Volcano Vista 34, Manzano 17

The Volcano Vista Hawks rolled to 2-0 on the season Thursday Night defeating Manzano in a game they led 28-0 at the half. Hawks Quarterback Josh Wiliams threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Helio Lopez and then a 47-yard touchdown strike to David Cormier to make it a quick 14-0. The Hawks defense was stout on the night again creating several opportunities for Volcano Vista to score and the Hawks did just that as Williams hit Josh Barton for a touchdown pass, than ran in a touchdown from 14-yards out. The lone Manzano highlight was a 22-yard touchdown from Sophomore Jordan Byrd. Volcano Vista heads to Las Cruces to take on Las Cruces in week 3.

Sandia 51, Atrisco Heritage 6

The Sandia Matadors rebounded in week 2 with a big win against Atrisco Heritage 51-6 Thursday Night at Community Stadium in Albuquerque. Sandia running back Jimmy Galleogs scored the games first touchdown off an 8-yard touchdown run, then Jacob Archibeque hit Gallegos for a 60-yard touchdown to make it 14-0. Gallegos scored his third touchdown of the night off a 50-yard pick 6 to make it 28-0, then Gallegos would score his fourth touchdown of the night off another touchdown catch from Archubeque. On the night Gallegos finished with 5 touchdowns and over 167-yards of offense. Sandia now 1-1 will take on Albuquerque in week 3. Atrisco Heritage now 0-2 will take on Clovis at Leon Williams Stadium

Centennial 55, Gadsden 6 Final

The Centennial Hawks routed Gadsden Thursday Night at the Field of Dreams 55-6 to move to 2-0 on the season. Quarterback Dante Lopez threw a 54-yard touchdown pass to JR Pena to make it 7-0, then the Hawks got a touchdown from Joaquin Gutierrez to make it 14-0, then a Kieth Jasson touchdown made it 21-0 early in the 2nd quarter. The Hawks continued to pour it on when Pena caught another touchdown pass, then went up 34-0 when Lopez hit Bryce Rewalt to make it 34-0. Lopez who had three touchdowns last week finished the game with 197-yards passing and three touchdowns. The Hawks now 2-0 will take on Del Norte in week 3.

After 10 years, state’s prep sports site still growing
By: James Barron of the Santa Fe, New Mexican

Kyle Henderson can simply use the name of his website to measure the progress of it.

When the 2002 St. Michael’s graduate started up what is now the state’s most visible prep sports site, nmpreps.com, in 2005, Henderson used a sign on the backpack he carried to football games to promote it. For the past three years, Henderson has had a sponsor, Tate Branch Auto Group out of Artesia, which lends him a truck with the nmpreps.com logo on it.

In 10 years, Henderson has created the premier site to follow high school sports statewide — although its bread and butter is football and basketball — and it has grown to levels even he never envisioned. In August alone, Henderson said he had 1.3 million page views as he offered a glimpse of the prep football crystal ball for the 2015 season. On the first Friday of the season, nmpreps.com registered 141,000 page views from readers wanting to know the progress of state games.

I'll be previewing the following teams/games taking place in week 2 (starting tomorrow/completed Friday)

Top 25 Preview

1. Cleveland Storm @ Del Valle
The Storm will head to El Paso, Texas Friday Night to take on Del Vallle, a 5A top tier program from the area that actually beat the Storm in Rio Rancho last year 27-7. The good news is that Del Valle Quarterback Steven Montez is graduated and enrolled at Colorado, the bad news is that Storm are playing in Conquest Stadium. Tough road trip, but in week 1 Cleveland looked to be playing simply on another level destroying Manzano 53-0 in a game that featured big defense by Cleveland who allowed just 47-yards in 2 quarters and big offense by Quarterback Gabe Ortega who scored 4 touchdowns on the night.

2. Mayfield Trojans vs. EP Franklin
Last year this was one of the most excited games of the year with the Trojans winning 62-55 in El Paso. The game is at the Field of Dreams, which is a pro for the Trojans, but it will be interesting to see if Mayfield is emotionally drained after beating Hobbs 41-34 in a thriller to open the season. Mayfield’s offense racked up nearly 600-yards of offense on the night, 361-yards came from Junior Running Back Isaac Vance who also scored 4 touchdowns. El Paso Franklin is 1-0 and coming off a 21-20 win over El Paso Cantuillo.

