Manzano Monarch Overview
The Manzano Monarchs have reached the big school classification playoffs in the last 6 of 7 seasons. Head Coach Chad Adcox has been with Manzano since 2003 and took over as Head Coach for Aaron Ocampo in 2012. Entering his 4th year as Head Coach at Manzano, Adcox has kept Manzano is the big school mix, but with declining numbers at Manzano getting past yearly bigs like Cleveland, Mayfield, and their district has been a continued struggle. In fact, since 2012 Manzano is 2-8 against district opponents. They graduate a good mix of linemen and skill guys, but their younger group coming up is very talented. “We got some new names like: Orlando Perez, Jordan Byrd, and Antonio Padilla, and skill wise overall I liked the way we competed at the UNM 7-On. It’s all about learning right now in the summer time, for right now I think we are where we need to be,” said Manzano Head Football Coach Chad Adcox.

A Look Back Over The Years
2014 4-6 *Lost to Onate in the 1st Round
2013 5-5 Did not reach the playoffs
2012 6-5 *Lost to Mayfield in the 1st Round
2011 11-3 *Lost to Mayfield Semifinals
2010 11-2 *Lost to Mayfield in the Title Game
2009 10-2 *Lost to La Cueva in the Semifinals
2008 8-4 *Lost to Las Cruces in the quarterfinals

Senior Spotlight: Orlando Perez
1698285.jpg

Orlando Perez is a very dynamic athlete, has a cannon for an arm, and we’re moving him to quarterback this year, He is also a great runner, and will bring some excitement to the table,” commented Head Manzano Coach Chad Adcox on Perez who will take over for Brandon Bray this year at quarterback. As a junior Perez ran for 137-yards, caught for 290-yards, and racked up 342-yards returning kicks. In the past, when Manzano has a dual threat at the helm, they are very tough to stop on offense.

Skill Guys Will Be Their Strength
1698286.jpg

The Monarchs might not have the size up front they have had in the past, but their skill guys are going to be very dangerous. Jordan Byrd (pictured) at 5-foot-10, 165 pounds won the 100M state championship as a just a freshman last year. His best time was a 10.6 and according to Adcox, Byrd is not just a track guy, he’s one who loves contact and can make plays with the football. Adcox tells us we’ll see Byrd all over the field: Slot, backfield, kick off returns, but eventually in years to come he could take over the quarterback position, the position he played all throughout YAFL. “Jordan is a person of great character, works his butt off, lightning fast, and he is going to have a target on his back, but with that he is very humble. He just does his job,” says Adcox on Jordan. Their running back this year taking over for 1,100-yard rusher Isaiah Cordova is Matt Gutierrez who looked to hit the whole hard at practice. The Monarchs return 6-foot-3, 190 pound Dominick Konstan who led the team in receiving last year with 387-yards and 5 touchdown catches. Also watch for 5-foot-9, 170 pound Michael Youchison who looked the part in practice Monday Morning.

Big Man To Watch Is Antonio Padilla
1698291.jpg

The Monarchs strongest player up front is Antonio Padilla (pictured) at 5-foot-10, 240 pounds. He has a bench of 320 pounds, squat of 425, hang clean of 270, and an incline of 300 (1,315 Total). Padilla will be at the left guard position during the 2015 season. “Not as big as we’ve been in the past, we have some good guys with some strength. Antonio has a bench of 300 pounds, very strong kid, the strongest in our program. Caleb Dimas at 6-foot-1, 220 pounds is back, and some new guys are competing for positions and Greg Romero will likely start at Center."

6 or 7 Sophomores Could Start
1698294.jpg

Speaking with Coach Adcox, there is a good chance that 5 or 6 sophomores could see varsity time this year. Jordan Byrd at slot/athlete, Cameron Herrera (pictured) at linebacker. Herrera looks solid and looks more like a senior than a sophomore at a strong 185 pounds. Alejandro Vallejos could see time in the secondary at safety, Noah Baca has a chance to start at backer, Kydae Jones could see time at running back, Andrew Erickson is battling for a position at outside receiver, and Greg Romero will be starting at Center.

