Weekend Trends: Bold Picks, Questions for Top-25 Teams

IT'S FRIDAY: THE WEEKEND TRENDS

Back by (un)popular demand, its the weekend predicted trends.

Well, I return with my tail between my legs after, basically missing on every pick, trend and question. So here we go as I make picks, mostly wrong -sometimes right, and just something for you to assume that I lost my mind. It is Halloween right? Maybe I am cursed after starting the first five weeks on fire with Pick 'Em and in my bold picks I have the curse of Corso.

Today, I'll throw a combo for both of them (sorry a day late..again).

WEEKEND TRENDS

In this feature I pick three bold picks that will be "trending".

1. The Upset Pick - Goddard over Artesia: This week for my upset pick I head to the SE corner of the state. I went back and forth; then back and forth again. Goddard is Goddard and I wouldn't be surprised if they in fact pull this off. The reason I say no. One the Artesia QB. Two Coach Henderson is a living legend and nothing against Whalen but he's a newbie (sort of). Well, I went against that and pick Goddard. No numbers in this one as a rivalry you can throw that out.

2. The Score - Scoring frenzy; Alamogordo 66, Clovis 64 (OT): Yup, I missed baaaadly last week taking the Centennial Hawks in a low scoring game against a 1-win Valencia team. Okay coach O'Compo my bad for picking that, sorry Valencia for making the beast stronger. This would place two teams 20-points above their average and Clovis 30-points. Alamogordo averages 46 and Clovis 34 per game.

3. The Stat - 5 Touchdown, 151 passing yards, 142 rushing yards; Kameron Miller, Las Cruces HS: The man from the south will pass and run all over the Knights. Miller, is carrying the load this season and in this contest I think Miller will make rounds as they try to make a case for the 2-seed in the post season. He currently has 1549 passing yards and 13 touchdowns.

Record: Around 9-6 (Yup went 0-3 last weekend; maybe bad news for teams I picked.)

THREE QUESTIONS FOR THE TOP-25

1. Will No. 11 Cibola be able to keep this one a low scoring game against No. 1 Cleveland? Cibola sits at (5-4) on the season and have some top-10 wins this season but they try to keep the score low. The have only allowed 150-points on the season, let's hope Cleveland who is third (401) doesn't get half of that in this game. Cibola's D will have to be at it's best as Cleveland has Ortega and Williams who might make a highlight reel of their own.

2. Another question on a Top-25 team being able to slow down an offensive juggernaut. No. 9 Manzano slowing down No. 6 Eldorado? The Monarchs (5-4) have been the surprise rise this season but can they maintain that against the number two offense in Eldorado (402)? The Monarchs are only allowing 182 points per game this season and will have to slow down the attack.

3. Can the No. 25 Capital Jaguars win the biggest game of their recent history? If you told me three years ago that the Jaguars would be ranked in the top-25 I would ask what you were drinking (maybe out of my glass, since my picks get called that once or twice). They take on Espanola Valley who was ranked last week before being upset by Los Alamos. So the attention is on you now Capital, can you overcome the hype, the revenge minded Espanola Sundevils who want to earn back what they lost. Playoffs on the mind and on the line.

PICK'EM

Can you believe that at one point in my time (week four and five) I wore the yellow jersey and lead the entire darn site in points. Yeah now I am on the verge of missing the playoffs as I am only up by 500 points and to who else other than a Giants fan. For now El Muchacho we are no longer friends, we are rivals!

Henderson: Your team's chicness of making the playoffs

Please do not copy and past our premium information on social media sites

District 1-6A

Cleveland 8-0, 2-0
Who’s Left: Cibola and Rio Rancho
Playoff Chances: 100%
Key Wins: Manzano, Clovis, and Eldorado
Key Losses: None
Notes: No. 1 seed if they finish 10-0

Rio Rancho 7-2, 3-0
Who’s Left: Cleveland
Playoff Chances: 100%
Key Wins: Clovis, Atrisco, Volcano Vista
Key Losses: Las Cruces
Notes: Have won 5 in a row, can argue for a Top 4 seed if Las Cruces was to drop final two games or if Eldorado does not win District 2-6A.

Volcano Vista 5-4, 1-2
Who’s Left: Santa Fe
Playoff Chances: 100%
Key Wins: Sandia, Manzano, Atrisco, West Mesa
Key Losses: Las Cruces, Eldorado, Rio Rancho, Cleveland
Notes: Will finish ahead of Cibola in District play

Cibola 5-3, 0-2
Who’s Left: Cleveland and Santa Fe
Playoff Chances: TBA
Key Wins: Albuquerque, Manzano,
Key Losses: Clovis, Volcano Vista, Rio Rancho
Notes: Beating Cleveland would lock in their playoff spot, 6-4 finish will place them on the bubble

Santa Fe 0-8, 0-2
Who’s Left: Volcano Vista and Cleveland
Playoff Chances: 0%
Key Wins: None
Key Losses: Lost to Rio Rancho, Cleveland
Notes: Are currently winless

District 2-6A

Manzano 5-3, 2-0
Who’s Left: Eldorado and La Cueva
Playoff Chances: 60%
Key Wins: West Mesa, Mayfield, Sandia
Key Losses: Cleveland, Volcano Vista, Cibola
Notes: If they beat Eldorado or lose by less than 8 pts they are District 2-6A Champs, losing to Eldorado and to La Cueva could knock them out of the playoffs as they would be third in district with a loss to Cibola

Sandia 6-3, 2-1
Who’s Left: Highland
Playoff Chances: 100%
Key Wins: Atrisco, Albuquerque, Carlsbad, Eldorado, La Cueva
Key Losses: Volcano Vista, Cleveland, and Manzano
Notes: If they take care of Highland, they will be 7-3, no way they are staying home no matter the outcomes of Manzano and Eldorado

Eldorado 7-2, 2-1
Who’s Left: Manzano
Playoff Chances: 100%
Key Wins: West Mesa, Volcano Vista, Mayfield, La Cueva
Key Losses: Cleveland and Sandia
Notes: If they beat Manzano by more than 8 points they are the District 2-6A Champs, will also land a top 4 spot in the playoffs. Loss to Manzano puts them at seeds: 6, 7, or 8

La Cueva 2-6, 0-2
Who’s Left: Highland and Manzano
Playoff Chances: 0%
Key Wins: Atrisco Heritage
Key Losses: Las Cruces, Rio Rancho, Cibola, Valley, Eldorado, Sandia
Notes: Even if they beat Highland and Manzano they would at best case finish third in district, but their overall resume is not strong enough to get them into the playoffs.