3. Rio Rancho Rams vs. EP Americas
The Rio Rancho Rams are trying to make it 15 in a row this weekend against El Paso Americas in their first home game since winning the 2014 state championship against Mayfield. Last week the Rams powered past Valley 42-12 thanks to 240-yards passing from Steven Bailey and 150-yards rushing from Junior Running Back Josh Foley. Amercias defeated Carlsbad last weekend 32-13.

4. Centennial Hawks 55, Gadsden 6

5. Las Cruces Bulldawgs @ La Cueva
Interesting match up taking place on Saturday as Las Cruces 0-1 on the season heads to Albuquerque Saturday to take on 1-0 La Cueva. Last weekend the Las Cruces Bulldawgs lost to El Paso Montwood 20-14 in a game that was called in the 3rd quarter due to lightning. In the game Quarterback Kameron Miller busted off a 48-yard touchdown run and Brandon Baeza came up with both a touchdown catch and an interception on defense. The Bears opened the season with a 33-7 victory over Atrisco Heritage thanks to nearly 300-yards of offense which came on the ground.

6. Volcano Vista Hawks 34, Manzano 17 Final

7. Artesia Bulldogs vs. Hobbs
The Bulldogs have won their last 13 out of 14 games dating back to the 2014 season when they went 12-1 winning the Class 5A state championship. Their last loss came against Hobbs in 2014 losing 44-20. To open the season the Bulldogs blasted Belen 41-0 thanks to a big passing debut from Justin Houghtaling who threw for 260-yards and 4 touchdowns. Artesia’s defense has to be up to the task to stop Hobbs, it’s been a while since someone has beaten the Bulldogs two straight times in the Bulldog Bowl.

8. Eldorado Eagles vs. Valley
The Eagles put away Rio Grande last week in three short quarters of play winning 53-0. The question most Eagle fans had entering the season wwas who was going to step up on offense with Zach Gentry graduating. A lot of those questions were solved with Jayce Jackson throwing two touchdowns, Noah Swietzer picking up the load at running back and guys like David Inman and Alias Baker emerging as marquee guys. Eldorado is again the favorite against Valley, but it’s likely not going to be another cake-walk.

9. Clovis Wildcats @ Cibola
The Wildcats took care of business in week 1 and looked like the Clovis of old beating Goddard 34-14 at Leon Williams. Running Back Micah Gray ran for over 130-yards and the defense didn’t bend as the Wildcats earned a well respected week 1 victory. This week they will take their high powered offense up against Cibola who looked dangerous last week against Albuquerque winning 37-7. We know Clovis’ offense is good, how good is their defense? That is the theme this week.

10. Alamogordo Tigers @ Los Lunas
The Alamogordo Tigers simply dominated Valencia on opening night winning 53-0 and from what we hear they didn’t unleash their full potential of offensive firepower. This weekend the Tigers will face a another team from Valencia Country in Los Lunas who lost last weekend 15-14 to Farmington. Similar take to our Clovis preview: How good is Alamogordo’s defense? They have a big time running back to stop in O’Maury Samuels.

11. Goddard Rockets @ Piedra Vista
The Goddard Rockets will look to bounce back after a 20 point loss to Clovis during a very long road trip to Farmington Friday. Last week Sophomore Quarterback Cameron Stevenson accounted for more than 150-yards and a score. Piedra Vista is a bubble Top 25 team after beating San Juan Blanding, Utah and the Rockets will have to account for Elijah Gamboa, the Panther’s do it all athlete.

12. Hobbs Eagles @ Artesia
The Hobbs Eagles are flying into Artesia will a good amount of momentum despite losing to Mayfield last week 41-34. Quarterback Isaac Amaya threw for over 150-yards, Running Back Jeremy Padilla had himself a game and they have beaten Artesia two straight times. The question or the theme of this game is can Hobbs’ defense stop Artesia? Last weekend the Eagles allowed more than 550-yards of offense to the Trojans.

