Despite Key Losses To Graduation, Eagles should still compete in 2015

Eldorado Eagle Overview
An always formidable opponent from Albuquerque is Eldorado who has reached the playoffs 7 out of the last 9 seasons. 2014 was a special team, finishing the regular season 9-1 led by Michigan Blue Chip Recruit Quarterback Zach Gentry. While the Eagles graduate their quarterback, 4 out of their 5 linemen, and a handful of defensive players the Eagles once again should remain a top tier high school football team, just with some lesser known names returning for 2015. “I think when you have a program with tradition, kids want to win. These seniors want to win, just like last year’s seniors, and hopefully they continue their bond this year,” said Head Eldorado Football Coach Charlie Dotson entering his 8th year at the helm.

Their Strength: Speed & Athletes

“David Inman (6-foot-2, 185) and Noah Sweitzer (6-1, 210) are two-year starters that have made plays at receiver and at running back for us (Sweitzer holds offers from Western Colorado, Adams State, and Highlands). Jayce Jackson (5-foot-9, 155) will take over at quarterback, he’s actually a 4-year starter playing some running back as a freshman, so we have a lot of confidence in him,” Said Dotson on three of his key offensive returners. Dominic Sandoval (5-foot-9, 140) and Isaiah Martinez (6-foot-0, 185) will also play key roles are two players that can fly in the open field. “Isaiah is an unknown commodity speed wise, he was down al last year with an injury, but during his sophomore season he led the team in tackles from the safety position. He'll play receiver/running back/maybe even some quarterback this coming year,” Said Dotson. Martinez currently holds offers from Western Colorado and Adams State, and recently at a New Mexico Highlands Camp he ran a 4.1 pro-agility time. “Dominic Sandoval proved himself last year during big games in the playoffs, he’s only 140 pounds, but he is a tough kid that will run the football a little bit and catch the ball as well,”Commented Dotson.

Offensive Linemen To Watch

Lucas Weingard is their only returning offensive linemen at 5-foot-10 and 185 pounds (guard). “We have some kids that are 225 pounds or bigger, but up front is really about getting the pads on and seeing what we have,” said Dotson about the line. Charles Sooley at 210 pounds could see time both ways, Jaxon Webb is a 240 pound linemen, and Adam Clark will be tackle at 6-foot-2, 225 pounds. Dave McClure looked good during practice at 5-foot-10, 220 pounds. “Same old thing for us up front, we graduate nearly all our offensive linemen but one. Overall our line will have a lot of pride and want to do well, we just got to keep Jayce Jackson (quarterback) healthy,” Said Dotson.

Defensive Players To Watch

“Isaiah Martinez (6-foot-0, 185) will be our staple in the secondary and we are eager to have him back this year. Noah Sweitzer returns at linebacker, those two will be our leaders up front,” Commented Dotson when asked about defensive starters. Also in the secondary watch for Urreal Watson and Dominic Sandoval. Seth Johannes (5-foot-10, 180) returns at backer and also watch for 238 pound Alias Baker who is a monster and will also run the football in short yardage situations. 6-foot-1, 205 pound Sophomore Keegan McKeown could be a rising prospect to watch, David Inman will go two ways playing outside backer, and big bodies like Jaxon Webb at 240 pounds, Dave McClure at 220 pounds, and Adam Clark at 220 pounds should all see time up from on defense.

Breaking Down The Eldorado Eagles
Hard not to like Eldorado going into the 2015 season. Please don’t make it out to where I think every team looks good in the preseason, its not the case. Eldorado is a team that has won an average of 7 games over the last 5-years and while they do lose Zach Gentry, they do return let’s say 9 starters form last year’s team. Their athletes are some of the best I’ve seen right behind Cleveland’s athlete/skill position unit. Their linemen are not massive, but when is the last time you just rolled right over Eldorado? They are going to run the football more this year (65%) I would venture to say and they have the athletes to create a lot of big plays. Circle their back to back to back stretch with Volcano, Mayfield, and Cleveland, if they stay healthy, Eldorado should once again compete for the District 2-6A crown.

Every year I watch every pick. Why, I don't know but has been a thing I like to watch entirely.

What is taking place over the months of June and July?

The Four Point Play is designed to have you disagree with me. Don’t be afraid to debate why you think I am wrong.


1. Hobbs is NOT number one (boy's hoops): Yup, call me out. We haven’t seen a team repeat as champs and 18 has to wait. Losing the big kid, Jones is hard to replace in New Mexico. He wasn’t overly dominant but he did make offenses alter what they do in the paint or near the rim. The X-factor was the PG in the title run and he is playing up north at Highlands. Replacing them is too difficult. Someone else wins in 2016.