Highland 2-6, 0-2
Who’s Left: Sandia
Playoff Chances: 0%
Key Wins: Albuquerque
Key Losses: West Mesa, Alamo, Atrisco, Manzano, Eldorado,
Notes: Do you meet qualifications to be eligible

District 3-6A

Las Cruces 6-2, 3-0
Who’s Left: Onate and Mayfield
Playoff Chances: 100%
Key Wins: Volcano Vista, Rio Rancho, Artesia, Deming, Gadsden
Key Loses: Centennial
Notes: If they win their last two they are a top 4, if they lose to Onate and Mayfield they are still in, but who knows where on the bracket, if they finish 2nd in district they will be seeds 5, 6, 7, or 8

Mayfield 5-3, 2-0
Who’s Left: Gadsden and Las Cruces
Playoff Chances: 80%
Key Wins: Hobbs, Carlsbad, Onate, Deming
Key Losses: Alamoogordo, Eldorado, Manzano
Notes: Beat Gadsden and their chances change to 100%, finish 4-0 in district and land a top 4, 5, or 6 spot. Loss to Las Cruces doesn’t kill their hopes, they could be on the road depending on what goes down in District 4-6A, remember they lost to Alamogordo

Onate 4-5, 2-1
Who’s Left: Las Cruces
Playoff Chances: 40%
Key Wins: West Mesa, Deming, Gadsden
Key Losses: Cleveland, Hobbs, Mayfield
Notes: Beat Las Cruces and the seeding committee cannot take Las Cruces without taking Onate first, which would mean likely three teams from District 3-6A make it. Lose to Las Cruces and they are out, it’s pretty cut and dry for the Knights. Consider this their playoff/play-in game.

Gadsden 1-7, 0-2
Who’s Left: Mayfield and Deming
Playoff Chances: 0%
Key Wins: Santa Teresa
Key Losses: Las Cruces and Onate
Notes: Do you meet qualifications to be eligible

Deming 3-6, 0-3
Who’s Left: Gadsden
Playoff Chances: 0%
Key Wins: Carlsbad, Silver,
Key Losses: Las Cruces, Onate, and Mayfield
Notes: Do you meet qualifications to be eligible

District 4-6A

Clovis 5-3, 1-0
Who’s Left: Alamogordo and Carlsbad
Playoff Chances: 90%
Key Wins: Goddard, Cibola, Atrisco, Hobbs
Key Losses: Cleveland, Rio Rancho,
Notes: Playoff lock unless something out of this world happens like losing their final two games against Alamogordo and Carlsbad which would place them who knows where in the district. Beating Alamogordo takes their playoff chances to 100%. Should field a home game if they win out.

Carlsbad 1-7, 1-0
Who’s Left: Hobbs and Clovis
Playoff Chances: 50%
Key Wins: Alamogordo
Key Losses: Deming, Mayfield, Artesia, Sandia, Goddard
Notes: Playoff eligible? Yes, until they lose a district game. They could finish 2-1 in district with a tie for first in district and reach the playoffs. If they are able to beat Hobbs, consider these guys a bubble playoff team. Clearly these guys aren’t dead just yet and their case shows you the importance of district placement come seeding time.

Alamogordo 6-2, 0-1
Who’s Left: Clovis and Hobbs
Playoff Chances: 50%
Key Wins: Los Lunas, Mayfield
Key Losses: Artesia, Carlsbad
Notes: Back is against the wall now and they have to beat Clovis or Hobbs to stay in the mix. A loss to Clovis would put them in last place in district and mean if they wanted to have a shot: They would have to hope to beat Hobbs in the final game of the season. Amazing to think their 6-0 start doesn’t mean much come the late season.

Hobbs 4-4, 0-1
Who’s Left: Carlsbad and Alamogordo
Playoff Chances: 50%
Key Wins: Roswell, Onate, Goddard,
Key Losses: Mayfield, Artesia, Clovis
Notes: Don’t have a strong resume right now, which means they need to finish out winning their last two games to become a playoff bubble team. 6-4 and 2-1 in district looks pretty good especially if Las Cruces beats Onate.

District 5-6A

Atrisco Heritage 4-5, 3-0
Who’s Left: West Mesa
Playoff Chances: 50%
Key Wins: Highland, Albuquerque, Valley
Key Losses: La Cueva, Sandia, Clovis, Rio Rancho
Notes: Beat West Mesa and they are in, it’s that simple

West Mesa 3-5, 2-0
Who’s Left: Atrisco Heritage, Albuquerque
Playoff Chances: 50%
Key Wins: Highland, Valley, Rio Grande
Key Losses: Valencia, Eldorado, Manznao, Onate, Volcano Vista
Notes: Have to beat Atrisco Heritage and Albuquerque to get into the playoffs.

Albuquerque 3-5, 1-1
Who’s Left: Rio Grande and West Mesa
Playoff Chances: 30%
Key Wins: Valencia, Miyamura, Valley
Key Losses: Cibola, Del Norte, Sandia, Highland, Atrisco
Notes: Have to hope West Mesa beats Atrisco, and they have to beat Rio Grande and West Mesa to force three-way district tie between: West Mesa, Atrisco, and Albuquerque. Bulldogs are still not out of the playoffs, but there is a lot that has to go down in their favor.

Rio Grande 0-8, 0-2
Who’s Left: Albuquerque, Valley
Playoff Chances: 0%
Key Wins: None
Key Losses: Eldorado, HIghland, Manzano, Los Lunas, Onate, St. Pius X
Notes: Notes: Do you meet qualifications to be eligible

Valley 2-7, 0-3
Who’s Left: Rio Grande
Playoff Chances: 9%
Key Wins: La Cueva and Aztec
Key Losses: Rio Rancho, Eldorado, Ciboa, Sandia, West Mesa, Atrisco, ABQ High
Notes: Notes: Do you meet qualifications to be eligible

Class 5A

District 1-5A

Piedra Vista 7-2, 3-0
Who’s Left: Gallup
Playoff Chances: 100%
Key Wins: Goddard, Moriarty, Farmington, Miyamura, Aztec
Key Losses: Roswell
Notes: With a win over Gallup, Piedra Vista will likely be a top 4 seed. Their win over Moriarty is out-sines their loss to Roswell since the Pintos are a likely District Champ.