13. Onate Knights @ EP Eastlake
The Knights will head down to El Paso to take on Eastlake after a 36-28 loss to cross town rival Centennial in week 1. Eastlake allowed 70 points last weekend losing to Eldorado 70-49. For the Knights last week, junior fullback/linebacker Forest McKee ran for over 90-yards and recored 14 tackles.

14. La Cueva Bears vs. Las Cruces
The La Cueva Bears now 1-0 after a 33-7 victory over Atrisco Heritage will take on Las Cruces Saturday at Wilson Stadium. The Bears are young, but their ground game looks like their bread and butter as last week Josh Woisin and Thomas Bui accounted for over 200-yards against the Jaguars. If they can establish a slow place game and keep the ball out of Las Cruces’ possession they have a hopeful chance.

15. Sandia Matadors 51, Atrisco Heritage 6

15. Sandia Matadors @ Atrisco Heritage

16. Cibola Cougars vs. Clovis
Cibola hosts the Clovis Wildcats Friday Night in an intriguing match up. Now while Cibola suffered a ton to graduation, Head Coach Rod Williams has continued to keep Cibola in the 6A fold. Last weekend the Cougars defeated Albuquerque 37-7 thanks to a 150-yard and 5 touchdown performance from Kayzon Martin. Stopping the Wildcats is going to be up to Cibola’s defense. The less first downs they allow the better their chances for the upset.

17. Manzano Monarchs vs. Volcano Vista
The Monarchs struggled Thursday Night against Volcano Vista losing their second game of the season 34-17. The score is closer than the game indicated as the Hawks jumped to a 28-0 lead at the halftime break The lone bright spot of the knight for Manzano was a 21-yard touchdown run from Sophomore Jordan Byrd. Manzano has allowed 87 points through two games and will take on Rio Grande in week 3.

18. Valley Vikings vs. Eldorado
The Vikings are 0-1 on the season and have a tough test this weekend against Eldorado, however this Valley team already seems more improved year over year. Last week Running Back Michael Barboa ran for 100-yards and scored a touchdown against Rio Rancho and Quarterback Isaiah Chavez hooked up with Noah Santistevens a few times to show some bright spots. They have a punchers chance against Eldorado, but it’s not going to be easy.

19. St. Pius X Sartans @ Los Alamos
St. Pius X rolled past Del Norte last weekend 47-8 to make a big week 1 statement. On the night Junior Quarterback Drew Ortiz threw for 250-yards, ran for 115-yards, and account for 5 touchdowns. This Sartans Football team has a chance to be something special and they enter tonight’s game against Los Alamos as the overwhelming favorite.

20. Atrisco Heritage Jaguars vs. Sandia
The Atrisco Heritage Jaguars suffered their second loss of the season Thursday Night falling to Sandia 51-6. In two games the Jaguars have allowed 87 points and only scored 13. The Jaguars lone highlight of the night came off a 40-yard Aaron Bean touchdown run. The Jaguars travel to Clovis in week 3.

21. Belen Eagles vs. Moriarty
The Belen Eagles will try to bounce back in week 2 following a 41-0 loss to Artesia in week 1. They take on Moriarty who was also defeated by a large margin losing to Miyamura 37-10. It will be interesting to see which Belen prospects rise up, a loss to Moriarty could be a tell/tell sign of what is to come the rest of the season.

22. Albuquerque vs. Del Norte
The Bulldogs now 0-1 on the season were defeated last weekend by Cibola losing 37-7. The bad news is they allowed more than 200-yards of rushing and 5 ground touchdowns. The good news is that they played Cibola (a play off team from last year) close through two quarters and showed good signs of improving driving down against Cibola and scoring on the opening drive. They need to win this game against Del Norte to remain in the top 25.

23. Carlsbad Cavemen @ Deming
You can already tell the Cavemen are an improved football team, can’t you? Despite losing to El Paso Americas last week 32-13, the Cavemen battled for 4-quarters. The highlight of the night came off a 71-yard touchdown run from Quarterback Jonah Leyva. The Cavemen take on Deming this week who was defeated by Flowing Wells, Arizona 34-20 in week 1.

