sun being played Saturday at the Field of Dreams and after the game Mayfield Head Coach Michael Bradley mentioned that his team was lucky to get out of there with a win. Though the Trojans enter the season as the No. 2 team overall by NMPreps.com they do graduate Quarterback Kavika Johnson who had a field day against the Eagles last year. Quarterback Joeray Valencia will make his debut behind a veteran Mayfield Offensive Line. Mayfield’s defense (secondary) is going to be tested and we’re expecting a ton of points, last year’s game featured 90.

3. Rio Rancho Rams @ Valley
The defending Class 6A champs will take their 13 game winning streak on the road against Valley a team they blasted last year 55-0. A ton of names graduated from Rio Rancho, but the Rams return their entire coaching staff and a ton of new names capable of holding the rope. Watch for guys like Quarterback Steven Bailey, Running Back Josh Foley, and Receiver Brian Drake to shine, and of corse the offensive line is anchored by 6-foot-7, 255 pound Grant Hermanns. Their defense is likely their strength and it’s easy to highlight their linebacker and secondary units as they should be the difference in this game. Watch for Vincent Palmeri LB and Santiago Salazar DB

4. Las Cruces Bulldawgs @ EP Montwood
We titled the headline of our 2015 Preseason Preview on Las Cruces “Dawgs enter the year with chip on their shoulder” and it’s clear by reading the banter on the message board fans feel Las Cruces isn’t what Las Cruces used to be. Maybe that is a little overstated, but Las Cruces has to excited to get out onto the field (Maybe not at 4PM on Friday), to earn some redemption from losing 6 games in 2014. As we’ve noted countless times Las Cruces returns quarterback Kameron Miller playing in his final season and watch for new names like Payton Ball and Brandon Baeza to contribute on offense. Look for Defensive End Vincent Delgadillo to provide pressure and if Cory Noel is healthy, he’s an outstanding linebacker. Tough road trip in week 1

5. Centennial Hawks vs. Onate
42-10 last year was the score Centennial beat Onate by. While last year is last year, that score was shocking and you have to think it's a bit closer this year granted that Onate should be much better. Centennial has arrived and while they lose some offensive potency coming into the season Head Coach Aaron Ocampo is a master at grooming quarterbacks to just pick up where the last one left off and now it's Dante Lopez's turn to take over the offense. We've talked about their offensive line al summer, but their defensive unit is salty as well. Jerry Gurrola is a top defensive end along with 245 pound Marcus Minnick which will create trouble in Onate's backfield, also watch for linebacker Jake Boykin. This will be a fun one.

6. Artesia Bulldogs @ Belen
Writing this preview it just feels like Artesia is going to bust this game wide open from the get-go. The Bulldogs have scored 89 points total in their last two games against Belen. All eyes will be on new running back for Artesia Jesse Gallegos to see if he can shoulder the load replacing Eastern New Mexico Commit Travis Wilkinson. Of course the defensive coordinator for Belen will be trying to figure how to stop Justin Houghtaling at quarterback. Watch for Artesia's linebackers to have a good showing: Jacob Enriquez along with Grant Duff are players.

7. Sandia Matadors vs. Volcano Vista
Very good Metro Match Up taking place tonight and Sandia has to be thinking revenge for their loss to Volcano Vista 18-14 in 2014. The Matadors look to have a excellent run game with Jimmy Gallegos and Dominic Baca as scat-like backs behind a massive offensive line. Think the question is can Sandia's defense stop Volcano Vista's passing attack? Those same two names we mentioned in Jimmy Gallegos and Dominic Baca will be busy in the secondary Wednesday Night. Shootout potential? Not likely, but if so Sandia should have enough offense, remember they scored over 28 points 8 times last year.

8. Eldorado Eagles vs. Rio Grande
The storyline here is Eldorado's new offensive attack. Sure they lose Zach Gentry the Michigan Quarterback commit, but they return some of fastest and most dynamic athletes in the district which will be all over the field. Guys like Jayce Jackson QB, Noah Swietzer RB/LB, Isaiah Martinez RB/DB, and David Inman RB/WR/LB are all capable of carrying this team to a district championship. Last week against Rio Rancho 250 pound linebacker/fullback Elias Baker turned heads. Think Rio Grande is going to be in trouble quickly.

