NMPreps 2024/2025 Preseason New Mexico High School Basketball Rankings and Players to Watch

The stage is set for another thrilling season of New Mexico high school basketball as NMPreps unveils the 2024/2025 preseason rankings and top players to watch. With powerhouse programs continuing their dominance and a fresh wave of talent ready to make their mark, this season promises to be one for the books

5A Basketball

This marks the third straight season with the Volcano Vista Hawks sitting at No. 1. The Hawks are coming off a 30-1 overall season and state championship, their third consecutive state title. The Hawks are 88-2 over the three-year span without any slowing down in sight, boasting the top two ranked players in the state of New Mexico — 6-foot-7 forward Kenyon Anquino (2025), recently committed to the University of Montana. The Hawks also welcome back our second-ranked player in David Lunn, a 6-foot-4 wing with plenty of upside. This tandem has the opportunity to be one of the most talented teams in New Mexico in recent history.

Coming in ranked second in Class 5A basketball, a familiar name returns as Danny Brown (brother of Greg Brown, the head coach of Volcano Vista) will guide the Matadors back into the championship conversation after going 16-12 overall last season and reaching the quarterfinals. The Matadors return a talented duo in Thomas Adams (2025) and Zaire Ndyabagye (2025), who each had sound seasons for the Matadors last year. Coupled with those two are rising 2028 players, Gad Harris and Isaiah Brown, who each shined bright as 8th graders last season — Brown averaged 12 PPG.

The once-powerhouse Hobbs Eagles are back on the climb. After going 12-16 overall last season, the Eagles have turned over the job to former Eagles great Ronald Ross (who went on to have a stellar career at Texas Tech University). The roster is flooded with young talent, including 6-foot-11 Parker Henderson, who averaged 5.7 points and 6.6 rebounds last season but is expected to improve those numbers. Also back are leading scorers Braylon Vega (2026) and Abraham Pena (2025).

Rounding out the preseason top five are the Atrisco Heritage Jaguars and the Cleveland Storm. Atrisco Heritage, coming off a 22-9 overall season, looks to replace a talented roster, including four seniors who contributed significant minutes. Kadarius Sims (2025) becomes the leader as the senior-to-be averaged 11.7 PPG last season. Cleveland, meanwhile, looks to climb back into the conversation after a solid 22-win season, though they were upset as the No. 3 seed last March. They must replace the Steverson brothers but look to players like Remy Albrecht (2026), a two-year starter.

2024 New Mexico High School Football 8-Man State Championship Preview

By Joshua Grine, NMPreps Publisher

The stage is set for the 2024 8-Man football state championship, pitting the undefeated and reigning champions, the #1 Melrose Buffaloes (12-0), against the surging #3 Mesilla Valley Christian Son Blazers (10-1). The matchup takes place on Saturday, November 23, at 1:00 PM at Melrose High School.

Team Breakdown

#1 Melrose Buffaloes

  • Record: 12-0 Overall, 6-0 District (District 3 Champs)
  • Scoring: Outscored opponents 638-98 this season
  • Streak: Riding a 23-game win streak dating back to last season
  • Coach: Drew Hatley (3rd season, defending champion)
The Buffaloes have been a powerhouse all season, dominating on both sides of the ball. This well-rounded team has dismantled opponents with ease, scoring an average of 53 points per game while allowing just 8. They enter Saturday’s game as the defending champions, aiming to secure back-to-back titles under Head Coach Drew Hatley.

Players to Watch:
  • QB Josiah Roybal (Senior): Dual-threat quarterback with 1,821 passing yards, 604 rushing yards, and a combined 46 touchdowns (33 passing, 13 rushing).
  • RB/WR Jaxon Odom (Junior): Versatile offensive weapon with 1,000 rushing yards, 388 receiving yards, and 21 total touchdowns.
  • WR Braylen Eldridge (Senior): Leads the receiving corps with 736 yards and 13 touchdowns.
  • WR Josh Roybal (Senior): Adds depth with 450 receiving yards and 9 touchdowns.
Path to the Title:
  • Quarterfinals: Defeated #9 Lordsburg 58-6
  • Semifinals: Defeated #4 Gateway Christian 58-6

#3 Mesilla Valley Christian Son Blazers

  • Record: 10-1 Overall, 5-1 District (District 3 Runner-Up)
  • Scoring: Outscored opponents 484-166 this season
  • Coach: Noah Coyle
  • Program: In pursuit of the program’s first title since 2011
The Son Blazers have made remarkable progress under their current leadership. After a 3-5 record in 2022, 8-wins in 2023, now they’ve turned things around dramatically, reaching the state championship for the first time since their dominant 2011 victory. 10-wins this season with their only loss came at the hands of Melrose during the regular season, a defeat they hope to avenge on Saturday.