24. Miyamura @ Montezuma-Cortez, CO
The Miyamura Patriots continue to impress and last week ran through Moriarty 37-10 to jump into the NMPreps.com Top 25 for the first time in school history. Their ground game is powerful with Senior Running Back AJ Strakovich leading the way, he ran for 194-yards and 3 touchdowns against the Pintos. Quarterback Matt Chavez threw for 119-yards and ran for 129-yards. Montezuma-Cortez is 0-1 losing to Aspen last weekend 29-12.

25. West Mesa @ Valencia
The West Mesa Mustangs are new to the NMPreps.com Top 25 after a 55-28 victory over the Highland Hornets in week 1. Last weekend Shirece Bell ran for 150-yards and scored 4 touchdowns. The Mustangs take on Valencia who was defeated by Alamogordo last weekend 53-0 at half.

5 Storylines To Watch In Week 2

Rio Rancho trying for 15 in a row

The Class 6A defending state champs Rio Rancho (1-0) will try to make it 15 in a row this weekend against El Paso Americas (1-0) who defeated Carlsbad in week 1 32-13. Big Three For Saturday Morning Coffee

Big 3: Saturday Morning Headlines
Grine

What will be the big three headlines for tomorrow morning?

After a fun, very long, week one Friday night it's time for another game night! Before you head to the lake and open the fishing lines and refreshments let's enjoy another night. For me it's the excitement of seeing scores come in, texts with updates and calls from my boss (Hendo) just chatting about the high school scene. Damn I love Friday nights.

Okay, today on Friday we see who can predict the three story lines for tonight. Who can go 3 for 3?

1. Isaac Vance (Mayfield/RB): He goes for over 200-yards rushing again. Is this a bold prediction? Maybe not after a week one performance of 350-yards, but I need to start off with a high percentage chance of going 1 for 1 on my Big Three predictions.

2. Hobbs Drops to 0-2. Yes, I am anticipating the comments for this prediction. Is it a knock at Hobbs, no way, I really like what Gleghorn is doing with the program and I am a fan of Hobbs each time I have visited. I just like Artesia this season and the QB. I guess I should predict an over/under on Hobbs comments (if) this happens and they drop to 0-2. 50 or more comments?

3. Less shutouts/mercy rule games this Friday night: Plenty of shutouts last weekend but this week we have some evenly matched games like the Cleveland-Del Valle (TX), La Cueva-Las Cruces and even the Highland-Rio Grande. I am even intrigued with the Capital vs St. Mike's contest.

Maybe I will come up with a prize if you can go 3-3. Be bold (like Week 2 Bold Predictions) but try to get three stories that will headline your Saturday morning.

Navajo Code Talkers To Be Honored In Shiprock

The following information has been posted by @KnightNation1 and also been sent into us via e-mail. I'll be in Artesia Friday Night and would be an epic journey to Shiprock on Saturday. However, this is very cool and I am glad to post it!

***

Shiprock is hosting the Northern New Mexico Football Classic this Saturday, September 5th, 2015. Here are the games scheduled to be played at Chieftain field...

Lordsburg vs. Newcomb @ 2:00 PM
Chinle, Arizona vs. Shiprock @ 6:00 PM

We are also hosting our 1st Annual Chieftain Veteran Appreciation Ceremony this Saturday, during halftime of the Chinle vs. Shiprock game. We will be honoring the original 29 Navajo Code Talkers, including Corporal Chester Nez. Chester Nez, the last of the 29 original Navajo Code Talkers who developed a secret code which helped Allied forces win the second World War. We will recognize the 381 Code Talkers who served during World War II, in the pacific theatre of war.

We are honored and proud to recognize Navajo Code Talker, Thomas H. Begay and his family this Saturday. Mr. Begay served in World War II during the island hopping campaign. He proudly fought for his country at Iwo Jima right on Red Beach 2. He also served in the Korean War at the Chosin Reservoir in 1950 against Korean and Chinese forces. This gentleman is a true American hero who served with the 5th Marine Division Signal Company at Iwo Jima.

Mr. Begay received the Congressional Medal from former United States President, George W. Bush, in 2001. Our community and the Navajo Nation is proud to honor all veterans and our Marine Navajo Code Talkers. Our Navajo Code Talkers have paved a pathway of freedom and liberties for all United States citizens and our youth. We are humbled and honored to recognize these brave men and ladies for their sacrifices on behalf of our beloved country!
