The New Mexico men’s basketball team wraps up its non-conference schedule by hosting VCU, the Atlantic 10 preseason favorite, on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in The Pit.

New Mexico (8-3, 1-0 MW) enters the game after a dominant 122-70 win over Western New Mexico, highlighted by Jovan Milicevic’s 21 points and Mountain West Freshman of the Week honors. Donovan Dent leads the Lobos with 17.7 points and 7.5 assists per game. VCU (9-2) is the first top-50 KenPom-rated non-conference visitor to The Pit since 2017-18, led by Joe Bamisile (17.2 ppg) and Max Shulga (16.5 ppg). This marks the second meeting between the teams, with VCU winning the first in 2008-09.

After a 10-day holiday break, the Lobos resume Mountain West play with road games against Colorado State and Fresno State before returning home on Jan. 3 to host Nevada in the 1,000th game at The Pit.

On Tap Wednesday Night

Bernalillo (5-5) at Española Valley (5-1)

7 PM, Edward Medina Gymnasium (Española, NM)

The Española Valley Sundevils (No. 9 NMPreps 4A Rankings) are riding a five-game win streak after dropping their season opener to Santa Fe Indian, 62-51. Now sitting at 5-1, they return to the court after an eight-day layoff to face an unranked but capable Bernalillo Spartans squad. Senior leaders Matthew Lovato and Josiah Fresquez will aim to keep the Sundevils rolling. Bernalillo, fresh off a 69-52 loss to Taos on Tuesday, seeks a quick rebound. The Spartans lean on seniors Darrion Calabaza, averaging 12.2 points per game, and Hyshtiani Kaulaity-Quintana, averaging 11.2 points per game, to spark their offense.

Prediction: Española 68, Bernalillo 51
Favorite: Española (-16.5)
Grine: Española Valley. The Sundevils are steadily improving, putting up 77 points in their last outing, well above their season average of 59.7. Their early-season loss in November to Santa Fe Indian shouldn’t overshadow their 5-0 December record. Meanwhile, Bernalillo is searching for consistency and may struggle to keep pace in this one.

Tuesday Leftovers

St. Michael’s Dominates Capital
No. 2/3A St. Michael’s flexed their muscles against crosstown rival 5A Capital, cruising to an 81-54 victory on Tuesday night. Sophomore forward Ryan Hunt had a career night, dropping 33 points as the Horsemen improved to 5-2. Meanwhile, Capital fell to 2-5, continuing to search for answers.

Texico Claims 2A Showdown
In a clash of 2A titans, No. 3/2A Texico traveled to No. 1/2A Santa Rosa and emerged victorious, 69-62. The Wolverines improved to 5-0, solidifying themselves as serious title contenders. With a talented backcourt and a balanced attack, Texico has become the team to beat in 2A.

Silver Streaks to Five Wins
Down south, 4A Silver secured a 57-40 win over 5A Gadsden, extending their win streak to five games. Now 6-2, the unranked Colts are quietly building a strong resume. Are they a team poised to break into the rankings soon? Their recent performances suggest they deserve a closer look.

KNOCKING DOWN THE TREY: 3 MUST-SEE GAMES

Capital (2-4) at St. Michael's (4-2)
7 PM | Perez-Shelley Gym, St. Michael's HS

St. Michael's (No. 2 NMPreps 3A Rankings) hosts crosstown rival Capital (5A) in tonight’s all-Santa Fe showdown. The Jaguars have endured a rough start to the season, opening 0-3 before securing wins over Aztec (4A) and Academy for Technology and the Classics (3A). Despite a narrow 55-52 loss to Pojoaque on Saturday, Capital hopes this rivalry game sparks momentum. Meanwhile, St. Michael’s is riding a two-game win streak after impressive victories over 4A foes Grants (68-51) and Los Alamos (61-23). The Horsemen boast a balanced attack led by sophomore Ryan Hunt, with 10 players averaging between 4 and 8 points per game.

Prediction: St. Michael’s 55, Capital 45
Favorite: St. Michael’s (-10.5)
Grine: St. Michael’s. I don't believe we've seen the Horsemen’s best offense yet, but they’re averaging over 64 points per game in their last two outings. Expect a great crowd tonight at Perez-Shelley Gymnasium.