Defensive Players To Watch
The Monarchs will be young on defense with just 4 projected starters in the Class of 2016. Shamille Carver is a 6-foot-1, 195 pound defensive end that looked noteworthy at practice. Bryson Watts will be a two-year starter at the linebacker position, typical linebacker that looks aggressive. At Manzano you rarely see players going both ways. In the secondary watch for Ryan Moore (should have a big year) and Devon McGee. Two incoming prospects that coach tells us has looked good early on. As mentioned there are a good amount of sophomores that could see time on defense: Cameron Herrera at linebacker, Alejandro Vallejos at safety, and Noah Baca at linebacker.

Breaking It Down
If I had to guess at how many games Manzano would win today I would say at least 5, maybe 6 if they can upset a district opponent. It’s not that they are going to be bad, but they are young on defense and not very big up front on either side of the football. Their skill position players and speed are going to keep them in games as they have players that have home-run play ability. They’ll be able to stretch the field when passing the football, Orlando Perez at quarterback throws the football very well and as mentioned he’s one of the best runners on their team. Then there is the Jordan Byrd factor, UNM has not offered a sophomore (since who knows when) and speed kills. This team pounded Volcano Vista last year, was beating Cibola 28-7 before the game was called, nearly beat La Cueva, and lost by just 4 to Onate in the playoffs. Hard to see Manzano making a run this year, but they are going to have some bite and it’s best you don’t overlook this bunch. We're highlighting week 2 against Volcano Vista and their first district game against Sandia on October 10th as marquee match ups.

2. Aggie Camp Recap

During June 19th and 20th, I was in Las Cruces, New Mexico to check out the New Mexico State Football Camp as well as the Hobbs vs. Centennial 7-On-7/Linemen Challenge.

There was plenty of talent in Las Cruces this past weekend at the New Mexico State Camp. Two prospects pulled in D-1 offers from the Aggies on Friday. The Aggies offered Los Lunas Running Back O'Maury Samules and Clovis Tight End Roland Chavez. Samuels is a 5-foot-11, 185 pound running back out of the Class of 2017 (incoming junior) that ran a 4.4 40-time, 35 inch vertical, and a 10-foot-4 inch broad jump. Chavez is a 6-foot-4, 210 pound tight end that now holds offers from New Mexico State, Northern Arizona, Eastern New Mexico, and NMMI.

10. Father’s Day
Love Father's Day. Who doesn't right? I'll break my write up into two sections. Talking about my own father and a few times we shared and also talk about my own experience on being a father.

My pops
We literally talk nearly every day. I call him early, know he is going to be up at 5AM and talk with me while I drive to some high school for a team preview. Honestly, I can't remember many times that we have even argued. It's such a fluid relationship and he is truly at the happiest point in his life, something I am so grateful for. Best memories: Him taking me to watch a Lobo Football Game/Lobo Basketball Game on the same day. It was the last time the Lobos won the WAC. We're not Lobo fans, but it was just the fact that we just got to hang out all day. Fishing is my dad's life, so naturally the 100's of times we spent tying knots and casting into the trees. Haha. Recently, my father and I took my son fishing (I didn't fish) I just sat back and watched my pops teach my son how to cast and how to land a fish. Too many good times to count.

Being a Father
A mother is so much of a better parent than a father, naturally imo. My wife is just amazing at taking care of the kids. I pray for patience and I try my best to soak up each and every second we are together. In my line of work I've come to realize that time flies by in a blink of an eye and then boom! Your child is entering their senior year and about to leave for college. Things have certainly changed for me since I've become a father, but for the better I hope. One goal I have is to be at 99% of all their functions, parent teacher conferences, games, performances, etc. Every morning I take them to school and pick them up. In my best efforts I try to provide wisdom and life lessons to my son, for example: these are the 7 things we say every day before school. (We started out with 3, then 5, now we are up to 7)

1. Listen to your teachers
2. Be nice to your friends
3. Help my friends
4. Be a leader
5. Have fun
6. Have mental endurance
7. Have a good attitude

With my little girl: I try my best not to be ran over. It's hard though. Haha.