9. Goddard Rockets @ Clovis
Goddard ran through Clovis last year winning 34-14 and while I don't think the Rockets will take much of a step back from last year's team it's going to be very difficult to win at Leon Williams Friday Night as Clovis returns quite a few on offense. With that said we're all anxious to see new quarterback Cameron Stevenson in action and by the looks of it their running game hasn't taken a drop off as Lukas Gutierrez looked outstanding against Miyamura. On defense Ethan Featherstone is a name we keep repeating and Gaylon Young impressed at defensive end last week as well. Will depth come into play against Clovis, that is the looming question mark.

10. Volcano Vista Hawks vs. Sandia
Is the best Volcano Vista team yet? Or are we just hyping up another West Side Metro School entering the season? Those questions will be answered as we move forward and the Hawks have a big opportunity tonight against Sandia. This Hawks team has plenty of multi year starters including a three year starting quarterback in Josh Williams who looked outstanding against Los Lunas in week 0. Keep an eye on Chris Streetz at running back as he is taking over for Dominico Chavez (big shoes to fill here). On defense Volcano Vista has enough talent to hold Sandia's offensive ground game and their secondary should be able to play man all night long. If Volcano Vista wins it's because they come up with some big defensive plays Wednesday Night.

11. Clovis Wildcats vs. Goddard
If you caught my week 1 bold pick it's taking Clovis over Goddard, but is that really bold? Not really, as Clovis should win this game every year. Much larger enrollment, always more kids out for football, big budget, etc. However last year the Wildcats were rocked at the Wool Bowl losing by 20. This year Clovis has even more an edge with returners like QB Daulton Hatley, TE Roland Chavez, WR Tucker Dobbs, and RB Micah Gray Returning. It's not their offense that concerns me. The question mark is can 11 new starters on defense stop Goddard's powerful run game?

12. Onate Knights vs. Centennial
In terms of two teams that just can't wait to get out there and hit each other, these two want it more than anyone else this weekend. Onate vs. Centennial is a brewing rivalry and after Onate was embarrassed by Centennial 42-10 in the first ever meeting last year, the Knights want this game bad. Onate is going to pound the rock up the middle with fullbacks Matt Young at 220 pounds and Forest McKee at 210 pounds, will that work against Centennial's beefed up defensive line? The Knights defense should be up for the task of stopping Centennial. They have some tremendous head hunters especially in their front seven. Take extra popcorn for this one.

13. Alamogordo Tigers vs. Valencia
What excitement third year Head Coach Dale Hooper has brought to Alamogordo. The Tigers return 16 starters into the season and their offensive attack is second to none led by Junior Kyle Hooper who threw for over 2,500-yards in 2014. The only way this game is close is if Valencia plays keep away and New Valencia Head Coach Collin Justiss (Former Clayton Head Coach) is known to do just that. The Tiger's defense looked to be good sized and their linebacker play is very solid. Likely, Alamogordo fans are expecting a route.

14. Manzano Monarchs @ Cleveland
The Monarchs are young, but that does not mean they are not talented. Sure everyone is going to pick against Manzano in the opening week taking on Cleveland, but the Monarchs have speed and what do they say about speed? It can kill you. Quarterback Orlando Perez is a gamer and they have some good linemen on both sides of the football. Their offense likely going to take a few stabs at Cleveland's secondary, but it's up to Manzano's defense to keep this game close. Contain and force everything up the middle is the theme of the night.

15. Hobbs Eagles vs. Mayfield
This game has the most hype by far, with Hobbs fans already sitting in the stands awaiting the No. 2 ranked Trojans. The Eagles best case to win this game is to get the momentum early and get into a scoring fest as soon as possible. The Eagles have enough weapons to score pretty much at will with returners like Quarterback Isaac Amaya and Running Back Jeremy Padilla returning. The Eagles defense, especially in the secondary should own the skies if Mayfield has to start going deep with a veteran bunch returning, however they can't forget about the Trojan's game breaking running back in Isaac Vance. Hobbs is believing, it's a long road trip, it's Friday Night, anything can happen.

16. La Cueva Bears vs. Atrisco Heritage
No way to spin it the La Cueva Bears are very young with just 8 seniors on the roster. Their junior and sophomore class is going to have to have to step, especially the defense against Atrisco Heritage as the Jaguars will have the fastest quarterback in the state on the field in Aaron Bean. Look for La Cueva to keep in on the ground and utilize power running back Josh Woison as much as possible.