Players to Watch:
  • QB Davis Coyle: A poised pocket passer who has been instrumental in the team’s success this season.
  • WRs Mark Dwyer, Jeremiah Sullivan, and Payton Tharp: A dynamic receiving trio capable of big plays.
  • Defense: A healthier lineup this time around looks to contain Melrose’s explosive offense.
Path to the Title:
  • Quarterfinals: Defeated #6 Tatum 36-22
  • Semifinals: Defeated #2 Fort Sumner 28-22

Game Preview

In their previous meeting on September 27, Melrose overwhelmed Mesilla Valley Christian 56-12, showcasing their offensive firepower and defensive discipline. The Buffaloes have the depth, talent, and experience to impose their will again. However, the Son Blazers have improved since then and enter this rematch with a stronger, healthier roster and newfound confidence after knocking off second-seeded Fort Sumner.

For the Son Blazers to pull off the upset, they’ll need to match Melrose’s scoring output, limit turnovers, and create big plays on special teams. Stopping Melrose outright may be too tall an order, but keeping pace could give them a chance late in the game.

Melrose, on the other hand, simply needs to play its game. If Roybal and Odom continue their dominant seasons and the defense holds strong, the Buffaloes should be hoisting another trophy come Saturday afternoon.

Prediction

The Buffaloes have been unstoppable all year, and while the Son Blazers present a worthy challenge, it’s hard to see anyone derailing this juggernaut.
  • NMPreps Prediction: Melrose 64, Mesilla Valley Christian 45
  • Favorite: Melrose (-21.5)
  • Over/Under: 88.5
  • Grine’s Pick: Melrose

High Stakes and Big Matchups: New Mexico High School Football Quarterfinals

New Mexico high school football heats up this Saturday as the state playoffs enter the quarterfinal and semifinal stages across all classifications. From defending champions looking to extend their dominance to underdogs aiming to defy the odds, every matchup carries the weight of a season's dreams. With programs like La Cueva, Artesia, and Texico leading the charge, fans can expect a weekend filled with high-stakes action and unforgettable moments.

6A QUARTERFINALS

#1 La Cueva Bears (10-0) vs. #9 Hobbs Eagles (7-4)
1 PM, Wilson Stadium, Albuquerque

The undefeated La Cueva Bears enter Saturday's 6A quarterfinal matchup as defending state champions, bringing a high-powered offense and an unrelenting defense to the table. Quarterback Cameron Dyer, who has orchestrated an offense averaging 46.1 points per game, will look to pick apart the Hobbs Eagles. The Bears are not just about scoring; their defense has allowed a meager 122 points over 10 games, showcasing their dominance on both sides of the ball.

Hobbs, however, won’t back down. The Eagles, led by gunslinger Brock Beaty, who has surpassed 2,000 passing yards this season, bring a dynamic offense averaging 36.3 points per game. If Hobbs hopes to upset the top-seeded Bears, their offensive line must give Beaty time to make plays, and their defense must force turnovers against La Cueva's efficient attack.

Prediction: La Cueva 53, Hobbs 21.
Favorite: La Cueva (-31.5).
Grine's Pick: La Cueva

5A QUARTERFINALS

#2 Artesia Bulldogs (7-3) vs. #7 Lovington Wildcats (7-4)
1 PM, Bulldog Bowl, Artesia

The defending 5A state champion Artesia Bulldogs host a familiar district foe in the Lovington Wildcats, aiming to repeat their regular-season victory, a commanding 57-21 win. Artesia’s prolific passing game, led by Izac Cazares, who averages over 250 yards per game, and ATH Ethan Conn, one of his top targets, will test Lovington’s secondary. The Bulldogs have been relentless at home, thriving in the postseason atmosphere of the Bulldog Bowl.

Lovington’s hopes rest on quarterback Mathew Prudencio, who must deliver a near-perfect performance. Protecting him against Artesia’s defensive front will be critical, as well as finding ways to limit the Bulldogs’ high-octane offense.