Hope you enjoyed your day

Goddard Athlete Breaks Powerlifting Records

Goddard Rockets shine at recent NASA Powerlifting Competition

Dallas, Texas

Tal Price and Lukas Gutierrez (pictured) of Goddard High School both competed at the NASA Powerlifting Nationals over the weekend.

According to NASA-Sports.com “NASA was founded in 1990 by Rich Peters after he had already conducted more than fifteen years worth of running meets as a meet director. NASA was featured exclusively on the cover of Powerlifting USA more than half a dozen times, the Natural Nationals event was hailed as the largest powerlifting competition in the history of the sport for a few years in a row and at one time NASA was putting on more meets annually across the United States than any other organization that existed.”

Both Tal and Lukas took home first place medals in their prospective weight classes for total weight. Both lifted over 1,000-pounds total in squat, deadlift, and bench press. Lukas closed the night with a national record 496 pound deadlift (all lifts are judged by an official NASA Judge). In total he left the meet with two national records.

NASA, Natural Athlete Strength Association will have a nationals meet in Roswell, New Mexico later in July 2015.

SI article re painkillers and heroin, featuring NM athletes

The June 22 issue of Sports Illustrated includes an article addressing the issue of high school athletes whose use of pain-killing medication to treat sports injuries turns into addiction to other drugs, including heroin.

The article features the stories of Albuquerque athletes Roman Montano, Cameron Weiss and Michael Duran, all of whom died of drug overdoses at very young ages.

The article includes the following quote: "If there is an epicenter for the heroin-in-sports crisis, it's Albuquerque (pop. 550,000), a high-altitude city less than 300 miles from the Mexican border. A report by the New Mexico health department found that the drug-overdose death rate in the state jumped by more than 60% between 2001 and '10, and in New Mexico's Youth Risk and Resiliency survey one in 10 youths admitted to using opiate-based prescription drugs to get high. In Albuquerque at least eight athletes have died from heroin or painkiller overdoses since '11."

Hearing Belen looks impressive

Update I got..

Went by to watch the Artesia tournament. Good teams. Belen looks to be a suprise team. They beat Roswell, Las Cruces, and Mesilla Valley. Heard they also beat Artesia and PV this summer. Great guard play. Goddard and Carlsbad also looked good. Roswell is Roswell a good team. Artesia also looked strong. Should be a great year of basketball. Siver really impressive. They looked good.

Alamogordo's Julian Segura shines at New Mexico State Camp

Alamogordo's Julian Segura shines at New Mexico State Camp

Las Cruces - New Mexico,

Mayfield Quarterback Joeray Valencia had just thrown a 40-yard touchdown pass to Running Back Isaac Vance to put the Trojans up by one score against Alamogordo in a back and fourth 7-on-7 shootout.

Junior Alamogordo Quarterback Kyle Hooper had already thrown three scores in the game and made some big throws in the final drive to put the Tigers in scoring position at the 5-yard line. Hooper then threw a floating fade to 6-foot-2, 190 pound receiver Julian Segura and it seemed as timed stood still…

1697673.gif

(Video sent in by the Segura family)

Segura muscled into position against a Trojan defender, jumped for the ball at the highest point, and brought down the game winner.

Segura shined in the opening game against Centennial as well catching pass after pass from Hooper. The duo seemed to be on another level this morning under 100 degree heat during New Mexico State’s 2015 7-on-7 passing league.

As a junior in 2014 Segura caught 55 passes for 660-yards, and 6 touchdowns. He broke the school record for both receptions and yards in a season. He's clearly has been in the weight room (See video below).

His mother tells us his father is 6-foot-6 and after watching him in person today in Las Cruces, he is clearly a next level guy, Segura showed out today and looked like a man amongst boys at times. We hear that New Mexico State and New Mexico have both contacted him, but no offers as of yet.

Skill Guys To Watch From Alamogordo

Alamogordo returns a good amount of skill position talent, Kyle Hooper their returning junior quarterback put the ball on the money all day long. Carlos Hicks is a new name to watch, shifty and quick. Hunter Graham who will be the team’s running back looks like he lives in a gym.

It’s early, we have not seen their linemen, but Alamogordo and especially Julian Segura made a statement today in Las Cruces.