17. Cibola Cougars vs. Albuquerque
This is a very young and unknown Cibola Cougars team and after graduating a ton of talent, who will step up and help them get back to the playoffs. Their defense will have a tall task stopping Albuquerque High on Saturday, but you have to think Cibola is still the favorite to win this match up. Paging Jacob Smith...

18. Valley Vikings vs. Rio Rancho
The Vikings return a good nucleus into the 2015 season and it was just two-seasons ago when the Vikings won 10 games, so missing the playoffs in 2014 should not of settled well. From what we heard the Viking's offense looked ready to go against Manzano in week zero, watch for new quarterback Isaiah Chavez to step up along with D-1 bound Defensive Linemen Teton Saltes.

19. Atrisco Heritage Jaguars vs. La Cueva
The Jaguars finally graduated that monster senior class that helped the Jaguars back to the playoffs in 2014 and though names like Ricci Alvidrez and James Romero will no longer be called, look for Quarterback Aaron Bean to carry the tradition along with fullback Darius Moore. Atrisco Heritage still has some players of high caliber to edge out La Cueva in week 1.

20. Belen Eagles vs. Artesia
The Eagles graduated just a ton of talent, anytime you lose over 25 seniors it's going to be tough to rebuild, however Head Belen Coach John Lerma has proven he can continue to win at Belen yearly. They will have to tighten up the defense as Artesia has scored 49 and 40 in their last two match ups, Belen's best shot to keep it close is to run the football and sit on it.

21. St. Pius X Sartans vs. Del Norte
Really excited to see St. Pius X hit the field in 2015 as they have a ton of returning talent from a team that won 8 games in 2014. Long time Head Coach San Juan Mendoza has a senior laden group with a big time junior quarterback in Drew Ortiz and a receiver named Miles Hilton that caught for over 700-yards as a junior. Sartans will have to prepare for 240 pound running back Avery See out of Del Norte.

22. Albuquerque vs. Cibola
One of the better stories of the 2015 season was Head Coach Curtis Flakes leading the Bulldogs to break their 40+ game losing streak. That season is over and while Albuquerque is still young in the stages of building their program, they have some playmakers capable of doing big things on Saturday against Cibola. Watch for quarterback Riley Padilla and athlete Jonathan Martinez.

23. Deming Wildcats @ Flowing Wells AZ
The Deming Wildcats open the season in Arizona against Flowing Wells. In week zero the Wildcats were led by quarterback Dante Urrea who scored 2 touchdowns against Centennial. This will be an interesting match up to open the season, but Head Deming Coach Fernie Olguin has managed to keep Deming in the mix yearly.

24. Carlsbad Cavemen @ EP Americas
The Cavemen head to El Paso to take on Americas. In 2014 the Trailblazers defeated Carlsbad 35-19 and it will be interesting to see what first year Head Coach Gary Bradley runs offensively in week 1. Will it be option, will there be a more balanced attack, there are plenty of good story lines. This game could set the tempo for 2015, don't think many expect Carlsbad to win, which should work well in their favor.

25. Gadsden Panthers vs. EP Del Valle
Tough opening game of the Panthers taking on El Paso Del Valle a team that went 11-2 during the 2014 season and even beat Cleveland. Maybe Gadsden's scrimmage against a loaded Canutillo will prepare them for another up-hill battle.

4A, 3A, 2A, 8Man Week 1 Preview
By: Kyle Henderson of NMPreps.com

St. Mike’s @ Santa Fe
One of the oldest rivalry games in the State of New Mexico should be packed Friday Night at Ivan Head Stadium. Last year the Horsemen took it to the Santa Fe Demons 28-14. Two players to watch include: Xavier Vigil the Horsemen’s 200 pound Running Back/Linebacker and Santa Fe Linebacker Bailey Lozada Cabbage.

Clayton @ West Las Vegas
How will Clayton respond under first year Head Coach Dusty Tippit? That is the key question as there is no question that the Yellowjackets still return a ton of talent into the season. Watch for running back Jose Zamora. The West Las Vegas Dons went 3-7 last year and were blown out by Clayton 51-6. However the Dons showed improvement late in the season, we’re guessing this game is much closer.

Cobre @ Morenci AZ
The Indians are coming off a 10-4 season reaching the state title game under Jerry Martinez. Last year they beat Morenci 20-7 and return quite a bit of talent which again puts them as their week one opponent. Watch for Dominic Redwine and for Corey Roberson at running back to step up for Cobre.