2. Cibola is number one BUT lose title (girls): I said it two years in a row, Clovis will win no matter what but they didn't. Oh yeah and I said they would lose when they won during Danni’s sophomore year. So the favorite typically loses in March for 6A girls hoops. The true stories or Cinderella stories have happened plenty during girls state tournament runs. Lovington stories, Volcano Vista rise to prominence, and Los Lunas swag. So 2016 we will see a 3 or 4 seed win it all.


3. Alamogordo the dusty, dry, paradise (boys)?: Job opened yesterday as reported by the local newspaper. I’ve been to Alamo twice in my life and remember the heat and dust blowing. However…….. this job is the diamond in the rough. Someone will be able to win soon. Does a lower class coach get the call up? Does a veteran get it? Oh yeah has anyone mentioned Gilmore yet (sarcasm).


And-One

4. The draft is tonight and as I’ve mentioned I love the draft. I thnk this will be one of the deeper drafts and will produce some future all-starts. I like Mudiay, Kentucky bigs, Russell and the rest could help revive some franchises.

Entering his first year as Head Coach at New Mexico Highland, Jeff Mills and staff have been buys running satellite high school football camps. Today, the Cowboys held two camps in Albuquerque, the first session at Cibola High School, the second at La Cueva in the evening. I was able to attend the La Cueva event and here is a quick hit top prospect list below.

Avery See - Del Norte - Fullback/Linebacker - Class of 2017
6-foot-0, 238 pound fullback/running back/defensive linemen/linebacker at Del Norte High School who is flat out a next level guy. Runs a 4.7/4.8, had a broad jump of 8-foot-1 and just runs very well. As a sophomore last year he ran for over 800-yards. Visited San Diego State last weekend.


Nick Mourning - Volcano Vista - Offensive Linemen - Class of 2016
During our campus stop to Volcano Vista last week, we missed Mourning who was attending a few football camps. He stands out among the crowd and moves well. Has a max bench of 365 pounds and is a 1,500 pound member of the Hawk's 1K club.


Isaiah Martinez - Eldorado - Athlete - Class of 2016
Introducing Isaiah Martinez... What an athlete coming out of Eldorado. Class of 2016 Athlete, that ran a 4.1 shuttle time and has good size at 6-foot-0, 185 pounds. Holds offers from Adams State and Western Colorado.


Noah Sweitzer - Eldorado - Running Back - Class of 2016
One of Eldorado's top returning football players and was just impressive to watch at camp today. Moves well, ran a 4.3 shuttle time, also ran a good 40-time.


Gabe Desoto - Del Norte - Offensive Linemen - Class of 2016
6-foot-2, 260 pound Gabe Desoto has to be considered as one of the top linemen in Class 5A this coming year. Has a great motor, moves well, another guy who impressed from Del Norte.


Lucas Silver - La Cueva - Athlete - Class of 2016
5-foot-11, 160 pound athlete that looks and plays the part of a top athlete from La Cueva. Ran well, impressed us overall.


Santos Taylor - Cleveland - Offensive Linemen
6-foot-3, 285 pound Santos Taylor shined during the morning session at Cibola High School and we're told that Highlands is recruiting him heavily after this morning.

Sandia Matadors Overview
The Sandia Matadors have remained one of Albuquerque’s top high school football programs over the years under Head Football Coach Kevin Barker who is entering his 23rd year as a Head Football Coach (Sandia/Manzano). In the past 10-seasons, the Matadors have reached the playoffs 8 out of 10 times, reaching the finals in 2012. “Our seniors are pretty darn good and have led all the way through our spring and summer workouts. We’re led by Seniors Jimmy Gallegos, Dominic Baca, Jeremiah Loya, and Isaiah Lowery. We return 11 starters overall and we’re excited about the 2015 season,” said Head Sandia Football Coach Kevin Barker.

Senior Spotlight: Jimmy Gallegos, Running Back

Jimmy Gallegos is their 2015 featured back, he ran for over 800-yards as a junior
Jimmy Gallegos is a 5-foot-10, 185 pound Running Back who’s name we’ve been calling for the last 4-years. As a sophomore he was unbelievable at making big plays and entering his senior year, he’s their game-breaker, and their first featured back at Sandia High School since the era of NMPreps.com (2006) “Jimmy actually scored a touchdown as a freshman on varsity in 2012 during the state title game against Las Cruces. He is a Matador through and through and one of the top 5 players I’ve ever coached, especially because he is a 48 minute type player. At running back he has great vision, power, has the get-away speed, and then at safety he can make the big hit and has a chance to play college football. I am really excited for his senior season,” commented Barker on Gallegos.

