5A Volleyball: Top Performers Ready to Shine in the New Mexico Volleyball State Tournament

As the 2024 New Mexico high school volleyball state tournament arrives, the excitement surrounding some of the state’s most outstanding players reaches a fever pitch. In the spotlight are the undefeated Las Cruces Bulldawgs, aiming to defend their title with a powerful roster, but strong competition from the Cleveland Storm, La Cueva Bears, and Los Lunas Tigers ensures this won’t be an easy feat.

The Las Cruces Bulldawgs: Defending the Crown. The Bulldawgs enter as the tournament’s number-one seed with a flawless 23-0 record, fueled by a roster brimming with talent. Leading the charge is Addison Massey (Class of 2026), an outside hitter whose 430 kills and 192 digs reflect her remarkable versatility. Massey’s powerful strikes and sharp instincts make her one of the most feared offensive players in the tournament, and with her at the helm, Las Cruces holds a clear advantage.

Joining Massey is Ava Price (2027), the rising sophomore who has made her mark with 116 kills and 146 digs this season. Price is quick and instinctive, bringing skillful play to both offense and defense, and her young career suggests a promising future for the Bulldawgs. Then there’s Mercedes Willis (2025), a steady force on both sides of the net, with 110 kills and 27 blocks.

Hailey Rautenstrauch (2025) is another key attacker for Las Cruces, tallying 109 kills as she contributes depth to the team’s offense. With Emma Rose Barrera (2025) and Sydney Pipkin (2026) rounding out the backcourt, Las Cruces fields a formidable defense. Barrera’s 49 aces and 184 digs showcase her service prowess and defensive stability, while Pipkin, with an impressive 725 assists and 48 aces, expertly orchestrates the offense. Pipkin’s playmaking skills and relentless drive keep the Bulldawgs’ offensive tempo high, while Lenea Carr (2025) fortifies the defense, recording 41 total blocks to make it difficult for opposing hitters to find open spaces.

The Cleveland Storm: The Balanced Contender. Only two losses blemish Cleveland Storm’s impressive 21-2 record, and with a roster filled with seasoned players, they pose a serious threat to Las Cruces. At the core of Cleveland’s strength is Kelsey Heffner (Senior), a middle blocker whose .417 hitting percentage and 73 blocks place her among the state’s top front-line defenders.

The Storm’s offense revolves around Ceci Vance (Senior), an outside hitter with 274 kills and 74 aces. Vance has a sharp, aggressive style and can strike effectively from multiple angles. Her skill from the service line, combined with her hitting, provides a dual threat that has kept Cleveland competitive all season long. Molly Maurer (Sophomore) rounds out Cleveland’s lineup as one of the state’s premier setters. With a league-leading 853 assists, Maurer has the vision and precision to run the offense seamlessly, making her a critical component of the Storm’s quest for a championship.

La Cueva Bears: District Dominance with a Dangerous Attack. The La Cueva Bears, District 2-5A champions, have an outstanding 20-3 record and enter the tournament riding high after a perfect district season. Leading La Cueva’s offensive assault is Karyna Werley (Senior), who boasts an impressive .379 hitting percentage and has amassed 316 kills.

Alongside Werley is Jula Utash (Sophomore), who has racked up 232 kills this season, providing La Cueva with a versatile scoring option. Utash’s agility and precision make her a perfect complement to Werley, giving the Bears a potent one-two punch that will be challenging for any team to counter. Together, these two players form the foundation of La Cueva’s offense and make them a force to be reckoned with as they aim to make a deep run in the tournament.

Los Lunas Tigers: Unwavering Defense and a Fighting SpiritAt 15-6, the Los Lunas Tigers may appear to be underdogs, but their strong showing as District 5-5A champions speaks volumes about their resilience and skill. Mia Mendoza (Senior) is the linchpin of the Tigers’ offense, with 609 assists to her name.

In the backcourt, Lauren Shiplet (Senior) leads the Tigers’ defense with 406 digs, showcasing her quick reactions and strong defensive instincts. Shiplet’s focus and positioning make her a wall at the back of the court, frustrating opponents’ attempts to score and providing stability in high-stakes situations. The Tigers also have power at the net in Lynae Hands (Junior), who has notched 42 blocks and has a hitting percentage of .247.