Prediction: Artesia 48, Lovington 28.
Favorite: Artesia (-19.5).
Grine's Pick: Artesia

#4 Gadsden Panthers (7-3) vs. #5 Los Alamos Hilltoppers (8-3)
1 PM, Gadsden

The 5A bracket’s most intriguing matchup pits Gadsden against Los Alamos in a battle of contrasting styles. The Hilltoppers, champions of District 1-5A, enter with a chip on their shoulder after past playoff struggles. Quarterback Kyle Evenhus has been their leader, passing for over 2,000 yards and 23 touchdowns. However, Los Alamos will need to prove they can perform in the postseason after three consecutive first-round exits.

Gadsden’s balanced attack, powered by running back Alfredo Andrade and quarterback Adrian Munoz, poses a serious threat. Defensively, Daan Cano leads a physical unit capable of disrupting Los Alamos’ rhythm. History favors Gadsden in postseason matchups, and their experience may give them the edge.

Prediction: Gadsden 38, Los Alamos 21.
Favorite: Gadsden (-15.5).
Grine's Pick: Gadsden

4A QUARTERFINALS

#1 Bloomfield Bobcats (9-0) vs. #8 Valencia Jaguars (8-3)
1 PM, Bloomfield

The Bloomfield Bobcats, undefeated and top-seeded, enter the 4A quarterfinals boasting a high-powered offense led by standout quarterback Blake Spencer, who averages over 250 passing yards per game. With a defense that has allowed just 47 points all season and an offense scoring 46.8 points per game, the Bobcats are clear favorites to advance. Valencia, led by dynamic rusher Michael Storms III, will look to control the clock with their ground game and try to break through Bloomfield's staunch defensive front.

Prediction: Bloomfield 45, Valencia 14.
Favorite: Bloomfield (-28.5).
Grine's Pick: Bloomfield

#2 St. Pius X Sartans (8-2) vs. #7 Grants Pirates (6-5)
1 PM, Milne Stadium, Albuquerque

St. Pius X is set to defend "home turf" at Milne Stadium, with quarterback Isaiah Carpenter leading a balanced attack that averages 412.9 total yards and 32.2 points per game. The Sartans cruised to a 40-7 victory over Grants earlier this season, showcasing their offensive firepower and a defense capable of limiting opponents. Grants will rely on quarterback Tristin Fernandez and running back Andres Lazos to find a way to crack the Sartans' defense while attempting to avenge their regular-season loss.

Prediction: St. Pius X 42, Grants 20.
Favorite: St. Pius X (-21.5).
Grine's Pick: SPX

3A QUARTERFINALS

#1 St. Michael’s Horsemen (10-0) vs. #9 Thoreau Hawks (9-2)
1 PM, St. Michael’s High School, Santa Fe

St. Michael’s enters the 3A quarterfinals as the top seed, with an unbeaten record and a defense that has allowed just 59 points all season. Led by dual-threat quarterback Soren Annon, who averages 129.7 total yards per game, the Horsemen bring a balanced attack that has consistently worn down opponents. Thoreau’s Elam Smith, a prolific rusher averaging 103.3 yards per game, and quarterback Stetson Perry will look to keep the Hawks in the game, but they face their toughest challenge yet against a title-contending St. Michael’s squad.

Prediction: St. Michael’s 58, Thoreau 14.
Favorite: St. Michael’s (-44).
Grine's Pick: St. Michael's

#3 Robertson Cardinals (9-1) vs. #6 West Las Vegas Dons (6-5)
1 PM, Robertson High School, Las Vegas

The Las Vegas rivalry takes center stage again as the Cardinals and Dons meet in a high-stakes playoff rematch. Robertson edged West Las Vegas in their regular-season matchup, 28-26, behind a strong performance from quarterback Jesse James Gonzalez, who averages 283.5 total yards per game. West Las Vegas will look to quarterback CJ Perea and receiver Ethan Tafoya to exploit weaknesses, but Robertson’s well-rounded offense and stingy defense, which has only allowed 132 points this season, make them the favorites.