Aztec 3-6, 2-1
Who’s Left: Miyamura
Playoff Chances: 50%
Key Wins: Kirtland, Gallup, Farmington
Key Losses: Del Norte, Cobre, Valley, Piedra Vista
Notes: Beat Miyamura on November 6th and they have a great chance to be selected as one of the 12 to get in as the seeding committee cannot take Farmington without placing Aztec first. Even if Aztec finishes 3-1 in district, their resume is not strong enough to be a lock.

Gallup 3-5, 1-1
Who’s Left: Piedra Vista and Farmington
Playoff Chances: 5%
Key Wins: Miyamura
Key Losses: Grants, Espanola, Moriarty, Aztec
Notes: Have to beat both Piedra Vista and Farmington to shake up the district standings. Losing to either team knocks them out.

Miyamura 3-5, 0-2
Who’s Left: Farmington and Aztec
Playoff Chances: 5%
Key Wins: Moriarty, Grants
Key Losses: St. Pius X, ABQ High, PV, Gallup
Notes: The Patriots have lost their last 4 games in a row, need to upset Farmington and Aztec to even have a shot, that loss to Gallup really hurts and over shines their early season win over Moriarty.

Farmington 5-3, 0-2
Who’s Left: Miyamura, Gallup
Playoff Chances: 40%
Key Wins: Los Lunas, Belen, Los Alamos, and Grants
Key Losses: Piedra Vista and Aztec
Notes: Their playoff resume is good, but their district placement could keep them form the playoffs. They have to beat Miyamura and a rising Gallup team to finish third in district. That Los Lunas head to head as well as their head to head win over Los Alamos turned out to be very important.

District 2-5A

Capital 7-2, 3-0
Who’s Left: Espanola
Playoff Chances: 70%
Key Wins: Silver, Santa Fe, West LV, Lovington, Los Alamos, Bernalillo, Del Norte
Key Losses: St. Mike’s and Robertson
Notes: Can win the district and earn auto bid to playoffs with win over Espanola. A loss would likely create a three-way tie for first place between Capital, Espanola, and Los Alamos (If Los Alamos is able to beat Bernalillo and Del Norte). Worst case: They lose to Espanola Friday and finish second in district, they likely are still making the 12-team bracket.

Los Alamos 3-5, 1-1
Who’s Left: Bernalillo and Del Norte
Playoff Chances: 35%
Key Wins: Pojoaque, Santa Fe, Espanola
Key Losses: St. Pius X, Moriarty, Kirtland, Farmington, Capital
Notes: Have to win out first off all, then hope that Espanola beats Capital by more than 14 points. If they finish second in district (if Capital beats Espanola Friday Night) they likely stay home as their resume is not strong enough to get an At Large bid.

Espanola 7-1, 1-1
Who’s Left: Capital and Bernalillo
Playoff Chances: 45%
Key Wins: West LV, Pojoaque, Gallup, Taos, Del Norte
Key Losses: Los Alamos
Notes: That loss to Los Alamos is bad, bad, bad. Now they have to beat Capital, consider that game their playoff/play-in game. They also have to hope for Los Alamos to lose their final two games of the season (Toppers play Bernalilo and Del Norte). If Capital beats Espanola and Los Alamos wins out, Espanola is done.

Del Norte 3-6, 1-2
Who’s Left: Los Alamos
Playoff Chances: 35%
Key Wins: Albuquerque, Aztec, Bernalillo
Key Losses: St. Pius X, Centennial, Los Lunas, Espanola, Capital
Notes: Check this out. If Del Norte beats Los Alamos by 10 and Capital beats Esapanola by 7, Del Norte would finish second in the district with a 2-2 record. Remember they beat Aztec head to head.

Bernalillo 0-8, 0-2
Who’s Left: Los Alamos and Espanola
Playoff Chances: 0%
Key Wins: None
Key Losses: Del Norte and Capital
Notes: Do you meet qualifications to be eligible

District 3-5A

Centennial 8-0, 3-0
Who’s Left: Belen, Santa Teresa
Playoff Chances: 100%
Key Wins: Onate, Del Norte, Las Cruces, Los Luas, Chaparral, Valencia
Key Losses: None
Notes: If they close out undefeated, the Hawks will land the No. 1 seed in Class 5A. Can Artesia argue for the No. 1 spot? Yes, but remember Centennial beat Las Cruces and Las Cruces beat Artesia head to head.

Chaparral 6-2, 2-1
Who’s Left: Los Lunas, Belen
Playoff Chances: 40%
Key Wins: Gadsden, Valencia
Ley Losses: Centennial
Notes: Chaparral still controls their own destiny down the stretch, all they really have to do is beat either Los Lunas or Belen. If they were to split the last two games of the season, they would likely finish third in district with a 7-3 record, that would make it tough for the seeding committee to leave this group out. If they lose both, they are out.

Los Lunas 4-4, 2-1
Who’s Left: Chaparral and Valencia
Playoff Chances: 55%
Key Wins: Del Norte, Santa Teresa, Belen
Key Losses: Farmington, Alamogordo, Goddard, Centennial
Notes: They have to win both games, which would put them 2nd in the district with a record of 4-1 in district and make it tough to leave this group out. However, notice their early season loss to Farmington, that could come back to haunt them. All they can do is win out, lose one more district game and they are done.

Belen 2-6, 2-1
Who’s Left: Centennial, Chaparral
Playoff Chances: 20%
Key Wins: Santa Teresa, Valencia
Key Losses: Artesia, Moriarty, Farmington, Goddard, Roswell, Los Lunas
Notes: The best hope for Belen is to beat Centennial which has been impossible for every other team in the district so far, but Belen did beat the Hawks twice last year… The Eagles have looked decent as of late but even if they split their last two and finish 3-2 in district, not sure if their resume is strong enough to get them in.