Kaelynn Ashley of Albuquerque High leads with 304 kills, showcasing her versatility as both a middle and outside hitter, while Aleena Hubbard from Santa Fe High has amassed 294 kills, providing her team with a powerful offensive edge. From Rio Rancho, Alyssa Dominguez brings 52 aces to the tournament, making her a serving threat and a versatile asset as both an outside hitter and defensive specialist. Ayva Ashley of Albuquerque High follows closely with 50 aces, contributing her skills as both a setter and right-side hitter, strengthening her team’s strategic options. Centennial High’s Maren Bekken enters with 259 kills, proving herself a key offensive weapon on both the outside and right side, while Kendall Fenstermacher of Sandia High (Albuquerque) adds her 249 kills as a setter and outside hitter, giving her team depth in playmaking and scoring. Rounding out the list, Skylar Schwartz from Volcano Vista High (Albuquerque) has tallied 246 kills, bringing athleticism and precision that will make her a tough competitor at the net.

Ranking This Week's Must-Watch Games in New Mexico High School Football

GRINE'S TOP FIVE GAMES TO WATCH

6-Man Championship:

This weekend, the state championship game in 6-Man football features an intense matchup between #1 Logan (11-0) and #2 Grady (10-1) at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday night. The two teams met earlier this season, with Logan narrowly winning 32-26. Logan's offense leans heavily on the run, led by standout Haden Judd, while Grady has a more balanced attack led by quarterback Zander Ciancio. This rematch promises to be a battle to determine the best team in 6-Man.

6A Showdown:
In 6A, the game to watch is #4 Volcano Vista (8-2) versus #5 Las Cruces (8-3) on Friday night at 7 p.m. Most other games in this bracket are expected to go according to seed, with favorites heavily favored by at least two touchdowns to move on to the semifinals. There’s some speculation about #6 Rio Rancho (7-4) potentially competing with #2 Centennial (10-0), but that could be on name alone, Centennial remains a strong favorite to advance with ease.

5A Intrigue:
The 5A matchup between #3 Deming (8-2) and #6 Mayfield (5-6) is one to watch closely. Mayfield has been playing well recently, and this district rivalry has the potential to go down to the wire. In September, Deming edged Mayfield 29-27 on the road, proving that this rematch has all the makings of a classic.

2A Battles:
2A offers some of the week's most intriguing matchups. While the #2 Santa Rosa Lions (7-3) are favored to advance past the #7 Raton Tigers (6-5), there could be some first-half suspense. However, two other games carry strong upset potential. #6 Loving (7-4) takes on #3 Legacy Academy (9-1), and #5 Eunice (8-3) visits #4 Tularosa (6-4). Both games promise intensity and have a genuine "upset alert" vibe that should make for exciting football.

Boys & Girls Basketball Content Person

I’ll be rolling out content starting November 1st—possibly even sooner! I’ve received a few texts asking when things will get going again. Typically, we run content throughout the year, but it's been a tough Fall. However, we should be back to full speed soon.

In the past, I’ve had people in my basketball network help with NMPreps' official team rankings, regional game coverage, and now, for this season, I’m looking for anyone who might be interested in providing content—like attending a couple games per week and sharing a few video clips. Whether you’re a former coach wanting to stay connected, a high school or college student interested in sports journalism (I’ve had interns receive college credit in the past), there’s an opportunity here. It’ll come with a media pass to attend all games and the state tournament for free.

If you or someone you know might be interested, feel free to text me. I’ve had a solid group of five people—a mix of former coaches, a superintendent, and a few parents—on my "scout" network for the past ten years. But with people moving away and the unfortunate passing of two members, I’m looking for anyone interested in helping out in any area.

If that’s you, text me at 505-414-4313.

PREVIEWS

No. 5 New Mexico Military Colts (7-3) vs. No. 12 Hot Springs Tigers (4-6)

In the opening round of the 3A New Mexico high school football playoffs, District 3-3A rivals, the NMMI Colts and the Hot Springs Tigers, face off in a highly anticipated matchup. The Colts, entering as the No. 5 seed, are a strong playoff contender with potential for another semifinal appearance, echoing last season’s success as a 5-seed. In their regular season meeting, NMMI took a decisive 35-0 victory over Hot Springs, showcasing a powerful first half that set the tone.