Prediction: Robertson 35, West Las Vegas 21.
Favorite: Robertson (-13.5).
Grine's Pick: Robertson

2A QUATERFINALS
#1 Texico (9-0) vs #8 Navajo Prep (8-2), Sat, 1pm
#2 Santa Rosa (7-3) vs #7 Raton (6-5), Sat, 1pm
#3 Legacy Academy (9-1) vs #6 Loving (7-4), Sat, 1pm - Bernalillo HS
#4 Tularosa (6-4) vs Eunice (8-3), Sat, 1pm

8-MAN SEMIFINALS

  • Time: 7:30 PM
  • Location: Logan High School, Logan, NM
Overview: The 6-Man state championship showdown between top-seeded Logan and second-seeded Grady brings two of New Mexico’s elite small-school football teams head-to-head. Logan enters with an undefeated record, showcasing both offensive firepower and a lockdown defense. Meanwhile, Grady is riding an eight-game winning streak, driven by resilience and an explosive offense. The last time these two met in September, Logan narrowly edged out Grady 32-26, setting the stage for a thrilling rematch with the state title on the line.

A Look At the Bronchos

The Grady Bronchos have been nothing short of impressive this season. Following a one-score loss to Logan earlier in the season, Grady has reeled off eight straight wins. With a high-octane offense and a defense that forces turnovers, Grady is well-prepared for this rematch.
  • Offensive Strengths: Led by sophomore QB Zander Ciancio, Grady has a potent passing game. Ciancio’s 1,132 passing yards and 25 touchdowns make him a top threat. The versatile Deakin Ragland and Trey Rush bring a dynamic edge as dual-threats with impressive yardage both rushing and receiving.
  • Defensive Standouts: Trey Rush and Andre Garcia anchor the defense. Rush leads with 77 tackles and 24 tackles for loss, while Garcia isn’t far behind with 74 tackles and 22 tackles for loss. Ragland’s six interceptions showcase his ability to disrupt opponents in the secondary.

  • Offensive Strengths: Junior quarterback Aydin Kotara and senior running back Haden Judd form a lethal backfield combination. Kotara’s 1,261 passing yards and 34 touchdowns highlight his efficiency and accuracy, while Judd’s 1,257 rushing yards and 23 rushing touchdowns show his game-breaking ability.

Why Grady Wins

  1. Passing Efficiency: With Ciancio under center, Grady has the ability to open up the game through the air. His chemistry with targets like Ragland and Rush could keep Logan’s defense on its toes.
  2. Turnover Potential: The Bronchos’ defense has shown it can capitalize on mistakes. Ragland’s six interceptions this season speak to Grady’s ability to turn the tide of a game with defensive stops.
  3. Seeking Redemption: Having narrowly lost to Logan earlier this season, Grady comes in motivated to avenge that loss and claim the state title.

Why Logan Wins

  1. Ground Dominance: Judd’s 1,257 rushing yards and 23 touchdowns make Logan the more dominant team in the run game. Controlling the clock and tempo could work heavily in Logan’s favor.
  2. Balanced Defense: With Nials, Jackson, and Wallin leading the way, Logan has a physically imposing front that could disrupt Grady’s offensive flow. Nials’ staggering 47 tackles for loss could spell trouble for Ciancio.
  3. Home Advantage: Playing at home gives Logan a familiar atmosphere, potentially enhancing their confidence and comfort in this high-stakes game.

Grine's Final Thoughts and Pick

This matchup promises to be a high-scoring affair, with both teams boasting explosive offenses and resilient defenses. Grady will need Ciancio’s passing to be on point, while Logan will rely on Judd’s ground game and their suffocating defense. This game has all the ingredients for a championship classic, but Logan’s edge in experience and defensive depth gives them the advantage in a close contest. Logan is my pick.

Feature Week 13: Friday Night Preview and Predictions

6A Quarterfinal Preview:#2 Centennial vs #7 Rio Rancho

Centennial enters the 6A quarterfinals with an undefeated 10-0 record, showcasing one of the most explosive offenses in New Mexico. The Hawks have dominated on both sides of the ball, averaging nearly 49 points per game while allowing just 21. Centennial’s ground game is led by Zaiden Davis, who has racked up 138.8 rushing yards per game, while their defense is anchored by Joseph Bitar and a strong pass rush. The Hawks’ balanced offense and stingy defense make them one of the most formidable teams in the state, with a complete effort that’s hard to beat.

Rio Rancho, at 7-4, will look to pull the upset after falling to Centennial earlier in the season, 43-27. The Rams have shown resilience, with Jace Pitt and Micah Takahashi leading the offense. Rio Rancho’s strength lies in their balanced attack, averaging 368.4 total yards per game, but they’ll need to significantly improve their defensive performance to keep pace with Centennial's high-powered offense. The Rams will need standout performances from key players like JJ Arellano and Pitt to match Centennial’s firepower and pull off the upset. However, given Centennial’s dominance and home-field advantage, the Hawks are the favorites in this matchup. Prediction: Centennial 45, Rio Rancho 24 Grine's Pick: Centennial advances to the semifinals.