Valencia 1-7, 0-3
Who’sLeft: Santa Teresa, Los Lunas
Playoff Chances: 0%
Key Wins: West Mesa
Key Losses: Artesia, Albuquerque, Moriarty, Chaparral, Belen, Centennial
Notes: Do you meet qualifications to be eligible

Santa Teresa 1-7, 0-3
Who’s Left: Valencia, Chaparral
Key Wins: None
Key Losses: Belen, Los Lunas, Chaparral
Notes: Do you meet qualifications to be eligible

District 4-5A

Artesa 7-1, 1-0
Who’s Left: Goddard, Lovington
Playoff Chances: 100%
Key Wins: Belen, Hobbs, Valencia, Deming, Carlsbad, Alamogordo, Roswell
Key Losses: Las Cruces
Notes: Obviously in, but they still have to take care of business against two more district rivals. Win out and we have them at the No. 2 spot behind Centennial. We all know anything can happen when Goddard and Artesia, get together, so stayed tuned. If Artesia was to lose to Goddard and beat Lovington, and Goddard was to lose to Roswell it comes down to a three-way tie for the district tile. Right now Artesia is +8, Goddard is 0, and Roswell is -8

Goddard 5-3, 1-0
Who’s Left: Artesia and Roswell
Playoff Chances: 100%
Key Wins: Los Lunas Belen, Carlsbad, Lovington
Key Losses: Clovis, Piedra Vista, Hobbs
Notes: Goddard can land up with a Top 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8, it just depends on what goes down these next two weeks. Beat both, top 4 seed, split by losing to Artesia, and beating Roswell, they be 6, 7, or 8. If they beat Artesia and lose to Roswell it would create a three-way tie for first place and come down to the 13-point rule. Currently Artesia is +8 and Roswell is -8 and Goddard is 0.

Roswell 4-4, 0-1
Who’s Left: Lovington, Goddard
Playoff Chances: 75%
Key Wins: Silver, Belen, Piedra Vista
Key Losses: Hobbs, Moriarty, Artesia
Notes: Roswell cannot, cannot, cannot, cannot lose to Lovington. That would quite possibly end their season, especially if they were to lose to Goddard as well. Not likely the case as the Coyotes have been playing some good ball. If they beat Lovington and lose to Goddard they are still in, but where on the bracket? Maybe a 7, 8, or 9 seed. If they beat both Lovington and Goddard to finish 6-4 and 2-1 in district, they could be a 5 or a 6 seed.

Lovington 1-7, 0-1
Who’s Left: Roswell, Artesia
Playoff Chances: 10%
Key Wins: Ruidoso
Key Losses: Portales, Silver, Capital, Hobbs, St. Pius X, Goddard
Notes: Have to win out, that is pretty much their only hope.

District 5-5A

Moriarty 7-2, 1-0
Who’s Left: NA
Playoff Chances: 100%
Key Wins: Belen, Los Alamos, Valencia, Gallup, Roswell, Grants, St. Pius X
Key Losses: Miyamura, Piedra Vista
Notes: District Champs with a 2-0 record in district and after beating St. Pius X 21-14. Likely landing a top 4 seed in the playoffs.

St. Pius X 8-1, 0-1
Who’s Left: Grants
Playoff Chances: 100%
Key Wins: Del Norte, Los Alamos, Gallup, Miyamura, St. Mike’s, Rio Grande, Lovington
Key Losses: Moriarty
Notes: They are in the playoffs with a win over Grants, they would likely still make the playoffs with a loss to Grants as they finish at worse 8-2 and have a few key victories. Likely a 5, 6, or 7 seed in the playoffs.

Grants 4-4, 0-1
Playoff Chances: 0%
Who’s Left: St. Pius X
Key Wins: Gallup, Hope,
Key Losses: Miyamura, Farmington, Moriarty
Notes: Do you meet qualifications to be eligible

District 1-4A

Bloomfield 7-1, 3-0
Who’s Left: Zuni, Kirtland Central
Playoff Chances: 100%
Key Wins: Aztec, Pojoaque, Socoorro, Taos, Wingate, Shiprock, Thoreau
Key Losses: Hope Christian
Notes: Bloomfield is in regardless of what goes down, we know they are going to beat Zuni by whatever and they are the overwhelming favorite against Kirtland. Their loss to Hope Christian could put them outside of a Top 4 seed, but either way these guys are hosting a playoff game.

Kirtland Central 4-4, 3-0
Who’s Left: Shiprock, Bloomfield
Playoff Chances: 50%
Key Wins: Los Alamos, Zuni, Thoreau, Wingate
Key Losses: Bayfield, Farmington, Aztec, Piedra Vista
Notes: Hard to seed a team like Kirtland Central because they have no key wins and no key losses when looking at seeding criteria. If there were more decent teams in 4A Kirtland likely misses out. Beat Shiprock and lose to Bloomfield, these guys are likely in as the 10, 11, or 12 seed.

Shiprock 4-4, 2-1
Who’s Left: Kirtland, Wingate
Playoff Chances: 35%
Key Wins: Questa, Navajo Prep, Thoreau, Zuni
Key Losses: Bloomfield, Socorro
Notes: Beat Kirtland Central and you’re in Shiprock fans, it’s that easy. With a loss, the balance hangs in the hopes that the seeding committee forgot that Socorro beat Shiprock 66-30 in week 1.

Zuni 3-5, 1-2
Do not meet playoff criteria

Wingate 2-7, 0-3
Do not meet playoff criteria

Thoreau 3-5, 0-3
Do not meet playoff criteria

District 2-4A

Robertson 6-2, 1-0
Who’s Left: Taos, West LV
Playoff Chances: 100%
Key Wins: Santa Rosa, St. Mike’s, Capital, Ruidoso, Clayton, Pojoaque
Key Losses: Portales, Cobre
Notes: If Robertson wins out their early season losses to Portales and Cobre are going to determine their seed, but likely a 5, 6, at the very lowest a 7 seed, which doesn’t seem likely. The Cardinals are a tough team with good wins. A loss to Taos would shake everything up, let’s wait on that.