NMMI opened the season strong, going 4-1, including four shutout wins, with their only loss being a close one to Eunice, decided in the final quarter. After a loss to the No. 2-ranked Dexter, the Colts bounced back with three straight victories before a narrow 42-35 defeat against Socorro in the regular season finale. Key to their success is the dynamic play of junior quarterback Cole Seidenberger, a dual-threat talent and 3A All-New Mexico candidate, who has racked up 18 touchdowns this season. Running back Cohen Tomasits adds further firepower with 773 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns. Defensively, the Colts are anchored by seniors Sawyer Hull and Nathan Martinez, alongside standout sophomore Tristian Carranza, who leads the team with 49 total tackles and four sacks. Young talents Grant Maloney and Marcus Kannady also bolster the defense.

Hot Springs, led by first-year head coach Maximus Buckingham, has found new momentum, returning to the playoffs for the first time since 2019 (back when head coach Buckingham was still playing for the UTEP Miners). They started the season with an emotional last-second win over Tularosa (20-18) and compiled a 3-1 record early. District play, however, presented significant challenges, and the Tigers struggled with a 1-5 finish, carrying a three-game losing streak into the postseason. Despite recent setbacks, this year’s playoff appearance has already exceeded preseason expectations, marking a successful step forward in Hot Springs’ rebuilding efforts.

Prediction:
  • NMMI 30, Hot Springs 12
  • Favorite: NMMI, -15.5
  • Over/Under: 44 points
  • Grine's Pick: NMMI
No. 8 Hope Christian Huskies (4-6) vs. No. 9 Thoreau Hawks (8-2)

In another first-round 3A playoff showdown on Friday night, the Hope Christian Huskies, the No. 8 seed, host the No. 9 seed Thoreau Hawks at Milne Stadium. This matchup pits District 2-3A’s Hope Christian against the District 1-3A champions, Thoreau. These teams have a bit of playoff history, having met in the 2021 playoffs where Thoreau edged out a 19-13 victory before advancing to face St. Michael's in the quarterfinals—a prize the winner of this game will also earn.

Hope Christian had a challenging start to the season, opening with a 1-3 record after an initial win over Del Norte. They stumbled with three straight losses to Legacy Academy (2A), Albuquerque Academy (4A), and Manzano (4A) but rebounded with wins over Estancia and Santa Fe Indian. Their strongest win of the season came in district play, where they handled Pojoaque Valley 35-6. Leading the Huskies’ offense is junior quarterback Roman Montoya, a dual-threat talent with 1,590 passing yards, 20 passing touchdowns, 209 rushing yards, and 6 rushing touchdowns. A key weapon for Montoya is standout senior receiver Breylon Williams, who has quietly had one of the best seasons in 3A, amassing 1,316 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns. On defense, Krew Ward (2026) leads with a team-high 92 total tackles, while senior Chaney Cecil adds experience. Freshman standout Kashton Ewen has made an impact with 9 sacks and 46 total tackles, showing promise as a young defensive force.

Thoreau enters the playoffs on a hot streak, riding a 7-game win streak as one of the top teams from the northwest region of 3A football. With 24 wins over the past three years, they’ve maintained a consistent presence as a program to watch, capped by an 8-2 season this year. The Hawks’ offense is powered by the senior 1-2 punch of quarterback Stetson Perry and running back Elam Smith. Perry has thrown for 1,193 passing yards and 19 passing touchdowns, while Smith has racked up 1,033 rushing yards and 20 rushing touchdowns. On defense, Sage Westmoreland (2026) anchors the Hawks with 85 total tackles, making him a player to watch in this game.

Prediction:
  • Hope Christian 28, Thoreau 27
  • Favorite: Hope Christian, -2.5
  • Over/Under: 46 points
  • Grine's Pick: Hope

PREVIEW

No. 5 Las Cruces Bulldawgs (7-3) vs. No. 12 West Mesa Mustangs (5-5)

Date & Time: Friday, 7 p.m.
Location: Field of Dreams (Las Cruces, NM)

Overview:
The Class 6A first-round matchup pits the District 3-6A runner-up Las Cruces Bulldawgs against the visiting No. 12 seed West Mesa Mustangs from District 2-6A. Las Cruces enters the playoffs as the fifth seed and is aiming for another deep postseason run after a semifinal appearance last year. Meanwhile, West Mesa returns to the playoffs for the second year in a row, looking to pull off an upset after a challenging regular season.