Skill Position Players

Taking over at Quarterback for Sandia is Class of 2017 Prospect Jacob Archibeque
At the wide out position watch for Ian Green who started at corner last year, Dominic Baca will be a two-year guy, and Jacob Archibeque will take over at quarterback (Started as a sophomore against Clovis in the 2014 playoffs). “He has a quick release, throws well, and we’ll be a much improved throwing team. We’re run first this year, but Archibeque is one we are excited about. Also watch for 6-foot-5, 210 pound Juan Beltran at receiver who looked the part in practice. Big receiver on the outside and we also saw 6-foot-4, 200 pound Carter Phillips getting reps at quarterback, but hear he’s moved to outside backer for the 2015 season.

Offensive Linemen Unit

Sandia’s offensive linemen are probably the best unit we’ve seen in the early summer season besides Cleveland. They are big, strong, move well, and speaking with Barker, the line will play a pivotal role in their season success, “They are a special group, they work well as a unit. At center we have Jeremiah Loya (5-foot-11, 265 pounds), at guards we have Cortez Largo (6-foot-0, 220) and Matthew Holly (5-foot-10, 220), two of the better in the city I would hope. At tackle we have 6-foot-5, 285 pound Isaiah Lowery (pictured) and at our other tackle position we have three guys battling it out for the starting role.”

Defensive Players To Watch In 2015

6-foot-1, 210 pound Mark Flores is their main man at middle backer
Returning 7 defensive starters from last, likely makes Sandia the district front runner heading into the 2015 season. Up front Sandia returns three out of their four starting defensive linemen. Jason Moreno looked explosive at practice at 5-foot-10, 270 pounds, Ben Bertram is a 6-foot-2, 215 pound prospect that has a great motor, Andrew Blea at 6-foot-1, 220 pounds will be at the defensive end position, and at backer watch for Mark Flores (pictured). Flores is a 6-foot-1, 210 pound linebacker that is certainly one of the better backers we’ve seen this summer. One backer that is likely to emerge on defense is 6-foot-4, 200 pound Carter Phillips. In the secondary: Ian Greene, Dominic Baca, and Jimmy Gallegos all started and we’re all notable defensive backs during our post season awards.

Breaking Down The Sandia Matadors
They are not flashy, it’s a blue collar community with tough kids. Sandia always brings it, ask around. We really liked what we saw at Sandia this morning, especially up front. Their linemen are very physical and should create a ton of opportunities for standout Jimmy Gallegos to get touches and make plays. Then on defense, they return 7 starters, and their secondary is loaded with playmakers. They have a strong schedule and kick off the 2015 season against Volcano Vista on August 26th (Wednesday Night) at 7PM. Besides a very important opener, circle the date of September 24th against Cleveland. It’s early, but consider Sandia one of the top Albuquerque teams in 2015.

Volcano Vista Hawks Overview
Last year Volcano Vista missed the 2014 New Mexico High School Football Playoffs going 3-7 on the year after an impressive opening season 18-14 victory over Sandia. Volcano Vista then lost their first 4 out of 5 games, and finally finished 1-3 in district with their only victory coming against Santa Fe. Last year was last year and this year is this year, so with that said, Volcano Vista has been waiting for this group to be seniors for a while now. These current seniors are the young guns that have been brought up in the program, a few players have seen more than two years on varsity. Head Coach Chad Wallin enters his 9th season as Head Coach making the playoffs three times since the 2008 season. Volcano Vista is big up-front, has some very good skill position players, and it would be an absolute shocker if this team misses the playoffs in 2015. “It's been a good summer to start, the attitude is a lot better and the kids are just working hard. It’s a very senior dominate group and that is where the leadership starts for us," said Head Volcano Vista Coach Chad Wallin.

Three Year Starter Josh Williams

6-foot-1, 200 pound Josh Williams will be a three-year starter entering the 2015 season. As a junior he threw for 1,017-yards and 11 touchdowns, his sophomore season in 2013, he threw for 1,338-yards and 16 touchdowns. He is polished as a quarterback, has good escapability when flushed from the pocket, and is clutch. Williams has come up with some big plays in some big games. Having some talented receivers this year, Williams is likely do for his biggest year passing yards wise and honestly could leave as the Hawks all-time top quarterback in the school’s short lived history.