6A Quarterfinal Preview: #3 Cleveland vs. #6 Los Lunas

Cleveland enters this 6A quarterfinal matchup against Los Lunas with a dominant 9-1 record and a high-powered offense that averages 45.8 points per game. The Storm’s offense is led by quarterback Jordan Hatch, who has been prolific in the passing game, throwing for 172.8 yards per game. They also have a strong rushing attack with Juan Munoz averaging 74 yards per game. Cleveland has been a juggernaut this season, winning all of their district games and outscoring opponents by a wide margin. Their defense has also been solid, allowing only 109 points on the year. Cleveland's dominant win over Los Lunas earlier this season (55-7) will give them confidence heading into this game.

Los Lunas, however, comes into the matchup with an 8-2 record and plenty of fight. The Tigers have been explosive on offense, averaging 33.2 points per game, led by standout rusher Jordan Howard, who puts up 72.3 yards per game. Quarterback Kaiden Reese has been efficient in the passing game with 93.2 yards per game, and wide receiver J'den Howard has been a reliable target. The Tigers will need to tighten up their defense to contain Cleveland’s offense and avoid another lopsided result. Los Lunas will rely on their balance and depth to try and pull off the upset, but they will need to avoid turnovers and capitalize on any opportunities that come their way to keep pace with the high-scoring Storm. Score Prediction: Cleveland 42, Los Lunas 21 Grine's Pick: Cleveland advances to the semifinals.

6A Quarterfinal Preview: #4 Volcano Vista vs. #5 Las Cruces **GAME OF THE NIGHT**

Kickoff: Friday, Nov. 15, 2024, @ 7 p.m. (Nusenda Stadium, Albuquerque)
Tournament: 2024 Nusenda Credit Union State Football Championships - 6A

Overview:
This matchup features two high-powered teams with a lot to prove. Volcano Vista (8-2) edged out Las Cruces (8-3) in their early-season meeting, rallying late to secure a narrow 27-24 victory. Both teams have shown growth since then, setting the stage for a highly competitive rematch.

Las Cruces Bulldogs:
Las Cruces boasts a prolific offense that averages 40.8 points per game, led by QB Gunnar Guardiola, who puts up 178.0 passing yards per game, and RB Daniel Amaro, who leads the rushing attack with 120.7 yards per game and 16.7 points per game. The Bulldogs’ offense starts fast, averaging nearly 28 points by halftime, and will look to overwhelm Volcano Vista early.

Defensively, Las Cruces relies on playmakers like LB Daniel Rios, who averages 8.1 tackles per game. The unit will need to contain Volcano Vista’s balanced offense and prevent explosive plays.

Volcano Vista Hawks:
The Hawks are powered by QB Ilijah Hansen, who contributes 147.7 passing yards per game, and RB Mason Gurule, who averages 70.2 rushing yards per game. While Volcano Vista scores fewer points overall (29.2 per game), their defense has been rock solid, allowing just 118 points all season.

Their late-game composure could be the deciding factor, as they average 10.4 points in the fourth quarter, showing a knack for finishing strong. On defense, Justin Martinez anchors the pass rush with 1.0 sacks per game.

Key Matchup:
The battle in the trenches will be pivotal. Volcano Vista’s defensive front needs to disrupt Amaro and the Las Cruces running game, while the Bulldogs must pressure Hansen and limit big plays from Gurule and WR Devin Dunkin.

Prediction:
Both teams have the talent to win, but Volcano Vista’s defensive consistency and their ability to make second-half adjustments give them a slight edge. Expect a close game that may come down to a final drive. Volcano Vista 28, Las Cruces 24. Grine’s Pick: Volcano Vista

5A Quarterfinal Preview: #1 Roswell vs. #9 Highland

Top-seeded Roswell (8-1) faces a determined Highland (7-4) team coming off an upset victory in the first round. The Coyotes boast a balanced offensive attack, scoring 38.2 points per game, and have a defense that has held opponents to under 200 points this season. Roswell’s postseason experience and home-field advantage could prove decisive.

Highland relies heavily on star RB Amiri Mumba, who averages an incredible 189.4 rushing yards per game and has carried the Hornets' offense. To have a shot, Highland needs a massive performance from Mumba and will have to slow down Roswell’s explosive scoring early.