Taos 4-4, 1-0
Who’s Let: Robertson, Pojoaque
Playoff Chances: 50%
Key Wins: Laguna, Academy, West LV,
Key Loses: Hope, St. Mikes, Bloomfield, Espanola
Notes: Their season hangs onto the balance of their final two results. Split the final two which is most likely and they are a 11 or 12 seed, hard to see them being left out. Who has a stronger resume: Them or Kirtland Central?

West Las Vegas 3-5, 0-1
Who’s Left: Pojoaque, Robertson
Playoff Chances: 10%
Key Wins: Laguna Acoma, Raton, Tucumcari
Key Losses: Clayton, Espanola, Capital, Hatch, Taos,
Notes: Have to win out to make the playoffs, pretty cut and dry here

Pojoaque 0-8, 0-2
Do not meet playoff criteria

District 3-4A

Hatch Valley 9-0, 3-0
Who’s Left: Hot Springs
Playoff Chances: 100%
Key Wins: Dexter, Ruidoso, Lordsburg, West LV, Socorro, Silver, Cobre
Key Losses: None
Notes: Either the No. 1 or No. 2 seed come selection Sunday. Still have to take care of Hot Springs, margin of victory is 45-10 this year.

Cobre 5-3, 1-1
Who’s Left: Socorro, Silver
Playoff Chances: 100%
Key Wins: Robertson, Aztec, Lordsburg, Hot Springs
Key Losses: Hatch Valley
Notes: Very good team and strong resume, two tough games remaining on their schedule, could be a top 4 seed if they win out.

Silver 4-5, 2-1
Who’s Left: Cobre
Playoff Chances: 100%
Key Wins: Lovington, Hot Springs, Socorro
Key Losses: Hatch, Roswell, Deming
Notes: Best sub .500 team in Class 4A. Could land a home game in the playoffs if they upset Cobre on November 6th.

Socorro 5-3, 0-2
Who’s Left: Cobre, Hot Springs
Playoff Chances: 50%
Key Wins: Shiprock, Laguna, Academy, Raton
Key Losses: Bloomfield, Hatch, Silver
Notes: Could sneak into the playoffs this year, that win over Shiprock could come into play. Need to win at least one district game to be a lock.

Hot Springs 5-3, 0-2
Who’s Left: Hatch, Socorro
Playoff Chances: 50%
Key Wins: Thoreau, Lordsburg
Key Losses: NMMI, Silver, Cobre
Notes: Need to win a district game or else they will be 0-4 in district come seeding time and as you can see they don’t have one marquee win.

District 4/5-4A

Portales 8-0, 2-0
Who’s Left: St. Mike’s, NMMI
Playoff Chances: 100%
Key Wins: Robertson, Lovington, Texico, Eunice, Dexter, Hope, Ruidoso
Key Losses: None
Notes: Will land No. 1 or No. 2 seed if they close out undefeated.

St. Mike’s 5-3, 1-1
Who’s Left: Portales, Ruidoso
Playoff Chances: 80%
Key Wins: Capital, Taos, NMMI
Key Losses: Robertson, St. Pius X, Hope
Notes: Loss to Hope Christian hurts, but they can still finish 2nd in the district even at 2-2. Tough two games lined up with Portales and Ruidoso. Hard to see them missing the playoffs even with them going 5-5 to end the year.

NMMI 7-1, 1-1
Who’s Left: Hope, Portales
Playoff Chances: 80%
Key Wins: Ft. Sumner, Capitan, Hot Springs, Ruidoso, Academy
Key Losses: St. Mike’s
Notes: Killer record and though they have played a light schedule, they have three key wins that should get them a potential home game: Hot Springs, Ruidoso, and Academy. Two tough games to close out, but even at 7-3 they should be safe.

Ruidoso 3-6, 1-2
Who’s Left: St. Mike’s
Playoff Chances: 50%
Key Wins: Pojoaque, Hope
Key Losses: Hatch, Lovington, Robertson, NMMI, Portales
Notes: That win over Hope Christian looks great now that the Huskies beat St. Mike’s. They don’t have too many marquee wins, but they have played a tough schedule.

Hope 6-3, 1-2
Who’s Left: NMMI
Playoff Chances: 60%
Key Wins: Academy, Taos, Santa Rosa, Bloomfield, St. Mike’s
Key Losses: Grants, Portales, Ruidoso
Notes: Their recent win over St. Mike’s was huge and tag that up with their win over Bloomfield and Taos and these guys have a good resume. Beating NMMI solidifies their ticket, hard to see these guys left out.

District 1-3A

Navajo Prep 3-4, 1-0
Who’s Left: Newcomb, Crownpoint
Playoff Chances: 50%
Key Wins: Zuni, Thoreau, Tohatchi,
Key Losses: Estancia, Escalante, Shiprock, Dexter
Notes: This team is the district favorite each year, beating Newcomb and Crownpoint is likely, expect these guys to be in the playoffs somewhere.

Crownpoint 4-4, 1-0
Who’s Left: Tohatchi, Navajo Prep
Playoff Chances: 50%
Key Wins: Zuni, Dulce, Newcomb, Navajo Pine
Key Losses: Wingate, Thoreau, SF Indian
Notes: If they win out they are in the playoffs, lose and they are out

District 2-3A

Estancia 9-0, 1-0
Who’s Left: Cuba, Laguna
Playoff Chances: 100%
Key Wins: Lovington, Navajo Prep, Tucumcari, Capitan, Santa Rosa, Tularosa, Clayton, Dulce
Key Losses: None
Notes: Clear cut No. 1, should polish off Cuba and Laguna with ease

Laguna Acoma 3-4, 1-0
Who’s Left: Dulce, Estancia
Playoff Chances: 40%
Key Wins: SF Indian, Tohatchi, Cuba
Key Losses: West LV, Socorro, Taos, Santa Rosa,
Notes: Don’t have a strong resume, but there are not many teams in the 8-12 range in 3A that do

District 3-3A

Lordsburg 5-3, 1-0
Who’s Left: Mesilla, Tularosa
Playoff Chances: 100%
Key Wins: Newcomb, Capitan
Key Losses: Hatch, Hot Springs, Cobre
Notes: None of their three losses are bad losses, in-fact they are unbeaten against 3A comp so far. Finishing out unbeaten in District, they’ll land a top 4 seed.