Las Cruces Bulldawgs:
The Bulldawgs are poised for a strong playoff push, hoping to make it back to the semifinals and potentially face off against top-seeded La Cueva. Their three losses came against some of the state’s best: Cleveland (3-seed), Centennial (2-seed), and Volcano Vista (4-seed), a team they narrowly lost to early in the season, 27-24, and who awaits the winner of this game in the quarterfinals. Las Cruces boasts a talented roster with several standout players, especially sophomore running back Daniel Amaro, who’s been a consistent offensive force. Amaro’s season highlights include 221 rushing yards (2 TDs) against Rio Rancho, 106 yards (3 TDs) versus Cleveland, and 238 yards (2 TDs) against Hobbs, positioning him as a contender for NMPreps & Rivals New Mexico Running Back of the Year.

Junior quarterback Gunnar Guardiola has been a reliable leader, throwing for 1,666 yards and 16 touchdowns. His favorite target, senior Nate Libby, has contributed 705 receiving yards this season, forming a strong passing connection. Additionally, sophomore Diego Lopez and junior Francisco Winnikoff have provided depth at the receiver position, giving Guardiola plenty of options in the passing game.

West Mesa Mustangs:
West Mesa, seeded 12th, returns to the playoffs aiming for a better outcome after last year’s first-round loss to Rio Rancho, in this 12-5 matchup. The Mustangs started the season with promise, winning their first two games before a tough three-game losing streak against ranked opponents Volcano Vista, Los Lunas, and La Cueva. Although West Mesa lacks a signature 6A win, they secured victories over Santa Fe, Albuquerque, and Atrisco Heritage, which helped them clinch a playoff berth. However, the Mustangs struggled against top 6A teams, being outscored 206-55 in those matchups.

Key players for the Mustangs include senior running backs Jamari Phillips-Woods (854 rushing yards, 7 TDs) and Ronnie Gilletti (365 rushing yards, 6 TDs), along with junior Logan Jacobson-Waldrep (522 rushing yards, 6 TDs). Defensively, the Mustangs rely on their senior-heavy lineup, led by Eric McAfee (104 tackles, 4 sacks), Yorik Molinar (80 tackles), and Tristan Caraveo (66 tackles). This experienced defense will need to step up if West Mesa hopes to challenge the Bulldawgs on their home field.

No. 6 Los Lunas Tigers (7-2) vs. No. 11 Piedra Vista Panthers (3-7)

Date & Time: Friday, 6 p.m.
Location: Los Lunas High School Stadium

Overview:
The first round of the Class 6A playoffs kicks off with the No. 6 Los Lunas Tigers hosting the No. 11 Piedra Vista Panthers. Los Lunas comes into the postseason after a strong 7-2 regular season, securing the District 5-6A runner-up spot with a potent offensive attack. Meanwhile, Piedra Vista punched their playoff ticket with a critical rivalry win against Farmington on the final night of the regular season, showcasing resilience in a must-win situation.

Los Lunas Tigers:
The Tigers have been one of the most consistent teams in 6A, finishing with a 7-2 record and going undefeated at home. Their balanced offense averages 384.1 total yards per game, powered by a potent rushing attack led by standout junior Kaiden Reese, who averages 78.8 rushing yards per game. Reese has been a dual-threat weapon, adding 103.6 passing yards per game, keeping opposing defenses off-balance. Wide receiver J'den Howard is Reese’s top target, averaging 54.8 receiving yards per game and giving the Tigers a reliable playmaker downfield.

Defensively, LosLunas has held opponents to just over 22 points per game, bolstered by strong performances from linebacker Gage Marquez (6.8 tackles per game; 61 total tackles) and defensive lineman Brad Mallory and Aidan Martinez each with 3 sacks on the season. The Tigers’ defense will look to disrupt Piedra Vista's offensive rhythm and keep their playoff momentum strong.

Piedra Vista Panthers:
Piedra Vista enters the playoffs with a 3-7 record, but their season has been marked by resilience, especially with their season-saving win over Farmington to close out the regular season. The Panthers average 288.4 total yards per game, primarily leaning on the ground game led by Brig Keiser, who has been a workhorse for the team with an impressive 148.8 rushing yards per game. Keiser’s production will be vital for the Panthers to control the pace and keep the Los Lunas offense off the field.