Texico (4-0) at Santa Rosa (3-1)
7 PM | Santa Rosa HS

Santa Rosa (No. 1 NMPreps 2A Rankings) begins a massive week with three ranked matchups, including Menaul (No. 6/2A) and Logan (No. 4/1A). First up: a showdown with Texico (No. 3 NMPreps 2A Rankings). The Lions will rely heavily on their scoring trio of Daryn Pacheco, Josh Cordova, and Daniel Zamora, who combined for 67 of the team’s 84 points in a big win over Fort Sumner. For Texico, keep an eye on emerging sophomore guard Jett Curtis, a dangerous shooter with range and the green light from the tip. For Texico, senior guard Alex Fuentes and junior post Maverick Hawkins form a formidable core. This game could provide a glimpse of a future 2A state tournament clash.

Prediction: Santa Rosa 71, Texico 70 (OT)
Favorite: Santa Rosa (-1.5)
Grine: Santa Rosa. This is a true coin-flip matchup. Texico’s relentless full-court pressure and offensive execution mirror Santa Rosa’s disciplined and talented squad. Texico’s size could tip the scales, but I’m leaning on Santa Rosa at home in what promises to be a thrilling game.

Magdalena (5-1) at Oak Grove Classical (5-2)
7 PM | Sandia Prep HS

Oak Grove Classical (No. 5 NMPreps 2A Rankings) plays host (games held at Sandia Prep) to powerhouse Magdalena (No. 2 NMPreps 1A Rankings) in a matchup that will test both teams. Oak Grove is making waves in 2A basketball, led by standout Brody Prochnow, who’s averaging 19.5 points per game. Magdalena, however, brings pedigree and size to the court with senior “twin towers” Jeffrey Stuteville and Joseph Zamora—both over 6’5” and consistent double-double threats. The Steers, a perennial 1A powerhouse, are building toward a fifth straight state championship appearance after falling short in 2023 and 2024 but winning back-to-back titles in 2021 and 2022.

Prediction: Magdalena 68, Oak Grove Classical 59
Favorite: Magdalena (-9.5)
Grine: Magdalena. Oak Grove may be the new kid on the block, but Magdalena’s championship pedigree gives them the edge. This matchup is a fascinating test of history versus a rising program, and I’m betting on the experience and tradition of the Steers.

Grine's Daily Dimes - Monday, December 16 - Week 4
NMPreps Publisher Joshua Grine

The first three weeks of New Mexico high school basketball have flown by, with football and soccer players transitioning to the hardwood and teams finding their rhythm. As finals week and Christmas break loom, Grine’s Daily Dimes keeps you informed with the top games to watch each night. Here’s what Monday, December 16, has in store.

No. 12 3A Socorro (3-2) at No. 4 3A Robertson (3-2)

7:00 PM, Las Vegas, NM

This Class 3A matchup is the highlight of the evening and serves as a true measuring stick for both programs. Socorro, fresh off a solid two-game win streak, recently entered the NMPreps 3A Top 15 Rankings after a statement win over then-ranked Santa Fe Prep. Head coach Tim Townsend is building momentum with his Warriors, who went 3-1 in Week 3.

On the other side, Robertson has rebounded from an 0-2 start with dominant wins over Texas-Clint (76-47), No. 5 4A Valencia (70-57), and 4A Taos (78-54). They’re gaining steam behind the stellar play of All-New Mexico guard Jesse James Gonzales (2025), averaging 26.5 points, 3.5 assists, and 1.5 steals per game; who has only played in 2 games this season. Freshman George Smith (18 PPG) and sophomore Nathan Gonzales (15.2 PPG, 6.8 RPG) provide additional firepower for the Cardinals, who look poised for a special season.

Prediction: Robertson 71, Socorro 52
Favorite: Robertson (-18.5)
Grine’s Take: Robertson’s depth and size, combined with their home-court advantage, make them tough to beat. Socorro must slow the pace and control the glass to avoid getting overwhelmed by the Cardinals’ dynamic offense and size.

No. 8 1A Gateway Christian (4-2) vs. Cloudcroft (4-4)

7:30 PM, Roswell, NM

While not a marquee matchup, this game carries significant implications for both squads. Gateway Christian, led by Grady Munson (15 PPG), is searching for consistency and an identity as they aim to build a playoff-worthy resume, in 1A hoops Their battle against a 2A team like Cloudcroft will reveal a lot about their potential.