Capitan 4-4, 0-1
Who’s Left: Tularosa, Mesilla Valley
Playoff Chances: 100%
Key Wins: Hagerman, Jal, Texico, Loving,
Key Losses: NMMI, Estancia, Lordsburg
Notes: Good ball club, that win over Texico is going to really help out if they take care of Tularosa and Mesilla Valley to finish out. Look for them to be a 5, 6, or 7 seed.

Tularosa 1-7, 1-0
Who’s Left: Capitan, Lordsburg
Playoff Chances: 10%
Key wins: Mesilla Valley
Key Losses: Hot Springs, Dexter, Eunice, Cobre, Ruidoso, Hatch, Estancia,
Notes: Have to split their next to games to stay ahead of Mesilla in district, winning both would obviously make them district champs. Not quite dead.

Mesilla Valley 2-6, 0-1
Who’s Left: Lordsburg, Capitan
Playoff Chances: 10%
Key Wins: None
Key Losses: NMMI, Jal, Hot Springs, Hagerman, Tularosa
That loss to Tularosa might of ended their season if they can’t upset Lordsburg or Capitan.

District 4-3A

Eunice 4-3, 1-0
Who’s Left: Loving, Texico
Playoff Chances: 100%
Key Wins: Tularosa, Jal, Dexter
Key Losses: Clayton, Portales,
Notes: Their opening district win puts them in the drive seat to win the district, beating Texico on Nov. 6th is going to be tough, but they are in with a win over the Demons. That loss to Clayton could put them at the 4 or 5 spot in the tournament (if they and Clayton win out)

Texico 3-4, 1-0
Who’s Left: Dexter, Eunice
Playoff Chances: 100%
Key wins: Santa Rosa, Clayton, Loving
Key Losses: Tucumcari, Capitan,
Notes: Good wins over Santa Rosa and Clayton should over shine their hiccup against Tucumcari. Still could win the district and land a top 4 seed, but likely behind Capitan as that loss to the Tigers was big. This team seems to be peeking at the right time. Win over Clayton is very important.

Dexter 5-3, 0-1
Who’s Left: Texico, Loving
Playoff Chances: 100%
Key Wins: Tularosa, Hagerman, Tucumcari, Santa Rosa, Navajo Prep
Key Losses: Hatch, Portales, Eunice
Notes: Their loss against Eunice hurts in terms of district play, but it would be shocking if they are on the road in the playoffs. This weekend match up against Texico should be telling.

Loving 3-5, 0-1
Who’s Left: Eunice, Dexter
Playoff Chances: 15%
Key Wins: Hagerman, Jal,
Key Losses: Capitan, Ft. Sumner, Texico
Notes: Have not played a top tier schedule, their wins over some 2A teams are decent, they played Capitan close, and they are likely to go 0-3 in district. Not sure if a 3-7 team will land a spot.

District 5-3A

Santa Rosa 3-5, 1-0
Who’s Left: Tucumcari, Clayton
Playoff Chances: 100%%
Key Wins: Laguna Acoma, Raton
Key Losses: Texico, Robertson, Hope, Estancia, Dexter
Notes: It’s odd not seeing Santa Rosa as a top tier team in Class 3A, however they’ll likely still land a playoff game thanks to their recent win over Raton. If they beat Tucumcari, they’ll be in the driver seat for a home playoff game and the district championship.

Clayton 3-5, 1-0
Who’s Left: Raton, Santa Rosa
Playoff Chances: 100%
Key Wins: West LV, Eunice, Tucumcari
Key Losses: Texico, Robertosn, Estancia,
Notes: Clayton has lost their last 5 out of 6 games, before beating Tucumcari last weekend 34-7. They don’t have many key wins, but have played a very difficult schedule and could be a tough out for the remainder of the season. Look for them to be a 4-7 seed if they win out, especially if Eunice wins District 4-3A.

Tucumcari 2-5, 0-1
Who’s Left: Santa Rosa, Raton
Playoff Chances: 50%
Key Wins: Texico, Ft. Sumner
Key Losses: Escalante, Estancia, Dexter, West LV, Clayton
Notes: If they split their remaining two games of the season, they are in. That win over Texico looks great, beat Raton on Nov 6th and they’ll be in the playoffs somewhere between 9-12.

Raton 2-6, 0-1
Who’s Left: Clayton, Tucumcari
Playoff Chances: 50%
Key Wins: McCurdy, Questa,
Key Losses: Escalante, West LV, Socorro, Santa Rosa
Notes: Similar situation to Tucumcari: Need to at least split their remaining two games to make the playoffs.

Top 25 Head Coaches in New Mexico for 2015-2016: 6A-4A
by: Joshua J Grine of NMPreps.com

Which coaches in New Mexico are the best, today?

We ask this question yearly and many avoid ranking the coaches, we know the list is great and we have plenty that are worthy of the list. We asked NMPreps.com to voice their opinions and we took that into consideration. Our list isn't based solely on career-oriented but what happened in the last three seasons. It's not a list on legacy of coaches.

Our list has some obvious names, some might come as a surprise and you might be surprised as some names left off. We compiled our list, ranked 'em and now the fun part - our display. Don't hit the reply button to fast, or do, that's what makes it fun to be apart of this community.

No. 25 ANTHONY MESTAS
Goddard H.S. (other stops: Hagerman) | 253-63 (Career Record)

With 72-schools in the big school divisions (6A-4A) we kick off the list with a respected and young(er) coach in the New Mexico head coach fraternity circle. He left his post at Hagerman in the sumer of 2014 to lead the Goddard Rockets in 5A basketball. If you dig deep into his resume you will realize that Mestas should top make the list, even if he has only spent a year in the big school division. At, Hagerman High School he left with two state championships (2011, 2014) and one undefeated season in2011 (31-0). The Goddard Rockets are on the rise and expected to be an Elite Eight team (maybe a later prediction sneak peak). The Rockets went 13-5 last season and this summer he brought his squad to the metro area and displayed why he starts our ranking of head coaches in New Mexico for 2015-2016.