Hatch @ Dexter
Easy to like the Hatch Bears again going into the 2015 season. One reason is because they are coached by one of the best in the business in Jack Cisco, the other reason is because they return offensive play makers like Jared Garay and Adrian Grajeda. Dexter is led by first year Head Coach Kevin Graham (former Kirtland Central Head Coach) and watch for Demon Senior Quarterback Dominic Lomeli.

Mountainair @ Magdalena
The Magdalena Steers should again be primed to make a run to the 8-Man playoffs or even finals. They went 10-1 last year and return a ton of talent including Quarterback Mike Chambers. Last year the Steers buried Mountainair 58-8.

Robertson @ Portales
Always an excited match up when these two teams get it on. Last year the Cardinals won this match up 33-20 and finished these season 10-1 with an early exit in the playoffs. The Cardinals are led by Mathew Baca at running back and watch for JR Gonzalez and Francisco Arguello to be their leaders. For Portales, watch for prime time running back Bronte Staaguard, one of the top play makers in Class 4A.

Silver @ Capital
Not sure when the last time these two teams met, if ever. Whatever the case Capital seems to be much improved and ready for the challenge of taking on a continued power in Class 4A, the Fighting Colts who went 9-4 in 2014. The Jaguars will look to their one-two punch in Quarterback Augustine Larranaga and Running Back Kevin Brown. Silver is led by Jeremiah Burke a legit 4.4 athlete and linebacker Chad Flower.

Texico @ Santa Rosa
It feels like this is always a playoff game and you can expect the parking lot to be full in Santa Rosa Friday Night as the Lions host the Wolverines. Santa Rosa won this game last year 25-12, but it looks like Texico returns quite a big into 2015, most notably watch for Mason Golden, their 215 pound linebacker/running back.

Tularosa @ Hot Springs
Good rivalry game that should be no different this year. The Tigers beat the Wildcats last year 20-13. With home field on the Tiger’s side along with running back Nick Moreno ready to go, edge goes to the Tigers.

Hope @ Academy
This game will take place Saturday Morning at 11AM on the beautiful football field at Richard Harper Memorial. Academy now independent will take on Hope Christian. You would think this game is a rivalry game, but they have not played since 2012. Hope won that game 20-12. Watch for Academy Running Back Clay Crosby and Hope Christian Quarterback Caleb Myer Hagen.

Tatum @ Logan
Last year the Logan Longhorns blew this game wide open winning 54-16. Logan went on to go 12-1 on the season and return quite a bit of talent into the 2015 season. New name to know from Logan is Brinton Roach who had over 1,200 all purpose yards in 2014.

Melrose vs. Dora
The defending 8-Man state champs will take on Dora Friday Night and enter as the clear favorite to make a run at the title. Watch for 6-foot-3, 200 pound athlete Cade Banard.

What To Watch In Week 1
By: Kyle Henderson of NMPreps.com

Who Wins: Hobbs vs Mayfield | Sandia vs Volcano Vista | Onate vs Centennial | Goddard vs. Clovis

Defending State Champs Kickoff
The Class 6A Defending Champs Rio Rancho entering the season riding a 13 game winning streak and will take on Valley Friday at Community Stadium. New quarterback Steven Bailey takes over for Easton Bruere who threw for over 4,500-yards in 2014. In Class 5A the Artesia Bulldogs will head to Belen where they ended the 2014 season beating the Eagles 49-21. The Bulldogs lose Eastern New Mexico Running Back Commit Travis Wilkinson, but return 6-foot-5 Quarterback Justin Hougtaling who threw for 3,400-yards as a junior. The Class 4A defending champs the Ruidoso Warriors hosting the Roswell Coyotes. Ruidoso won this match up in a thriller last year 21-20 and enter the season riding a 7-game winnings streak. The Estancia Bears went 11-3 last year under Head Coach Stewart Burnett winning the 3A state title and will be on the road playing at Lovington. It’s the first time the two schools have met on the gridiron. The Escalante Lobos aka the 2A defending state champs will be on the road against Tucumcari, the Lobos return quarterback Dominic Montano who ran for over 2,000-yards as a junior. In 8-Man the Melrose Buffs will take on Dora, Hondo Valley will take on Grady/San Jon.