Quarterback Felipe Moreno adds another dimension, averaging 75.4 passing yards per game, with wide receiver Aj Cockrell (2027) serving as his primary target. On defense, Andrew Wood leads the team with 5.4 tackles per game, while Amilio Ibuado has been effective in pass-rushing situations. No. 7 Rio Rancho Rams (6-4) vs. No. 10 Sandia Matadors (5-5)

Date & Time: Friday, 7 p.m.
Location: Rio Rancho High School Stadium

Overview:
This matchup between the No. 7 Rio Rancho Rams and No. 10 Sandia Matadors could be one of the most competitive games of the first round. The Rams, once considered semifinal favorites, are now looking to stave off an upset against a Sandia team riding momentum, having won two of their last three games. Meanwhile, Rio Rancho has dropped two of their last three games, with losses coming to top-seeded teams Cleveland (No. 3) and Volcano Vista (No. 4). Their only other losses are to Centennial (No. 2) and Las Cruces (No. 5), demonstrating their strength of schedule and battle-tested readiness.

Rio Rancho Rams:
The Rams have shown versatility on offense this season, with 2026 athlete Micah Takahashi filling in at both quarterback and running back. Senior quarterback JJ Arellano has also proven reliable, showcasing solid playmaking skills throughout the season. Key receiver Jace Pitt (2025) has been Arellano’s go-to target, adding consistency to the Rams’ passing attack. On the defensive side, Jacob Lesperance anchors the unit, bringing leadership and physicality that will be essential against Sandia’s quick offense.

With four tough losses to some of the best teams in the state, Rio Rancho enters the playoffs battle-hardened and ready to make a statement. They’ll be looking to assert themselves early and leverage their home-field advantage to advance past this opening round.

Sandia Matadors:
The Matadors come into the game with a 5-5 record, fueled by recent wins in two of their last three games. They are led by sophomore quarterback Jahleel Lewis, an emerging talent who’s been dynamic under center this season. On defense, Jeremiah Bustillos has been a cornerstone for the Matadors, providing critical stops and rallying the defensive squad in key moments.

Sandia will need a strong performance from both Lewis and Bustillos to upset the Rams on the road. Their defense, in particular, must be prepared to contain Rio Rancho’s balanced attack and prevent explosive plays.

No. 8 Eldorado Eagles (7-3) vs. No. 9 Hobbs Eagles (6-4)

Date & Time: Friday, 7 p.m.
Location: Wilson Stadium, Albuquerque

Overview:
The 9-seed Hobbs Eagles travel a long way to Albuquerque to face the 8-seed Eldorado Eagles in what should be a close and hard-fought battle at Wilson Stadium. Both teams come in hot: Eldorado has won their last four games, surpassing early expectations, while Hobbs enters the playoffs on a three-game win streak that earned them a playoff spot. This matchup could easily go down to the wire, as both teams bring strong playmakers and defensive stoppers to the field.

Eldorado Eagles:
Junior quarterback Giovanni Evans leads Eldorado with 613 passing yards and three touchdowns, while the backfield is powered by seniors Daniel Quinones (379 yards, 1 TD) and sophomore Isaiah Quintana, who has six touchdowns on 299 rushing yards. Eldorado’s offense also relies on specialist Jahari Morehead, a dangerous returner and key receiver with 311 yards and two receiving touchdowns.

On defense, seniors Andres Atsye and Kevin Cuomo are tackling machines, with 99 and 97 total tackles respectively. Atsye also leads the team with four sacks, while Cuomo has added two sacks and contributes with physical play. Defensive back Kadin Dominguez (three interceptions) is another key figure, capable of turning the momentum with his playmaking abilities.

Hobbs Eagles:
Hobbs has been led by senior quarterback Brock Beaty, who has racked up 1,898 passing yards and 23 touchdowns. His top targets include juniors Justice French (552 yards, 7 TDs) and Braddock Beaty (457 yards, 7 TDs), both of whom average over 50 receiving yards per game. Sophomore Shamus Wright anchors the rushing attack with 618 yards and four touchdowns, complemented by senior Omarrion Kennedy, who has contributed 517 yards and ten touchdowns.