No. 24 RON GARCIA
Albuquerque H.S. (other stops: Moriarty, Rio Grande) | 242-278 (Career Record)

There's nothing like a Final Four run as a six seed to boost your stock. Looking strictly at his teams (not outside chatter) he helped lead the 6-seed Albuquerque High to an upset win over No. 3 Carlsbad, winning 22-games last season. Garcia, depending on who you talk with is either too low or shouldn't make the top-25. Albuquerque High has the historic flare to the name but took a dip after the retirement of legendary head coach Jim Hulsman. Garcia's history has gone from Moriarty to Rio Grande and now Albuquerque High. He has yet to reach the title game but a pair of Final Fours (Rio Grande in the mid-2000's and last season) and if we stick to the storyline he is back in the game. The Bulldogs should be another Elite Eight or possibly Final Four team.

No. 23 TERRY DARNELL
Bernalillo H.S. | 280-267 (Career Record)

Each season the Bernalillo Spartans are a team that overachieve playing in class 4A. Darnell, is known for developing excellent shooting guards that have led the state in scoring or near the top. He knows how to get the most out of what he gets each season. With two state championships, four district titles and a few Final Fours, it would be hard to not list Darnell. A twenty win season will put him over 300 wins for his career and any team led by Darnell could always be an upset potential night. Not looking strictly at legacy, as we said this list was not, we list Darnell with two elite eights in the last three years and 52 wins the last three years.

No. 22 SHONN SCHROER
West Mesa H.S. (other stops: Tucumcari) | 140*-179* (Career Record)

Okay, nothing like taking a program to their first Elite Eight in 15-years to jump you into the Top-25 coaches for the 2015-2016 season. Yes, only one 20-win season at West Mesa but to overcome Volcano Vista and Atrisco Heritage Academy opening up in your backyard you have to appreciate the job he is doing for the Mustangs program. Schroer might be one of the most underrated coaches in the metro area. The program lost some key players but have some veterans that return and when Shonn has a stud he can get this team playing well. When we compiled our list, like mentioned, we tried to look not only at legacy but at the coming season and which coaches we are excited to see. The program is on the rise and Schroer will only jump on our list.
*Record incomplete at Tucumcari and one year at West Mesa.

No. 21 DANNY BROWN
Highland H.S | 171-164 (Career Record)

One coach that we are looking forward to watching this season is Head Coach Danny Brown for the Highland Hornets. Brown, has had a huge task taking over a Highland program that is not in one of the easier districts to live in, in Albuquerque. Brown is the perfect fit, however, no matter how crazy that sounds for an Albuquerque Academy grad but he understands the culture of the area and he is quietly building a Highland team that could surprise people for the next two years (if not more). Like we have mentioned we are not on legacy (which he has coaching for the 2009 title) but he makes our list of 25 coaches to keep an eye on next season because this team is talented (in the making) and could be one to watch as an Elite Eight squad.

No. 20 RICHARD MARTINEZ
Espanola Valley HS | 310-156 (Career Record)

Yes, most have their arguments with Richard Martinez but it's a joy to see a coach with this much passion (for better or worse). One thing you can't argue with is his results, Martinez took over an Espanola Valley team that was terrible before he got there and took them to their first state title (2011). Martinez, gets this team to play hard, quick and fun basketball. With over 300 wins on his resume, we can't disregard that he is doing something right in the Valley. He will have some talented guards returning, even though it hurt losing a player like Jared Garduno but don't be shocked to see them playing in the PIT again this season. Martinez, makes our list because no matter who he graduates, his teams are always in position to beat you. Nothing like a Final Four appearance last season to help bust your stock either.

No. 19 MICHAEL MONDRAGON
Artesia HS (other stops: Moriarty) | 50-92 (Career Record)

Okay, there is definitely nothing like an upset as a 13-seed over the 4-seed in St. Pius X to boost your ranking of head coaches for next season. In this case, though, we also look a little about what Mondragon has done in his 5-years as a head coach. He coached at Moriarty, a basketball doormat, and took them to the state tournament and over .500 record for the first time in 20-years(!). He then goes home to Artesia and takes the Bulldogs to the 5A Elite Eight in his first season and upset a St. Pius X team that is one of the best programs in 5A. Mondragon, ranks as the 19th head coach, now, but if you look at head coaches that love every aspect of coaching (he was first class to me in 2013), Mondragon will be around for many years. 19 now but he is the future of head coaches, yes there will be some legacy head coaches ranked behind him or not on our ranking (there will be a shocker) but I think he is on the rise and in today's game he backs up the ranking.

No. 18 DANIEL TRUJILLO
Taos HS | 99-48 (Career Record)

With an impressive start to his coaching career many people have taken notice of the job head coach Daniel Trujillo has done in a short five years at Taos High School. If our record counting is true he is one game shy of 100-wins and is another name with Mondragon as one of the rising head coaches in New Mexico fraternity. A Final Four appearance, 18 win season last year and its hard to disregard Trujillo on our rankings of New Mexico head coaches for next season.

No. 17 JOE SANCHEZ
Grants HS | 33-27 (Career Record)
Another head coach, like Trujillo and Mondragon, who went home to coach their alma mater. Sanchez, might be some surprise to some of you making the list so early as he only enters his third season but Sanchez is making huge waves in Grants. The Pirates reached the Final Four last season and an Elite Eight in 2014. The Pirates are improving quick, the 2013 team went 9-18 before Sanchez took over the program. You will likely hear this name for many years to come as the Pirates could be a true contender for the 5A title.

No. 16 (tie) RICKIE McBROOM
Portales HS (other stops: Lordsburg, Moriarty, Aztec) | 288-277 (Career Record)
Not only head coach that we could talk more highly of other than Rickie McBroom. The Rams played in the Final Four last season, falling to Hope Christian but the job he has done in his three years is tremendous. McBroom has long been respected member of the coaching circle. But now as an early favorite in 2015-2016 in 4A you have to take notice.

No. 16 (tie) BRANDON SIQUEIROS
Silver HS | 113-50 (Career Record)
Another coach like McBroom that we couldn't speak more highly of. Siqueiros, has taken the Colts to another level and this coming season we could see them playing in the Final Four (maybe an extra game past that). This year that spot to play Hope in the title game could be up for grabs but don't be shocked if it's the Colts. Two Elite Eights and this might be the season the Colts play in the PIT.