All Eyes On These Games
The 2015 New Mexico High School Football Season opens up Wednesday Night at Community Stadium in Albuquerque as the Sandia Matadors take on Volcano Vista. Each team returns a wealth of returners and it was a thriller last year with the Hawks winning 18-14. Carlsbad will make their debut under Head Coach Gary Bradley playing on the road against El Paso Amercias who beat the Cavemen last year 35-19. La Cueva and Atrisco Heritage play Friday in a game that features two teams from the Metro Area that suffered a great deal to graduation. Atrisco Heritage does return dual threat quarterback Aaron Bean who could be the difference maker. The Las Cruces Bulldawgs will be on the road playing the No. 2 ranked team out of El Paso, the Montwood Rams. Start time for that game is Friday at 4PM at the SAC. This will be Las Cruces starting quarterback Kameron Miller’s first game back since October of 2014 after having knee surgery. The No. 1 preseason team in New Mexico the Cleveland Storm who looked like the real deal against La Cueva in week zero will host the Manzano Monarchs. It’s game of experience vs. youth as Manzano will start 6 sophomores. As mentioned the returning Class 6A state champs Rio Rancho will be on the road against Valley, last year Rio Rancho beat Valley 55-0. Alamogordo will get to flex their muscle on their new turf taking on the Valencia Jagaurs who will be led by first year Head Coach Collin Justiss.

Marquee Match Ups
Taking place at Watson Memorial this Friday Night is a monster match up between the Hobbs Eagles who are hosting the State’s No. 2 ranked team in Mayfield. The Trojans enter the season having made the last two big school state championship games and look high powered once again. The Hobbs Eagles under now 4th year Head Coach Charles Gleghorn impressed in week 0 scored 8 touchdowns to Belen’s 0. Last year the game featured a ton of penalties and a ton of points with Mayfield winning 55-35. Goddard and Clovis at Leon Williams is about as tradition rich as you can get in New Mexico. Last year the Rockets won 34-14 at the Wool Bowl, however this match up is one that can go either way. The Wildcats are led by a host of senior offensive returners, last year as a sophomore Micah Gray ran for 1,200-yards. Goddard enters the season having just 8 seniors on their roster. Centennial vs. Onate is already a rivalry game though they have played just once which was last year, Centennial took it to the Knights winning 42-10. The Field of Dreams was packed for this game last year and with both teams ranked within the NMPreps Top 15 it’s should be 48 minutes of big time Las Cruces Football. Centennial is led by Junior Quarterback Dante Lopez who scored 4 touchdowns last weekend against Deming, Onate is led by 6-foot-0, 215 pound linebacker Forest McKee.

Feature: Grine on Week 2, Player of The Week and Week 3 Rankings

Welcome to another Sunday NMP Nation! The volleyball season is starting to get its wheels turning, with a busy week in New Mexico. Teams moved up, some down and other are new to the Top-25 (26 if you have viewed the rankings). Makes for a fun day recapping the week.

More: Week 2 in Rewind | Week 3 Top-25 Rankings | Week 2 Scoreboard

Week Two: Some Teams On The Rise, Others Not So Much

Team of the Week: Roswell (2-0)

Yes, we know that the Lady Coyotes opening victories are over 4A programs. However, the Lady Coyotes opening win was over (previous ranked No. 19) Ruidoso Lady Warriors. The Lady Coyotes not only won its opening games, they did it in convincing fashion.

Alright, I See You: Magdalena (3-0)
Making the surprise visit at the top of our story is the 2A Magdalena Steers. The Steers started the season off with back-to-back wins over Socorro but the reason you see this little engine that could is the upset of then Top-25 ranked (No. 22) Aztec High School. The Steers shocked the volleyball community with a win over a Top-25 team.

Night and Day: Gadsden (1-1)
The Lady Panthers fell in the rankings for week-3 as we are still unsure who this Panthers team is at the moment. They breeze past Hobbs (3-1) but didn't show well to Centennial (0-3). Yes, Centennial is the third ranked team in New Mexico but we wanted a fight. Junior Lauren Sifuentes (2017/MH) right now is a name to know for the Lady Panthers.

They Moved Up? Cleveland (0-1)
Okay, yes we know that the Lady Storm lost last week to East Lake (TX) but it was a move up by subtraction. Other teams just didn't have enough to jump other teams, with Rio Rancho falling.

Free Falling: Rio Rancho (0-1)
Well, Storm lose and move up a spot. The reason Rio Rancho fell drastically is the loss to 5A Artesia (1-2) that is hanging on at the ledge of the Top-25.The Rams are one of those unknown teams for the season and this loss hurt.