On defense, Hobbs is stacked with seniors who bring experience and toughness. Tristan Davis leads with a staggering 133 total tackles and six sacks, while Gustavo Diaz-Castro and Sammy Baeza follow with 121 and 101 tackles, respectively. Davis and Baeza also add significant disruption in the backfield, with Davis recording 19 tackles for loss and Baeza contributing 20 TFLs. Their presence will be crucial in containing Eldorado’s run game and creating pressure on Evans.

Key Matchups to Watch:
  • Hobbs Passing Attack vs. Eldorado Secondary: Brock Beaty’s connection with French and Braddock Beaty has been lethal this season, and Eldorado’s defense will need to lock down these explosive receivers to prevent big plays.
  • Eldorado’s Ground Game vs. Hobbs Front Seven: With Atsye and Cuomo on defense, Eldorado will aim to control the pace through its rushing attack. Hobbs' strong linebackers, led by Davis and Baeza, will look to disrupt Eldorado’s rhythm.
Prediction:
  • Score Prediction: Eldorado 31, Hobbs 28
  • Favorite: Eldorado, -2.5
  • Over/Under: 59.5 points
  • Grine’s Pick: Eldorado

Date & Time: Friday, 7 p.m.

Preview: The Class 5A first-round playoff game between district rivals Miyamura and Highland brings a rematch — a win means advancing to the quarterfinals, while a loss ends the season. These District 1-5A opponents faced off earlier this season, with Miyamura taking a narrow 36-31 victory. This time, both teams are riding strong finishes, and looking to add a playoff win to their season.

Miyamura Patriots:
Miyamura has shown substantial improvement under head coach David Foley, who has transformed the program from last year’s 3-7 record to a solid 6-4 season. The Patriots have won four of their final five games, consistently putting up 30 points per game. Junior quarterback Salid Sayeed Rashid has been a key factor, throwing for 1,730 yards and 18 touchdowns and adding 192 rushing yards and five scores.

Running back Sean Torres, a junior, complements Rashid in the backfield with 574 rushing yards and six touchdowns. Rashid has spread the ball among a strong senior receiving corps led by Javier Flores (573 yards, 4 TDs), Seth Torres (461 yards, 7 TDs), Aidan Macias (281 yards, 5 TDs), and Nikki Torres (280 yards, 3 TDs). On defense, juniors Benjamin Vidales, Josh Sanchez, and Carlos Garcia lead the way, totaling 87, 61, and 58 tackles, respectively, with Garcia leading the team with six sacks.

Highland Hornets:
Highland entered the season as a district favorite, and despite midseason struggles, the Hornets ended on a high note, winning their last three games and five of their last six. Their run-heavy offense is spearheaded by one of the state’s top running backs, Amiri Mumba (2025), who has racked up 1,643 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns in just nine games. Mumba’s performance will be central to Highland’s offensive game plan, as they aim to control the clock and wear down the Patriots’ defense.

The 2024 New Mexico high school football playoffs are kicking off, and with the first-round matchups set, we’re diving into the teams, players, and factors to watch as they vie for a spot in the next round. Below is a breakdown of each game scheduled for the weekend of November 8th and 9th, including predictions, key players, and Grine’s picks.

FIRST ROUND - NOVEMBER 8TH/9TH
#5 Portales vs #12 Chaparral, Friday, 7pm
#6 Espanola Valley vs #11 Manzano, Saturday, 1pm
#7 Grants vs #10 Silver, Saturday, 1pm
#8 Valencia vs #9 Moriarty, Saturday, 1pm

No. 5 Portales Rams (6-4) vs. No. 12 Chaparral Lobos (3-7)

Date:
Friday, 7:00 PM
Location: Greyhound Stadium (Eastern New Mexico University, Portales, NM)

Preview: The Portales Rams, ranked fifth, enter the playoffs with hopes of making another deep run after last year's loss in the state championship. The Rams had high expectations at the start of the season, but they faced a setback when standout quarterback Paxton Culpepper (class of 2025) went down early with an injury. Senior Tommy Lopez has stepped up to fill the gap, throwing for 691 yards and 9 touchdowns. Not only a passing threat, Lopez also leads the team on the ground, rushing for 675 yards and 10 touchdowns. Freshman Slade Segovia has emerged as another offensive weapon with 378 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns, hinting at a promising future for Portales. However, offensive consistency remains a question as the Rams aim for a deep playoff push.