No. 15 ROY SANCHEZ
Eldorado HS | 344-238 (Career Record)
Okay, yes we are aware of the terrific career that Sanchez has had (I for one love sitting down and chatting with coach Sanchez) but we remind you that this is not on legacy. If it was then likely in the top-5/6-10. Last season was a down year for the Eagles who have spent the last two seasons searching for the stud to help them over the hump. It's very hard to argue with Sanchez being at 15 and not in the top ten but leading into next season we have placed him here. The team will again be young next season and yes they have one, if not the best incoming freshmen but it might be a year or two. In 2013-214 they went 17-10 but last season at 11-15 was among the top-four lowest in win totals at Eldorado.

Note: For the next two weeks we will release our list daily to get us talking about the season. If you have a correction to career records please feel free to e-mail Grine with your record at grinejosh@yahoo.com

Week 11 Thursday Recap: Still Looking for Champs

THURSDAY: STILL HAVEN'T CROWNED CHAMPS

GRINE BITES: THURSDAY BIG THREEEEE (Yes, with a squeaky voice - a bit sick)

4A News: Shiprock ranked No. 25 in the state has had the worst week of the season dropping two games and falling into third place of District 1-4A. Kirtland Central beats Bloomfield; Wingate beat Shiprock and they now go into a tie break for the regular season title.

Another 4A team ranked in the Top-25 (there is not many) took a defeat on Thursday night and could suffer a drop in their seed. Pojoaque Valley helped their case beating West on Thursday night. West goes to (17-2, 5-1) on the season and Pojoaque takes second place at (9-10, 5-1) on the season.

5A News: Goddard falls to Roswell and Artesia beats Lovington. What does that means? Both teams go to 3-3 in district and it could affect the seed for either team, maybe a playoff spot.

What helps both of those teams, potentially is the fact that Moriarty upset Albuquerque Academy in the "wow" factor. Moriarty solidifies its playoff spot but it makes things a little more crowded for seeds 6-12. Piedra Vista might be the beneficiary for all of this news.

6A News: Waiting game for the results of the Cleveland-Rio Rancho game. If the Lady Storm won it would be a three-way tie at 6-2 for Cibola, Volcano and Cleveland. Cibola took care of business beating Santa Fe and Volcano has the night off. Updated 9:17AM: Cleveland beat Rio Rancho however Cleveland is odd team out of the 6-2 tie. Cibola and Volcano will play a one-game playoff for title.

Artesia over Lovington, 3-0
Carlsbad over Clovis, 3-2
Cibola over Santa Fe, 3-0
Eldorado over Manzano, 3-0
Farmington over Gallup, 3-1
Hatch Valley over Hot Springs, 3-1
Hobbs over Alamogordo, 3-0
Kirtland Central over Bloomfield, 3-0
Miyamura over Aztec, 3-0
Moriarty over Albuquerque Academy, 3-2
Pojoaque Valley over West Las Vegas, 3-1
Portales over Ruidoso, 3-0
Roswell over Goddard, 3-0
Sandia over Highland, 3-0
Silver over Cobre, 3-0
St. Pius X over Grants, 3-0

Cobre student athlete

Cobre football player Corey Roberson could use some help from the NM athletic community an the nmpreps community. His senior season was cut short last week to a pretty freak injury and the cobre community has set up a gofundme page. I know his father personally and he is great kid that comes from a great family. Here is the link for his gofundme page and any prayers and well wishes could help as well! https://www.gofundme.com/2u6sh438

First Round Matchup Preview: 6A Girls

Each Day this week we will discuss a new classification and the matchups being played in the first round.

Girls 6A

8. Las Cruces hosts 9. Sandia
The Las Cruces Bulldawgs are coming off hot, going undefeated in district play. The Sandia Matadors just defeated the #1 seed La Cueva, in their final regular season matchup. These teams have not met this year, but show some similarities in opponents. Both teams lost to Rio Rancho and Cleveland. Sandia beat Onate, while the Bulldawgs tied one and won two against the Knights. Both teams beat Gadsden, while Sandia split with La Cueva, and Las Cruces lost to the Bears. Junior Tara Giesen is leading the Matadors this season with 13 big time goals. On the Bulldawg side, Freshman Taya Lopez has knocked in 25 goals, while teammates Alaniz Salas and Kirsten Udero have 16 and 12 respectively. Both teams are coming into the game with momentum and it should be a battle until the end.

5. Cibola hosts 12. Carlsbad
On September 19, the Cibola Cougars and the Carlsbad Cavemen battled it out at the APS soccer complex. The Cougars came away with a solid 5-0 win to make a big statement. A little over a month later, the two teams will take the stage once again in hopes of moving on in the state tournament. Carlsbad has two strong juniors who take control of the game. Julie Thompson, who has 16 goals, and Tessa Graham, who has 14, need to have the best game of their lives if they hope to beat the Cougars. However, Sophomore Lexi Baca has 25 goals so far this season and looks to knock in a couple more against the Cavemen. Jasmine Marwan, who has 17 goals on the season, is also a player the Cavemen have to keep an eye out for. Cibola has the upper hand on this game.

6. Cleveland hosts 11. Hobbs
Both the Cleveland Storm and Hobbs Eagles have a win against Onate and hold a loss against Eldorado and Cibola. However, the Eagles lost to Las Cruces, while the Storm beat the Bulldawgs by 2. Sophomore Jennifer Schroeder is the top player for the Eagles, as she’s hit the back of the net 13 times. 14 goals is the amount Kailey Pena has scored for the Storm, while Savannah Montoya has knocked in 12. Cleveland should take this game, however, Hobbs sometimes has a way of upsetting their opponent, and may have a shot at doing so this Saturday.

7. Volcano Vista hosts 10. Clovis
The defending state champions, the Volcano Vista Hawks have not played the district 4 champions, the Clovis Wildcats so far this season. The only common result the two teams have is their wins against Santa Fe. The Hawks flew away with a victory against the La Cueva Bears, while the Wildcats got shut out 0-9. Clovis lost to Cruces, while Volcano tied the Bulldawgs. Senior Samantha Meza has 27 goals on the season for the Wildcats, while Eighth Grader Sofia Rico has 17. Junior Jaci Siever has 16 assists so far. For the Hawks, it’s all Freshman Cierra Ramirez, who has 14 goals. If the Hawks can stop Meza from scoring, they will advance to the quarterfinals.