Cloudcroft, with standout Rylee Pahl (17.4 PPG, 7.6 RPG), has shown flashes of being a playoff contender in 2A. They don’t have any bad losses and narrowly fell to No. 9 3A Tularosa (55-52), proving they can compete against strong teams. If the Bears can secure this road win, it’ll be a significant boost to their postseason hopes.

Prediction: Cloudcroft 55, Gateway Christian 47
Favorite: Cloudcroft (-8.5)
Grine’s Take: This game could come down to the final possessions. Cloudcroft has the tools to pull off the win in Roswell.

Week 3 Recap: New Mexico High School Basketball - Class 1A Top Teams Watch
J Grine NMPreps Publisher

Week 3 brought plenty of movement and significant matchups among Class 1A teams, with key wins and tight battles shaping the landscape as we head into Week 4. Here’s a closer look at the top teams and their performances this past week.

Logan (5-0, Streak: 5W)
The Longhorns continue to impress, showcasing their offensive firepower with two dominant wins. On Friday, they overpowered Texas-Boise City 83-52, followed by an emphatic 73-44 victory over Tucumcari on Saturday. Logan has been firing on all cylinders offensively, scoring an average of 75.6 points per game, making them a strong favorite to reach the Class 1A Final Four this season.

Melrose (5-0, Streak: 5W)
Melrose faced tough challenges this week but managed to stay undefeated. A narrow 56-54 escape against 3A New Mexico Military Institute on Saturday showed their grit, while a convincing 59-34 win over 3A Ruidoso earlier in the week highlighted their versatility. The Buffaloes are proving they can win in different ways and remain a team to watch.

Cliff (7-1, Streak: 7W)
The Cowboys extended their winning streak to seven games after an opening-game loss to 3A Cobre. They dominated a tournament this week, defeating Carrizozo 85-27, Mountainair 54-28, and Cloudcroft 65-45 in the championship. With a balanced attack and consistent performances, Cliff is solidifying itself as a 1A contender.

Maxwell (6-1, Streak: 4W)
Maxwell delivered a perfect 3-0 week with wins over Wagon Mound (96-33), Clayton (51-50), and Cimarron (68-64). The narrow victories over Clayton and Cimarron highlight the Bears' ability to win close games under pressure, a valuable trait as they progress through the season. Are they a Final Four contender?

Magdalena (5-1, Streak: 2W)
The Steers rebounded from their Week 2 loss with two strong performances this week. A 70-23 rout over Alamo Navajo set the tone, and they followed it up with a signature win over 3A Hot Springs, 51-44. Magdalena’s defensive effort has been their calling card, and they remain a top contender in Class 1A.

Fort Sumner/House (5-1, Streak: 2W)
After suffering their first loss in Week 2, Fort Sumner/House bounced back with a perfect 3-0 week. Wins over Capitan, Escalante, and Newcomb showcased their resilience and depth. Their scoring output of 458 points this season shows they are a well-rounded and dangerous team.

Gateway Christian (4-2, Streak: 2W)
Gateway Christian had a mixed week, going 2-1 with wins over Capitan and Quemado but falling short to 2A Escalante 54-47. They are still finding consistency but have shown flashes of potential that could make them a tough opponent moving forward.

Roy/Mosquero (3-2, Streak: 1L)
Roy/Mosquero had an up-and-down week, splitting their two games. A 55-46 loss to Cimarron was a setback, also had a 66-45 win over Spring, but they continue to compete well in a tough schedule.

Cimarron (3-2, Streak: 1L)
Cimarron earned key wins over Des Moines (46-45) and Roy/Mosquero (55-46) this week before dropping a hard-fought classification game to Maxwell, 68-64. Their ability to stay competitive against strong opponents bodes well for their postseason aspirations.

Grine's Hot Teams Heading into Week 4

Logan and Melrose remain undefeated and are making themselves as favorites in Class 1A, among others. Cliff’s dominant run and Maxwell’s ability to win close games make them intriguing threats. Magdalena and Fort Sumner/House are still the top DAWGS, while Cimarron is showing it can contend with top-tier teams.

Week 4 promises to further define the Class 1A hierarchy as teams build momentum and look to solidify their standing in the state’s competitive basketball landscape. Submit your teams to watch in Class 1A Basketball.