Offensive Players To Watch In 2015

The Hawks are going to be big up front. Headliners for the unit include 5-foot-11, 240 pound Frank Garcia (pictured) and 220 pound Jordan Waquie. Garcia looked great at practice this morning and should be one of the better offensive linemen in the district. 6-foot-0, 230 pound Nick Mourning is likely their best two-way linemen with some outstanding numbers in the weight room. He has a bench press of 365 and has a squat of 500 pounds. Watch for Mourning to be a top 10 two-way linemen in New Mexico this year. Luis Ortiz at 5-foot-11, 240 pounds and 6-foot-3, 330 pound Brandon Reeder are additional names to watch in the trenches. Quarterback as mentioned is Josh Williams a three year starter, the running back position is right now up for grabs between Senior to be Matt Otero and junior to be Chris Streetz. The Hawks featured back for the last three years has been Dominic Chavez who recently graduated. At recevier, the Hawks have some impressive targets. Watch for Class of 2017 Recevier David Cormier at 6-foot-4 and 180 pounds, Cormier shined at Lobo Camp and is getting some interest from the Lobos after the event. Their leading recevier from last year is tight end Josh Barton at 6-foot-3, 200 pounds. Barton caught for over 400-yards as a junior in 2014. Keep an eye on Helio Lopez at the slot position and expect Julian Gallegos to be another sure handed target.

Defensive Players To Watch In 2015

The Hawks return some quality defensive backs and their secondary will be anchored by Christian Sanchez who looks and plays the part. At 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds, Sanchez is a rare defensive back that has size and speed. He stood out at practice. Also watch for Alan Rodriguez and Marcus Pyle, all three defensive backs are in the 1,000 pound club. Rio Hatten is another name from the secondary to keep tabs on, again another prospect in the 1K club. Volcano Vista has clearly been in the weight room. The Hawks have two very good linebackers returning: Brian Parks at 5-foot-11, 212 pounds and Joel Castellano (pictured) at 6-foot-0, 180 pounds. Each backer not only returns experience, but each has clearly improved drastically. Last year as a junior Castellano led the team in tackles with more than 60 wrap ups. Also keep on eye on Class of 2017 linebacker Issac Martinez. Up front in the trenches on defense watch for Nick Mourning, the Hawks’ strongest overall player, Derek Goke who looked great at practice as well, watch for Ethan Valencia (another two-way linemen), and Jordan Waquie, again all these prospects are in the 1,000 pound club.

Breaking It Down
As I mentioned above, I would be utterly shocked if this team does not win 6-7 games this year. This is the year the coaching staff has been waiting for and while Cleveland is the clear front runner in the district and Rio Rancho returns some good talent, consider Volcano Vista the spoiler in District 1-6A. These guys are going to be good on both sides of the football. The question mark I have right now is the running back position. Over the years Dominico Chavez a three year starter has been a big bruising back that has been tough to bring down, this year the Hawks are yet to determine their featured back. On concerning factor is they play a good schedule full of yearly 6A contenders: 8 of their 10 games are against 2014 playoff teams. I would venture to say, this is the best Volcano Vista team since 2012, maybe even better.

What are the thoughts on the event as a whole? or individual teams?

I take the field to win over the USA. Looks like Germany is just too dominant.

The US women havent impressed. Their physicality and endurance is too much for most teams, but I dont know if that would matter with a team like Germany who can keep the ball and run the USA into the ground.

So many years ago in Artesia a new kid on the block named Speedy Faith was my new Assistant Coach in baseball. We had gone to the Roswell Tourney and were playing first game of the day. Blue behind the plate was Mr Miller. Now anybody from the Southeast will know Mr Miller and really appreciate this story. So we re playing an Odessa team and they take 45 minutes for Infield/Outfield. Before the game I told Speedy that we never argue or raise our voices to Umps and we treat them with respect. I told him to forget his College days and not embarrass himself. So Mr Miller walks over to me and tells me that We have 5 minutes for Infield/Outfield. I hand Speedy the fungo and tell him to hit Infield/Outfield. I then proceed to argue and sometimes very loudly with Mr Miller on how this was wrong. I got him to turn his back to the Field and kept in his face and making him defend himself. Finally I could tell Speedy was about through with warmup and said Thank you and walked away. Speedy got to the dugout and said "Uh what about the speech of not arguing with Umps"