On defense, Portales relies heavily on Lopez and Segovia, with both playing on both sides of the ball. Lopez leads with 75 total tackles, while Segovia has added 5 sacks and 56 total tackles. Another defensive force is junior Jaylon Newburn, who has racked up 69 tackles this season, and junior Rigoberto Holguin, another player to watch closely in this matchup. The Rams' defense, although young, plays with resilience and depth, making them a tough opponent for Chaparral.

Chaparral, seeded 12th, rarely makes playoff appearances, but this year, they’re entering with renewed confidence after key wins over district rivals Silver (20-14) and Albuquerque Academy (44-20). The Lobos have an exciting core of young talent, led by juniors Juan Urquiozo (class of 2026) and Israel Nieto (class of 2026), along with sophomore Raul Lopez (class of 2027). Quarterback Israel Nieto has been a dual-threat for Chaparral, amassing 1,362 passing yards and 11 touchdowns while adding 403 rushing yards and 6 touchdowns. His top target, sophomore Tyvin Howard, has racked up 598 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns, providing a consistent deep threat.

Defensively, Chaparral leans on senior leaders Manny Rodriguez and Reese Martinez. Rodriguez has accumulated a staggering 136 tackles and 7 sacks, while Martinez has added 114 tackles and 5 sacks. Both are standout defenders and give Chaparral’s defense a chance to keep the game competitive.

#8 Navajo Prep vs #9 McCurdy, Saturday, 3pm

Matchup Previews

No. 5 Eunice Cardinals (7-3) vs No. 12 Laguna-Acoma Hawks (4-5)

Preview: The Eunice Cardinals, a program known for dominance, come into this postseason from District 3-2A. With a 7-3 record, it’s unusual to see them outside the top three seeds, but they remain a formidable force. All-state quarterback Elijah Melancon (2026) leads the Cardinals, averaging over 250 passing yards per game, while running back Eljan Woods (2025) contributes over 100 rushing yards per game. For Laguna-Acoma, the Hawks made a late-season push to claim a spot in the playoffs, winning two of their last three games in District 1-2A. While they’ll look to carry that momentum, they face a major challenge in matching the depth and talent of Eunice.

Prediction: Eunice 50, Laguna-Acoma 0
Grine's Pick: Eunice
Favorite: Eunice, -50.5 (Over/Under 51.5)

No. 6 Loving Falcons (6-4) vs No. 11 Cuba Rams (4-6)

On defense, Kalon Lujan and Braven Vasquez anchor the team with a combined 147 tackles this season. The Cuba Rams had a rough start to their season, going 0-5, but rallied to win four of their final five games. Running back Santiago Maestas (2025) and QB Richard Lovato (2026) will need to be at their best for Cuba to have a chance.

Prediction: Loving 56, Cuba 6
Grine's Pick: Loving
Favorite: Loving, -49.5 (Over/Under 58)

No. 7 Raton Tigers (5-5) vs No. 10 Jal Panthers (2-8)

Preview: Raton, new to 2A this season after moving from 3A, saw a promising start but settled at 5-5 overall, representing District 2-2A as the third-place finisher. Their offensive spark comes from senior QB Cannon Walton, who has dual-threat capabilities with over 700 yards each in both passing and rushing, and 15+ touchdowns on the season. Jal enters as the fifth-place finisher from District 3-2A, traditionally known for postseason strength. However, the Panthers are undergoing a rebuilding season. Daniel Ornelas brings over 200 all-purpose yards per game, and linebacker David Gaytan will play a key role on defense.

Prediction: Raton 24, Jal 23
Grine's Pick: Raton
Favorite: Raton, -1.5 (Over/Under 48.5)

No. 8 Navajo Prep Eagles (7-2) vs No. 9 McCurdy Bobcats (7-3)

Preview: These District 1-2A rivals meet again after Navajo Prep won their regular-season game 34-14. Both teams boast similar offensive outputs, averaging around 34 points per game. Navajo Prep’s standout is Xavier Nez, a versatile three-sport athlete who has averaged over 250 total yards per game. The Bobcats, however, have had time to regroup, and with a healthier roster, they aim to close the gap and take advantage of their familiarity with Navajo Prep’s game plan.

Prediction: Navajo Prep 30, McCurdy 24
Grine's Pick: McCurdy
Favorite: Navajo Prep, -3.5 (Over/Under 52.5)