Staying Seated: 3A Rankings
In 3A all the teams stayed 1-5 and the highlight right now could be the Santa Rosa Lady Lions (or Lioness) with a 2-0 start with wins over 4A East Mountain and 3A Estancia.

Shake 'Em Up, Shake 'Em Up (Ice Cube reference): 2A Rankings
In 2A we had a shake the ranking order as the Magdalena Steers have done early work (listed above). Also, another team to take a 'Long' look at is the Longhorns of Logan. A big upset win over then ranked #1 in 2A, Melrose over the weekend.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

JENNA BUTCHER
Artesia, 2016, MB
Butcher helped lead the Bulldogs to a week two win over Rio Rancho and even in the loss to Silver, Butcher held her own with 16-blocks in the loss. In the win over Rio Rancho, Butcher had 9 kills. She currently leads the state in kills with (30) all coming last week!

Others To Consider: Stat Line
Jessica Garcia (Chaparral): Leads the state with a .357 hitting percentage.
Justena Galindo (Artesia): 85 assists all come from week 2.
Jenika Padilla (West Las Vegas): 7 Kills in win over Mora.
Addison Lewis (Hobbs): 9 digs vs Centennial.
Lauren Sifuentes (Gadsden): 8 kills in win over Hobbs.
Kexi Cole (Clovis): 10 kills, 2 blocks in win over Palo Duro (TX).
Mattie McCombs (Artesa): 24 kills all coming from last week.
Kayla Ledezma (Artesia): 63 digs all during week 2.
Week 2 Top Performances: Please list those we are missing.

WEEK 3 RANKINGS AND WHAT'S TO COME

Biggest drop: Rio Rancho went from 11 to 20 in the top-25.
Biggest leap: Clovis from unranked to 19.
Unknown to Known: Roswell (22) and Santa Teresa (24) both unranked now ranked.
Bye-Bye: Aztec and Ruidoso both fall out of the rankings after rough starts.
New #1 in 3A: Silver makes the leap to No. 1 with a 2-0 start.
0-0, 0-0: Hopefully this changes this coming week.
Dr. Jekyll or Hyde: Las Cruces. Statement win in week one, 0-2 in week two.
More: Week Three Rankings Released.

Will any team go undefeated in 2015? I give my opinion

Come one, come all. Who do you think will go undefeated in either the regular season or stay perfect through December.

How likely is it that a team will go perfect? I don't know if it happens often but for the sake of a Wednesday and an hour to burn I'll give my non-expert opinion.

Teams Considered: Some 6A-4A teams. Well, because I only had an hour and I ran out of time.

5. CENTENNIAL HAWKS (Last Season: 11-2, 4-1)
Class 5A | NMPreps.com Pre-Season Ranking (#5 All Classes) (#1 5A)

Biggest Challenge: Las Cruces High School (Week 4). This for one will be the reason folks so that no way in ... that they will go undefeated. However, who says they can't make the upset again after an "easy" game the week before against Socorro (TX) who went 2-8 last season.

Two Other Difficult Challenges: Onate came in ranked 12th and Belen 20th. Remember Belen was the only team that defeated Centennial in 2014.

Last Word: Regular Season Chance but yes unlikely with LCHS in the way. Plus, Artesia could repeat as champs.

[Cool Photo Here of the Hawks - Don't have one lol]

4. MIYAMURA PATRIOTS (Last Season: 10-2, 3-1)
Class 5A | NMPreps.com Pre-Season Ranking (#26)

Biggest Challenge: Well, I am awaiting a full schedule (C'mon coach or schedule person). I'll say Albuquerque High (Oct. 2). I favor Aztec to win again in this district but I am a fan of AHS coach. Can I have a shirt? (haha)

Two Other: Aztec (Nov. 6). Okay you knew that, I said it above. The other well of the four game listed. Uh.... Gallup or Tohatchi? I'll take the rival. Since I had too.

Last Word: They could go undefeated into the playoffs but just too much talent at the top of the 5A tier.

3. ST. PIUS X SARTANS (Last Season: 8-4, 3-0)
Class 5A | NMPreps.com Pre-Season Ranking (#21)

Biggest Challenge: Lovington High School (October 16th). Only seven games left and I'm far too lazy to do some investigating. So of the 7 Lovington might be the biggest challenge coming in ranked 36th.