Prediction:
Roswell’s depth and ability to score in all phases of the game make them the overwhelming favorite. Highland’s reliance on Mumba may not be enough to keep up. Roswell 41, Highland 21 Grine's Pick: Roswell

5A Quarterfinal Preview: #6 Mayfield vs. #3 Deming

Mayfield (5-6) faces Deming (8-2) in a rematch of a thrilling regular-season game that Deming narrowly won, 29-27. Deming’s offense, powered by Ryan Alfaro’s 146.4 rushing yards per game, has been the cornerstone of their success. Mayfield will counter with QB Luke Linnan and RB Anthony Nevarez, key players in their 32.3 points-per-game offense.

The game will likely hinge on Mayfield’s ability to slow down Deming’s run-heavy attack and capitalize on scoring opportunities. Expect another close contest, as both teams have proven they can compete under pressure.

Prediction:
Deming’s ground game and home-field advantage should propel them to another hard-fought victory. Deming 31, Mayfield 28 Grine's Pick: Deming

4A Quarterfinal Preview: #6 Española Valley vs. #3 Taos

Española Valley (8-3) looks to avenge a 27-7 loss to Taos (7-3) earlier this season in district play. Taos dominated that matchup with a strong defensive showing, holding Española Valley scoreless for three quarters. This game features two run-heavy offenses, with Española Valley averaging 256.9 rushing yards per game and Taos relying on dual-threat quarterback Evan Salazar (161.6 total yards per game).

Taos will lean on its home-field advantage and disciplined defense, while Española Valley will need a standout performance from Victor Parra to break through. If Taos can replicate its defensive success from the regular season, they should secure a spot in the semifinals.

Prediction:
Taos’ balanced attack and previous success against Española Valley give them the edge. Taos 24, Española Valley 14 Grine's Pick: Taos

4A Quarterfinal Preview: #12 Chaparral vs. #4 Bernalillo

Chaparral (4-7) comes into the quarterfinals riding high after a stunning upset over #5 Portales, but they face a tough challenge in Bernalillo (8-2), which is undefeated at home this season. Chaparral’s offense, led by QB Israel Nieto (136.2 passing yards per game), will need to find ways to break through a Bernalillo defense allowing just 11.7 points per game.

Bernalillo’s offense, led by Uriel Castro’s efficient passing (208.5 yards per game), will test a Chaparral defense that has struggled this season, giving up 328 points in 11 games. Despite their underdog status, Chaparral will aim to carry the momentum of last week’s upset into another challenging matchup.

Prediction:
Bernalillo’s balance and home-field dominance should carry the day, but Chaparral won’t go down without a fight. Bernalillo 34, Chaparral 17 Grine's Pick: Bernalillo

3A Quarterfinal Preview: #2 Dexter vs. #7 Hatch Valley

Dexter (10-0) enters this game as one of the top teams in Class 3A, boasting an undefeated record and dominant scoring average of 43.7 points per game. The Demons previously crushed Hatch Valley (7-4) in a 60-6 regular-season win, with their dynamic offense led by QB C.J. Granados and RB Omar Loya.

Hatch Valley, relying on Orrin Russell's 104.6 rushing yards per game, must find a way to control the tempo and prevent Dexter from pulling away early. Dexter’s defense, which has allowed just 69 points all season, will be a tough obstacle for Hatch to overcome.

Prediction:
Dexter's balanced attack and prior dominance make them the clear favorite to advance to the semifinals. Dexter 48, Hatch Valley 13 Grine's Pick: Dexter

3A Quarterfinal Preview: #5 NMMI vs. #4 Socorro

The New Mexico Military Institute (8-3) faces Socorro (8-2) in a 3A quarterfinal showdown. These teams recently clashed in a high-scoring affair, with Socorro narrowly escaping with a 42-35 win. Both offenses are potent, with NMMI averaging 37.5 points per game, driven by a dominant rushing attack, while Socorro’s balanced offense, led by dual-threat Isaiah Ocampo, averages 38.0 points.

NMMI’s defense will need to slow down Ocampo, who accounted for 236.2 passing yards per game this season, while Socorro must contain NMMI’s Cohen Tomasits, averaging 87 rushing yards per game. With both teams boasting explosive playmakers, this game could come down to who controls the tempo and minimizes mistakes.

Prediction:
Socorro’s home-field advantage and balanced attack give them the edge, but it’s close again. Socorro 38, NMMI 31 Grine's Pick: Socorro