Two Other Difficult Challenges: Maybe..... Moriarty. Yeah and I'll be a homer and say Grants.

Last Word: Regular season opportunity without seeing the other three games. State Champs? Ehh like before I like Artesia.

[Cool Graph of the teams who go undefeated and how likely here. Don't know this information haha]

2. HATCH VALLEY BEARS (Last Season: 9-4, 2-2)
Class 4A | NMPreps.com Ranking (#40)

Biggest Challenge: Cobre (Oct. 23). Not the defending champ Ruidoso Warriors? No, not on this line at least. Cobre and Hatch Valley could be the Title game for 4A. Yup another prediction that means nothings

Two Others: Ruidoso (Sept. 4th) and Silver (Oct. 16th). Well, why not we all know these teams are solid.

Last Word: Well, I could see them playing for the title. That means I think they could go undefeated. Why not?

1. LAS CRUCES BULLDAWGS (Last Season: 6-6, 2-2)
Class 6A | NMPreps.com Pre-Season Ranking (Coming Soon #1-#4)

Biggest Challenge: Rio Rancho (Sept. 18th). Yes, go ahead and say Mayfield or those other Texas teams that I know nothing about. They are the defending champs (guess that's sort of like saying because I said so).

Two Other Difficult: Mayfield (Nov. 6th) and Artesia (Oct. 2). See I didn't leave them off. Artesia, well because why not. (yes another cop-out answer.

Last Word: Honestly, in my terribly-non/expert-bored poster opinion I could see them end December without a loss. Oops yup I pick them to go, dare I say, UNDEFEATED. What does that mean? Nothing (haha). Plus I had to pick a 6A team, right for the sake of someone to tell me I'm wrong.

So... well, my fellow posters: Any chance of an undefeated team? I think some could be perfect (Read above haha) heading into the playoffs, is that bold well probably not but maybe. Just trying to have some fun on this board and on the hunt to get "LIKES". Gunning for 1,000 haha.

Cibola 37, Albuquerque 7
The Cibola Cougars led just 13-7 at the half, then busted the game open with three more touchdown runs in the second half from junior running back Kayzon Martin who totaled 5 touchdowns on the day. “I had to step up this year replacing Oscar Chatman. Our offensive line did a great job and the defense did a great job as well,” said Martin who ran for just over 150-yards. The Cougars take on Clovis in week 2, Albuquerque will take on Del Norte.

West Mesa 55, Highland 14
The Highland Hornets who entered the game riding a 14 game losing streak actually led this game 8-7 after the opening quarter, then West Mesa took over. The Mustangs scored 21 in the second quarter and added 4 more touchdowns in quarters 3 and 4 to route the Hornets. On the day Shirece Bell ran for 4 touchdowns and had over 161-yards. West Mesa now 1-0 will be on the road next weekend against Valencia, Highland will take on Rio Grande.

Hope 27, Academy 13
The two teams had not met since the 2012 season and it was a good one. Huskie Quarterback Caleb Myer Hagen threw three touchdowns on the day and Academy Athlete Clay Crosby returned a punt 81-yards for a score.

NMMI 41, Ft. Sumner 6
This game was a continuation of Friday Night and it was all NMMI. Quarterback Jack Guerro threw for over 200-yards and 2 touchdown passes, Christian Padilla caught two scores on the day and running back Chevy Xbille-avilla ran for 100-yards and 3 touchdowns.

Raton 42, McCurdy 6
Raton moved to 1-0 in the season defeated the McCurdy Bobcats 42-6. Raton will host Lajunta, Colorado in week 2.

Mescalero 54, Jemez Valley 34
Mescalero never trailed on Saturday and led 20-0 after a Christian Tsinjinnie Touchdown Run. New Coach Lenoard Velasquez kept the foot on the gas as Mescalero led 34-12 at the half. Trevor Armijo returned a kick 74-yards for a touchdown which was one of the game’s top highlights.

1. Cleveland Storm defeated Manzano 53-0
The Cleveland Storm and the Manzano Monarchs took a knee on the 25-yard line to open the game as Coach Heath Ridenour gave flowers to the mother of Jayden Silver-Chavez, the mother of the slain teen who was murdered in July. After the powerful moment, the Cleveland Storm displayed one of the most dominate performances we’ve seen in recent memory scoring on the second play of the game when Quarterback Gabe Ortega scored on a 65-yard touchdown run.
